You can keep the old pad on the caliper when compressing the piston. Makes it easier as you have a bigger surface for the clamp to compress and it reduces the risk of hurting the piston.
Good video, as with all from E39Source. I will caution that when raising a car from the rear differential, be sure not to place the jack on the cooling fins, as those are not meant to support any kind of load. Position the jack ahead of the fins, instead. Other than that, nice work!
It's a REALLY good idea to clean the caliper pistons BEFORE you force them back into the calipers with the clamp. Your caliper pistons seals will thank you.
Well done. You did a great job with the video and I'm ready to tackle my 07 M6 now! I see the same wear you do. The rears are ready for replacement but the fronts have plenty of life.
great video .... i appreciate guys like you taking the time to video stuff like this ... i have the brake dust my m5 puts out. ordered new low dust pads a week ago to solve this issue.
Thanks for this usefull information ! I am struggling with the exact same problem, in just a 200 mile drive the rims are completely black from the breakdust ! I am gonne try to get those pads here in holland.
should be clamping the brake lines and bleeding the fluid out the bleed nipple when compressing the pistons otherwise it is possible to do damage to the seals in the master cylinder through back feeding , you could also make the reservoir overfill this way and have brake fluid eat out the paint down your firewall. when replacing pads properly with the nipple open it is recommended to do a small bleed at the same time . cheers
Ash HAVEN BMW that is a myth that the dealer tells you to try and make you bring it to them the resi when your breaks need to be done should be lower than max anyway been doing my e60 since 10000 miles now have over 130000
OK thank u. Do u have a video on cleaning the steering angle sensor? I'm having an issue with mine now. I tell u, if its not one thing its another with this car.
Damen Smalls E60 M5? We don't have that video. My E39 M5 has 187,000 miles and no issues with that. These E60s should not have issues with that already!
Great video. I was trying to find something like this on youtube and i believe you are the first one with a video on the e60. It would be great if you could do some more videos on the e60, i will be making an oil change on my pretty soon and have seen how to do it on the boards but nothing on you tube. I belive they have 2 bolts on the bottom one for the oil pan and one more some where else. Im not sure but it would be great if you know anything about that and give me some feedback. You rock!
thanks for doing the video .... but my bmw is a 2011 equipped with electronic calipers ...i need to know what brake scanner i need to buy to get into the car to release the calipers ?? THANKS IN ADVANCE
Ah...I have used the rear diff before but 'some' people state to not use it. Stating it may dent your diff or something. Have you ever had this happen before?
Per BMW the jacking point is the not the aluminum fin part but the black cast iron housing. The fins do protrude lower, that’s why a small block of wood is handy for this and prevent any marring.
Slotted rotors wear pads faster and don't stop as well, its purely for looks. Drilled rotors remove surface material and also decrease stopping performance. They are only useful on the track to dissipate heat faster.
nice video. im gonna do the brake job in the next couple days for my E71 X6M. your video is really helpful. The only thing im not sure with is should i use grease for the bolts or not?
Thanks for answering. My pads are worn out so I have already bought a horse sized syringe for that purpose. 👌😂 The 535d uses the same pads as the M5, but the M5 disks are a little bit bigger. I'm sure the calipers are bigger too.
Hi I’m Anthony I need help my 2006 bmw m5 thrown a P000A cam position sensor on bank 1 saying slow response. How do I fix this. It started to come on and go off since it’s started getting cold. Increased emissions is what it was saying. Could you do a diy video on the matter.
I would replace the camshaft position sensors (all 4). There are two on each cylinder bank. An intake camshaft sensor, and an exhaust camshaft sensor. I'm sure there are good DIYs online. I only support two E60 M5s, and neither one of them need that job so I am not authorized to do it at this point.
thanks for sharing, i need to change my rear pads also. i was thinking of akebono or stoptechs but you seem to give hawk pads a good review. let me check them out. the oem pads definitely leave alot of brake dust. thanks again.
Anything is possible if you're willing to spend the time and the money on it. However.. E39 brakes are quite good, and you can upgrade any E39 to the M5 brakes if you don't have an M5. Upgrading the 530i or below (anything but 540i) will require some other modifications like 18 inch or larger wheels.
You only need to replace the sensors if the the CHECK light came on in the car, meaning that the sensors did their job and were destroyed in order to tell you that you're out of pad material. Since we were replacing these pads simply to get rid of brake dust, the sensors were still good.
Great video. I live in San Diego and I saw your dad driving before . I have the same exact car color and year. Ii would love to have you change my pads if you are interested in a participation
Hey was sup! Great videos by the way! I have really enjoyed watching them. I wanted to know if you plan on making a video regarding changing the oil on the E60 BMW M5? Your Dads. I'm a visual learner, and it would be great help if I am able to see what I need to do in order to change the oil on my E60 BMW M5. Please if you have already done a video on changing the oil on a E60 BMW M5 send me/us E60 BMW M5 a link. Thank You for your great videos!
Thanks for watching! My dad lives in San Diego and I'm still stuck in Ohio, so I haven't been able to film much on his car. He still has dealers do his changes though. If I have a chance to do it in the future, I'll certainly film it and upload it here!
Clean car so obviously well kept-- I think with a car like that I would have flushed the brake fluid unless its been done recently? I am sure you saved yourself a few hours BMW shop labor not to mention the price of factory pads
Your rotors look like complete shit, you should replace those as well. Recommended by factory to do both pads and rotord at the same time. But you can avoid the rotors by going with a ceramic brake pad, theyre usually pretty low on Dust. And for you that want No Dust, go with akebono's
Jesus Calderon Jesus. Rotors are original, and in fine condition still, nearly ten years old. No vibrations at speed and fantastic bite! Hawk HPS pads are now two years old, and we're very happy with them.
***** im sure rotors are way under spec. I mean, you can even see a lip on the outer sides of it from where its worn out, yeah they'll hold, but you do run the risk of them snapping or cracking under a heavy brake. And two years on the same pads??? Thats insane man, i change the pads every 4-6 months and average about 400 miles a month. You gotta fix that lol
You can keep the old pad on the caliper when compressing the piston. Makes it easier as you have a bigger surface for the clamp to compress and it reduces the risk of hurting the piston.
Did brake jobs on an '07 Infinity M35 X, '02 Lexus SC 430. Thanks to you I will can do it for my wife's '06 530i.

Bishop’s Reviews, diy, and fun vids go ceramic it helps plus little better wet performance
excellent video....will save alot of people mega money on expensive dealer prices. More DIY videos please guys....every little helps!
Thanks for this usefull information !
I am struggling with the exact same problem, in just a 200 mile drive the rims are completely black from the breakdust !
I am gonne try to get those pads here in holland.
Thanks, doing my front pads this week, hopefully it goes as smoothly as your vid!
Awesome video! Is your dad going to upgrade the taillights to the OEM 2010 led model ?
Why did you replaced them? They were still quite good. 40% still to go safely.
should be clamping the brake lines and bleeding the fluid out the bleed nipple when compressing the pistons otherwise it is possible to do damage to the seals in the master cylinder through back feeding , you could also make the reservoir overfill this way and have brake fluid eat out the paint down your firewall. when replacing pads properly with the nipple open it is recommended to do a small bleed at the same time . cheers
been doing brakes for over 10 years never had a master cylinder seal damage.
Ash HAVEN BMW that is a myth that the dealer tells you to try and make you bring it to them the resi when your breaks need to be done should be lower than max anyway been doing my e60 since 10000 miles now have over 130000
Thanks for the video, i installed my akebonos in the rear yesterday along with a new sensor. everything went smooth with the help of your video.
Glad our video helped you out!

***** quick question, can that clip on the front calipers be put on by one person and is it really that hard?
Damen Smalls You can do it yourself, it just takes some playing with to get it back on.
How can you tell if they are worn? I have a 2006 m5 and I was wondering if you could just change the pads?
Great video. I was trying to find something like this on youtube and i believe you are the first one with a video on the e60. Dont you have to replace the rotors to with the m5?
lourian iankov no not unless they are groved
Hey, how is the breaking compared to the oem pads ? Is it better / worse ?
thanks for doing the video .... but my bmw is a 2011 equipped with electronic calipers ...i need to know what brake scanner i need to buy to get into the car to release the calipers ??
THANKS IN ADVANCE
I thought you weren't supposed to jack on the diff fins?
That is the only rear end jacking point if a lift is not available.
I’m surprised that the rotors didn’t come with slots stock, just drilled. I don’t know if I should buy drilled or drilled/slotted rotors.
Slotted rotors wear pads faster and don't stop as well, its purely for looks. Drilled rotors remove surface material and also decrease stopping performance. They are only useful on the track to dissipate heat faster.
Awesome! hell yeah ! thank you for this video and also for the time saved trying to figure out the torque when mounting the wheels back!
Hai brother we have a bmw m5 2018 model and it have a hydraulic E brake .
Is it possible to fix a additional drift brake with handle
Anything is possible, but that wouldn't be easy. Drifting a $120,000 car is quite un-advisable.
nice video. im gonna do the brake job in the next couple days for my E71 X6M. your video is really helpful. The only thing im not sure with is should i use grease for the bolts or not?
+Pei Su I like to use never-seize on the bolts so they come apart easier next time. Glad this helped!
thanks a lot for this great video! this helped me out pretty much with my 535D e61 :)
your videos are very detailed and helpful, you've save me k's
I'm doing this job on my 535d this week. Didn't you have to drain some of the brake fluid from the reservoir?
+Robert K If the pads are VERY worn, then you might, yes. You can use a clean turkey baster for that.
Thanks for answering. My pads are worn out so I have already bought a horse sized syringe for that purpose. 👌😂 The 535d uses the same pads as the M5, but the M5 disks are a little bit bigger. I'm sure the calipers are bigger too.
Thanks, very helpful.
Very similar to my 2006 525i.
Thanks for the reply Kennan !
Just curious why won't he have the car for long? he's the original owner?

Do you know where to rotors could be gotten for cheaper? Everywhere I look the rotors are $500 a peice...
ECS Tuning sells both fronts for $692.78, and FCP Euro has them for $327.54 a piece.
Could you make a video on how to change the oil on 2006 E60 M5 ?
+Shvan Ahmad It can't be hard man. Jesus.
Shvan Ahmad You would be surprised.
What about bleeding the brakes ?
Not necessary when just doing pads... Computer in E60 recommends when bleeding should be done.
front starts at 4:56
for viewing convenience.
How do I paint my Brake Calipers?
They should be removed, sand blasted, and powder-coated to do it right.
Just lash some hammer right n like this cabbage
thanks for sharing, i need to change my rear pads also. i was thinking of akebono or stoptechs but you seem to give hawk pads a good review. let me check them out. the oem pads definitely leave alot of brake dust. thanks again.
Yeah I would recommend the Hawks. They might make more dust after a year or two of use though? Or it' just me being picky.
i actually ended up buying the akebono's for the rear.
what's the torque for the caliper bolts
nightowlbg 25nm
is it possible to put those brakes on an E39
Anything is possible if you're willing to spend the time and the money on it. However.. E39 brakes are quite good, and you can upgrade any E39 to the M5 brakes if you don't have an M5. Dont have to take all that off tp get to brake fluid reservoir. There's a cap to lift up after taking out air filter.
no brake sensor change ?

Well done and very informative.
akebonos produce low dust, but the have no stopping power
carfreakkk very true.people should know this
excellent video great help!
Grease the guide bolts before reinstalling

are you a bmw tech???
+alex1nyny Nope!
Great video
Clean car so obviously well kept-- I think with a car like that I would have flushed the brake fluid unless its been done recently? I am sure you saved yourself a few hours BMW shop labor not to mention the price of factory pads
The brake fluid was done by a professional around this time.
Awesome!!!
good video thx.
Nice!
Really nice car dude
Practicing :) .
I don’t care about cabin air filter
smallest rear brakes in the world lol

You gotta fix that lol
Jesus Calderon The rotors are a good 1/2" thick, they'll never snap. Averaging around 400 miles per month, pads should last a solid 6-8 years.
Jesus Calderon Just because it shows a small lip doesn't mean it's out of spec. My 85k rear M5 rotors had a large lip and were only
Jesus Calderon you clearly have no idea what shit looks like
shouldnt you change out the sensors when changing the pads?
Yes.
***** ok, wasnt sure, but someone else said that.
