I know Daveed Diggs deserves all the love but can we give Okieriete Onaodowan some love too? It’s so amazing how badass and buff his voice was in the first act as Hercules Mulligan and now he’s this weak, smooth voiced James Madison in the act two and it’s just so awesome!
He has such a rich, smooth voice. It would've been great to hear more singing parts. Oak says he originally auditioned for George Washington but the part had already been promised to Chris.
Daveed admitted himself that he doesn’t like to sing much, and he prefers to rap like in guns and ships (you should definitely react to that one). His singing range is limited, but his stage presence makes up for it and is my favourite.
The dance, the energy, the walk, just DAVEED, a national treasure... This song is so underrated... But I'd like to highlight Oak here, he just came in with a TOTALLY different approach, at first sight I wouldnt know Hercules and Madison are the same person, and he deserves more recognition for it
I’d posit that Daveed had the most physically demanding role out of any of the main cast members. He was bouncing all over the place a lot of time. And he performed some extremely complex rap sequences flawlessly.
True, but also Leslie especially during The Room Where It Happens. The dance sequence at the most challenging part of the song is crazy! And he nails it so well. Each time I watch Hamilton, I'm just in awe of Leslie at the end/climax of TRWIH and Daveed during that high af jump in Guns and Ships
I just realized that when daveed was about to go down the stairs, one of the servants tried holding his hand and he brushed it off with disgust. Mad props to the choreographer, damn.
Love the juxtaposition there at the end -- Alexander almost passive aggressively, awkwardly injecting himself into the conversation with his own melody while Washington is rolling out the red carpet for Jefferson's arrival with that beautiful little vocal run.
...No doubt this is Daveed Digg's number...but Okieriete Onaodowan's whole section in this song lives in my mind rent-free, I'm in love with his voice/performance.

Daveed Diggs has one of those outstanding voices that I can always recognize no matter what he’s singing or what production he’s in. I think he did a fantastic job in Hamilton but he’s in some other great works as well!
daveed diggs always says how he never sang before this role so it was such a huge and hard change for him, but for his lack of training for it, he pulls it off pretty well

Also she was like...14, if I remember right, so even if she wasn't enslaved it would be beyond creepy.) I love and hate Jefferson in this show. I mean, he's portrayed as being so cool, but he's also an absolutely awful human being, and Daveed Diggs shows this all so brilliantly.

That lamb you mentioned is Sally Hemmings, Jefferson's concubine and mother of his children. He took her to France and got even closer to her. Some say he actually loved her. Fun fact: Daveed can't dance. He knows this. I saw him in an interview talking about the Jefferson dance and he said that they tried to choreograph him and he couldn't get it. The best he could do was the sort of silly Jefferson walk and they finally decided to keep it. Vocally his is the weakest of the cast, but his energy and his ability to rap super fast are amazing.
for some one who is a rapper admits he cant sing well, dance never acted or been a musical I think he is amazing secondly Lin picked him especially for this role.
We need to talk about Oak! He doesn't have a whole song of his own, but his tone is so rich! Maybe talk about how he was unceremoniously dumped from Natasha, Pierre.
With his purple costume with ruffles and his over-the-top stage demeanor, I thought Jefferson was a throw back to the late-1980s Morris Day from the Time.
One of my favorite moments in the show: the music, the lyrics, the dance moves and Daveeeeeed. And may I say, I want to steal his purple jacket/coat! The costume designer did such an amazing work on this show
One of my favourites ! Ah who am I kidding? They are all my favourites ! But I love Daveed Digg’s. He is so energetic and funny. His dance moves are just the best. I smile all the way through his number 😊
Daveed is a phenomenal actor, his portrayal of 2 different characters in 2 different acts for the same musical is brilliant. He gives each of his 2 characters something different to ensure the characters message comes across well. I love how genius LMM is with how upbeat and jazz/ blues this song is. The choreography I believe is basically based upon DD not being able to quite get it right so they left his funny Jefferson walk in, a sort of swagger that he continues throughout the rest of act 2. Also Oak, Chris and Lin, their parts are brilliant. And as always the ensemble are killing it.
That line about not being able to believe that they are free struck me too as so clever about the difference between the colonizers and the slaves. As has been mentioned below, the line about "Sally, be a lamb, darlin'" is a deliberate reference inserted to highlight Thomas Jefferson's well known affair with his slave, Sally Hemings. As was also mentioned in one or more comments, she was his late wife's half sister (slave owner father/slave mother). She accompanied his daughter to Paris when she herself was still just a young teenager and Thomas started a relationship with her that she had no ability to refuse. She had multiple children that were later confirmed to have been his. The show is so deliberate and intentional and there is always something new discover on top of it being incredibly entertaining.
I love how Burr's line from the beginning of this number is present throughout the show and changes based on his opinion of Hamilton. Toward the end of the musical that line is thrown out almost as insult.
We went to see Hamilton here in Australia in April and then we were lucky enough to win the $10 lottery last week so got to go again with front row seats . We love Hamilton 😀
You reflected on the piano line… I think some of the backing to this show is the true gold. I can listen to Wait for It without hearing a single word and it’s still amazing. Magic.
I saw there was some criticism saying that the play was ignoring or not really addressing slaves, but they very cleverly show metaphors in What Did I Miss. The song itself, with him being accompanied by his slaves in this upbeat number in itself represents how history makes the revolution and the 'freedom' sound great for the American people. Since the song is in Thomas' perspective, his slaves' lack of freedom is entirely ignored, and they are expected to follow his lead while he indulges in the 'freedom', seeing it all through his rose-coloured glasses-like how history is shared and explained today.
I believe Lin wanted Daveed for this because of his phenomenal rap skills after they did Freestyle Love Supreme together. He is the song write and rapper in the group clipping., which is incredible. His cadence in the song Blood of the Fang, gives me heart palpitations. The movie he co-wrote and stars in Blindspotting is my favorite. He does a lot of spoken word/ rapping in it and it's so incredibly well done.
I really loved your commentary about the style of the performance vs the rest of the show! I never thought about how the jazz style is a stand out based on how long he has been gone.
So about the character, Jefferson was kind of a big celebrity amongst the founding fathers even before becoming SecState. He helped write the DoI, invented the swivel chair, and was a HUGE southern personality with a “larger than life” kind of character and air about him. Hence how he’s played and given this piece as well. Then TJ came into a room, he always stole the show.
My 5 yr old daughter loves this song. But she adores Lafayette and asks for the dancing Lafayette song. Which is this one :-) The hamilton song I really want and Patiently waiting (not succeeding btw) for "who lives, who does, who tells your story"
A comment on the “ill see you on the other side” “Til we meet again” line, the next time Hamilton and Lafayette meet is the next show where they “meet again” for the first time.
Honestly, I literally shouted AH SO GOOD exactly at the same time as you 😂 this piece is just so good! I absolutely love Daveed Diggs he makes it so easy to get into the flow of the character, I love it 🤩
I know this video is about Daveed and yeah, he's great. I have always been stunned by the difference between how Okieriete Onaodowan plays Mulligan and Madison.
Couldn't imagine anyone better for the two roles Daveed plays in this musical. He killed it with both performances and that's why he won that Tony. He never did Broadway before, so no, he's not a Broadway actor, but still was meant for every second of Hamilton.
So when I finally got my husband to watch this, he already liked Daveed from preintermission as Lafayette. When he shows up with that fabulous purple jacket and cane singing a jazz number, all he could say (with the biggest smile on his face) was "oh my god". XD After we finished he confirmed Daveed's characters were his favorite in the whole show.
Please do a reaction on who live who fies who tells your story There are so many hidden unertones in the short piece i want to see if you pick up on them Can we take a minute to appreciate the intricate chorography that went into what did i miss.
I love all your reactions to performances, showing performers how others do it and what they should or should not incorporate into their performances. Sometimes you have dropped observations about shows as a whole. I wonder if you'd consider a series on your most loved musicals (e.g., Les Mis) in which you broke down the show and analyzed it as a director would.
On you comment on the piano line at the beginning be the same as the opening song, I had a college course on Hamilton (crazy I know) and we developed motifs for when the same musical line is repeated. We call that one the milestone motif.
Brilliant subtleties in the writing...the humorous dig.. "Sally, be a lamb" references Jefferson's slave with whom he took when she was 14, and with whom he fathered several children.
I’d love to see you do Guns and Ships. Daveed Digg’s raps in that one are amazing and it’s just such a high energy and exciting number I can’t hear it without wanting to dance.
There is a cover of: "Maybe (Next to Normal)", sung by LaChanze and her daughter Celia Rose Gooding. I would love you to react to that video, It is incredible how well they do it, it's such a shame that it hasn't gone viral ... Greetings from Venezuela, I love your videos.
Love, love, LOVE Daveed Diggs' acting choices as Jefferson throughout all of Act II. On the issue of slavery, certain nods have been noted like the ensemble is wearing black neckbands to denote their slave-status and the interaction with Sally, but one tiny thing I noticed on 3rd viewing is that as Jefferson struts down the stairs one of his slaves approaches him and touches him (I think shakes his hand); as the slave is walking away, Jefferson wipes his hand on his coat...ooooooo. Of course despite cast participation in the process, the choreographer would make at least some of these choices but the way Daveed performs them without making them a big deal is just sheer poetry. I would watch him read the phone book just to see his expressions and gestures, his stance and changes of voice tone. He's an utterly amazing performer in all that I've seen him in.
This song always takes me back to the jazzy style of the old Schoolhouse Rock videos. I’ve always wondered if this number was a nod to the those and how they taught a generation of kids about the revolutionary war?

Vocally his is the weakest of the cast, but his energy and his ability to rap super fast are amazing.
I’m so glad they did, I love the way Daveed bounces around the stage :)
for some one who is a rapper admits he cant sing well, dance never acted or been a musical I think he is amazing secondly Lin picked him especially for this role.
@@kimcornelissen1529 friends cast friends
For having the weakest voice it still manages to be fully enjoyable to listen to
We need to talk about Oak!
I would love to see what his original dance steps were supposed to be
Everything about this song is perfect
I ADORE Daveed! Such a fun, clever number! I would watch him all day long!
Daveed and Ok are perfect for their roles. Daveed's rap are amazing adn Ok's voice is quite unique. I love them.
You reflected on the piano line… I think some of the backing to this show is the true gold. I can listen to Wait for It without hearing a single word and it’s still amazing. Magic.
Jefferson: what did i miss?
Hamilton: the whole first act
Jefferson; *whispers in french accent* or did i?
Hamilton: *confused screaming*
Love that you mentioned the "Sally" line 👀 lol! So glad that someone else caught that! I love that Lin thought to throw that in.
just the captions on this video are so crazy all it hears throughout almost the whole video is just music that is it no words
It’s always such a joy to watch your reaction videos. Great job.
Thank you so much for reviewing this number! My absolute fave. Lin really goes all out to introduce his presidents, doesn't he? 😁
I really loved your commentary about the style of the performance vs the rest of the show! I never thought about how the jazz style is a stand out based on how long he has been gone.
This is my favorite, I am entertained and smiling throughout.
One of my favorite numbers from this show! Daveed is just fantastic in both roles. When will you do the opening number and My Shot?
So about the character, Jefferson was kind of a big celebrity amongst the founding fathers even before becoming SecState. He helped write the DoI, invented the swivel chair, and was a HUGE southern personality with a “larger than life” kind of character and air about him. Hence how he’s played and given this piece as well. Then TJ came into a room, he always stole the show.
Brilliant performance 🎭 and just love your reactions.
Daveed brings so much energy to this role.
Never been so early for one of your videos!!!
My 5 yr old daughter loves this song. But she adores Lafayette and asks for the dancing Lafayette song. Which is this one :-)
The hamilton song I really want and Patiently waiting (not succeeding btw) for "who lives, who does, who tells your story"
Lafayette song is “Guns and ships”
Just found you. Binged like 5 videos today. Keep up the good work.
Hands down one of my favorite numbers in the show. Daveed killed it as Jefferson
Daveed has this very strong Prince vibe that i frickin love
Love, love your critiques! You understand performetd!
A comment on the “ill see you on the other side” “Til we meet again” line, the next time Hamilton and Lafayette meet is the next show where they “meet again” for the first time.
This is one of my favorites!
I CAME AS SOON AS I HEARD
(daveed is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs)
Daveed is FANTASTIC
Honestly, I literally shouted AH SO GOOD exactly at the same time as you 😂 this piece is just so good! I absolutely love Daveed Diggs he makes it so easy to get into the flow of the character, I love it 🤩
These reviews make my day! Please review Yorktown! The energy of that song is palpable. It’s my go-to for an energy boost 😜
I know this video is about Daveed and yeah, he's great. I have always been stunned by the difference between how Okieriete Onaodowan plays Mulligan and Madison.
Love this!
Daveed Diggs is just outstanding in everything he does.
Look at you all dressed MDP!
Couldn't imagine anyone better for the two roles Daveed plays in this musical. He killed it with both performances and that's why he won that Tony. He never did Broadway before, so no, he's not a Broadway actor, but still was meant for every second of Hamilton.
Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story is so gorgeous it makes me dissociate
The Funny Thing I Heard Is That When Jefferson First Comes Out The Chord Turns Minor. Lol
I’m going to be honest, this is the only RUclips video I have ever seen which has the full “What’d I miss” song in it, both visual and audio.
Please do a reaction on who live who fies who tells your story
There are so many hidden unertones in the short piece i want to see if you pick up on them
Can we take a minute to appreciate the intricate chorography that went into what did i miss.
We can take more than a minute
Not just a "Well earned nomination" he took the Tony home.
I never see any hype for my guy who did the splits 😭 and the way he stood up too!! TOP👏🏾 TIER 👏🏾
Yep! Ephraim (can’t remember his last name)
@@charlottecunningham2141 Sykes I wanna say
Hes just vibing and i love it
Love it!
Was hoping to hear something about Madison's verse.
still waiting for Non-Stop!
Excellent observation
I hope there's a reaction video of The Election of 1800 coming purely because of Leslie's reaction to Hamilton backing Jefferson
