  • We may wear casual attire at CME, but nothing makes us feel fancy quite like this 1969 Gibson ES-355! One of the fanciest of Gibson’s thinline guitars, this 1969 ES-355 comes with all the bells and whistles that set it apart, like the Varitone switch and stereo output jack, plus some pre-transitional appointments, like its one-piece mahogany neck-making this already rare find truly one-of-a-kind! More About the Gibson 355:
The ES-355TD (Thinline semi-hollow, Double pickups) was at the top of Gibson's range of thinline semi-hollowbody electric guitars. It was manufactured from 1958 to 1982, fitted with the Varitone Stereo option (SV), as the ES-355TD-SV released in 1959. This guitar is now available in reissues from Gibson's main line or custom shop.
The headstock has a split-diamond inlay rather than the smaller crown inlay on the 335/345, in addition to a multiple-layered binding. The fingerboard inlays are inlaid mother-of-pearl blocks, beginning at the first position of the fretboard. In addition to the headstock, binding is also applied to the fretboard and both the front and the back edges of the body. Rather than the rosewood fretboard on a 335 or 345, both variations of the 355 have an ebony fingerboard for a 'smoother' sound. Reissues use a richlite fingerboard. Early models of Epiphone's limited edition budget version had an ebony fingerboard but the later issues had a rosewood board. The ES-355 was available with a Vibrola vibrato unit or a Bigsby vibrato tailpiece. It was also available with a stereo output and Varitone tone filter circuitry. When fitted with the optional stereo wiring and Varitone, the model was known as the ES-355TD-SV.

I have that exact model and vintage, ‘cept it’s a refin in creamy white, which looks amazing against the gold hardware. Love it.

Had the choice between a `68 with this Maestro and a ´67 with factory mounted Bigsby.
Took the one with the Bigsby and I love it.
The Varitone isn´t that great, but I leave it as it is.
    Dream guitar!!
All I have to do now is to practice....
Well done video! Had to smile as the "third hand" appeared. Super idea!

I’m on the hunt for a 335 but prefer a maple neck to a rosewood. I’ve now just discovered there are 335s out there with ebony fretboards which has blown my mind!

I sorta believe the existence of the prototypes, but its the myth that Gibson ever produced them i dont believe. Aside from this video and a couple of others, and Clapton playing one on Cream's farwell tour, and some clones, nobody ever demo's a new amp with one. I suspect, instead, the guitar in this video and the one Clapton played were the prototypes that Gibson originally made but never produced. Finally, some 50 years later, a few other foreign guitar makers got a hold of some of the prototypes and decided on a skeme to manufacture and market them. They cloned the prototypes in varitions as if Gibson had produced them and put them for sell on the internet for crazy, unheard of prices no one could afford as a marketing ploy. Then, they put their clones in mass production as new guitars for comparatively bargin prices. Although Gibson couldn't stop these mega companies producing clones from their prototypes, they are able to scare video makers around the globe of potential lawsuits if they make videos of the Mickey Mouse ears guitars. So, believe whatever you want to believe, that Gibson actually manufactured these guitars over the years.

Had an 79 Gibson Les Paul Cherry Custom guitar I paid $550.00 for back in 82
hated it, hated the back bindings, hated the string height, the tuning, the weight
the color..and was afraid after my front door was almost smashed in someone
I met was trying to come and steal it while I was at work so I sold it. Even now
still glad its gone, worst guitar ever, but probly someones greatest joy. worth $3600.00?
ya who cares. money isnt everything, peace love and joy are far greater. Rock on people!!!!
