When I started they gave me a work area, access to every piece of equipment I needed, a pile of material, and a blueprint and said build it. No help. No coaching. Nothing.

I’m sure there was plenty of warning in Aaron’s mental state and physical health of being over worked for so many years because of Richards greed. No job is worth that kind of stress in life. A lot of people would be a lot happier and more free if they took a little lesson from Aaron and his decision making. He’s doing what he loves and he’s doing it on his own terms. Richard has plenty of money he could just find another master mechanic to over work to meet his impossible deadlines lol. No boss cares about you. They only care about the money you make them. I met Aaron when I visited Dallas. Really nice guy. Wish him all the best! He’s a car guy and has a passion for cars and the GMG business model has worn him down.

Not sure why this is so current when it happened years ago? Summed up really quick with Richards comments, “he worked for me for 14 years”, when it should have been they worked together for 14 years. Richard was the Sales guy, Aaron was the Shop guy, but it came down to one owner and not two. I’m sure that stung. But who knows, a lot scripted, a lot we the public don’t know. But I will say, bad business model; every leader has a strong right hand man, and Richard didn’t see it that way (apparently).

Having all the riches but still feeling unfulfilled. GMG is starting to sound like Facebook who always want to try and be the next Facebook. Aaron was the brain behind the projects. Dude has a lot of experience , skill & has made many connections. The only thing stopping him from achieving his own success is working for someone else. i don’t think it’s his own burnout from cars, especially since he built his own shop and still makes his own projects. i just think he got tired of doing cars only richard liked and wanted to build.
i applaud you aaron . i worked for a mechanic for 18 yrs of 60 hr wks and told him im retiring and could not eccept that. i opened his shop every day , he came and left as he wanted .the day i moved my tool boxes out , it hit him. i handed his keys back . he was in tears and repented of his hostitility toward me. over the years. i forgave him , hugged him and said ill miss your customers. you showed mr rawlings you dont have limitations i proud of you.
Oh Pu-Lee-Ze. This is what happens when a production company offers to let you make your own similar show and offers you a percentage that sounds better than your salary. Which then falls on it's face btw.
Kaufman could not take the pressure because he's a lousy mechanic and clueless. Anyone who does not know enough to use break in oil on a new engine can not call himself a mechanic. It's that simple.
This can all be summed up very easily. Look at what Aaron drove off in. A regular mans work truck. But 100+ hours a week he had to build cars for Richards personal collection and customer cars. Richard made the money, reaped the major benefits, and Aaron just stayed humble and he saw how much Richard and the business changed around him and did what he had to do. Fast forward to today, Aaron is where he should be, highly respected and recognized by his own style.
He was always the talent there. Busted his butt all the time, tons of pressure and overtime and Richard took the public credit for all his work. Aaron will be successful and a great boss.

Big props to Aaron. After fourteen years it isn't easy to walk away from anything. I'm sure he took a long time on his personal days to arrive at that conclusion, which brings a lot of uncertainty full-circle. But at the end of the day he believed in himself, the way he saw his life going and put one foot in front of the other to make that vision a reality.

Aaron is a genius and a hard worker and his name is legendary so he can't fail, his followers will always appreciate his skill. I've met and been around Richard Rawlings a few dozen times. He is about himself and only himself. Aaron on the other hand was just a good dude. I'm surprised he stayed as long as he did.
Richard should of offered him a percentage of the company rather than a wage. Aaron was too big of a face of the show for him to leave. The show Certainly turned for the worse when he left.
Richard was too greedy, and by then full of himself. Shortly after he made the statement that no one person is not replaceable. The original idea may have been Richard's ( Wooohooo's), but Aaron was a key part of making it a success, but each year the show went on, " Wooooo-Hooooo" treated Aaron more and more just like any other hourly wage employee. Besides, I've heard enough Woooo-Hooooo to last me awhile.
Huge fan of the show, I agree, and in fairness, people need to evolve in their professional lives. Don't blame Kaufman for quitting, he did 14 years working in the same job. People need to move when they get itchy feet. Hindsight says that some of the deadlines for finishing those cars would have aggravated the purist in him. Perhaps if he had been offered a big chunk of business ownership then it might have swayed his opinion, but that's a moot point. In a small group there's always a potential banana skin if you're too reliant on one person and their presence is pretty much taken for granted.
Good for him. Aaron definitely seemed like the brains of the whole operation. I was at SEMA one year and there was a huge line around a booth for autographs as I walked by. I asked one of the guys standing there who the line was for, and he said Richard Rawlins. All I could think was, why?
Do not blame the man for wanting to find his own place in life . Weather he fails or wins , you have to try. Richard did it so why shouldn't some one else . But I do think he should have given Richard a two week notice . Richard will not loose at the game . He'll roll with the punches . I say good luck to both of them .
As a long time tech I always thought it was funny when some new manager would fire some old knowledgeable tech for having a beer while at a restaurant having lunch but proceed to call them a month later begging them to come back only to find out they scored a way better gig. Yeah everyone replaceable but are you ready to deal with the headaches of your replacements. Aaron doesn't impress me much. Neither does Richard but they got way more$$$ than I'll ever have.
to be honest, he's right. He was working for him. He was the one building all this. Sure, Aaron was a great mechanic, maybe the best one out there for gas monkey at the time, but he didn't risk his money on this project, he didn't risk anything, he was just getting paid to build cars. It's easy to talk bullshit about richard, but in the end of the day, he's the one that has to think on how to keep moving foward, how to pay the bills, how to get promotions, magazine covers, how to keep moving foward. Guess that this doesn't even matter, Richard proved that Aaron is replacable (company wise, not show, he was great in the show and I do miss him) and kept making money, building new crazy cars and making a name on the car world.

When I managed a Radio Shack long ago, I was forced to fire a guy due to low sales. It came from the higher ups as he wasn't costing us but he wasn't productive as much as they wanted. I told him and then took him out to lunch. I am not a pushy sales type person and I appreciated his style and so did the customers. My store closed down 1.5 years after they moved me out ( I got downgraded to assistant manage of a huge store so my income actually went up slightly ) as customers just stopped wanting to go to a pressure sales place to shop.( the sales people were all replaced by new pressure sales people ) I saw RS's demise coming years before it happened. Management stopped caring at all about the experience and just wanted sales. I can understand getting burned out. Many times the money doesn't matter if you are miserable. I left Radio Shack < a year after that, never to return. I have been self Employed since, I get to do it my way now.

It's not about the pay or the shop conditions. Been there, done that myself. What it boils down to is working too long under the gun with someone else's time lines and ideals.... that don't jive with yours. There's no right or wrong, just time to go your own way and hope to find another slot where the boss doesn't try to change you.... along with over / under selling your abilities to your customers, passing the buck, or taking credit instead of giving credit.
Well you see thays usually how a business works. The boss pay you for your service to keep their place operational. That's literally the definition of any job
Were he at a regular shop I'd probably agree, but this is a TV show. I've worked in reality TV on shows that weren't anywhere close to as popular as this one, and the "stars" were making more than $15K a week. Could he make more elsewhere? Sure, but he'd most likely have to take more personal financial risk to do so.

Not sure why this is so current when it happened years ago? Summed up really quick with Richards comments, “he worked for me for 14 years”, when it should have been they worked together for 14 years. Richard was the Sales guy, Aaron was the Shop guy, but it came down to one owner and not two. I’m sure that stung. But who knows, a lot scripted, a lot we the public don’t know. But I will say, bad business model; every leader has a strong right hand man, and Richard didn’t see it that way (apparently).

It’s all about profit and flipping cars but within that they seem to be becoming victims of their own success. A shame really it is.
Aaron was the brain behind the projects. Dude has a lot of experience , skill & has made many connections. The only thing stopping him from achieving his own success is working for someone else. Now he has nobody pressuring him to get things done instantly and the money he gets for his work goes to him not another man

i applaud you aaron . i worked for a mechanic for 18 yrs of 60 hr wks and told him im retiring and could not eccept that. i opened his shop every day , he came and left as he wanted .the day i moved my tool boxes out , it hit him. i handed his keys back . he was in tears and repented of his hostitility toward me. over the years. i forgave him , hugged him and said ill miss your customers. you showed mr rawlings you dont have limitations i proud of you.

This can all be summed up very easily. Look at what Aaron drove off in. A regular mans work truck. But 100+ hours a week he had to build cars for Richards personal collection and customer cars. Richard made the money, reaped the major benefits, and Aaron just stayed humble and he saw how much Richard and the business changed around him and did what he had to do. Fast forward to today, Aaron is where he should be, highly respected and recognized by his own style.

He was always the talent there. Busted his butt all the time, tons of pressure and overtime and Richard took the public credit for all his work. Aaron will be successful and a great boss.

Big props to Aaron. After fourteen years it isn't easy to walk away from anything. I'm sure he took a long time on his personal days to arrive at that conclusion, which brings a lot of uncertainty full-circle. But at the end of the day he believed in himself, the way he saw his life going and put one foot in front of the other to make that vision a reality.

Aaron is a genius and a hard worker and his name is legendary so he can't fail, his followers will always appreciate his skill. Richard is a businessman like many that come a dime a dozen, in it to win it yet not knowing the true value of those that stood on hands and knees so that they could climb the wall and wave instead of reaching down to lift those that got them there. But don't give up on him too early, i know he gonna surprise us someday when his heart grows a few sizes bigger lol. He's not all that bad.

I've met and been around Richard Rawlings a few dozen times. He is about himself and only himself. Aaron on the other hand was just a good dude. I'm surprised he stayed as long as he did.

Richard was too greedy, and by then full of himself. Shortly after he made the statement that no one person is not replaceable. The original idea may have been Richard's ( Wooohooo's), but Aaron was a key part of making it a success, but each year the show went on, " Wooooo-Hooooo" treated Aaron more and more just like any other hourly wage employee. Besides, I've heard enough Woooo-Hooooo to last me awhile.

Huge fan of the show, I agree, and in fairness, people need to evolve in their professional lives. Don't blame Kaufman for quitting, he did 14 years working in the same job. People need to move when they get itchy feet. Hindsight says that some of the deadlines for finishing those cars would have aggravated the purist in him. Perhaps if he had been offered a big chunk of business ownership then it might have swayed his opinion, but that's a moot point. In a small group there's always a potential banana skin if you're too reliant on one person and their presence is pretty much taken for granted.

Good for him. Aaron definitely seemed like the brains of the whole operation. I was at SEMA one year and there was a huge line around a booth for autographs as I walked by. I asked one of the guys standing there who the line was for, and he said Richard Rawlins. All I could think was, why?
Do not blame the man for wanting to find his own place in life . Weather he fails or wins , you have to try. Richard did it so why shouldn't some one else . But I do think he should have given Richard a two week notice . Richard will not loose at the game . He'll roll with the punches . I say good luck to both of them .

As a long time tech I always thought it was funny when some new manager would fire some old knowledgeable tech for having a beer while at a restaurant having lunch but proceed to call them a month later begging them to come back only to find out they scored a way better gig. Yeah everyone replaceable but are you ready to deal with the headaches of your replacements. Aaron doesn't impress me much. Neither does Richard but they got way more$$$ than I'll ever have.

He was the one building all this. Sure, Aaron was a great mechanic, maybe the best one out there for gas monkey at the time, but he didn't risk his money on this project, he didn't risk anything, he was just getting paid to build cars. It's easy to talk bullshit about richard, but in the end of the day, he's the one that has to think on how to keep moving foward, how to pay the bills, how to get promotions, magazine covers, how to keep moving foward.
Guess that this doesn't even matter, Richard proved that Aaron is replacable (company wise, not show, he was great in the show and I do miss him) and kept making money, building new crazy cars and making a name on the car world.

When I managed a Radio Shack long ago, I was forced to fire a guy due to low sales. It came from the higher ups as he wasn't costing us but he wasn't productive as much as they wanted. I told him and then took him out to lunch. I am not a pushy sales type person and I appreciated his style and so did the customers. My store closed down 1.5 years after they moved me out ( I got downgraded to assistant manage of a huge store so my income actually went up slightly ) as customers just stopped wanting to go to a pressure sales place to shop.( the sales people were all replaced by new pressure sales people ) I saw RS's demise coming years before it happened. Management stopped caring at all about the experience and just wanted sales. I can understand getting burned out. Many times the money doesn't matter if you are miserable. I left Radio Shack < a year after that, never to return. I have been self Employed since, I get to do it my way now.

It's not about the pay or the shop conditions. Been there, done that myself. What it boils down to is working too long under the gun with someone else's time lines and ideals.... that don't jive with yours. There's no right or wrong, just time to go your own way and hope to find another slot where the boss doesn't try to change you.... along with over / under selling your abilities to your customers, passing the buck, or taking credit instead of giving credit.

Were he at a regular shop I'd probably agree, but this is a TV show. I've worked in reality TV on shows that weren't anywhere close to as popular as this one, and the "stars" were making more than $15K a week. Could he make more elsewhere? Sure, but he'd most likely have to take more personal financial risk to do so.
