You guys make an incredible team for yachting. I notice Edd is always prepared and as careful as he can reasonably be. Running aground is something that just happens to the best of boaters from time to time. As much as it's a PIA, it will happen from time to time to the best of us. At least you know enough to run at a cautious speed when in unfamiliar waters. Mark of a good captain. And Lynn is always ready ahead of time with her lines and fenders. I hope she realizes how much pressure that takes off of Edd. She would make a great hand on any boat she sails on I'm sure. Another thing I noticed is she is not afraid to get involved when you are doing mechanical projects. Noticing the lifting handle as something out of place was a good effort. May not have been the problem she thought it was, but she was willing to offer help that could have been something to prevent a possible problem. That kind of thing is exactly what a good team does to support each other. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Sometimes educational, other times funny, but always enjoyable. Fate did a great job of pairing you up in life! You compliment each other very well indeed!

Uh oh, you are going to give Lyn a big head. I might have to hide this post! 😁We are very lucky. Me especially. I can't imagine how much more difficult this would be without a partner who is also committed to the boating life. Thanks for watching. We are hoping to get a lot more videos out over the coming weeks, whether we are stuck in the marina or not.

Couple of tips. On your snubber, terminating each working end to the bridle will save your snubber line from chafing and be quieter. I also recommend letting out additional chain (to the bottom). Doing so adds weight to your rode and decreases the angle from your anchor to bow, thus increasing holding. Fair winds friends! Hope we can share an anchorage soon!

    • @tryingnottosink9107
      @tryingnottosink9107  5 лет назад +2

Thanks for the tips. Anchoring is something we are trying to get better at. In our upcoming video in Baltimore our anchor slipped, caught on a small log, and our boat went racing across the anchorage with zero hold. We were lucky that we did not hit anything.

I really appreciate your candor on this. I think if it was me I wouldn't tell anyone. But because you do, I learn so much from you. I hope to get a boat one day, and I'm watching your channel constantly. Like others have said, don't beat yourself up. Look at it this way - I myself can only DREAM of running aground!

Don’t beat yourself up too much. Every single on of us who are actually out there trying to do this have been aground. It’s just part of boating East coast US. If you are heading up the east coast icw you need to sort the towing services because shoal water is everywhere along the ICW, especially in areas that Florence may have “modified”. Thanks for your candid video.

I've been enjoying your videos of your adventures. When I saw those dark spots at the beginning, I was thinking, "oh boy. That looks like the bottom". But you went for a swim and all was good there. You seem to be a competent mariner and being familiar with your boat's systems is invaluable skills when there is a problem. When you ran aground and got stuck, or your anchor got tangled with the sailboat or you engine got fuel starved and stopped, I felt the knot in the pit of my stomach relating to how I would feel if these things had happened to me. My vessel is much smaller. I operate it mostly on Long Island and NYC waters. I've had all those things happen, proving you don't have to venture far for a problem. As much as I love the boat and cruising it, I often think of what problem is lurking behind every turn of the prop. That often convinces me to have a nice day at the marina. I admire and respect your nerve, tenacity, sense of adventure and positive attitude through it all.

My father and I not one but twice drifted on to the same old wreck in Lake Michigan. Thankfully we had a powerful tender and the assistance of a local on a jet ski. we also twice got our anchor chain tangled in two different older larger abandoned anchors. moral of the story, it happens, always remain calm and don't make things worse.

Regarding the depth readings, I was thinking that the reported values from your depth gauges are measures from the location of your sending unit. If you draw 3feet, then add 3 to the recorded value. Then the chart depths are approx correct. But then you said there are multiple depth gauges and I'm assuming at least one is nearly surface mounted, as opposed to all at the bottom of the hull. If so, then my "location" theory doesn't fit. On my boat, I have found a correlation and when I add a couple feet it matches the chart readings.
Wow, what an experience with SeaTow. I was wondering why you didn't call BoatUS. I think the unlimited towing coverage from them if about $80 per year. Well worth it.
Good luck with the haul out. Enjoying your videos. Thanks for sharing.

    • @tryingnottosink9107

I have two transducers. Both are installed 2 foot from the bottom of the boat. So I know when they get close to reading 2 feet I am in trouble. My draft is 4.5 feet. So I just take 2.5 feet off the depth reading to get the actual depth from the surface.
We are happy you enjoy the videos!

Though I am happy you are both safe I am disappointed in you captain for not setting your anchor Alarm I know you were distracted but the worst thing to do is going to sleep with your anchor out and forgetting to set your alarm costly mistake. I’ve had the same problem with my boat with the anchor dragging on the bottom of the ocean floor what I did was I bought an oversized anchor which rectified the problem. you might want to consider that option since you do anchor on a regular basis. I enjoyed your video and hope you stay safe.
    Back in 1982 I had a 32 foot sea-ray Sun-dancer
I lived on the water with my cousin in a house the boat was always in my backyard. One Friday night we decided to go to fire Island New York up on Long Island we left the house at 10 PM halfway to fire Island the fog got so thick we could not find our way we only had a depth finder no radar - after an hour of following a party boat by sounds of the music we were unable to find land. So what I did was in 20 feet of water I dropped anchor and put 40 feet of Anchorline out and we both went to the cabin and fell asleep by 6 o’clock in the morning we woke up to the sound of cars over our heads after coming out of the cabin I realize that the anchor was dragging on the bottom and we were underneath the fire Island Bridge in between two concrete pillars. I’ll never forget how petrified I was knowing that with my cousin and I sleeping if we did hit a concrete pillar it would’ve been very serious and we could have drowned in our sleep after that scary night I went and bought an oversized anchor and never had that problem again that night will always be etched in my head forever I was petrified that we could just sank while we were sleeping.
    Safe journeys
    Don

Thank you for the story. This was the first time we ever drifted. And we have anchored in very strong currents. The night before, we were anchored in very strong currents and waves and had no issues. I guess I got complacent and believed that past experience would dictate future experience. In any case, I definitely would have set the alarm after the phone call. Next time I will let the phone ring!

We got towed about twenty miles one day by Towboat US. The invoice was for $1250. All covered by our Towboat US policy. All I had to do was give the towboat guy my name and policy number. The amazing thing was, that when we got to our slip, I told him he could put us in bow first if he wanted to, to make it easier, and he asked how I normally put it in and I said stern first. He greased that thing in better than I do when I back it in under twin props.

It seems like everytime a major storm/hurricane comes thru it pushes all the sand around and I don't see how you can avoid never running aground at some point. Sure, you might be in deep water one minute, but you suddenly come up on a bar thats 5 feet higher you ain't going to be able to stop on a dime. I wouldn't feel too bad about this one, sometimes anchors don't bite everytime, and at least you only drifted very slowly aground, and not underway at 9+ knots. I can't imagine the boat was moving very fast in calm water like that while dragging an anchor. All's well that ends well I say :)

Only if it is setup correctly! A vast majority of boats have their depth setup incorrectly, or more importantly, the owner doesn't really know how it is setup.
I always set mine to real depth, so no one is ever confused. Everyone should always know their draft, so the math is easy.
I know lots of sailboat owners who set their depth at bottom of keel, keel offset, so they can just look at the screen and see how much room they have under the boat.
Personally, either system works fine, as long as you know how your depth is measured. I just prefer the real measurement.

NOoo......! It made you a BETTER CAPTAIN.
NOAA PRINTS Sea Charts, they ARE VERY DETAILED. Depth soundings, rocks, always have them, your Richie Compess ( have you adjusted it for magnetic alinement ie. Balls underneath it).
Is a GREAT ONE. I dead recon, its a hobby. Fun. The more you do it the better you get.
I make a RPM TO DISTANCE CHART.
EACH RPM I TRAVEL 3 NAU MILES ÷ 3 I ADJUST the RPM so I end up with a convenient time.
5 min incrementa is convenient. Its fast.
    No 7.5 or 13 mins .
idling, 1500, trolling, nonplaining heavy seaway, planing, "to fast" LOL..
    EXAMPLE
    LOS ANGELES
22 nd st. Pea soup fog 4am
I plotted tie up to entrance of LA Harbor breakwater. Compose point / time ; new heading / time ; new heading / time. @ Rpm.
    I had it written down.
I used this, every single time I left the harbor.
50 times in the bright clear blue sky...... And 6 or 7 times when it counted.
Use a watch with a bezel you can set.
At the breakwater I have a course / NOAA CHART.
WHEN we would fish, record the time, = distance.
What worked great was i made a turn AND KEPT IT ON THAT TURN UNTIL THE COMPOSE HEADING CAME BACK AROUND. this is how we searched for fish in the fog.. I could plot a new course or continue the original. I would do this at my leasure as long as we turned.
I never ran aground or hit any thing, not in Alaska, Calif., or Hawaii. I learned before GPS

Of course you two live here so you know what the Surfing /ocean, thats before MEXICO. I was familiar with the ocean, I still have never fresh water fished, 70.!
When I got married, my. Job was in Anchorage, Ak. I was going back to The Big Island Kona. Yea..! I mean every where.
It took 9 days to get to Anchorage from Long Beach, Ca..
When we got to Anchorage we drove through it August 11 th (it snowed three feet on Sept first)
Anchorage is between Turnagain Arm and Knik Arm. We just happened to get there at high tide. We were surprised that it was so beautiful and not a single boat or ship was out on ether Arm.
We drove through town and went north up TURNAGAIN. It ends at Portage Glacier, on the other side of the highway. fresh water lake with Blue iridescent ice pieces ( we use that ice for party drinks etc) wind blown to the beach. We started back to Anchorage and pulled out where we could see Turnagain. And the ocean was gone, as far as you could see. What was out there was even scarerer.
WELCOME TO THE 25-30 FOOT TIDE @ 9 KNOTS ...! give or take.. Living on the Big Island,, and California I didn't think I could be surprised, a ex L,A county life guard. And swam AAU competition, from elementary school.... For ever.
The reason i mention this is I was in Alaska and I found out about the Coast Guard Auxiliary. And for the life of me I can't remember how I discovered them.
Any way my wife and I started going to there classes, back then they were just a few bucks. My wife 20 yr old Surfer chick was a BBshell ie.. (blond bomb)
I got to be friends with the Commodore of South Central Alaska Foltilla.
We ended up taking every class that they gave. Steve said the only thing left was for me to put on the Uniform....
The last uniform I had on was US Army Jungle fatigues, hang ten swim trunks.
We were also interduced to the Alaskan Sailing Club. I guess it is called networking ( the old kind). LORAN $$$$$ but GPS was military , when it first appeared it had 12-24 satellites the more they add the more accurate it has gotten.
I think you guys on the off season would really have fun. Its not like school it was work book info from CGAUX.
By the way I know 10,000 times more about the Eastern coast. Man is it different I had no idea. I hope you don't mind me living vicariously . LOL
I hope this made sense. .. 33° water is like walking a tight rope you don't fall as far but the out come is about the same.
      They have great navigation class.
I should mention that my time was a long time ago. I can't imagine that they don't have classes . I really liked Dead Recon Nav. I didn't tell that my buddy took two guy's that worked for me. On the foggy morning Chuck told them to go to the Bow and hold there arms out... In case we ran into "something" couldn't see 10'.
I knew the fog was 5 mi, and absolutely knew where we were. AND OF COURSE.... BOSTON WHALER.
Steve and I swamped his whaler off Bear Glacier in Prince William Sound when we were Silver Salmon fishing.
Any other boat I would not be typing.
