Hi Oli, I just recently got a 1986 Cabby that runs shabby! The spark plugs are Bosch model number R1 282. The tips look not too bad but the engine doesn't idle properly, you can just hear that something is off. After watching your video, I'm not thrilled that the model number has the 'R'. So, I wanted to order new ones but the local NAPA system kept suggesting other models that also had the 'R' in the model number. I found and bought some Champion 300 that don't have the 'R', they were the only non-resistor plugs that I could get quickly and cheaply. So, thanks for your help. Edit - At first it didn't seem any better but after taking it out for a good, solid ride, it runs much stronger, idles great and I'm very happy with the sound at idle and response of the throttle - ONLY WHEN IT HAS WARMED UP THOUGH. UPON COLD STARTUP: It still has a cold start issues, idles irregularly and boggs down when given some gas. Will look at idle speed booster valve and hoses next.
Firstly, good to hear the plugs helped! Secondly, I wish I knew more about cis. I bet your mixture needs adjusted for when it is in open loop (cold car before the o2 sensor warmed up).

super awesome to see mk1 repairs done. sometimes the manual isn't too descriptive haha. been having trouble with my ignition switch not activating the solenoid so hopefully I can troubleshoot it, or if you have a video planned to troubleshoot that'd be great

@@OlisGarage im suspecting it's the ignition switch since the starter solenoid still works if i jump it directly to the battery. i'm gonna try to work on it tomorrow and see if it works out!
@@OlisGarage luckily, someone never bothered to put the kneebar back when i bought it.. so it's gone haha. But the car FINALLY starts! Ignition switch was cracked on the inside and now I've just gotta do full maintenance and it'll be on the road haha
sudoyashi good to hear you fixed it! A tune up and fluid flush should do it wonders! FYI, the knee board was actually an added structural support. So eventually I would acquire on and install it.
Just bought a 1990 Cabriolet and this channel is so awesome and done well. I just subscribed! I do have a question for you. Have you ever ran into a problem where the fuel pump fuse keeps blowing? I have checked for a short and can not seem to find one. I am fixing on changing the fuel pump and filter to see if that is the problem. Just thought I would see if you have ran into this issue. Thank you! Good question. I personally have not run into that issue yet. I would always check the easy things first. Make sure that the fuse is the correct one, replace the filter, and then if need be replace the pump. Make sure they are grounded properly as well (I can't remember off the top of my head where the ground for them is...)
Thanks, at least now I'm sure that those tops for the sparkplugs need to be removed 😅 all of my vacuumlines have been unplugged. I have the same engine as yours, do you have a clip about that? Kind seem to find proper information about it...

Doing this replacement on our 93 cabriolet - spark plugs recommended by auto stores are NGK 7131 or 7084. I picked up the 7131 but unsure why you strictly recommend 1263. Stores say 1263 doesn’t fit the vehicle…let me know, thanks!
Never heard of 1263. The going wisdom for these vehicles is NGK BP6ET or BP6ES. That’s been fairly well established on the forums. Other plugs may work well too. But I don’t mess around. Cabby-info has a good discussion about spark plugs. Basically the original Bosch recommended ones don’t exist anymore. Ngk are the next best thing.

With one stop got the plugs and fuel filter swapped out - purring like new again. It's because of your education and videos that got us back on the road. I just replaced the fuel filter and the accumulater. But now the car won’t keep running. I also drained the tank and put in 10 litres of fresh fuel. It’s definitely a fuel problem cause it will run on brake cleaner. Also, my fuel pump doesn’t prime with just ignition turned on.
If you know the fuel pump doesn’t prime, is look into that issue. A lot of people run a horn relay JUST FOR TESTING purposes because it keeps the fuel pumps running when the ignition switch is on. Search the problem a bit and you’ll find quite a few vwvortex threads that talk about diagnosing those issues.

rob p depends what you’re doing. If you’re working with electric components or fuel, always disconnect. I disconnect it in this video at the 10 minute mark
Question - I purchased the same oil you have in this video online that was included in a oil change kit. After changing the oil to this dark stuff, my tailpipe started blowing consistent white smoke after heating up and blowing away the water vapor. Car still has 100% coolant and never overheated before - I don’t believe there is a head gasket issue either after the extensive diagnosis I did with my brother, to get a second opinion. If you have a second; let me know if you experienced a similar issue after using this stuff. I have a 1992 cabriolet 1.8 8v 5speed You are the man, just did the vacuum egg carton delete in one of your previous videos. Keep up the awesome content!!
Hmm that is strange.. I’m trying to think if anything that it could be and noting is coming to mind. It wouldn’t make sense that changing the oil causes that to happen.. unless if somehow oil is being burned which is a different issue. No idea if this oil burns more white. I had no issues on my vehicle. Part of me thinks just keep driving…but then again I would want to figure the issue out. If you really think it’s the oil, maybe buy some other oil, drain this out (save it) and then fill up with your new oil. If the issue goes away, throw out the slightly used oil that you saved. If the issue doesn’t go away, save the oil for the next oil change and hunt down the issue.

You have to measure the resistance between the terminals and then move the flap and see if the resistance changes. It’s described in the Bentley manual. Hard to just describe over text; a picture is worth 1000 words I guess haha
That is strange. Since you changed your tank, I would presume it to be a fuel issue. Are you sure the fuel lines are all properly connected? Have you checked if the car is getting fuel?
Justin Montoy that is strange. Break it down to the basics of spark, fuel, and air. Double check fuel because that’s what you touched last. Check timing and spark (shouldn’t be off, but you never know).
@@OlisGarage we think we figured it out, we put some starter spray in the carburetor and it started for a second, we read that a lot of people have trouble starting after changing the gas tank and it's because the fuel pump isnt used to the pressure outside of the gas tank which causes it to short out and pump less
Should be very similar. Only difference would be fuel filter. I’ve never touched a carbureted mk1 though...in the USA they almost all were fuel injected.

Mark Collins nothing in the tutorial should result in that sound.... Does the car have oil pressure? I.e. is the oil light blinking like crazy when it’s running? Did you take a picture before you took the plug wires off so that you can verify that you installed them correctly?
@@OlisGarage it's probably unrelated as a tune up should not result in an engine noise, yes. it was just a question, sorry. oil light has not come on, and yes, i wrote on the wires before removing. it's an old engine so it's expected i guess.
Mark Collins just wanted to make sure we were on the same page. If you have oil pressure, then I’m not concerned with leaving it running. There’s a chance you got two plug wires crossed. Start it and pull one plug wire at a time. If it runs worse, then that wire is connected correctly. If it runs the same, then that wire is probably wrong and swapped with another.

sudoyashi ignition switches are pretty common to break on these cars. Shouldn’t be too bad, you just have to remove the knee board which is a PAIN.

I changed my spark plugs and spark plug wires but not the distributor cap or rotor and now having a starting problem. Any tips?
What plugs did you use?
Are you 10000% certain that the wires are in the same place on the distributor as before?

@@OlisGarage ok, so I got it sorted out. it seems it was a sticky lifter, i changed the oil and it cleaned it self out.
