I made this folding knife

  • Let's face it: no one actually "needs" to carry around a super sharp knife in their pocket and most pocket knives are probably mainly used for cutting bits of apple into pieces that suit the hands of small children.
    But folding knives are really nice and the slipjoint mechanism has exerted a certain fascination on me since the first time I broke a Swiss army knife. There are only two moving parts but it is quite challenging to get it to work properly.
    I accepted the challenge and designed and built my first folding knife. It is a simple design with wooden scales made from piece of holm oak that I nicked from a firewood pile in Corsica years ago. It's not perfect but I like the clear straight lines and it cuts pieces of apple rather well.
    It was a lot of fun to make and I hope you enjoy the video!

    You could've done a nice filework on the lower, motionless part of the spring, it would make this knife look so much better!
    Also, washers under future pin heads (maybe brass washers, to make it look better?) would prevent wood cracking when pins are hammered. Counter-sink the washers beforehand, in a slightly drilled steel plate.

    • @imadethischannel
      @imadethischannel  2 года назад +1

      Hey, I was going for a minimalistic look, so no ornamentation and cleanly sanded pins directly into the wood. Washers could work, though.
