Johnny Maestro Tribute

  • In light of the recent death of the late, great Johnny Maestro, I wanted to step away from my usual interests and make a video tribute to a musician who has been dubbed one of the greatest voices of our time.
Johnny Maestro began his career with The Crests in the 1950s, the first interracial doo wop group, and despite the ignorance around them, the group had many big songs. In 1968, Maestro combined two groups and formed the 11 member Brooklyn Bridge. Johnny's career spanned 5 decades and included great hits like "Worst That Could Happen," "Blessed is The Rain" and "16 Candles."
I am dedicating this tribute to my father (Roy B. of Brooklyn. NY) - the #1 Johnny Maestro fan - and all of Mr. Maestro's fans around the world. I hope this video brings back great memories for everyone and can serve as a way to honor the legendary Johnny Maestro, 1939-2010.
    The Crests - 16 Candles (1958)
The Crests - Step By Step (1960)
Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge - Worst That Could Happen (1968)
Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge - Blessed is the Rain (1968)
Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge - You'll Never Walk Alone (1969)
"I'd give my right arm to have a voice like Johnny!" - Dad
    Love you,
    Lisa

Three of the greatest singing voices and musical timing in all of Rock n'Roll were shared by Johnny Maestro, Jimmy Beaumont and James Sheppard. Not one of these three greats happens to be in the R n'R Hall of Fame, which makes me wonder what purpose it really serves, if any.

Johnny died on my Birthday last year and I just found out about it. I send my sympathy to his family. He had one of the purest voices I've ever heard. Saw him about 20 years ago in NJ and met him. Tried to take his picture with my husband but I had no film in the camera. Johnny found this funny. I'm glad I made him smile as he did me with his beautiful voice. I told him his voice was just as strong as it was when he first started and he told me he practiced every day. What a talent.

Johnny had such a fantastic pitch perfect voice. Gorgeous to listen to. We need this music to be read released today....OMG..." Girl you're getting married...but it's the worst that could happen to me" wow.... I loved his songs so much. And the backup singers had such harmony . He sang his songs right up until the end. Sing on Johnny...you'll never walk alone as long as we have your footprint on vinyl. ⚘🎶⭐🎶⚘

We would get there early to get good seats, sing to every song, drink a lot of booze & just have a great time. We followed him for years. Last saw him at the Surf Club in Ortley Beach not too long before he passed. Listening to his songs take me back to simpler times. My 3 children became fans also. Though they were not around in his early years they still loved him and his music.

In 1969 & 1970, I was first a roadie, then road manager for the BB. I just dug out an old scrapbook from a long bus tour and our trip to LA where they cut a song for a movie called "The Grasshopper" @ the old Sam Goldwin studios. We also played Disneyland and I think I have a pic of either Artie or Joe at the Universal Studios tour. I think we stopped on the way to play New Year's Eve in Houston. There were 5 or 6 stages and I'm pretty sure one stage was Fats Domino. I do have a pic of Artie & me that night. Then thereafter playing Vegas opening for Carol Channing. The roadies were a revolving door, and I was passed the briefcase when Danny tired of the road. But the greatest moment of all was one night on the bus when Ritchie got out an acoustic guitar and Johnny, Freddie, Les, and Mike brought the 60's back to life! I will always cherish those times.

I grew up listening to this music I did not know anything about Johnny maestro until I listened to this song the other day and started looking up members of the band just out of curiosity. Since then I have been obsessed with knowing more about him and listening to all of his songs. I regret that I never saw him in concert. I agree that it is shameful that so many inferior singers are in the hall of fame and he is not.
