I finally got to see the entire game. I did not get to see it when it was orginally aired, this is the first time I have viewed it. Thurl Bailey played a great game. But as it was with the Wolfpack during that run to the National championship, the game came down to the wire and UNLV could not hit freethrows. Valvano used the opponents not making their freethows as a great advantage and did a magnificiant coaching job. Thanks for posting.
It's so funny because I somewhat remember watching this game back in the day but UNLV blew this game. The irony because Grote mentioned during the broadcast just after I said this out loud during my rewatch. Anderson hits the shot which puts UNLV up 10, Anderson gets the steal, he misses the layup and then Hudson misses subsequent easy shot after easy shot. Hudson should have just come down with the ball and squared his feet. At worst he probably draws a foul against Bailey. It didn't happen but what did happen on the other end was a blatant missed charged call on Sidney Lowe after being down 54-46, which would have been his 5th. This is where the game totally changed regardless of the missed free throws. The 82-83 tournament was both the coolest and the dumbest thing I've ever witnessed. N.C State should have probably gotten beaten by Pepperdine. Most definitely should have gotten beaten by UNLV. Then there's the Elite 8 game against UVA. Back in the day as an almost 12-year-old I was not happy with the end result. Knowing what we know and the short life that Jimmy V had on this planet, I feel a bit different about it all. I'm happy with the end result. Having said that, this team won the tournament but was in no way the best team.
Absolutely the craziest thing in sports how NC St fouled every team at end of games and somehow won all the games to the 1983 title. This one made me ill as UNLV was better and had this game.
+Kelly Baranick UNLV had the better talent but not the best team, team is 5 players playing together to their strengths and thru their weaknesses, UNLV choked when things got tight but with good teamwork NCSU forged ahead and won with great teamwork
Ritchie Adams failed in his attempts at playing pro ball. He returned to NY and got caught up in gang life. I believe he is serving a life sentence in prison for murder. Another outstanding citizen recruited by Tarkanian.
@@charliezelenoffastroburger322 what's Chris Washburn up to these days? Didn't Valvano take chances on some questionable characters at NCSU? People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones
@@danmyers9372 You don't know what you are talking about. He wasn't in no gang asshole. He was accused of a murder which he probably didn't do but convicted. He is alive and well and NOT in jail. People like you is why it's hard for black men. Another fine citizen! You are a jerk!
The big difference in this game was the coaches, Valvano was an amazing coach and such an inspiring person. Tark was totally overrated. He succeeded by getting great athletes by cheating at recruiting. His on court success was due to superior talent and really good assistants. He had the personality of a dead fish. I live in Fresno and saw him regularly at a local Japanese restaurant when he coached Fresno State. He used to come in with an entourage and hold court most every day at lunch (It was eventually discovered that the restaurant was giving free meals to student athletes). Tark wouldn’t give anyone the time of day unless you were a booster with big money. He destroyed the BB programs at both UNLV and Fresno State and neither has ever recovered anywhere near their prior levels. I was stunned back then when UNLV lost to NC State but today I think it is one of the most awesome genes ever!
Is there any way I can get this game for myself on DVD? Would love to have this game. Have several Wolfpack games from '83 and would love to add this and others to collection.
Richard Finch - No doubt about that. That’s the difference a coach can make. Houston’s on court talent was 10x better than NC State. NC State had Valvano as their leader. Houston? They had Guy Lewis whom many joked ran practices by rolling the ball out onto the court to his players.
@@danmyers9372 no, NCSU got hot at the right time. If I recall correctly, didn't NCSU have 10 losses and had to win the ACC tournament to get the automatic bid into the NCAA Tourney in 1982-83? Everyone is saying how great of a coach Valvano is, but he lots of talent after the championship run (Washburn, Corchiani, etc.) and won nothing.
UNLV free throws last 3 min. Danny tark misses front of one on one, booker, and Hudson do also. Anderson and Booker miss back ends of 2 free throws. 8 points blown and Vegas looses by 1. Unreal. If 2 free throws given after ten fouls like rules are now this upset does not happen and NC State does not win title.
If UNLV had made one of those free throws, who wins the '83 tourney if NC State went out here? I don't think UNLV loses to Utah, but what happens if they face Virginia? And then what of them or Georgia against Phi Slamma Jamma?
Chris Kreager UNLV had decent talent in 1983, but not overwhelming. They could have played with anyone but Houston at their best. So they could have gone to title game, or could have lost along the way. All I know is UNLV choked vs NC St. and NC St never would have won in 1983 had the 2 free throws after 10 foul rule been active then.
Why do you think they added the 10 fouls 2 shots rule? Coaches use the rules they are given to their advantage as best they can. Valvono just did it better than any other coach in 83. Other teams could have utilized the fouling strategy as well and maybe a few did, but none used it as well as NC State.

Alot of 2 pt’ers should’ve been 3 pt’ers and NC State dont have so many close games in ‘83
You know Valvano is giving Tarkanian grief about this game in heaven right now. :)
Even on replay, I can’t believe NC State keeps winning these games at the end.
The officials and their duties: Edgar Cartotto, referee; Bobby Dibler, left linesman; Jack Hannan, right linesman.
Thank you for posting. Haven't seen this in 30 years!
Can you please upload N.C State vs utah in the West regional semi final
You're welcome!!!!! Great to see games that brings back very good memories, doesn't it?
