    This performance was on the Andy Williams Show, which was a tv show. Andy Williams was the guy who interviewed them at the start. He was a huge star as a vocalist in his own right. There's another clip from this show with him and the Righteous Brothers together singing a trio. So the weird venue is actually a tv sound stage, a theater-in-the-round set-up, with the audience seated on all sides. And it was broadcast live. Both of the Brothers - Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield - sang, with some of the best harmonies ever. They also each did their own solo songs. You definitely need to hear the two of them together.

  • @TheHummingbirder

    At that time, not much was made of plastic. The microphones were made of metal, which made them heavy. Just prior to this, people would sing at mounted microphones because they were too heavy to carry around the stage. The smaller metal microphone could be carried around on the stage and gave the artist freedom to move his or her body.
    There were a lot of TV shows in the 60s and 70s that featured musical artists as guests. They were generally called variety shows, and there were usually a few skits besides the music. Andy Williams, Dean Martin, Sonny and Cher, and Carol Burnette were all popular shows with this format.
    If you really want your mind blown, react to Bobby Hatfield singing "Summertime" live.

Before MTV, VH1, before official videos....there were a lot of variety shows on television where singers, entertainers, etc. performed live before an audience. Untouched, no gimmicks, just pure talent and entertainment. This particular performance was on the Andy Williams show. And believe it or not, Bobby (the one singing) was nervous about this performance because his parents were in the audience.

    Room-temp butter sure is smooth and doesn't tear up soft bread at all. I liken his voice to warm honey. His singing style is so effortless, as you say; the beat reminds me of the TIME concept in the song -- a bass plunk and the quicker tap-tap-tap of the snare sound like a clock's workings -- "time can do so much."

      @@d.f.6204 Actually, the coin toss never happened. It was always Bobby's solo; he had been singing it for years. And, he brought it to the studio to record.

    • @barbaral8973
      @barbaral8973 Год назад +2

      @@Aurora-tp3dy Indeed. Bobby had that song in his pocket before he and Bill teamed up. Because of the high notes Bill would never have been able to perform it to perfection, because the beauty of the song rests in the high notes. Lowering it to accommodate Bill's deep tenor wouldn't do the song justice.

    • @Aurora-tp3dy
      @Aurora-tp3dy Год назад +3

      @@barbaral8973 You are so right. He knew that song inside out and backwards. The only thing I would add is that Bill's voice type is bass-baritone while Bobby is a countertenor. They sort of met "in the middle" because Bobby could go down and Bill could go up. Of course, Bobby probably could harmonize with a rock...he was the master. Bill sang background vocals on the record, but he's virtually inaudible. Guess I said more than 1 thing.😁

    • @barbaral8973
      @barbaral8973 Год назад +2

      @@Aurora-tp3dy I love it, "Harmonizing with a rock". Yes, he was that talented. Though Bill was good on his own, Bobby made him sound better; also vice versa.
      I've said it a number of times, there should be a quality documentary on Bobby and Bill. Something along the lines of "Unsung". Bill's book was a real disappointment to me.

    You asked what show this was on, it was "the Andy Williams Show,Andy Williamrrs" I am 72 years old and I saw it! By the way, Andy Williams was a popular singer in his own right! He had a smooth voice and cut many albums as well as had this show... I noticed he joked about another popular singer named Tony Bennett who cut a hit called "I left my heart in San Francisco.' another great song.... Andy Williams was known for a song written by popular song writer, Henry Mancini called "Moon River."
    The Righteous Brothers would've considered it to be on honor to be invited to sing on this show!! FYI!! I will also add that the Righteous Brothers are known for singing alone (check out also Bill Medley singing "Brown Eyed Woman," and "The Time of My Life" alone without Bobby Hatfield. They did plenty of duets together like " Soul and Inspirational,' and "Little Latin Lupie Lu." You'll see more comments on their duets that were popular
    "In our days" I'm sure!!😘 By the way, I'm Rose not my brother, Timothy!! 🌹😁

    He told you in the interview at the beginning that he sings this song by himself. But his "brother," Bill (they're not really brothers, they're Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield), sing together on several of their biggest hits. You MUST listen to them together on their breakout hit, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," and "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration." They're the ones for whom the term "Blue Eyed Soul" was first used.

    Smooth, yes. To say the least! This was filmed live before a live studio audience. This was a solo. His partner was not his brother but their harmonies are legendary as Bobby ( here) was the high and Bill was the deep baritone; he also did solos. But together, magic! They were given their name by a group of black soldiers who appreciated their soul sound, telling them they were singing rightous. The song came out in 1965 during the Vietnam War, and it epitomized the longing for loved ones. Bobby's complete control and amazing vocals performed live with nothing but talent is considered still one of the best live performances. It was perfect. As good as the studio recording on the album. Another incredible talent lost to drugs. You MUST hear one of their songs where they sing together. PLEASE do "You've lost that Loving feeling"!!!
