Matthew Scott, Matteo Mancuso and Mateus Asato. A holy trinity of three Matthews! My favorite guitarrists of today. Greetings from Rubens Mateus, Brazil!
Johnny Winter was my first guitar hero. He said in an interview that the only effect he used was a bit of Boss Chorus. I first saw Johnny with Rick Derringer in 1970. They both had a stack of 7 or 8 Fender Twin Reverb amps.
Johnny in 1970 with Derringer was my first concert ever. It was at Pirate’s World in Dania Bch, FL. They recorded half of the Johnny Winter And Live that night. Definitely a lifetime highlight.
Hi Matthew, that guitar sounds amazing, but what's more important is that as the owner took good care of it, and I can imagine him, being so happy that is played and cared, by such a good player and good person as you seem to be. Take care. Congratulations to you and him.
I can almost smell the “fermentation” of the funk coming outta that case! Beautiful example You should be proud to find it and family willing to let go 😢
The Firebird is my favorite electric Gibson, and natural stained wood finishes are the best. What a magical looking guitar! Another great video, Matthew!
Thanks for sharing these great instruments with us! Killer axe! Been addicted to your album as well, it’s fantastic! The riff on Cold Blooded Story is wicked! Keep this stuff coming man!
Matthew your playing is always amazing I think you chops are consistently evolving and man That first couple minutes of your playing were so soulful! Blew me away keep it up It’s so enjoyable to watch And the firebird is a keeper Peace
What a fantastic guitar 🎸!!!! When I “kick the bucket” I told my wife to sell all of my gear. Get it into someone else’s hands that will play them. 🎸🔥🎸🔥🎸
Doesn't sound out-of-phase to me in the middle position. It sounds like that "less-hot" middle sound with some old pickups. Cool guitar for sure. It's nice to get to see these old birds. Thanks!
Was never a huge fan of Firebirds. But this one… Oh Matt, this one is incredible!! The tone, paired with the two vintage Fender amps, blew me away. Your skillful playing helps greatly. Thanks man.
I could listen to that all day. The very beginning of the jam was just beautiful......I am a lefty, those arent out there in lefty and if they are, they are astronomicaly priced.
The banjo tuners are unhelpful in various ways, but the neck heaviness on a rev Firebird is mostly due to the position of the front strap button it's several inches back from where it needs to be. Depending how you play, you might find that a much longer or shorter strap than usual will help. Sounds great, by the way, especially on the pickup mix, almost a comb filter sound :) Thanks for the video.
The Firebirds are probably the most stylish feminine guitars ever produced. I have a reverse and non-reverse. They are both incredible testimonials to the "golden years" of Gibson. Stunning looks and sounds! Great looks, great sounds, great player. Matthew, you are so reminiscent of Peter Green. Thank you for being here for us.
I had one of those 10 years ago. Sounded amazing! If you put strap locks on it you could hear every dang movement of the strap. Pickups were probably needed potting bit just screwed the strap underneath the buttons. Those are beast guitars and highly underrated. Mine had the sideways vibrola.
I remember when we saw the Stones on ed Sullivan and Keef had a Firebird and Bri had a Firebird 😵💫😵💫 as the boys said it’s a killer guitar!! Matthew is the man!! 🎉🎉🎉
You are right, it might be the best sounding Gibson ever - and I’m saying this as an owner of a P90 Special. But this one just sounds phenomenal. Wonder how the original PU would sound in the bridge… Great find!
It makes me happy to see such a treasure in the hands of someone like you. You work hard at what you do and it shows. Thanks for the video and the sweet audio.
Absolutely love vintage, rare, "valuable" guitars that were modded in period and survived. When that guitar was just a guitar and not a collectible "piece", someone made the correct mod to improve the sound and you are fortunate to own what is the physical document of a good idea that someone executed without care for what it could do to the value. How could they have known? I love, love, love these kinds of stories. That thing is amazing, thanks.
I just got a Partscaster Tele that was pretty sticky and dirty...cleaned it up, adjusted bridge, a little fret work and it is is amazing!.... Thanks Matthew, get your pen ready , I just bought your signed CD ;)
I have one of these with slight variations which came into the UK in the mid 1970s. My '64 or possibly a 1965 has the headstock pointing the opposite direction so the tooling was for the next edition. The guitar was purchased from Frank Lucido when the UK bands visited California, My guitar came via this method. Another excellent little film Matthew.
Boomer fan here. That neck pickup sound seems soooo familiar from the late sixties. I have no idea what bands or guitarists might have used this particular instrument but, boy does your playing a few chords and notes bring back a viseral feeling from my youth !!
Pretty good sounding w/ plenty of that mojo drippin Firebird vibe. Adding another solid old Gibson w/ a beautifully checked finish in a unique color scheme to your collection. Priceless find.
True, a red one like this sold for 60 k! It was all original. So few built in custom colors. Try finding a custom color firebird VII with gold hardware.. holy grail
Wow, that's such a sweet find and the cherry finish is, well... the cherry on top 😮 I sincerely hope you'll give that original bridge pickup a chance, as it's an amazing sounding pickup, kinda a strat/tele/humbucker hybrid. Hugely underrated type and even if you have to get it rewound, it's still a '64. It's not like there isn't a spot for an original Patent No. PAF in another guitar in your collection too 😂
Ahhh, very nice and flavorful playing! The guitar is a beauty, and as always I can appreciate the nice setup and tuning. I could not afford to buy one of these (10-12K) and so bought a new Epiphone - which plays and sounds very nice indeed. Johnny!!!!
Bro your videos never disappoint! Your knowledge of guitar, and its history, combined with your video making and guitar skills is awesome! Also had to add your music onto my Spotify playlist! Keep it up! 🎸🔥
Comparison coming up between the OG bridge pup and the humbucker? YES please :) Surely the OG would be better for fuzz right? So just for that it would be my choice. Thank you Matt
In a word, well 3 words…it’s a keeper! Simply for the freakin “COOL” factor , plus Winters & Clapton played them. “PLAY ON MAN!” Another name came up Kal David who used to play with Mayall
Hey great video on a beautiful FB!! Love those Pick up sounds and that PAT Number pick up is awesome. Thank you for pointing out the PAT # sticker on the Fire Bird P.U. in the box, IMO these are some of the most flexible sounding PU's Gibson ever made. It's also interesting to note that a lot of folks don't know that Fire Bird Pick Up's are not Mini Humbuckers or that there are PAF Mini Humbuckers! It looks as if there has been work done at the bridge post location? Maybe it's just the way the light hits it. Now following, Thanks for sharing!
Alternate method: Look under deceased rocker relative's bed. I know of a cherry red '59 les Paul junior that is in the attic of ex-relatives owned old house....just haven't located title to where house is ...
When I saw the mod I thought why? But then you played it and wow…it’s brilliant…so alive sounding

That fuzz outro was phenomenal! You should pull the bridge pickup and see when it's from.
I typically dont like neck pickups but that one sounds absolutely beautiful
Hi Matthew, that guitar sounds amazing, but what's more important is that as the owner took good care of it, and I can imagine him, being so happy that is played and cared, by such a good player and good person as you seem to be. Take care. Congratulations to you and him.

The original owner is looking down and smiling knowing his Firebird has landed in good hands.
The Firebird is my favorite electric Gibson, and natural stained wood finishes are the best. What a magical looking guitar! Another great video, Matthew!
They are cool!
The neck pickup sounds incredible, I am genuinely blown away
that bridge pup is killer
🙏🏻🤟🏻
9/10 and you can eq the last 10%
Put a great vintage guitar in the right hands and it sounds phenomenal - great playing as always.
Thanks for sharing these great instruments with us! Killer axe! Been addicted to your album as well, it’s fantastic! The riff on Cold Blooded Story is wicked! Keep this stuff coming man!
Man that means so much to me man. Thank you for watching and saying that about Cold Blooded! 🤟🏻
That neck pickup is just so special… Great guitar!
It truly is!

Thank you very much.
What a fantastic guitar 🎸!!!! When I “kick the bucket” I told my wife to sell all of my gear. Get it into someone else’s hands that will play them. 🎸🔥🎸🔥🎸
Luckily, I have many family members who play. Otherwise, I'd do the same.
Mine are going to my daughters
And then she will find out how much you really paid for them😂😂😂
@@266sopwith told my wife I wanted a strymon big sky. BIG MISTAKE!
You near dead yet ? I need some new gear

At 16:15 when you went to the nec pickup it was such an improvement. Listening through my laptop speaker but the difference was pronounced to my ear
So happy to hear whatever axe and have some reverb on the amp. can not stand a dry signal unless its for a recording session.
New hairstyle looks sick man
I think it looks healthy :)
Are you female?
😫 🤒 😷 🤧 🤢 🤮
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Looks great, but I miss the hair 😊
Allen Collins!! Definitely remember him rocking the firebird. Also, we share a birhtday! Great find Matthew! Lets hear it live soon!
That's awesome!
Collins changed to the Explorer as main tool in later years. He also played other brands and models. I guess you already knew this...:)
Thanks!
Thanks so much Scott.
7:59 this part is so so good I have to learn it.
Was never a huge fan of Firebirds. But this one… Oh Matt, this one is incredible!! The tone, paired with the two vintage Fender amps, blew me away. Your skillful playing helps greatly. Thanks man.
That neck pickup is very nice but really like that bridge pickup and the 2 together is awesome.
oh man that middle position out of faze what dreams are made of ,, the previous owner certainly new what tone he was after ,, great great score

That just reignited my old thurst for a firebird. Man, that's a gorgeous midrange.
Like the sound of the original pick-up. Had to me kind of an old haunting sound with some reverb.

Stunning looks and sounds! Great looks, great sounds, great player. Matthew, you are so reminiscent of Peter Green. Thank you for being here for us.
And I wanna die when I’m reminded I sold my 63 Reverb. Every time. I’ve never sold an instrument or amp since 😅 Your rig is ❤

Wow. I take my hat off to you sir. That tone. Those hands.
A top review of a top guitar. So nice to get away from all the LP hype for a short while. Great playing as always. Many thanks for all your effort.
Great find. Neck and bridge both sound great.
the pickup mix sounds amazing!! Better than normal les pauls, SGs, etc. Awesome playing!
I don’t think I’ve heard you have a better tone. That beastie is incredible.
The world needs more players like you. Rock on
Sounds like one of your amps needs a little help.
I really dig the see-through cherry stain!! Good on you, Matthew!

You played that guitar exactly how it was meant to be played and it sounded great. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for listening!
Impressive electric guitar and awesome playing!!!
Sounds incredible overall, but..oh my gosh, those fuzz tones were the best part of the video Matt, keep rockin' buddy ✌️
Great playing & those amps sound killer !!!
This is the reason you love vintage gear mate what a gem
Beautiful axe...played beautifully. Especially starting around 15:20, channeling Clapton in a raucous rendition of Spoonful.
I like it more than I would have expected. Almost a strat single coil clarity to it with a kind of SG bark
Exactly!👍🏻
Yes I have a Firebird1, it sounds like a super telecaster!!
@@grahambell4310 yeah ok I was more in the good strat middle pickup mindset during the first half at least
Oh my goodness I love firebirds! I’m planning on getting an Epiphone firebird really soon because firebirds are the best!
Incredible guitar … great tone … wonderful playing
Fantastic find, and an excellent addition to your arsenal.
This was possibly the coolest and best sounding guitar you've showcased on your channel.
