Hey guys, great video! You should look into Tai Chi sword and Kali/Escrima stick fighting. Both styles involve weapons with little to no hand-protection and have movements intended to compensate. Tai-chi sword, in particular, would probably translate very well. Keep it up, you guys are great!!
@@SellswordArts True. Even with actual sticks I still take most shots in the hands 😂. I'd love to see Tai Chi sword adapted to lightsabers, I'm just not sure how well the style translates to actual combat 😅. Thanks for the reply!

I'd like to remind that Taijiquan utilized not only jian, also the sabers - dao were used as well. but yes, there are styles in taijiquan which would translate well to Star Wars Universe
@@Varim.Gaunniss what I was thinking of is usually done with Jian. The two combatants maintain blade contact, almost like their grappling, breaking away once the line of attack is clear. If lightsaber blades actually stick to each other (as some bits of Star Wars mention) then Lightsaber combat would have a lot of binding/ winding in it. Apologies for the confusion.
well jedy vs sith fight are more speedy, faster reaction, using force and so, but basicly common human probably dies by him self, cause it like swinging around with a verry hot blowtorch, dangerous and deadly, and most different in dueling with light saber and real sword, you are not worried about breaking you blade with hard strike its not bend and not geting notch, so you can hit as hard as you handle it
Spinning and jumping isn't effective, no matter how fast you are. Jedis and siths are usually anthropomorphic beings whose bodies are similar (if not identical) to ours mechanically. If both combatants are equally match, the one who opens themselves with a spin is going to lose against the one who delivers fast and precise, yet not so fancy, movements. In regards to the "swords breaking" topic: Hiting hard wouldn't be necessary at all with a lightsaber since the energy does all the work for you. On the other hand, real medieval swords don't break easily. Yes, they get damaged, but it is rare for them to literally break as you see in works of fiction; they're made for the battlefield, they're expensive (not throwaway crowbars), and they're meant to handle a lot of punishment.
@@addictedtochocolate920 because real swords are expensive, you dont want used it like cowbars, and you tries cut instead of smash, and not hit the armor, but a weak spot, for light sabers does not matter swing, cut, thust or smash, and only few very rare materials can resist it, so you dont care about armor, and spinning is of course bad idea, anakin feel the results in 3rd movie)
@@kozmodemyanov You wouldn't want to use the lightsaber as a blunt weapon. Yes, it won't hurt the blade, but you simply don't have to use it like that for it to be effective; all you need to do is touch you opponent with it. Now, if your opponent is wearing full beskar plate armor (not like a Mando, but something even more protective), you're in a big disadvantage because you can't touch your own blade; you can't halfsword for more precision. In this case a smaller Lightsaber or a vibroblade would be more effective, but let's not even go there; if we're being brutally realistic, long range weapons like the blaster should be superior in most battlefield scenarios, jedi involved or not.
@@addictedtochocolate920 the only thing jumping gets is a bit more force but that’s very very situational and wouldn’t recommend doing it. It can be done it’s just very easy to spot, dodge, and counter
@@addictedtochocolate920 “spinning and jumping isn’t effective, no matter how fast you are”. I mean that’s quite literally the entire principle of the Ataru form- the way of the hawk bat is a heavily aggressive form that’s based on the momentum and energy built up from gymnastics and integration of rotations and physical strikes along side saber strikes to make up for lack of natural power or strength in those who chose to use the form.
In universe the blades have weight to them, the crystals that power them are alive in a way so the blades have the weight of someones mind, if they have too much on their mind or are fighting against the blade it will weigh down a lot. Another in universe thing, yes the blades attract each other, it's a literal bind with lightsabers. Honestly Lightsabers are way cooler because they don't behave like real swords but they still use swordsman-like techinics for cultural and ritualistic reasons. I'm a sucker for a good world building >:^)
In cannon there isn't really a way to give a lightsaber a guard. The only way I see it is if they used Bescar (the metal used for Mandalorian armor), but that would be super expensive. They only blade that has that in cannon is the darksaber, which was made by the first Mandalorian jedi.
@@StoryArtsConcepts I'm talking about traditional guards, ones made of metal. Kylo's guard isn't a guard per se, but more of an exust vent to expel heat from the hilt. If you were to say, aim to cut a vent off the saber, it would eather combust or turn off. And it provides no protection because of this.
@@RedMelodyMusic oh a traditional guard gotcha and yeah I’m aware of the reasons against ren’s cross guard but it would follow a similar logic as to why not just go for the saber’s main emitter
Ultimately, the best medium-to-close weapon in Star Wars is a blaster/similar energy projectile (maybe second only to a thermal detonator and a bit of sneakiness, but you can't carry many of those). The *only* time a blaster doesn't absolutely wreck everybody is if a magic space wizard - who can see what you're about to do seconds before you do it - is in play. In which case, since lightsabers can block blaster bolts, if there are two space wizards fighting, and at least one of them has a lightsaber, then both *must* have lightsabers for there to be any semblance of a battle. Your mistake in this demo was not having future-sight... or a good blaster at your side.
Obviously there's no way to try it, but I'm curious of how you imagine they'd be used if we assumed the blades were weightless. Not knowing the blades were supposed to have weight in some sense, I always imagined that "realistic" lightsaber use would be something closer to a spear than a longsword or katana. Of course fight scenes would be pretty boring with two people with their arms fully extended poking at each other's fingers.
take a flashlight and pretend there is a blade in front of it, now pretend youre cutting something, now pretend you dont need much movement to strike it, you end up flicking the flashlight around
To answer your question about lightsaber either repelling or attracting. In cannon the blades of a lightsaber are known to be attracted to one another.
you guys are right you don't need to worry about edge alignments but there were occasions when chars talked about the blade heing heavier than they thought but it's going lighter within time so yeah no weight no edge alignment even if there was a guard once the blade hits the handle like you frequently did in the video it'll destroy your lightsaber so.Might as well keep it lighter for yourself
every light saber fight would leave you dead or wounded , hand , arm , leading leg even if you get hit you can still seriously injure your opponent before you die .. the only way you could win is to fight someone without alight saber .. all you really need to do is just get close enough tp tun it on . with lundge or grapple you could end most apponent within 20 feet instantly if force push , jump or pull is used .. there would be no fencing
I’m certain someone else has said this already but I wonder if having “the force” totally changes how two lightsaber wielding combatants fight on a fundamental level. Like practically being able to both predict the next move… no wait, I’m thinking about it as I type it and realising that creates too much fuzz and then they’re basically back to square one. I don’t know. Awesome video though I enjoyed watching duelling lightsabers that was cool
I think in new lore lightsaber still dont have mass per say but give off the feeling they do, do to the energy corsing through the krystal and coming out the emitter
I wonder, theoretically since you don't need to make sure to have power behind your strikes, why not hold from closer to the pommel instead of the normal position when using one handed?
In the Darth Bane books cortosis is said to be able to withstand lightsabers. The Republic is purchasing cortosis from the morning planet of apotros to use in the hulls is their ships. There is also a character that has cortosis vibroblades who fights against a Jedi with a lightsaber. The blades don't disrupt, they mearly block and withstand the lightsaber
I know this is an old one, but from a collection of Cannon sources, lightsabers (in the Star Wars universe, not reality) have been determined to have weight (soo many sources), and to be drawn towards each other (Kanan Jarrus teaching Sabine Wren how to use the Darksaber in Rebels). Looking at it from a scientific view, lightsabers would be a projection of plasma, which does in fact have mass and would be drawn to itself. Plasma is highly energized gas, which considering how much energy Kyber Crystal's have in cannon makes sense (though how it would be able to be modified to work underwater then is beyond me XD)
I have never been able to find anything beyond very basic and vague descriptions of what the forms are. Do you happen to know where I could find something more detailed?
My guess? Use it like a rapier, less force needed (no pun intended), and keep it the hell away from your body. Pretty deadly and effective weapon if it were to exist, but you should complement it with some beskar gauntlets at least so you don't accidentally chop off your fingers. As for the design: i would reduce the length of the hilt so it's better suited for single handed techniques; that will provide better reach. A guard (a functional one. Looking at you, Kylo Ren) would also be nice
Absolutely right, i personally would like a shield in the left arm, a beskar full plate armor, helmet with my ligh blade in the tip of a long beskar stick thank you.
Form 2 ataru scabbard and curved hilts the lightsaber is an extention of self. Mine would be silver blade, double sided pull apart and used as a single Saber with range control on the blade. And maybe a nunchuk with a knife on one end and a gun on the other.
Hand strikes are a common technique and can be devastating. In most cases you'll not be able to hold your sword, which obviously makes defending yourself difficult. It's why most swords made for dueling have substantial, complex guards to make hand hits difficult. But in longsword for instance, hand strike (and techniques to defend your own hands) are very important.
The last reason to keep going after 2016: some guys are actually researching lightsaber fencing techniques on a very cool lightsaber replicas. Not a very argumented position, but i suppose lightsabers aren’t supposed to be an effective weapon. It is often mentioned that the Force, not an actual knowledge and sword mastery is what really makes a lightsaber user so effective that’s why i think it is actually a ceremonial weapon/thing that demonstrates power and wealth and not a really made to be effective weapon. Like katana for a samurai, not a real only melee weapon (there is more practical wakidzachi) and not really useful weapon at all (main weapon of samurai is a bow) though still an arm that is respected and that is cool so it doesn’t meant to be really practical battle weapon (don’t forget that in shintoism a sword is kind of sacral thing). And for a Jedi i suppose it can be applied to. Like he is a concentration of force and for him it makes no difference to wield a piece of wood or a lightsaber and so maybe the technology of making lighsabers is ancient, sacred and traditional, so nobody dares to change it for practical things because it is a weapon of status. Still don’t know not a star wars fan, am more intrested in chainsword fencing subtleties if you understand what i mean. Awesome content though gj guys
You're right but you're missing something, Lightsabers were made for force users, it's why they come in different colours, the sith use them to show power. They provide an advantage that blasters can't: they can cut through nearly anything. Lightsabers are actually pretty ingenious weapons when you think about the circumstances of their creation
if it were two women doing this, it would take more than a light wiff to end the fight... ladies getting stabbed with lightsabers all over the place in the new series and they're fine
This is cool but here is the thing. They are LIGHT sabers. Light doesn’t have mass. Cool video I love y’all’s content. I also understand the little disclaimer thing that you did at the beginning, I’ve personally always been in the weightless side so that’s it. Great content. Not a hater. Keep it up!
They actually aren’t made of light nor are they sabers. Very much a misnomer, but they are A: closer to tubes of plasma and B: according to the lore, you have to actually physically push the blade through the force. Irl, these things are actually about as difficult to wield as a typical longsword if not more, weighing in at about five pounds or so. Do they officially have mass? This question is never answered, but they do say that it FEELS like they do when you’re using one.
So basically in a real life lightsaber battle either the opponent would be killed in a second or you would accidentally kill yourself in a second.
In the beginning they were talking about whether the sabers attract, repel, or are frictionless with each other; for the record it is established in Star Wars Rebels that the blades do attract towards each other

I actually do practice some Kali/Pakumat/escrima. I trued a bit of that in this video, but with the length of the sword not so useful here
@@SellswordArts True. Even with actual sticks I still take most shots in the hands 😂.
I'd love to see Tai Chi sword adapted to lightsabers, I'm just not sure how well the style translates to actual combat 😅.
Thanks for the reply!
@@charleshurst1015 which tai chi sword? you've probably meant jian (straight sword) for yang-style Taijiquan (Tai Chi)? I'd like to remind that Taijiquan utilized not only jian, also the sabers - dao were used as well. but yes, there are styles in taijiquan which would translate well to Star Wars Universe
@@Varim.Gaunniss what I was thinking of is usually done with Jian. The two combatants maintain blade contact, almost like their grappling, breaking away once the line of attack is clear.
If lightsaber blades actually stick to each other (as some bits of Star Wars mention) then Lightsaber combat would have a lot of binding/ winding in it.
Apologies for the confusion.
Looking a lot like the first Lightsaber duel on ever between Darth Vader and Obi Wan
well jedy vs sith fight are more speedy, faster reaction, using force and so, but basicly common human probably dies by him self, cause it like swinging around with a verry hot blowtorch, dangerous and deadly, and most different in dueling with light saber and real sword, you are not worried about breaking you blade with hard strike its not bend and not geting notch, so you can hit as hard as you handle it
Spinning and jumping isn't effective, no matter how fast you are. Jedis and siths are usually anthropomorphic beings whose bodies are similar (if not identical) to ours mechanically. If both combatants are equally match, the one who opens themselves with a spin is going to lose against the one who delivers fast and precise, yet not so fancy, movements.
In regards to the "swords breaking" topic:
Hiting hard wouldn't be necessary at all with a lightsaber since the energy does all the work for you.
Should do a lightsaber vs Mauls double bladed Saber, would look sick
I mean kylo ren’s saber?
The best oightsaber duel in all of Star Wars is the duel between Obi-wan and Maul in Rebels
Quality nerd content 👏🏼
The expression at ‘Disney’ 😑😂
To answer your question about lightsaber either repelling or attracting. In cannon the blades of a lightsaber are known to be attracted to one another.
Mr longsword would love the crossguard sabers. Just be careful because your guard also has 2 small blades in them ;)
So what I got from this video is that real sword fights are mostly short and not particularly entertaining.
Not at all. Combat in all situations is very short, brutal, and carnal. Combat has been romanticized like crazy in media.
I believe you are wrong. I can show you what real sword fighting techniques look like, if you wish.
@@JohnDoe-kh1mt It’s just my opinion. Can’t really be wrong or right on something like that.
@@Josh-tj9tj Yet, I shall still show you the way! ruclips.net/video/YN_1UZbhi2w/видео.html
"I just tried to do German Longsword and touched myself" yeah, that'll get ya haha
First 10 seconds, fingers chopped off. Yep.
I saw you guys at that Renissance Festival. I said hello.we talked about HEMA and swords you all were very nice.
I love how so many people hate on kylo ren's cross saber but this just confirms its very useful xD
you guys are right you don't need to worry about edge alignments but there were occasions when chars talked about the blade heing heavier than they thought but it's going lighter within time so yeah no weight no edge alignment even if there was a guard once the blade hits the handle like you frequently did in the video it'll destroy your lightsaber so.Might as well keep it lighter for yourself
seems like the better strategy would be to hold the lightsaber at the bottom and single hand it for a bit of extra reach.
every light saber fight would leave you dead or wounded , hand , arm , leading leg even if you get hit you can still seriously injure your opponent before you die ..
the only way you could win is to fight someone without alight saber ..
all you really need to do is just get close enough tp tun it on . with lundge or grapple you could end most apponent within 20 feet instantly
if force push , jump or pull is used ..
there would be no fencing
Phrik, from the old Dark Forces game was supposed to be lightsaber resistant as well.
Ps they stick to each other, so no sliding. Thats why they do not need cross guards
This is why in Star Wars there are different forms specifically for light sabers. My favorite being form 2.
Dooku and Qui-gon training circa 30 BBY - Colorized
I wonder, theoretically since you don't need to make sure to have power behind your strikes, why not hold from closer to the pommel instead of the normal position when using one handed?
Cortosis would disrupt and turn off the light saber for a while, the ships were protected by ray shields that were against radiation and energy.
I would like to see y'all actually try out the lightsaber forms of combat, I guarantee that you'll like Form Soresu, and Count Dookus form
I have never been able to find anything beyond very basic and vague descriptions of what the forms are. Do you happen to know where I could find something more detailed?
Lightsaber forms are useless and does not apply to fencing, this isn't about choreography
Maybe the Force is a hilt for their hands?
So in conon the lightsabers stick to each other, so there is no need for a guard
Star Wars fencing is Form II: Makashi, Count Dooku used it.
@@CaelumSolLux tell that to Grevious' bottom right hand
Form 2 ataru scabbard and curved hilts the lightsaber is an extention of self. Mine would be silver blade, double sided pull apart and used as a single Saber with range control on the blade. And maybe a nunchuk with a knife on one end and a gun on the other.
I really like to See the Holtzman shield when you need to go below 5m/s or something like that or was it 4
try this with a crossguard lightsaber
How do you feel about the ASL-FFE ruleset?
Have you guys trained with great swords and pole arms?
What about crossgaurd lightsabers? The darksaber also sort of has a gaurd.
The vents on the gross guard would just get sheared off
@@SellswordArts i guess that is true, thought the energy has to go through the vents, does it not? Also thanks for the reply.
You should do kylo’s sword
Stabby stabby
Clashy clashy
so i have a question, out of curiosity would a hit to a hand from any bladed weapon in an actual fight do to an attacker?
Hand strikes are a common technique and can be devastating. In most cases you'll not be able to hold your sword, which obviously makes defending yourself difficult. It's why most swords made for dueling have substantial, complex guards to make hand hits difficult. But in longsword for instance, hand strike (and techniques to defend your own hands) are very important.
Cortosis eh? Sound like Leslye Headland was watching your video.
The last reason to keep going after 2016: some guys are actually researching lightsaber fencing techniques on a very cool
lightsaber replicas.
I like lightsabers it's Beautiful
Longer sword is pay to win. Plus lots of time would be double hit or both of them die.
if you cover the blades with some kind of glue maybe you can replicate what are you talking in the intro.
Honestly, since the blade is supposedly completely weightless, I would personally just have the blade be set up to be ridiculously long.
if it were two women doing this, it would take more than a light wiff to end the fight... ladies getting stabbed with lightsabers all over the place in the new series and they're fine
