Fun fact - I started my YT channel after watching a Devin Nash video a few years back. 2 years later, sitting over 100k subs and building a nice spot in the Marvel space on YT. I'm sure I am far from the only dude in this comment section who took inspiration from you. Thanks a ton!
started watching your educational content when i was at like 10k subs nearly 2 years ago, just hit a 100k a week ago. learned so much from you. 100% my favorite vid is "why youre bad at marketing probably". just wanted to share how much free value you really provide to us. cheers man! also 921 gang
man its wild to see how much your channel has grown dude D: years ago i remember stumbling upon your stream had a different nickname, i think you were at around 20-30 viewers could be wrong but i think that was 6-7years ago, its really awesome to see youre still at it! fuckin awesome man!
Started a video editing tutorial channel in 2020 and your work was extremely motivating especially in that initial stretch of building a library of valuable work. Building a business alongside that selling plugins and templates has put me right in the creator economy middle class even as a relatively modest niche channel. Thanks for your work.
9:21 been loving your stuff for over 4 years now Devin. I usually feel like most marketers are kinda dumb, but your analytical takes are always so refreshing.
Started my RUclips channel a few years ago thanks to your work! Now I try and use that influence to benefit the speedrunning community by spreading awareness and promoting the positive aspects of our little community
I never really liked the word "influencer". It sounded more like a term of manipulation rather than engagement. So i considered prefering the term, "inspirer". That being said, it's what held me back from committing to working on a channel. I haven't figured out what i can provide to "inspire." Still figuring out my "why". Why do i make content?
This is coming from some rando, so take it with a grain of salt, but it seems like you already know-if even subconsciously. Just how you prefer the term "inspirer", isn't that your "why"? To inspire. You can inspire people with anything, really. All it takes is that new, unique perspective and it can just up and change someone's life.
@@catdog1900 This comes from a Voice acting coach I follow. The "why" (in the context I'm using) is something that is strong enough to keep you wanting to make content (or anything in life). To "Inspire" people may not be strong enough of a "why" to some. An example the VA coach used for himself was, he continued work and grow his VA career because he was providing a future for his son. His son was his "Why" he continues to work in the VA industry, even when it gets tough. That was a strong enough reason for him. If it was just simply so he can get famous, it probably wasn't a good enough "why" to get through the rough times and failed encounters.
One thing that I enjoy about Devin Nash videos is that he has a very calming voice. There's a shocking amount of videos, especially the "look at this idiot" style content where the creator is just upset, or irritated, and that gets me upset/ irritated. Then there's the hype videos where the high energy content creator is showing a clip every 4 seconds. Yes they are entertaining, but I don't want to have to focus on the screen to be able to understand what message of the video is. I'm just pointing this out that some content creators make it look easier than it is. We all reap the benefits of Devin Nash's Zen Buddhism, in that we can toss these video on the background while working, and come out at the end of it calmer and more inspired from listening to him speak. There's just not enough content going around like this, possibly because youtube algorithm buries it in exchange for more the former high engagement stuff.
"I've never met anybody that isn't interesting." Damn Devin, I literally sat here watching this whole video thinking, "I don't have anything interesting to say." What a simple way to tell me to shut up and start telling stories. 🙂
The long watch callout, always know that the good information comes from watching a whole Devin Nash video. Thanks for keeping everything real in the creative space.
I can listen to you talk for hours. You’re so insightful. You can upload without setting up the camera and upload from voice memos if you want to be more casual. Not many people do it like Devin Nash
I started this channel and your content was a huge help in not only getting me over that initial hump of getting no viewers, but getting more motion that I thought possible even in my wildest dreams. Haven't been able to dedicate as much time as I want to RUclips these past couple of years but this has still been a life-changing experience. Appreciate your content a lot!
I really love how you switch the language from content creation to story telling. It helps piece it better on what we should strive to do whenever creating something.
For me i became a lead editor for a small youtube channel that is growing at a good beat :3 I'm happy to see you back you were my favorite streamer back in the dark covid days.
Content creation IS the best way to be successful in this online world. Making art is not, but content creation is not art. In this dwindling world of people going to the theater, or people having the mental capacity to sit down for two hours and watch an actual developed story, whether it be a film or a play, it is really a decision someone has to make as to what they want to be with their talents. But make no mistake about it, if you want to be successful on RUclips, you are simply doing exactly what you said. Making content for people to consume, and trying to figure out what is the most viral thing you can make. There’s no exposition, there’s no character development, there’s none of that. It’s simply jump off a bridge, naked with two exploding firecrackers in each hand, and go viral. That’s content creation, or review every camera, lens, cell phone, car, everything. That’s content creation. been to the movies lately? How many people were in the theater? Anybody talking about their favorite series on HBO Max? Talking about the characters and the storyline? Not really. That would be talking about Art. At least in my humble opinion. :-) and not to say one is better than the other, that’s for the people to decide, but I think that’s a good explanation and response to your video. Or not. Lol. Thanks for sharing in any case.
I can confirm Devin's point about views - I've been a full-time streamer since 2018 and I average about 50 concurrent viewers on a good day! really happy to see you back, @Devin Nash. We need a voice like yours right now, especially with the amount of grifting happening in these spaces!
Now I feel blessed being a English speaker living in Thailand which is still considered a 3rd world country. Cheers Devin. Very good motivations indeed
Happy for you that you are able to make a video like this, congrats! I started dabbling in content creation about 2 months ago (making TikTok videos & Reels), and I just got my first real brand deal offer, which feels great since I basically started from zero when I began making content. It's definitely been a slow start and I think it's very hard to grow on those platforms for me (I want to start creating content for RUclips soon), but it's exciting nonetheless.
Thank you, Devin. I always found your videos insightful and was surprised to see your upload. My fear of putting myself out there and thinking I am not providing any value keeps holding me back from actually doing more, but I agree with the whys that you listed. Seeing the other comments of those who have "made it" with your content, I hope I will get there one day.
Hey Devin -- this was very life affirming to hear and I think a very healthy way to think about storytelling. Glad you're putting yourself out there again because I think you have a lot to offer the world.
the videos you had when you would bring people on and talk about there channel was really cool. # 9:21 As someone who always wanted to make content, researched and learned just about everything one would need and still haven't. Looking at it as story telling is very very helpful
9:21 just want to say that I have always admired and been inspired by your content. I think you have incredibly valuable things to say and I’m happy to hear that you’re coming back to tell more stories. Your advice of “if you are getting negative comments it is actually a sign that you are doing something right because it means you are making people think and having an impact” keeps me going when I get a flurry of negative comments. Thank you for what you do and happy you’re back.
9:21 Good to see you back around here Devin. It's crazy how fear can creep up on us before we even know it, I apreciate you fought it and decided give a piece of yourself to the world once more. Been watching for years and really love your videos.
The parasocial aspect is still hard for me to wrap my head around after 3 1/2 years with more faces comes more of these instances and trying to tackle them. I glad you bring it to light a bit, sometimes I wish there were more tools or just videos on how to around navigate those relationships as a full time CC.
9:21 I stumbled on your channel a few years back when I started uploading to RUclips. By far, your information has been the best and most relatable to me. This video hits home and is something i think about all the time.
14:38 I feel like this is one of the most lost aspects of life, let alone content creation. Everyone has a story, even the shittiest of our society; there’s a reason & story behind why they’re so shitty. Good to see you back, Devin!
thank you. have had a paralyzing fear of being misunderstood that i've been working on letting go. i want people to fully understand where i come from when i convey a complex / outlier thought, and that i can consider thoughts & perspectives without believing them myself. but there will always be people who just won't get it, whether by worldview or stupidity or just amount of effort required to get on the same page. i also introspect and evolve dramatically, so what i published 9 months ago may not be what's congruent with me today, and so on. but fuckit, i just made some old rants public and will keep going forward. love u
I don't entirely vibe with the argument that we should call it storytelling, because not all content creators are telling a story. But I do agree that creators should find less soulless ways to identify their roles, whether it be storyteller, comedian, advisor, reviewer, etc.
Great video! I was thinking about something like this not too long ago. I think there should be a movement to bring back the YOU in RUclips. I feel like because the platform has moved away from that notion, we have gotten a deterioration of entertainment and ideas that hasn't gotten better. Going back to the roots of what made RUclips great is something I feel is necessary
Thanks so much Devin. I think about creating videos everyday and I always get snagged on "I should do reacts and commentary because I want to make money" and then I get sort of grossed out at that idea. I respect and love a bunch of commentators and maybe I just look up to them for their discipline and consistency. But I want to tell personal stories of this blessed (and sometimes hellish) life. I'm a fine artists by trade and I think I can translate my taste and style into video. I really needed this video bro.
Glad to see you back, Devin. I can saw with certainty that your livestreams and your videos were one of the most influential pieces of content that make me want to be a content creator myself. Thanks to that, I am working on some projects of my own. Thank you!
Been cutting back severely on gaming and social media and have been focusing my attention on DMing a lot in DnD. You definitely played a role in this so thanks Devin!
Wow, I can totally relate to that fear of creating videos. The weird thing about it is, one would say the more videos you create and the bigger your channels grows the more the fear goes away. But for me it’s actually the opposite, because you gonna expect more from you and you feel people having the same higher expectations about your videos
A great friend of mine recently recommended me your Channel...really appreciate this message. The term Content Creator or Creation never really resonated with me...Storytelling def. does because makes it less about the views/numbers n more about the message. When you mentioned comdians...I automatically thought about Dave Chappelle (my fav) and his ability to not only make me laugh but tell me a story with a meaningful message (while still making me laugh lol). I always had this niche/ablity to story tell and I'm now expanding/excercising this ability. I'll be sure to keep this message you provided in mind...Thank you for this video and good luck to you on your story telling journey!
Thanks for highlighting that story telling can also just be a great way to leave a legacy of work as a professional. I'm a big believer in this as a great reason to tell stories online in what way best suits you. Great video! Keen for more. 😊
Totally agree about the word "content creation." I HATE IT for exactly reasons you cite. Thank you for calling that out.

After the secret call out at 9:21 I had to say that I am glad you are back. It is always a pleasure to watch your videos. Hope to see more cause I'm sure you have so much to say about things that are interesting in the world we live in with your experience so far. I just want to add that I did not see the whole video at the moment of writing this and already agree with you on several things. One of them that is so big for me lately is negative feedback from people about everything that is not up to their pair. Just sad to see what became of some people and what is consider normal these days. Keep up your work, it means a lot to hear your opinions. Take care and stay strong.
9:21 Man, you put into words exactly how I have felt about "content creation" when I wasn't able. It's such empty things fed to people to better the "content creator". Or at least, that's the level of disingenuousness I've felt about it.
I'd like to share some of my take aways from your content and things you've spoken about on streaming (hoping i'm not a dick at traffic guy) but I think the thing I've always enjoyed/appreciated is that you are real with us. Like you will present information to the best of your ability but not try to force feed it to us. And what I think I mean by that is you give a ton of insight you have inspired me to make content or tell my story and have added so much value and perspective that I honestly couldn't thank you enough for. And I think I speak for at least a few of us thank you for passing your story along to us and thank you for making an effort to pass the torch in a way because I think most people given your situation would not try to do something that gives back to people in general or next generation and I appreciate you inspiring many of us in the world. (sorry for the typos I didn't finish college)
I 100% agree with you. I think the most successful “context creators” are the ones who find success not creating content with views and engagement at the forefront but the ones who just make the content they want to make and find people who enjoy that. If you build an audience by being yourself, your potential is limitless
Thank you for this video. I'm an entertainer in the comedic realm at heart. I have felt this way ever since I could remember my earliest memories. I've been at RUclips since it started in 2006. I would love to hear more insight for us silly entertainer folks
I really enjoy this videos! All the reasoning on why people should start story telling (creating content) or not are very good reasonings! The #1 fear of what prevents people to not start story telling is the fear of judgements and the lack of confidence into yourself. As long as people overcome those fears and have faith into themselves, anyone can be a great story teller!
I do agree with what you talked about. When I stream and chat to my viewers, I like to be informative and talk about the games that I'm familiar with. Rpgs, certain action games, sometimes anime, etc. I think it's really nice to have an audience that is willing to share their experience with you, feedback on what games they have been playing, my thoughts on other games, and so on. I never talk about politics or IRL related matters. I try not to talk about my personal life even if it's not that great as of late. We are all struggling in our way, so having a place to chat and relax has always been my top priority in my opinion when it comes to being a streamer.
9:21 club: I've been watching for years and I appreciate all the nuanced takes. I'm vibin' very hard with the topic of Obligation and that's partially where I'm coming from. My approach is to work towards being a better person, so I can have the peace of mind and focus needed to put out something valuable (and seems I'm getting close, finally). You did a very smart thing: you took a step back and improved things. Compare that to people who manage to get 35 CCVs on Twitch and quit their jobs, then get trapped into the grind and eventually collapse. ALSO: Storytelling is completely underutilized or even ignored in a bunch of places and that's a shame, because solid storytelling is IMHO the best antidote against the deluge of "LOL RANDOM" material.
9:21 callout! There might be some things I could share to a community online, but I think I enjoy being a consumer more than putting in the effort to create content. It has been sweet to hear what streaming/content creation has brought to some streamers I watched though, in a positive way. I also like being able to make people laugh so maybe that's something I could explore more someday. And yes, I do like this format as well.
9:21 The moment I realized how effective storytelling is on social media for me, I started focusing on that more. It's helped me out for my creative mind and helped my audience understand who I am.
Started this channel about a year ago and watched your stuff even before then. Been a wild ride and really appreciate you giving some of youre insight of ways to view making videos and stuff like that. Plenty thanks bro
09:21 : Call out! Glad to see you back! Here are some suggestions for future content: -Please Do a collab with Dan Koe. Don't care what it's about but between you two, I haven't been this focused on improving my life since I was in the army over a decade ago. -Review books on storytelling. I'm currently rereading 'A Hero with a Thousand Faces' that details the classic Hero's Journey. I'm also rereading Stephen King's 'On Writing'. Could you suggest books of this nature esp for the modern age? Or even books that just have a good story in general and explain why? Hell even bad stories would be good because we can learn what NOT to do. -Lost Chapters: Pinterest & Reddit. In Gary Vee's new book 'Day Trading Attention' he left out Reddit and Pinterest in his platform overview chapter. So if he's not going to cover them specifically Devin Nash is the next best thing. From what I understand Dream used Reddit + trend jacking to tell his unique stories. And Pinterest seems to have a largely female audience that could cross streams with entirely new audiences. Other than that man... I really appreciate the work you do. With some discipline and luck I hope to say someday, "Yeah I achieved x because how helpful Devin Nash's content. Go look him up yourself." I already do that but without the me being successful part. Ha!
I don't usually feel the need to comment, but I'm really excited you're coming back to making stuff more regularly! I've learned a lot from your insights into the industry and can't wait to see more.
I Agree whole heartedly about the word *content creation* just being thrown out there. I see this all the time with Only fans models, and they just throw it out without any respect of what word Implies. In a strict sense of a RUclips environment, it's editorial content that requires extensive learning, knowledge and skill to create even standard content to be competitive on the same field with other creators. You might inevitably surpass or not surpass certain creators based off what niches and channel direction that best fits their career, so there is always some uncontrollable individualism to who becomes the biggest creator. Yet in RUclips, where content creation is so demanding, there is always a certain Respect for the word. It isn't thrown out like garbage OF content consumerism.
I've always appreciated the way your brain thinks/works. You shouldn't be ashamed of that. I know many value getting to "pick your brain", so never stop sharing.
ive been looking to get over my fear for years, been enjoying twitch since 2012 and always wanted to do it. bought my first comp in 2016 and stopped there... thanks for the motivation to keep the dream alive.
my day job doesnt give me huge capital and neither does digital illustration in my own time as "content creation", but sharing art with people online always feels great when the story resonates and everyone can have a laugh. its such a struggle to balance and remember the purpose for why you create especially when likes or revenue tend to be business indicators of resonating with the audience.
I have recently come to a similar conclusion about making videos. I have tried to make "Gaming content" for about a year and a half, and it left me unsatisfied. I told people when they asked to see my channel that I would only show them once I have something I'm proud of, but only recently have I thought about *making the videos I'm proud of*. Instead of creating content in hopes to one day be successful, I will be making the videos that are important to me and create any form of art that I am proud of, no matter the engagement of it, and like you said, tell stories. Thank you!
Jeez, man. Finally a decent video about storytelling. Thank you for this! The thumbnail kinda fooled me, because it leads you to think it's just gonna be another generic "content creation" baloney. I'm trying, and not gonna give up, changed my niche once more, but gonna stick with this new one. Tomorrow i'll be dropping the best video i've got so far, talking about the wildfires in my country 😢. You guys are invited to watch.
@Devin Nash You're two things 1. You're in gaming space 2. You're in the businesses/marketing space That alone makes for interesting listening in people who have their toes in both.... That's why I end up listening to most of your videos...
9:21 love hearing how you think No matter what I do in life I will always have storytelling, and I will always strive to do better. I am a bit scared about how I will ever make a living, and I am very skeptical of youtube or twitch filling that need for me, or any of my content creation endeavors, but I have to keep creating because it's who I am as a person. Also, I have a team of professionals who are going to help me with job coaching, life skills, etc. Lifetime access to an organization that helps people with developmental disorders(autism in my case) to live independent lives and maintain gainful employment. I will never stop fighting.
921 - I enjoyed your advices in the past that you gave. They never impacted me in some meaningful way yet I enjoyed them. Maybe overall they helped me in something but nothing super particular as I was never a "content creator". Maybe one day, maybe not, maybe I will become story teller. But hey, I still enjoy your advices and they help pushing me in correct (maybe?) lane of life.
I appreciate the video devin I wondered where you’d gone. I enjoy your deep thinking and business mind when it comes to certain topics that peak my interest. I’ve gotta say I took in all your points to create and felt your negatives as I began to create myself and tried to learn to be a good story teller when it came to what I produced. I don’t feel it’s an obligation for myself personally to create as much anymore, hence it’s kinda took a back seat. Do I miss it maybe a lil. The question I always ask myself is why should I sacrifice my time living real life and working when time is something we all don’t have abundance of. I feel this video leaves even more conflicted than I originally was 😂 still a good discussion tho.
I do different niches on 3, kinda 4 channels and there was one where I was making "content". It just felt wrong after a while, I wasn't going to look back at those videos with a sense of pride, so I stopped, even though that channel was the most profitable one.
I'm currently working on a video and idk I'm in a weird spot where the content I want to make is just to entertain, make people laugh, just funny stuff with friends, but I worry some of it borders on being offensive nowadays. I also worry because I'm not the best editor, and I've sat on videos for multiple months and ended up not uploading or deleting it not thinking it would be good enough, or I'd get hate for it. Always enjoy your content either way, I end up learning a lot. 9:21
Here for the secret callout and just wanna say that your vids are some of the reasons why I'm still creating after some time. Thank you for everything Devin :)
Would love to see a video about competitiveness in the marketing agency world. Essentially what makes a company ‘better’ at marketing than the other if they are both advertising the same product on the same platforms etc
Hey man best video you’ve made right here I’m a small tech creator and you nailed everything would love to chat to for 10 mins to pick your brain on ideas

hell ya pat :)
9:21 been loving your stuff for over 4 years now Devin. I usually feel like most marketers are kinda dumb, but your analytical takes are always so refreshing.
What a delightful and unexpected crossover!
The criticism on the phrase content creation is valid. So many people in the gun content space that are completely soulless
It's definitely an interesting genre right now.
I'm a simple man. I see a new Devin Nash video posted and I sit, watch, learn, and become a better person, and streamer. Thank you Devin.
Started my RUclips channel a few years ago thanks to your work! Now I try and use that influence to benefit the speedrunning community by spreading awareness and promoting the positive aspects of our little community
Devin Nash always on the ball. Anyone can make content, providing value is more difficult but much more rewarding.

The Fear point was spot on. Thank you for having the courage to share it. I'm sure a lot of people feel the same. Insanely valuable as always 💯 ❤️

I think you worded it wrong at 11:30. Correctly: "There will never be a time where I will regret making valuable things"
I really love how you switch the language from content creation to story telling. It helps piece it better on what we should strive to do whenever creating something.
Appreciate the candor!! These videos are usually pretty insightful, glad your returning

I like this educational side of Content/Storytelling Creation- I’m hoping to apply what I learned here to my career goals and shiz
Hey Devin -- this was very life affirming to hear and I think a very healthy way to think about storytelling. Glad you're putting yourself out there again because I think you have a lot to offer the world.
the videos you had when you would bring people on and talk about there channel was really cool. # 9:21
As someone who always wanted to make content, researched and learned just about everything one would need and still haven't.
9:21 Club 😎
Love your content Nash, it's always insightful

Good to see you back around here Devin.

I stumbled on your channel a few years back when I started uploading to RUclips.
Really cool video and 100% thought provoking glad you back and can't wait to catch the live streams
Thank you!
9:21 glad to have you back - you've been missed! most valuable, thoughtful, non bs content on YT
9:21 always appreciate your insights, no matter how rare they are. Love me a Devin Nash upload.
Take care and stay strong.
appreciate your insight as always, this is a good push for people like myself in limbo between streaming & creating permanence.
I really needed to hear this.
This is up there with your best videos, if not THE best.
Found your work this week, love your education style man.
Exactly this! A person speaking sincerely. Nothing beats that. Ever.
Stay on top, bro. I'll stick around
I liked this style of content so much that I subscribed!

9:21 this video's provided great perspective for me as I feel a little weird along my 'creator' journey. Thanks for being you!
Here are some suggestions for future content:
-Please Do a collab with Dan Koe.
Ha!
Story telling sounds like it could be a lie while content sounds like it has Value, so not sure
Literally sounds like the opposite lol
More than happy to have you back. I am a very small german streamer, but ur videos always make me think big. Thank you!
I don't usually feel the need to comment, but I'm really excited you're coming back to making stuff more regularly! I've learned a lot from your insights into the industry and can't wait to see more.
Definitely something that needed to be said, thank you for being the one to say it.
Been watching for a few years man, glad to see you back.
9:42 Welcome back 🤝
Thank you Devin! So honest and straightforward I love it
Exorcist about no regrets about created valuable products
@Devin Nash
You're two things
1. You're in gaming space
2. You're in the businesses/marketing space
That alone makes for interesting listening in people who have their toes in both....
That's why I end up listening to most of your videos...
9:21 love hearing how you think
No matter what I do in life I will always have storytelling, and I will always strive to do better.
I’m a rapper and content creator and ur videos have been helping me for years. Love u Dev
been watching since 2019. Love the advice always devin
started uploading regularly to YT about 4 years ago. Def took a lot of inspiration from Devin. Now I've got over 2k subs!
I have also always hated the term "content creator" makes me sick to even think about. Thanks for the videos brother.
I love the perspective!
Missed your videos. I’d like to see a conversation between you and Colin and Samir. Excuse me while I go tell them the same thing..
9 minutes 21 seconds - you're an exceptional creator regardless of how much you deny it
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
great video. thank you for sharing
A very Zen breakdown indeed. Good points well made.
Hey man best video you’ve made right here I’m a small tech creator and you nailed everything would love to chat to for 10 mins to pick your brain on ideas
What a fantastic video this is. Very inspiring.
Very nice perspective, I like the term story telling :3
parasocial relationships are definitely scary. hope you're doing well Devin! take care of yourself
