Cool video! This is the first time I’ve heard a Gibson stereo guitar through a stereo amp. In the early ‘70s I had a ‘67 ES-345, but I never had a stereo amp to run it through, and when I tried to run it through both channels on my Fender Twin Reverb, the two-pickup setting was out of phase. That’s a Fender amp thing-the channels are out of phase with each other. The only way I could use both pickups in phase with effects on both was to cut off the Y-end of the stereo cable and replace it with a mono plug, both hot wires wired together and both grounds the same, converting it into a stereo-into-mono cable. I figured that would be easier than rewiring the guitar! I didn’t use the Varitone much either; just the first two positions-#1 was no Varitone, full humbucking, and #2 was kind of a faux single-coil sound. My experience was that the stereo and Varitone were gimmicks that I didn’t need, and I got rid of the guitar after a few years. I always wondered how BB King got such a great sound out of his 355! I’d certainly play a mono one, but the 345 wasn’t available with that option. I got mine used anyway-it was only four or five years old when I got it in 1972. The new Epiphone Inspired By…ES-355 is mono, no Varitone. Good choice, Epiphone!

I am blessed with a 1973 ES-355 which I dearly love. Very neat to run into two different amps. Just got a 1954 Gibson GA-20 which I have not collected from the store yet. Am much hoping it blends well with one of my current Fender amps. And yes. Gibson tremolos are the best on the planet, except perhaps, the blonde Tremolux amps. Glad so many of you guys are digging this guitar and amp ... It is a HUGE sound when run into a Fender Twin and a Fender Super Reverb or Showman with both pickups running!!!

Consider building with other preamp designs like tweed/BF/Marshall/Vox, i am not too impressed with how these amps sound on their without the bells and whistles of the dry/wet combination. What i mean is, that if people compare this to a double AC15, then i'd go for the double AC15 anytime.

  • @Tonetwisters

This rig is just SO alive. If you run both pickups into the same channel, you get them out-of-phase, which is yet one more really neat sound.

I worked on one of these once, but it had a slightly different configuration than this one. Still had the same tone tricks though. Replace that cap, and it will have some real bite to it. They get mean sounding when you turn them up, but the reverb is little more on off than I would like. Tremolo rocks on them. Link Wray time for the cranked tone. They made them up until 67 or so, and internally its a pretty nice little board layout so you don't have any PTP wiring rats nest to work around.

Jimmy Keller of Spokane's Playboys had the ES-355 Stereo guitar and the Gibson stereo amp. In a fit of marital distress, he smashed the guitar to bits with a hammer and gave the amp to his little brother Larry Keller. Larry already had the family Goldtop Les Paul that had the trapeze tailpiece originally, but was changed to the stopbar/TunaMatic version. That guitar was purchased new by father Jim Keller for Jimmy, handed down to younger brother Mike Keller, then to youngest brother Larry. One of Larry's buddies came home on furlough from the war in Viet Nam, visited Larry, got drunk, and dropped the Les Paul and sheared the headstock clean off. A local craftsman glued it back together but the result was not great. True story Soldier's name was Jimmy Plunkett (not the famous football guy).

I have an es355 that I'm sending in to have a new harness made and installed, and I was really into the stereo sound, the wiring guy is talking me out of it. I already have a Roland Jazz Chorus amp with 2 amps built in, so I'm in stereo there, but my pedals are not all stereo! Stereo volume and what? I can't buy all new pedals!
Also, even in this video you can see he says the wet effects are on one channel/pickup. So it must be that one you select just one pickup you lose the other sounds, half your amount and the effects that were only on one side. I'd really like to know if that's correct because it seems more of a headache to wire and run the stereo.
    Any experience tips are welcome!!
