Snorkel Biscayne Bay - 3 People Died - I Went To Hospital

  • The water in Florida has been contaminated more and more for decades. It has now gotten to the point where even relatively remote areas where I had gone to see cleaner water and the beautiful diversity of life around coral and mangroves are severely effected.
It is so bad that people have been dying from swimming in the water for several years. They tell us its not so bad. Many swim and only a few have died. Thats literally the argument they use here.
So I was in two hospitals in a week. Three other people died the same week from swimming near where I had been swimming.
Florida used to have crystal clear water. There were fish and coral everywhere. You never hesitated to eat fish, lobsters or even oysters caught here. But its not that way anymore.

Dade County pumps partially treated sewage underground. It is cheaper than providing tertiary treatment so it could be legally pumped offshore. Apparently the County believes they can pump sewage below a certain level underground so it can not ever come back up and destroy our aquifier where we get our drinking water. This is where some of the pollution may be coming from.

You are probably right. I adopted a feral cat a few years back and thought he might not know what water is because he never drank water I left out for him. I gave him canned food so he could absorb the moisture in it. During the hurricane, we had bottled water and he drank a lot of it. He stopped drinking water after we went back to tap water. I realized he knew what water is, but was rejecting the tap water. We both drink bottled water, or reverse osmosis water when we can get it.

First of all I’m very thankful you’re friend helped you to get to the ER. I’ve read articles on Fox regarding the deaths around Miami from the bacteria in the water. Scary stuff.
I liked this video. Very informative and you’ve got proof it’s rapidly happening. Great job. Please make more videos where we see you talking about your travels and repairs. It’s a great addition. Hats off to you Ma’am. You are truly a remarkable young lady. I’m amazed at your building skills and working with boats. We’d all like to hear how you got involved with sailing and Yachting.
Looking forward to the Bahamas !

Thanks! I will have some more videos of continuing work on the boat soon. I will be replacing the large air conditioner with a smaller one that I can run from the generator and possibly even with solar if I can fit enough new panels on the boat.

Yes, its pretty much over for diving in the United States. If I go back in the water, its going to be someplace that gets even more flushing to the ocean or the Bahamas.

They need to warn more tourists about how the area is full of aligator crocodile cause lot of people dont know
They also need to start hunting them down. Florida is very touristic place people go for the beach life. You cant act as if alaska or montana out there. And act as if we have to cohabit with crocodile and alligators. Thats just not compatible with florida beach life

I have always imagined my chronic illnesses were a result of swimming in those mangroves by Elliot and Boca Chita. In the early 90's I was constantly over there snorkeling in the mangroves and grass beds. I got pretty sick and it became chronic. I believe I picked something up and it has been a hard life ever since. The description of my illness would be too much to describe. It was more of internal inflammation type thing. What the doctors find is really just an element or symptom rather than a cause. I did not have any sores on my skin. I do recall little rashes. Today I still have rashes. I would tend to believe it is more of a Tropical Illness type thing rather than pollution.

The toxic summer of 2018 and the year generally speaking was devastating. You are correct about everything is this video and then it has been ongoing for quite sometime. 2018 was the first time red tide was observed in BNP in our modern times. I think the lack of fish could be driven by water temperature, tide, season, or moon phase though. Everything you said about the coral, water quality, general habitat loss, and lake O and the EAA is spot on.
Because I swim in this water often I have a couple questions for you:
    1) Which hospital(s) did you go to get treated for the vibrio? I feel this is important information to have. Both here and in Vero Beach.
    2) Would you swim at or around the Elliot key area again? Or do you consider it too risky due to age, pollution, infection, or other factors?

I seem to have recovered, but the plan is to spend next summer in the Bahamas. I can't stop them from polluting the water, but I can go somewhere else where there is cleaner water.

We can hope. Its been a growing problem for decades, but huge algae blooms in the past couple of years have covered beaches with dead fish which tourists don't like to see, so maybe something will be done. Apparently big agriculture spends more money to lobby (bribe) our political leaders, so thats been where their priorities are. We need laws to keep money from influencing political decisions, but its hard to get those kind of laws passed because the law makers are the ones who benefit from the way things have been.

This Vlog would have proof to our government and do something about it. We The People need to get together to help improve our air and water environment quality since we already destroy our world with pollution. We have to pray hard to make this happen by people power to change. God bless us.

What a shame, way too many nutrients in the water. That purple stuff might be some type of cyanobacteria. I haven't been to the keys since 2013 but it's my favorite place to go for sure. Glad you made a full recovery.

The kneejerk response is always oh its global warming but this is not crediblt over a period of two years, these environments are very sensitive try keeping marine tropical fish in a tank. My view is that it is simply pollution from farm runoff and or sewage too much nitrogen. There could also be a compounding effect of other pollutants. Sad.

    • @ninehundreddollarluxuryyac5958
      @ninehundreddollarluxuryyac5958  4 года назад +2

You're right. This was caused mainly by agricultural runoff, and to some extent septic tanks and cracked sewer pipes. There were huge fish kills most years. Apparently all the fish I saw in 2017 were some of the ones seen dead all over the beaches last year. Everyone just forgets about it and assumes the fish grow back or some move from unaffected areas. Last years fish kill covered the entire atlantic and gulf coasts of Florida, so no, the fish did not come back. There seem like there might be enough to repopulate if there is no fishing and no more dumping of contaminated water from the center of the state. Several years ago, water management said they would stop dumping the contaminated water, but every year when water levels get too high at the corporate farms, they release more contaminated water "as an emergency measure" and cause the next years algae bloom.
