  • If you told me I would have quit the career I chased my whole life to focus on mental health, I would've laughed at your face. I'm literally the most risk averse person I know!
In this video I unpack my own journey and coming to terms with quitting my job - why I made the decision, how I made the decision, and what things folks should think about if they are pondering making the same leap. Remember that no matter where you are in your journey, you always have a choice, even if the space to make the choice is minimal!

I’ve come to accept that I cannot work somewhere long term. Like those people who are like “I’ve been working here for 23 years” … That will never be me. I have chronic depression and a job easily triggers my mental health issues to get worse. A bad job means I will go from having no anxiety symptoms to having severe anxiety that lingers even after I had quit and got therapy.
Update: I did k3tamin3 assisted talk therapy for the anxiety. Also IV k3t for depression. It worked. Now I work remote in IT. I get paid more and less stress. Thank god!

@UdoADHD Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this post. As excruciatingly painful as the pandemic was (and still is), it forced me to reflect. I realize that all the jobs that I had were worsening/triggering my anxiety. However, I was too afraid to acknowledge it before because being employed, even if the job is toxic, is what everyone else expected of me. However, none of these same people were asking about my mental health.
When I did mention that my job was affecting me negatively, I was told "just look for another job but don't leave your job before you've found another one". However, I was so drained after work and on weekends, this was nearly impossible. 2020 was the first time I had the courage to prioritize my mental health and surround myself with more pveople that understand that. Thanks again for posting.

I put in my notice last week. It was one of the scariest things I’ve done as my work ethic has always been strong since I was a teen. It’s been affecting my mental health for a while and I tried to power through and hoped things would get better as I looked for work but then it escalated to physical issues. So I resigned. Everything you felt in this video was what I was going through. Funny thing is within 24 hours of my notice they found 3 people to divide my workload between. I had been telling them it was too much for months and was ignored. My takeaway is “Choose you.” These jobs really dgaf and will use you up as long as you let them.

Oh boy for how much? $60k and no benefit? they put my on salary but I was expected to work 40 hours a week. They would not allow me to even work 1 freaking day from home. 60% of the time at work I had nothing to do and drove me crazy. I just now realized that my company doesn’t care about my mental health. I applied, and was approved, for medical leave by the state of Washington. I am now on leave since last week and receiving 90% of my salary. I appreciate you pointing out the importance of mental health. I wouldn’t have considered that an option. I’m feeling hopeful now that I’m in a position to focus on my mental health. Doctor, Psychiatrist, and counseling are helping. And I’m grateful that I do not have to worry about money at the same time. I hope others have the same opportunity. Thanks Julian!

I left my 10 year career earlier this month. It was 3 years prior that i made the decision because i was already mentally unhealthy. It was a high stress job and I knew I would eventually leave no matter how many therapists I saw or how many different ways they approached resolving or relieving my mental health and stress. When I finally left, I felt this burden off my shoulders, it was 10 years of my life being stressed. No matter how many resources my employer offered, was it worth staying for stress year around? Nope, I was out. Now I'm looking into a career change while relaxing at the same time too. Make major shift and changes in your life, stress is not worth it.

I finally got a good paying job for the first time in my life at age 39. Within that year my parents had passed (my dad of a heart attack, my mom slowly died of ovarian cancer) and my girlfriend got thyroid cancer at the same time my mom found out about her's. After I lost my mom I became insanely depressed and once my girlfriend completed her radiation therapy she kicked me out.
I became super depressed, started over eating, quit associating with people, and just didn't care at all about making money. I eventually quit my job to focus on myself and started to get better, however, since I quit that job in the same year it's been a HUGE mark on my resume and I can't seem to get any job offers higher than 16 an hour.
They won't take me back and nobody will hire me and I feel myself slipping right back into depression and it's a huge fight.

HI Julian, thanks for your video, I was in a pediatrics residency during the COVID pandemic (2019-2022) and I reached a point of burn out in the end where my body instinctively was repulsive and would move away every time it saw a computer. It was just alot of burn out and loneliness, isolation, I didn't finish and got really sick actually and had to quit. I am so happy now that I have my peace and happiness and I am with my family and healthy now.

I've been in multiple toxic work place situations in my career which has been soul sucking experiences, this is what I felt through my experience:
    1. Inexperienced leadership ruins everything, company which gives leadership roles by only seeing Tier 1 college names.
    2. Micromanagement is the ultimate reason to be called as toxic work place.
    3. Never work in any place just for money, they don't own you. They pay you for your time, that doesn't mean you should be working 24*7.
    4. Your physical and mental wellbeing should be the top priority, protect them at all cost. The moment you feel it's taking a hit, you should realize work place is toxic.
    5. Work in a place which let's your creativity thrive, not the one which diminishes it.

Thank you for your video! No one ever points out mental health. I have worked at my job for six years, straight through the pandemic until now. With only two vacation times out of those years it's still a headache to get time off approved. Even with my problems with my child and my brother passing away. My Boss still expected me to come into work. I was furious. Now it's been five months later, I am exhausted, overworked, and stressed out more and more often. I have finally decided to change my career path all together, less pay but a much more healthier mentality and somewhere people actually appreciate the work I do. Thanks again! I hit that SUBSCRIBE FOR YOU ❤️

Thank you for this video. I am quitting my job today. Like yourself, I am privileged to have financial resources behind me to provide some support. It has been 1.5 years of me mulling over this situation, bouncing from project to project, job to job - making excuses externally about why things weren't working out. I don't have a clear path or clear back-up plan in front of me. I never had the energy or passion to even consider an alternate path or "side-hustle". The feeling of uncertainty is terrifying but is something I must face.

I just made a similar decision to quit, go back to school for a masters, and make a large career transition. I allowed pressure from others put me on course for my current career when I was 15 years old. Now 15 years later despite being very successful and having very clear paths towards continued career progression, what I was doing was getting too far away from my core skillset. I was a software engineer who was invented into a business management employee based on what my company needed me to be. Like you said in the video, I started to realize the source of my dread and anxiety was knowing that the future I wanted wasn't aligned with the path my career had me on. Submitting my resignation was one of the most freeing things I've ever done in my life, and my mental health and happiness levels are worlds different since. I'm still not where I want to be yet, but I have a newfound level of self assurance I haven't felt in years.

Especially on the part where you said that you have tried doing things for your mental health (see therapist, setting boundaries) - after all these things, it really came to the conclusion that it really was the job all along that was causing the mental health problems.

Coworkers not treating me fairly or nice. I need to focus on my mental health and my anxiety to get better. This gave me the courage to walk out if I need to without any notice. Thank you!

I remember first coming across your mental health content on TT and am delighted you have a yt channel that extends into these topics further…
A lot of the points you made in this video really resonated with me; I left my job earlier this year when I hit a rock bottom on my life and realized that I couldn’t continue on in my job anymore in order to literally preserve my own life. I never thought I would have the courage either but I did, you did and now both of us (plus a whole slew of people out there) have left unfulfilling roles in lieu of something new and I hope it’s been a good experience for everyone involved. It doesn’t come without my own personal challenges but I’m glad I took the plunge to try something new.
Thanks for the videos! Hope you’re going well!

It is great to see your video opening up your mind, whch really reminds me of my law school years...always getting C, D...not getting internship...peer pressure...but I somehow managed to become qualified although on a low end salary (for low grade student). I enjoyed my legal practice much more than law school, and fast forward 10 years + I now set up my own law firm. I think your Harvard education spoke enough of your intelligence, hence maybe one day after a while, you can try different practice (if big corporate clients not suitable then try some individual client practice like personal injury litigation)...maybe one thing will suddenly lit up your mind and you found back the passion. Looking back and only speak for myself, I am glad I somehow passed through law school although I did indeed apply to transfer to other faculty quite a few times...for someone, jump gun does not mean relief but makes it even harder for you to look back and swallow the failure...so if you somehow can find an area of practice that can spark your mind, that would be a wonderful way to conclude your career and finally conquer the mental health issue. All the best.

Thank you very much for this video. I have been been stuck in my Job for 8 years and it has truly become unbearable for me to go through another day. I check all the boxes that you mentioned in your video basically. I even stay up late every night because I don't want to sleep and start the new Business day. Sunday afternoons are the worst where all the worries about work start seeping into my head. I have become "Mentally Allergic" to the notification sounds of Skype, Teams, Zoom, etc; I hate that amber hue behind the Outlook Icon ushering in a new Email or a meeting reminder... Maybe it is time for me to take that leap of faith, luckily I have been working on a plan B for some time now. Thanks again wish you all the best.

I have lost the enthusiasm of looking forward to the next opportunity. I thought of taking leave of absence or taking a career break altogether to get my head straight. One downside to this is I am a foreign national on a work visa and if I were to quit my job, I would have to leave the country or things with immigration would get really messy. Hopefully, changing my job, industry, and environment will help turn things around for me. One day at a time.

Julian thks for so many specific ideas that are helpful when going through a job transition. I am also working on my physical and mental health by making protein fruit smoothies and oatmeal several mornings a week, using the Calm app for meditations, and looking for new opportunities that are a better match for me at this time. I want to work where I experience less anxiety, than in my current roles in

Yesterday marked my last day in this capacity. I can relate to your situation so well right now. I know I should be incredibly grateful for the job I have but I have begun to realise that my mood on the days I have to work is far more irritable and depressed than on the days when I have some time off. I am prone to depression and besides irritability and sadness, the next step of depression - for me - is to start fantasizing about d*eath. As a ticket out of all my misery. I am not there yet but I do see my brain trying to take me along on that path. I am mindful enough (now) to stop it from taking me there but soon I won't be. I hope I quit before I become weak.
