What a great lineup! I remember thinking at the time it was shown, that Peter Gabriel would have won but I was delighted that Paul got it. A very important album with great songs and great videos.
Thank you for recording this way back when and posting it. I remember the night he won and always wished I could see it again! How cute he was when his name was announced. Magnificent album!
Solid lineup of albums, almost all classics in their varied avenues. For me, Graceland and So are pinnacle achievements and show the musical greatness of Simon and Gabriel respectively.
Nice! Peter Gabriel got the loudest response. Insane to think two of the most important African influenced albums of all time competed at the grammies the same year.
What sold this album wasnt paul as much as it was the most important and legendary line-up of Ladysmith Black Mambazo! Those in the know, knew what was up with this album.
Peter Gabriel was totally shut out of these Grammy's ("So" is STILL an incredible album), but tough competition back then. If I remember correctly, "Sledgehammer" a few months later took home almost every MTV VMA award (when MTV actually played videos and was still cool)
They owed to Paul Simon BUT Peter Gabriel was everybody's favorite. BTW classic 1986 praised albums that were not nominated are The Smiths-The Queen is Dead, REM-Life Reachs, Metallica-Masters of Puppets, Madonna-True Blue, Prince-Parade and Run Dmc.
Who is everyone, all people out there? No, that's not true. And which are praised classic albums? Praised by who? Any shitty music paper called Musical Express or Rolling Stone? Learn to rely on nothing but your own opinion. And your own opinion is one in billions.
Despite what went down 35 years later CONTROL still remains groundbreaking as it was then and as it is now. In my mind and personal opinion that was the album of the year winner.
Agreed! But we both know...going up against those white acts for the biggest title of the year was going to be an uphill battle. Whitney was nominated the year before and got snubbed as well. Michael was nominated the year after and got snubbed!
@@mreynol1 every album you love which doesn't get the award is snubbed. Oh wait, you think only black artists should get all the important awards. Correct?
Wow...here's my breakdown....Out of all the Male artists none of their albums hit #1! The closest was Peter Gabriel's So, at #2, and Steve Winwood's Back In The High Life at #3. Not even Graceland!, which did chart on the Pop Albums Chart, but not on the Billboard 200! Which is a shame to the female artists...where on the other hand, both Barbara and Janet had their albums hit number one! With Barbara having 3 weeks, and Janet having 2 weeks! Now, dont get me wrong, Barbara is a great singer, but she had already had won album of the year, and her success grew over the years, and her Broadway album is a good classic also, but Janet hands down should have won, PERIODT. Now before Control came out, she already did have put out 2 albums, but they didnt have enough success, but however this particular was considered her "push" album, having it gain more attention and be successful, and officially adding Janet as a freshman in the music industry. And how yall gon say that Peter got the loudest response when all I heard was screaming and how crazy people went when they heard and saw Control, that's how you know people love her! She was an icon! And also I swore out of all the nominees, only Janet performed, putting on a show stopping Performance, having the whole stadium go wild! So there...Janet should have earned that trophy! But on the flip side, at least all the artists are all now Grammy winners! But yea, Janet definitely did not deserve that loss! 😒
NARAS went at least in this case for the ALbum with more critical and social consciousness, besides members of the recording academy don't tend to recognize popularity over critical acclaims recordings as was the case with GRACELAND. But I do agree that at least Jackson should've won one award, at least one, she truly deserved it. The 80s were full of extraordinary recordings, and as you can see it was quite difficult to choose one above the rest. Nowadays the Grammys just recognize whatever is there, and even though I won't blame them for that-they don't have control over the music that's presented to them- Today's music doesn't lit a candle, not even one over the music that was awarded back in the day in my opinion.
Apologies, but “Graceland” went to #3 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart. I was a music buyer for a record company and it was a BIG seller. Not sure where you got your information, but I just double-checked and it did indeed hit #3, same as Winwood.
Grammy doesn't have anything to do with charts, popularity, hit singles or numbers of social media followers, but with merits. And Graceland deserved it the most. Have you ever listened to the album from start to finish? I guess no. And by the way, worldwide Graceland sold more than any other of the other nominated albums.
No, she wasn't. Graceland is a great blend of American and South-African folk music mixed with slightly pop, dance and Americana elements. It's an important album in the music history. And by the way, with 14m worldwide it sold more than Control with 10m. Having the most hit singles doesn't mean to have the best album.
@@landischorsch Sales don't mean anything either. At that time, the academy is more conservative. Blacks have to pull a rabbit out of a hat to win in that category.
Gabriel looks pissed because he knows he won't get it, but all these albums were wonderful compared to the recycled garbage that passes for music today. All you need is some auto tunes, beats and you're set!
Nominated for AOTY in 4 different decades 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s.
You forgot 'You're The One' in the 2000s.

The insane part about this is that every single album up for the Grammy is legendary now and would beat anything released today in a heartbeat.
