The Republic of Ireland Tayto company was started in 1954 by my father Tayto Joe Murphy and he licensed the name to Tommy Hutchinson of Antrim Northern Ireland in 1956. That’s why they are the original Irish crisps. The company is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year (2024)

Ad an Englishman living in Ireland have to say learned from my Dublin born father the real Tayto are the red packet. Also the company to invent cheese and onion flavour crisp and they are amazing in a sandwich. There is also another brand called King Crisp. These are the best.

I have tried both NI and the RoI Tayto crisps. Personally, I love the strong flavour of the Northern Irish crisps, the Republic's crisps are flavourless and insipid. As a complete aside, can I say how brilliant it is to see and hear a Non-Irishman get so ENTHUSED about an island-wide product! Glad to hear the NI crisp wins! 😋😋😋😏😏😏
Tayto in the republic have their own theme park on the site where they manufacture their crisps ,well worth checking out its just outside Dublin. Its aptly named Tayto park and when you have had enough of the roller coaster you can do a tour of the factory.

I absolutely loved Taytos. The original small Red packet ones, I think the ones from the Republic. My nan was from County Longford and I used to go there many times as a kid. Very beautiful place. Taytos for me were the ultimate cheese and onion flavour, I would put them just ahead of Golden Wonder because they were more consistent in taste and miles ahead of Walkers which just lack any strong flavour. I haven't had them for like 10 years now as they are impossible to get in stores in England. Lidl do the big packet yellow thick crisp ones sometimes but they are awful.

You are indeed correct, the Republic of Ireland Tayto crisps were first produced in 1954, the Northern Irish Tayto crisps were first produced two years later in 1956.
How can you not concede considering its a fact? Joe Murphy didn't just create Tayto, he created flavoured crisps which the entire world now enjoys.

Tayto was established by Joe ‘Spud’ Murphy in 1954 at a time when most crisps were imported from the UK and were unflavoured bar the small blue bag of salt included in each bag to enhance the flavour. Spotting a niche in the Irish market, Joe Murphy set up his own crisp factory. Credited with inventing the first ever Cheese & Onion flavoured crisps, the brand name Tayto has now become synonymous with crisps across Ireland.
Production of the Cheese & Onion flavour crisps started in a factory on Moore Street, Dublin, where after being packed by hand in waxed greaseproof paper, the crisps were delivered to the retailer in an airtight tin, to help maintain their freshness.
I love crisps but funnily enough Cheese and Onion are the only flavour I don't like, these looked nice quality though, I'd try other flavours though..👍
I've tried Tayto crisps from the North and they're very nice. The brand is different from the one in the Republic of Ireland 🇮🇪. I like them both and they both taste nice as well.

If you go to the shop 'home bargains' they sell Tayto crisps. The chip shop curry ones are decent.

Loved your review 😊 Although being from Southern Ireland, I lover the Northern ones. But to answer your question, Southern Tayto was founded by a man called Murphy (Would you expect anything less?) 🤣 The company started producing in 1954, two years before the Northern company started.
When you get your hand on another Southern packet, try out one of our favourites here. The famous Tayto sandwich, I promise, you won't be dissapountd . Make sure you put a good load on the bread where it's about to burst at the seams

Ulster’s are unbeatable! Tayto in Ireland have a huge range of crisps whereas we do it simple and don’t go nuts on range. You should try the S&V and Prawn Cocktail flavours....unreal!
I think you're confused on your geography. Ulster is a province of Ireland and three of its counties are in the Republic.

The company is entirely separate from Tayto in the Republic of Ireland which has different product ranges; Tayto in the Republic of Ireland owns the name and mascot, and Tayto in Northern Ireland uses both under a licensing agreement. The Northern Irish Tayto is widely sold in both Northern Ireland and Great Britain, while the Republic of Ireland brand is sold in the Republic.

There were crisps in Ireland before Tayto, but they introduced flavoured crisps to the world.

The NI Tayto crisps in my opinion are superior. Much more flavour, more bold. Tayto cheese and onion, ballyrashane butter and nutty crust bread is the perfect match.

You need to get two slices of bread butter one slice . Spread a bit of mayo on other slice of bread , grate a bit of cheese and add nearly the full pack of either tayto to the sandwich cut in half . One of my hangover saviours 👌 try it !!! 👊🇮🇪

Vlog has made me hungry. I want them to sell more verity in England. We now have the yellow cheese and onion flavoured in home bargains but nothing else, They are really good. Also we need golden wonder back that Tayto have acquired as we can’t get many walkers flavours at the moment and people get bored of the same walkers crisps over and over.
I eat both regularly i am from Belfast but spend alof time in the republic in holiday home but the Norths crisps are so much better much better flavour

As an Irishmen in County Armagh. I would say that the Armagh tayto are better, not least as there are more flavours! Though they are both very very similar, probably made from the same spuds. Though I dare say that Both Tayto's are the best in the Celtic isles or maybe beyond!

Tayto in the Republic of Ireland were set up by Joe 'Spud' Murphy a couple of years earlier and have the fame of being the first ever flavoured crisp in the world. In the world! Unreal. Both are lovely and have their pros and cons and and living near the border I have ready access to both. I love Norn Iron Taytos too, they are light and full of flavour and are more intense cheese and onion, but for me, for the flavour of my youth, and for that extra special unique savoury stocky 'bovril' flavour as you put it, it has got to be Tayto Southern Ireland. Both still get sent in parcels to Irish emigrants around the world by their mammies. Some say King crisps are even better but sure you can't get them in big bags so no good! Walkers to me always seem 'cold and oily'.

The only difference between the northern and southern Tayto imo is that the northern Tayto has a slightly strongest taste. Must just more of the seasoning.

I love both, but northern Taytos are definitely more pronounced in taste and seem to be a tad better quality...including the rip-risk of bags, as you noticed. They are also spicier. If I'm eating a lot though - as you can easily do with both brands - I prefer the southern Taytos as they'll be less overwhelming. You're not going to taste much else for a long while after eating a bag of northern Taytos.
Free Stayto cheese and onion are better than the Ulster version. But for me, the NI Tayto has a better overall range. I think southern Tayto have 4 flavours. Their salt and vinegar, smoky bacon and prawn cocktail flavours are inferior to their northern counterparts. The NI Tayto have a wider range of tasty tasty options with beef and onion, spring onion, wuster sauce, ready salted and roast chicken.
One thing I don't like about the southern cheese flavour is that the smell stays on your fingertips for ages

Never realised there is a different tayto crisp up north. I had a pack of taytos in London before and they were different to the irish ones. It was also in a red pack though, but different to the pack from the republic.
The Nordie Smokey Bacon ones are off the fucking chain; while our ones are wrank AF. And the Beef & Onion Nordie Taytos are epic.

Haz They do have links... I’ve been to the Tayto Factory about 4 years ago. I asked them and they said they are the same but owned by different a people, not sure but have you heard of a franchise? Also it’s to do with The conflict between the two Areqs.

Plus my father in law looks after Brian Hutchison which is one of the owner of tayto which had a bad car accident years ago. My family are all from Tandragee so know the company of the back of my hand sorry to say

The name Tayto is licensed by the Northern Irish company . The Irish (now German owned) company pay royalties for the name.
No harm you could of marked the wannabe crisp from the Republic higher and we'd all known you'd be lying... Your face eating the Tayto made in Tandragee Castle said it all 😂.... Of course NI Tayto is better. The curry chips are really nice also and prawn cocktail... In fact all the flavours are 👌.

Free state Tayto all the way. Armagh Tayto crumbles into dust just by looking at them and they are also too oily for my liking. I prefer salt and vinegar though.

I prefer the NI version. I've had both the red packet from R.O.I. but for me not enough flavor. Having both familes from R.O.I & N.I. but it will always be the NI packet for me

I was always lead to believe that the ROI ones were just using the brand name licensing, and were manufactured by Walkers or another big crisp outfit. Turns out that it was a conspiracy theory, possibly started by Mr Tayto himself. Having eaten NI ones all my life, the ROI ones are a completely different, inferior crisp. NI Tayto do the best Prawn Cocktail known to man.
