  • In November last year Alex (one of our Tooling Engineers) was part of the Autodesk University event in Las Vegas. He was tasked with making this machined aluminum housing on our UMC-500. In this video Alex and Andrew talk about the steps Alex took to setup the part and some of the constraints and issues he had to consider during the process.

Nice to hear the thoughts and reasons behind the ops. Weird part, though.

That 1/2 hsam2 ramps aluminum like nobodys business I bet its just as comparable to skip the drill and ramp it down on a .400ID at 10deg. I've been very pleased with how good it is at roughing aggressively. it will also drill if so desired. i found that out when i forgot to reset the length when i changed my tool gage length and didn't reset the tool, drilled one into my part about 1/4 @13500rpm on a gm25x @5% rapid (59.ipm) and it sounded pretty good, like a drill . wasn't even clogged up on the tip after. on a later job i was doing bunch of pockets and was drilling into my pocket at 40ipm@12500rpm .150 deep then taking off at 175ipm with a 85% old school stepover and it worked throughout the whole job. pretty sure i had at least 40 cutting hours on that tool and I'm still using it.

I think there needs to be more videos like this for full ops to help see the process all the way through. I have a VF2 in my garage and it's still intimidating to me sometimes on how to do certain things.

Job shop owner: Your lucky if you get a print nowadays. Customers are too lazy to make a pdf of a part. When you question a hole size, they get their panties in a twist. You ask if it's for a bearing. Yes, it is they come back. What's the tolerance on it. There reply is; I want a slip, semi push fit. That's what they come back with. WTF!

Most "hobby" customers simply do not know that there are several numerical tolerances for things like bearings or bolt holes. To them it's "just make it go in" or "a bolt hole is a bolt hole, why overcomplicate things" so they rely on engineers or machinists to determine the best fit.

Are you asking about the the online course, which you can find it here: learn.haascnc.com/ ? Or the certificate that comes after the online course and requires an in-person test? Contact me at bofallon@haascnc.com and I'll answer your questions. Thanks, Bryan - Haas Automation

Is this a "purely demo" part or is it functional? It looks like a phone or a camera case.
