Marathons philosophy and Durandals ambition. Bungie's Marathon lore.

  • In this video we examined Durandal, the most important character in Bungie's Marathons story.
    With Marathon Bungie created a really dense lore full of subtext. In this video we dig deep to understand Durandals perspective, and begin to explore where the logical conclusion of these ideas lead us. We explore Durandals hopes, ambitions and philosophy, and how these ideas relate to the broader Marathon story told by Bungie in the Marathon trilogy of games.
    The AI Durandal is arguably the main character of the Marathon game franchise, having a key role in every game, and being the namesake of Marathon:Durandal. We also subtly veer into some wild speculation near the end. Speculation that is supported by Marathons lore. With Marathon Bungie created a franchise that has influenced much of what they've created since. The character from Marathon subsequently inspired A.Is from Halo.
    We also hint at how these ideas might relate to other ideas explored by Bungie in Halo.
    "Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:"-Isaiah 42:5

    As I wrote under the video by The Examined Life (of Gaming) about Marathon Infinity:
    "I think Greg Kirkpatrick is a precursor of Yoko Taro. Many themes, the philosophical, literary & psychological references, the meta-narrative, some of the writing in the Marathon trilogy and the usage of alternate timelines in Infinity remind me of the Drakengard & NieR saga. The only other first person shooter that ever gave me those things is EYE Divine Cybermancy, by Streum On."
    So, I recommend the Drakengard & NieR saga (especially the NieR games, while the Drakengard games are not as good to play), E.Ψ.Ǝ: Divine Cybermancy and also Pathways into Dakrness (now in a beautiful Aleph One version) for their themes.

    Man, totally mind-blowing. I think I am connecting many dots as to the several Bungie universes and how they're connected. I believe the Marathon symbol has this meaning; closure of one universe (Marathon), giving birth to another one (Halo), and yet another one (Destiny), but none of those last two closed as yet.

      @Pfhunkie 4 года назад +1

      @@senormoo4749 It's already been pretty much confirmed in easter eggs that there is some connection from Marathon to Destiny so it's a possibility. I know Bungie has said that Marathon and Halo aren't connected but eeeeeh, might just have said that because the IP was officially owned by Microsoft by that point. Doesn't mean that wasn't the original intention.

    • @senormoo4749
      @senormoo4749 4 года назад +2

      @Pfhunkie Yeah definitely, also can't forget all those Marathon symbols and references. If Bungie didn't even want to put ODSTs into Halo 2 in the first place (MS did), then it's curious they also put the Marathon symbol on them. Also Cortana herself is basically a reference to Durandl. Even the level/world design like in the Halo control room. They were definitely trying to tell us something it seems. :)

    • @Ghostvirus
      @Ghostvirus  4 года назад +3

      I don't think they ever said Halo and Marathon weren't connected. They might of said that the two franchises took place in different universes however. But then again can we confidently say that Marathon:Durandal and Marathon Infinitys final timeline technically take place in the same universe? Do the entities at the end of the final Infinity terminal survive? If so where do they go? Where did the timeless creatures in Primordial space come from?

    • @Pfhunkie
      @Pfhunkie 4 года назад +3

      @@Ghostvirus Tried looking for it as I remember it being said in interviews but I think it's been lost with time. All I can find are people referring back to it and they use the words "Bungie said they don't take place in the same universe" which, upon thinking about it, is a very tongue in cheek hint that says this theory might be right.

    Pretty late to the party, but do you think that Tycho was maybe fully aware of the presence of the W’rkncacnters and that was what would bring about his ultimate plan? We see in marathon infinity that the presence of just one of them is enough to distort time and space and causes the cyborg to relive multiple timelines over and over again. Maybe Tycho realized that by sacrificing stars, he would be releasing them and they would repeatedly reset the universe

      Thanks for the compliment! There are a few puzzles in the first game that can be a tad jarring. Especially the one on colony ship for sale. I wouldn't blame you for looking up a guide for the specific level you're having difficulties with.
      But as far as general advice I guess just try to scan the environment to make sure you're aware of the location of all of the switches, sometimes they're up high and easy to miss. Figure out where you have to go. Make sure you understand what each individual switch is doing. Toy around with it to try to figure it out. Many switches used in puzzles in Marathon 1 are timed, so once you're confident you've hit the right switches make sure you move fast. Hope the advice helps. Best wishes.

    Tycho dreams of becoming truly immortal, Durandal wants to be truly in control.
    Also, I am of the opinion that Pathways is not in the same Universe as Marathon, they just share a character in the Jjaro. My reasoning being the large difference in the way in which they help people stop the W'rkncacnter. In Pathways they actively reached out to humans with a holographic message with words and messages directly from the Jjaro. In MI all that happens is that the Jjaro station activates, which may have been due in part to outside stimuli besides the W'rkncacnter, and then the tech in that station is what causes the Security Officer to jump timelines in order to find the "correct" one (Greg Kirkpatrick confirmed the timeline jumps were the Jjaro's tech responding to the sentience of a near-by creature, presumable the SO. The source for that is an interview GK did with Hamish Sinclair, I've re-posted the text below:
    HS: The Infinity manual provides us with the first indication that everything is not as it seems. The M2 events at Lh'owon have been rewritten and Durandal is about to meet his demise at the hands of the Pfhor. The Prologue level reaffirms this yet on level 2 we appear to find ourselves journeying back in time and working for Tycho! Are these in effect three different timelines?
    GK & CG: Yes, the player is jumping from a number of possible futures trying to find the path (eat the path) that will allow him to survive the cataclysm on Lh'owon, and unite him with 11th clan in a way that Durandal never could. How the player is able to do this jumping has to do with the unique interaction between Jjaro technology and sentient creatures.

      "Tycho dreams of becoming truly immortal, Durandal wants to be truly in control.
      "
      Durandal dreams of both. Its not as if Durandal desires to die. :P
      I think its possible that Pathways and Marathon take place in different universes, it could work. But it's also possible that they take place in two different epochs in the same universe or that the Jjaro tech was left behind and the Jjaro we see in Pathways are communicating from where ever they went.
