How to convert a 62 amp power supply for rc use. Dell Poweredge 2950

- One of my purpose built power supplies that I paid over $100 for took a crap. I decided to make two of my own for 1/4 the cost of one.
Dell poweredge 2950 server power supplies can be readily had on ebay.
A useful addition to anyone's RC/electronics workbench but care must be taken as these supplies can be dangerous. I did the same to two HP 1200 Watt (100 Amp) power supplies about two years ago and they now provide DC source current for my iCharger 4010 DUO charger which I use to charge everything from from low-power NiMH receiver packs to my 36V 6A LiPo electric bicycle battery pack. The bike pack requires that the charger work off of 24 volts, though, so for that I use two HP supplies in series. I know this was not covered in your video, but just in case anyone is interested in going this route there is a very important additional step they must perform. They must isolate the two supplies' DC grounds from their AC grounds. Both are usually tied together at the case at one or more of the circuit boards' mounting screws. Use nylon screws and washers at these locations and when done make sure there's an open circuit between the case and the DC outputs and you'll be fine. You'll get massive sparks and destroy your supplies if you ignore this step!
Great idea to use a meter to check if the supply is grounded. I used cardboard and steel screws and the meter showed that it was still grounded so I used thick plastic to make some washers and it worked with steel screws.
Actually only the second in row pw supply case (to which DC negative you connect the positive DC from first pw supply) should be isolated from ground (otherwise you are doing a short circuit).
I watch your videos to gain some technical knowledge and problem solving abilities. It would be very helpful if you talked more about WHY you do what you do, so that people can learn what you're looking for/ trying to accomplish. thanks for the great videos!
And learn how to solder without bridging pins... Why on earth would you heat shrink the steel power supply case?
i didnt have to open the psu. i used dupont connectors to jump the A1 and B6 to ground externally and power it on.
Increasing the output voltage to 13.5V, I believe that the DELL 7001080-Y100 54.4A model could only be via PC, because there is no trimpot internally, but there is a connector on the rear of 6 pins that could be the communication link.
Btw you dont have to dismount it all, just wire it together from the outer side.
CONNECT D2 TO A6 AND YOU WILL HAVE 12.55 VOLTS. ALSO MAKE A FAN GUARD. UNLESS YOU SOLDER ALL THOSE PLUS AND NEGATIVE TABS TOGETHER YOU WILL NEVER GET YOUR FULL 62 AMPS.
i did similar to this with the same psu and I get 12.24, I cant see it charging my battery
@@richardrhule6774 you have to connect D2 to D6 to get 12.55. Leave all your connections and do this too it will jump up to 12.55 from 12.24

@@richardrhule6774 no it will only charge to 12.55 which is what a fully charged FLA or SLA is. What kind of battery is the one you are charging and what is the fully charged voltage?
About to make one of these, i presume the 3x12v main output pins are actually say 20A each and to get full 60a i should connect all 3 mains together and all 3 grounds together?

Amazing, this totally worked. Now I can finally power my cordless drill without batteries! I'd love to know how you figured this out. Do you which is PS_Kill and which is PS_On and what's the third pin do, is it signal ground?
@@AlidorAuxier No idea. I just had like 4 of em and started shorting pins based on other models. Figured I'd get lucky. I had 4 chances to get it right. Turns out, they have amazing protection and you can short pretty much any pin to anything else and it won't go boom. No idea which pins are which.
I have a couple dell N870P's wired in series for 24V/72A PSU, there's a guy that does it and did it pretty quick. However, the fans in the things sound like two demented hair dryers when there is no load. So when I'm discharging packs, the fans run WOT the entire time and it's annoying as all get out. When there's a 1.5A or so load, the fans drop to almost inaudible levels. Is there a way to throttle the fans when there's no load? My chargers are in my office, so sitting here in the same room with them after a bash session is quite annoying. Even if I could wire in a potentiometer or a switch to disable the fans when there's no load... something to kill them when there isn't a load.

RC FlyBoy I don't think so. I can tell you I've never had one fail, even on the hottest days while parallel charging multiple batteries on both channels of my charger set to 20A.
The fan will speed up if you approach the maximum current. If you need more current make another power supply and connect the CS connections. On both together. CS is current share

You should make a video on using the 80A Artesyn power supply that's on eBay for $10.
I know it's four years, but I think the PSU you are talking about is 80W input power rather than 80A output. This thing is 750W output 62.4A 12V output.

i did the same thing with your power supply, the question is can I use it to charge 12v 100ah deep cycle battery?
Late reply but 12.3v is too low to charge 12v lead acid. You would have to increase the voltage somehow to around 13.8v otherwise the battery would not accept charge. It can be done but you would have to modify two things - the over-volt protect would need to be reset to over 14v and the voltage control feedback loop would need modifying to provide the 13.8v output. I can provide details if needed. But you will need a circuit diagram for the PSU that you have, (or be comfortable reverse engineering.) Keep those irons hot! Chris, UK.

I have a problem with my Dell PSU 7000880 .......
It starts well but after a short time it stops and the yellow light comes on. What does the yellow led mean? There's a solution?
The power supplies you buy off eBay are used power supplies and could have a problem with them.
They are swapped out for one of two reasons. It is getting close to their time, or they have malfunctioned.
It could be an overheating issue even though the fan is running.

Do some quick Google searches. I'm sure there is somebody out there that has done a conversion.
Have a look at this video and it will help you understand what connections you are looking for. I know it's not a flat one but should help you with your measurements...? Once you have the idea, you should be able to tackle any of them, i think. I know what you mean though because i completely screwed my first one up! That was almost four years ago and to be honest I really don't remember.
I think I did a Google search for the model number of the power supply and used the word "pinout".

@@crispyspa A thinner tip on the solder bolt and some other hand tools had done well. Otherwise the method is fine. But when you go online, it's fine to be a little careful about this.
