- The M67 Flame Thrower Tank was a modification of the M48 to be burny instead of shooty. Three variants were made, the M67 and M67A2 for the Marines, and the Army's M67A1.

My dad was assigned to flames when he first arrived at 1st Tank Battalion at Camp Pendleton. Just a few months later, he got transferred to a gun tank as a driver and sent to Vietnam. If you ask him what he'd choose, given the option of Vietnam in a gun tank or staying stateside in flames, he'd pick Vietnam. Flames absolutely sucked for the crew. Hotter than hell and napalm is miserable to work with even if it's not burning.

Used tank salesman told them it is A1 with low milage, used on proving grounds only, and it never saw humid subtropical climate.
Only used by a little old lady on the gunnery training range on Sundays.

With enough bureaucracy you could sell wings for battleships and safety guards for barbed wire.
I don't know why he said that. The raised deck and engine grills are about cooling the engine and transmission. Even the large rear grill doors are part of the cooling system.
@@DK-ed7be if it was pure cooling, it would be vented from above as well, instead only the back is vented to prevent overhead IR spotting. however yes they do want a large engine compartment for any number of reasons.

Rode in the gas M48 for 2 weeks with our sister unit, 124th Panzer BN. Loud as hell, fast and they stink of gas. I was never so glad to get back to my M60A1. Oh yes, they fueled their tanks with 5 gal Jerry cans, that's loads of fun.
the flattened headlightguards appear only on M67 models converted from M48 A1. as this example is converted from M48 A2, it has the lightguards of an M48 A2.(or M48A3 type B- hull.)
I know Cheiftan is a larger version of normal human. Seeing him next to that generation of tank makes me realize how HUGE they were.
I could be wrong on this, but I believe this was a M48A1 hull upgraded to M48A2 standard, Some of the M48A1 hulls where upgraded to the A2 standard but retained the 5 road wheels.
the rangefinder ought to have just been a 2 position gage saying "Too Far" and "Close Enough"

If you see those fender mounted air cleaner boxes, it's a diesel.
Same with the back deck. Raised back deck, diesel. Flat back deck, it's a gasser.

OMG! the tank sets you on fire!🔥
The PTO was used on the original dozer blade system. It was a bulky system of plumbing from the rear over a fender to the front. The two small ports on either side are used to access the CD850 transmission's band adjusters, also found on M60 hulls. If you bumped the transmission when reinstalling the pack, you could release the bands and the tank wouldn't move, steer or have braking. The bands are also important for the parking brake. When you walked along the side you forgot to mention the air filter for the engine is sandwiched between the sponson boxes. The AVI's and upgraded turbo charged versions had 4 magnetos that had to be timed. Each Mag ran 6 spark plugs, each cylinder had two massive spark plugs. Timing required a special timing light and two popsicle sticks.

honestly. as a kid growing up researching tanks, aircraft, ships, watching documentary ect. and being a tanker in the us army...I never once...had any inclination that an M67 ever existed. thanks for the video
Interesting video. I spent a lot of time in M 48 A5 at the NTC. Fun tank. Like a sports car. Only bigger. One of the idiosyncrasies of the M48 with the gasoline engine is they caught fire. A lot. My time in M48s overlapped with some "old timers" who worked with the early marks. They said it was not unusual at all to have them backfire through the carb on a cold morning and burn to the ground. They said it was so common that they changed their starting procedure to have a crew member standing on the back deck with the doors open and a big fire extinguisher. The fuel injection upgrade helped to reduce engine fires which if they did nothing else, was a big improvement.

Posted on your FaceBook page, a photo I took of a Marine M67 in Vietnam. We were clearing bunkers that appeared to be abandoned. We were using C4 to collapse them. The M67 was attached to our unit and they asked to participate. No enemy in sight, hence the photo op. During my time, we never used one for an active engagement. Thanks for your insight. (In a different life, served with 1st Sqdrn, 11th ACR (Fulda).

Everytime i see this tank. It reminds me of the movie Patton. The Germans used this tanks in the movie. While the U.S used the M41 Walker Bulldogs. Both vietnam era tanks.

Please do a video on the M88 a1 a2. I served from 95 to 2012 and I was always assigned an M88a1 as my recovery vehicle with an occasional M113 or 1114 Hummv as a secondary assignment. Overall I spent the vast majority of my career operating and basically living in the M88's. You do a great deal of videos on tanks and different variants. But I bet a great deal of people would like to see the the M88s and get a look inside them. I drove the living hell out of the M88a1 I had during my 2nd tour in Iraq. So much so that I had to replace the track 2 times due to wear and tear on the pads. I was a damn busy dude for 8 months. But my M88 ran like a dream and never let me down. Treat them right and they will treat you right.
So with flame tanks is it a case of, "Oh bugger, everything except the tank is on fire." or is it more of, "Oh bugger, everything is on fire."?

WOWIE! A max range of 70 miles is so small for a "main" battle tank. It's no wonder they vastly increased the range with newer engine updates throughout the years.

@@c3aloha Nothing's worse than apricots. When you first entered 1st Tanks chow hall there was a sign that read, "This mess facility proudly does not serve any apricot products." That sign was there for a reason.
In the Gulf we worked with some Brits for a while, Scots Dragoons if I remember correctly. We swapped rats. They loved MREs because it was an individual meal that you could throw away when you were finished with it. They didn't have that. What they had was a big box of canned goods that was supposed to be 10 meals. We loved them because there was canned food instead of the dried crap that we were getting.
Anyhow, I was going through this box when I came across a can of apricots. I carefully lifted this abomination out of the box like it was nitro-glycerine and handed it to my loader. "Get the fuck rid of this."
Now my loader was a boot, fresh from tank school before the balloon went up. He didn't know any better. He takes the can from me, but instead of carrying it way out into the desert, he thought it'd be funny if he set it on our platoon sergeant's tank. The gunny sees this can sitting on his fender and goes to pick it up, "What the fuck is -- HOLY SHIT!!!" and chucks it like a live grenade.
My loader had a chuckle until I told him that nobody better find out what he did. Nobody.
A couple of weeks later, the mechanics are doing oil changes at the company CP. It was the gunny's turn, so his tank is sitting there, right next to the company command and support elements, when an electrical short starts a turret fire. We're fully combat loaded with 63 rounds of maingun, hundreds of rounds of .50, and thousands of coax. Everybody dives for cover except one mechanic that grabbed a hand-held fire bottle and jumps in the turret.
Don't know how many lives he saved that day. Didn't get anything more than a pat on the back for it. Our captain was... well, let's say he was acting consistent with his demonstrated character.
Now, I'm not a superstitious man. I've got no use for supernatural mumbo jumbo. But that was the tank that came in contact with apricots. Haven't touched them since.
I thought apricots was an Amtraker thing.

Power Takeoff Point: could it be for running booster pumps on a fuel trailer? A fuel trailer is not an uncommon accessory for flame tanks.
Makes sense - but IDK if an extra pump was even necessary. IMHO, the power take off was on all tanks this hull type. IDK how many flame tanks were made, but casting an extra hull without it makes no sense. Therefore, if you don't need it - just keep the plate on. The other way around, needing one and not having it would be a pain in the butt, since drilling ~0.5 inches/12.5mm of super-hard cast tank steel in the field is no fun at all.

@@Yaivenov Thank you. Even if you only tow a standard cargo trailer offroad, you might need something as simple as an interior light to find stuff. Remember, there where no hi-power led flashlights available back then.

Hey, they always were going on about wepons for tankers if they had to bail due to battle damage. So the factory kindly built in a cavalry saber disguised as a dip stick (since you know - armored cavalry). And it has infinite ammo so you can keep cutting down the enemy untill you get tired. When you get tired hand the saber to the next guy and let him swing it around for a bit.

That's awesome and it's a widely unknown tank, bit I wanna see the M103 next too it! I know you did a set of videos on an M103 a long time ago, but it's rough around the edges and hard too follow. I think that mighty beast needs a redo!
But . . . track tensioning! How do you tension the track?
There are some boys in the UK that have 2 Chieftains, they also have a RUclips channel called "Fitter Mat". If I were you I would check them out, they have the tanks on their farm, they have several other types of military vehicles. If they are willing, you might get to make a video using a tank instead of it locked inside a museum.

All M60s and probably almost all M48s had the external phone. So one can't simply note that feature and glean that the tank is thus an infantry support vehicle.
He said it the other way around. It is for infantry support, thus a phone. Important difference.
@@biscuit715 I don't care how he said it, the implication was the phone was there because that particular model of tank was for infantry support. Actually the phone is there because ALL M48s and M60s had external phones. In fact all US tanks since WW2 until the M1 came along had external phones for communicating with grunts. Moreover, even the M48 and M60 AVLBs had external phones as did the M728 engineer vehicle.

Are you sure its PTO? Just thinking with the WWII flame thrower tanks they normally towed a trailer with more fuel for the flame thrower and that spot would be ideal for the hose to come into the tank? And secondly I can't think of any trailer that a tank would pull that would use a PTO. Humm time to start researching lol. Maybe power connection? Oh hell tell them to open it up and let you peek inside for what it is 🤣

@@jarink1 Possible makes more sense (no offense Chieftain) than a PTO. Especially if they had Korea in mind for winters. I would assume the access cover was bolted closed for long term storage? 🤷♂️

Drain holes for unburnt fuel ? That's really scary if that fuel drips over the hull.
As the Chieftain pointed out many times with the Russian fuel tanks, fuel burning on several inches of steel or on the ground is nothing to get concerned about.

General Steel Castings, originally Eddystone PA, later Granite City IL. Formed by several steam locomotive builders to cast entire locomotive frames, including the cylinders, in one piece. You will see that raised G shield on a very high percentage of US tanks, going back to WW-II, as well as a lot of later steam locomotive frames. See the wiki for "General Steel Industries", it shows the logo.
Why are flame tanks not used anymore?
A tank with not one but two dipsticks. The second identified the tank incorrectly when it was taken into the collection.

Padumbliai in Lithuania might be Putin's first target.
Russian might have troops in Belarus for the following reason.
1. Kalingrad is a very important Baltic Sea port for Russia.
2. Kalingrad is cut off from Belarus and that rest of Russia.
3. Kalingrad is also pancaked to the North by Lithuania and Poland to the South, both NATO countries.
4. Putin might mean to secure Vilinius and Kaunas.
The benefits of securing Vilinius and Kaunas would be numerous.
1. Russia would be able to bring in supplies and air support to Vilinius at Kalingrad. The E26 and A16 would become a major road way for supplies being sent to Vilinius and then into Belarus.
2. The Neman River runs the entire length of Northern Kalingard around Kaunas and into Belarus creating a natural defensive structure from the Batlic to the interiors of Belarus.
The Neman is 16 feet at its deepest and 1,600 feet at its widest. NATO would be hard pressed to cross the Neman even at it's most shallow and smallest width as Kalingrad + Russian and Belarusian forces would heavily guard the Neman in Kalingrad.
Vistula Lagoon and Kurischese Haff be heavily mined to keep NATO troop ships from conducting a Normandy style invasion along the western coast of Kaligrad.
Baltyisk would become the first target for NATO to attack in order to secure landing locations on the lagoons isle to the south which would be heavily defended with shore batteries comprised of missiles and long range artillery.
NATO would have to take the 167 coming in from Nida and taking the port city of Zelenogradsk which would see missile batteries from the mainland along with Russian attack fighters attacking the isle from the northeastern coastline of Kalingrad. NATO would also expect to see a lot of resistance while taking the isle with troops missile strikes from NATO ships in the Baltic as well as airstrikes.
Russia would also most likely launch small missile gunboats from ports along the Neman from ports in Kalingrad that would be used to defend invasion from NATO in Lithuania as well as sending such craft into the Haff to help repel NATO forces from taking the 167.
Russia could push up the 167 to the Lithuania port city of Klaipeda to cut off NATO resupply of Lithuania. With Klaipeda falling to Russia, the AI to Kaunas would be open to further send troops and vehicles to Kaunas by Russia from the port of St. Petersburg.
Taking the E77 from the AI, Russian forces being brought in along the Neman would be able to cut the Klaipeda finger to Kaunas in half. Anti-missile and anti-plane missile batteries would be positioned in the finger to keep NATO from pressing on Kaunas while Russia pushed west, towards the Baltic with reinforcements coming from Kaunas and Belarus.
Russia would also have to take the Polish city of Dubowo to Zerzidny to secure the pocket so that NATO would be cut off from Belarus via the Makowszczyzna Pocket.
The Makowszczyzna Pocket in Poland could Russia's primary target. If the Makowszczyzna Pocket is indeed the target and does fall to an invasion, Russia would have two major roads leading from Belarus into Kalingrad, the 134 and 653.
Padumbliai in Lithuania would need to be taken and after the city fell, would become a major citadel for Russia, Belarusian and other forces supporting Russia to headquarters in due to the lakes and forest making the taking of the city almost impossible.
Padumbliai might be the Russian's offensive starting point to create transport routes between Kalingrad and Belarus that would be protected by Russian SAM and man portable SAM launchers.

“Chieftain” is my “nom de plume”. It means Celtic Leader as well as being a tank name.

The entire series is named “inside the chieftain’s hatch”. Once you realise that Chieftain is a person, not a name, it makes a lot more sense. The specific vehicle is always named after, in this case, M67

Dip stick on the left side is for the transmission. Engine is located on the right side farther up. Also the tool boxes are called " sponsin boxes".

I'm rather surprised that you remarked on the air filter boxes on the fenders near the turret - purely the hallmark of a diesel engine on the M48/60 series (Continental AVDS-1790). Nick you're better than that!
