I am SO rooting for the end of shein and those ridiculous hauls! I am not quite a fashion girlie, but I try my best to be an ethical consumer and thus naturally gravitate towards thrift shopping, hand-me-downs, and second-hand buys. I completely understand wanting to purchase new (cute!) clothes for an affordable cost - I have done it before, I won't lie - because in this economy there's no way I'm buying a $40 tshirt... but in the end I feel better knowing my money is NOT directly funding unethical practices. It does feel like an uphill battle when you consider the fact that H&M, forever 21, target, zara, uniqlo, urban outfitters, brandy melville, old navy, and basically every other clothing store is almost as bad as shein is.
I am on the same page! I thrift a ton, but I still buy new things. For me it’s all about making sure it’s stuff I love and will get lots of wear out of 😊
I have noticed lately that I am very turned off by the “shein” look. And it’s everywhere, Target has the same types of sweaters to but I’m at the point where I’m embarrassed to wear it cause it’s glaringly obvious that it’s a cheap, poorly constructed, poor material garment. I’m just gonna thrift my stuff more. There’s so much good quality things to be found out there! Awesome video! Really agree with so much that you said!
omg I totally feel that way about target now too!!! They used to have pretty good basics and staple wardrobe items but now Wild Fable has gone crazy with the y2k-ish/shein styles 😭 i feel like it makes me look like a middle schooler which is not the vibe I want 😂
I’ve literally been focusing on serious hair care, avoiding polyester like the plague, and looking for pearls and waistcoats recently so I think you’re so on the money here. Also v excited for everything in the riding boots, Peter Pan collar, 2010s does prep category 😍
Just looking at polyester makes me itch. I react to a lot of synthetic anything, polyester is the worst tho. I really don't like that fabric, whether it causes a reaction or not, I cannot stand it. For me it's like wearing one of those weight loss steam suits, that makes me sweat just thinking about it 😶🌫
the issue with the 'europeans are polished/always look good' idea isnt just that its incorrect and based in romanticism but that its fundamentally classist and erases the majority of the european population. theres no harm in being more specific than just 'european' in future
Thank you for the clarification! I hadn’t thought of it in this way. I lived in Germany for a couple years and I guess my experience is tailored to that area 😊
It's also very based on big European cities like Paris and Rome. I wish people in my country actually put some effort into their fashion, they mostly wear basic jeans and basic sweaters or crewnecks and also a lot of athleisure wear.
@@michaeladickson I think a lot of countries follow that culture of always dressing up no matter how small the errand is. Although I hear this more commonly for Europe, I know this to be true for a fact in Mexico and I have heard similarly from Asian countries. I think that although generalizations are always tough, there is some truth to how in certain countries it is more commonly accepted to be super casual while in other countries it is not.
I studied fashion and I can confirm, that this degree doesn't matter at all to make predictions, so don't worry. I often feel like even ppl that didn't study it are more open & aware of things. idk how to describe it.
i had a bonnet last winter, maybe even the winter before...not to say i am ahead of fashion at all, just that trends are super duper quick. bonnets are actually quite timeless. i also think that ballet flats will be more mainstream. i have seen a lot of youtubers getting ballet flats in their haul in the last year, particularly miu miu. i think a lot of the trends you are describing are basically alexa chung circa 2010. we've moved past early 2000s and are now onto 2010. 2010s were peter pan collars, ballet flats, little flicks in hair, they were 60s reconnaisance but done in a 2000s way. i don't mind trends much but i like when people do something new with those trends. hoping to see that in the new year. thanks heaps for the content. just adding my two cents (sorry it's long lol).
I love comments like this!! Super cool to hear what people are thinking about what’s happening in fashion right now. I totally agree we are moving into a 2010’s inspired era (which I don’t hate??)
@@michaeladickson thanks for being open to feedback! Alexa chung just wrote a piece on why they think that kinda fashion is coming back. Man fashion trends are so fast right now that if you stick with the recent ones, in like 5 years you will be seen as being ahead of the times and reigning in the "new trend" a few years later. 😂 It is crazy for 2010 to already be back. That wasn't even 15 years yet! At least the 90s comeback was 20-30 years back.
honestly was burning through the 2024 trends predictions videos on a 3am binge but your video was honestly very lovely and i really loved your commentary! i think these are really great trends and overviews on the trends that we're beginning to see (and that hopefully emerge this year); fingers personally crossed for bonnets because i love that sort of lolita (the j-fashion term, not the novel LOL) look

(if it hasnt been mentioned) Quince has a $50 cashmere sweater (100%) that is LOVELY. I have one and am definitely planning on getting more. They actually have a lot of affordable, quality products, and I have a lot on my little wish list! With that sweater, I'd say if you are between sizes, order up, or order up if you want it looser. I am a s/m and ordered a medium and it is a nice, comfortable fitted 'fit' (not too tight, not loose, just the 'right' accurate true to size fit). If I had wanted it a bit looser, I would have been disappointed. *usually* mediums are looser than this sweater is on me. They also have a great return policy.

Yes I agree!!! I looove finding second hand vintage and recently have discovered how good eBay can be for vintage leather 😍 thanks for the comment and subscribe 🥰🩷
Had to come down here and comment about the leggings thing- I wore leggings outside of my apartment to go work out and for no other reason when I lived in Spain. I wore leggings to the grocery store ONCE and felt everyone staring at me. Literally never again 😭
In my late teens I sprained my ankle at the beach. Had issues wearing heels ever since. It would give out even not in heels occasionally. This past Halloween it finally fractured 😭 being a 37yr old mother of 2 I'm not worried about not being able to wear heels but def holding on to the flat shoe trend till my death 😂
Everyone should do what I did, buy fake bangs. When you get the urge, put them on. I have this fantasy of bangs working for me (love some sharp bobs with bangs). But I don't think it would work with my fine hair, I also do no styling whatsoever and don't want to "need" to. And yes please end the Shein trend. I've never ordered from there, but if I was younger I probably would have (harder to avoid/stop yourself). Quality, good work conditions and minimal environmental impact should always be trendy! :)
Polyester and fast fashion are definitely trending for the 2020s. It’s trendy right now to buy heaps of clothes every few months on websites like shein or temu. Overconsumption is the problem here because many of these clothes are worn once and then donated/thrown out. Clothes from these websites are often unnatural fibers like polyester which is not as durable as natural fibers and does not break down once thrown out. I also said that fast fashion is fine if you are consuming it in reasonable quantities and that when possible to look for natural fibers at fast fashion stores. I buy fast fashion because a $15 100% cotton t shirt from Uniqlo is more accessible to me than an $80 100% cotton t shirt from an ethical slow fashion brand. My hope is that people buy clothes they cherish and wear often instead of buying and dumping.
@@michaeladicksonthis is so true!! I'll also throw out there that many communities have nonprofits that give away clothes for those who don't have the means or very low cost (like fill a bag for a price) for the general public who may not be eligible for assistance but still can't afford consignment. That's where we get most of our clothes. Everything from like old 80s clothes to currently trending items. And for all ages and stages. Literally just got 3 of my boys some lightly used Nikes for $1 each yesterday as we opt for quality with how hard they wear them out. Minimizing wardrobes can also help people have a closet of quality pieces. If all other options fail, there are also local buy nothing groups. I have donated items on there when we haven't given to the local nonprofit that we shop at and people are constantly giving plenty of good quality items. So I agree that occasional purchases of fast fashion sites isn't super problematic, it is when it is to excess. Most mass made clothes have this issue and I even noticed people starting these boutiques just upcharging on Shein & Temu items. So first and foremost, I think reusing, making do with what we have, and buying used should be what we aim for before looking used and go from there. To assume low income families have to buy cheap quality items by default is a little insulting and a weird way to try and avoid responsibility. I have a large family and we literally turn our utilities down and take money we save to buy clothing items we need as we don't have a place for it in the budget at the moment. But it works and we still generally get high quality items. Just not in excess. And I have bought stuff off of Shein and Temu before, but only when we need specific items that I can't find reasonably priced elsewhere and I have been happy with our purchases, but low income doesn't mean you have to purchase from there by any means. So many other alternatives. This year my goal is patience. If I don't find it used then I will wait and find it when I find it or do without. Though at least 80% of what I'm looking for I do find at some point. Some trends are so fast though that I notice I should have just skipped the item!
Interesting! I think the bright yellow makes people look like they are 12. 😂 I do like mustard yellow though! Just a lot more flattering and cozy looking. It gives me more autumn time vibes than prepubescent, like bright yellow.
I also prefer and love natural materials and I am avoiding polyester in clothing...but about wool or cashmere I am worried about animal welfare. I also don't buy leather.....

I also prefer and love natural materials and I am avoiding polyester in clothing...but about wool or cashmere I am worried about animal welfare. I also don't buy leather.....
