'90 Vegas, to me personally, is still the best national champion of the 64-team era because of the level of play they displayed during their postseason run along with their ridiculously talented lineup all the way 1-5! Add in their depth as well, which ended up being one of their undoings in defense of their title! Everybody talks about how great they were the following season but honestly without David Butler and Moses Scurry (the '90 team's glue guys and energy) they lacked those very things in '91 they could have used down the stretch in the Duke loss, especially when Anthony fouled out!
In a way the 1991 Duke semifinal was a repeat of the 1990 Georgia semifinal. In that game Larry Johnson fouled out but Butler and Scurry helped hold the fort down the stretch. Depth comes down to quality, not quantity. Scurry was the only impact player off the bench for UNLV in 1990 but that's all they needed.
And to think, just a year later, Ohio State was right up there in the polls with UNLV. OSU was ranked #2 behind UNLV for a month Jim Jackson and the Buckeyes grew up big time the next year.
Nothing like responding to a four year old comment. Those Buckeye teams where so damn frustrating though because they where so talented. Baker and Brown each where very talented, but once a game each would go off script for a few minutes and either force stupid shots or turnovers. Then Carter and Treg Lee both big bodied forces in the paint, couldnt hit a free throw to save their lives.
Yep and let's not forget next year when they whipped the fab 5 twice in the regular season only to choke away a shot at the final 4. Never forget Jent missing that 5 footer to win it at the end of regulation
If the AD at UNLV actually supported Tarkanian imagine how history would be different! Think about the rivalry Duke and the Rebels could’ve had! As a huge rebel fan it breaks my heart.
I loved when Tark won the national championship so he could use that trophy to throw serious shade at anyone who tried or had tried crossing him! It was poetic justice! No only that, but those same crossers had to watch the greatest team in the 39 years I've been watching college basketball throw egg in their collective faces with every dominating win! The NCAA has always been at it's hypocritical best when it involves the blame game! And the one time I thought they'd do their appropriate job they proved their ultimate in crooked when they let the Tar Holes off the hook from the academic cheating scandal! It was the definition of favoritism and partiality
I'm a die-hard Duke fan and that night - April 2nd, 1990 - was the worst case of whiplash I ever suffered watching a game (my senior year of HS)! 1990 UNLV was the best one-season national champion in the history of the tournament! Their performance would have beaten any team from any era! It was the definition of a clinic
That 90 team is best ever it's a dam shame the got rid of tark he never had the top recruits in country until he won national championship an the 92 went 28 an 2 but was banned from post season had they not fired him he had the O'Bannon brothers who won a national championship an UCLA a couple years later .I watched a recent interview with his son said had they keep him he believed with the top recruits coming to unlv his dad would have coached til at least 2005 an coulda won 6 plus more titles said as much as he loved unlv he believed he would have coached till he was a 80 an then. Itwoulda rightful been turned over to tim gurgirich who was the man that trained them great teams only silver lining is only violations that were ever proved were a couple unpaid long distance calls which both together totaled less than a dollar.nuthin else was ever proved an the ncca had to pay Jerry tark 1,5 million dollars as punitive damage
Well at least a tougher game than Duke or Loyola did......3rd toughest game behind #2) GT in the FF4 and 1) Ball state in the next game UNLV would play.
UNLV has been a symbolism of mediocrity since Jerry Tarkanian had left same is true for INDIANA during the post Bob Knight era it shows how great unappreciated that both Tarkanian and Knight were as Head Coaches and Teachers
Different perspectives. Tark always had a cloud over him. Knight just intimidated the refs to win games. You can just get that level of coach to do that only Duke has something similar in Coach K.
@@WUDAT Knight intimidated the refs to win games, my gosh you are an ignorant sort of fellow, aren't you? This is the coach - Knight - who got screwed out of at least one national title (1992) by the refs alone (Teddy Valentine).
UNLV was never the same when Tarkanian left just goes to show how great of a coach he was.
Love it when teams get baited in to running with rebels
That Jim Jackson dunk was pretty sweet

Would have loved to see them against 96 Kentucky
@@jeffreyzeigler2273 unlv would send them home crying to their mommies
Don't forget that guard from Europe. He backed up Anthony at a high level

The big ten was no joke back then. 88 thru 92 two big ten teams in the final four
Greg Anthony needs to be AD for Unlv program
A much better style of coverage then than the way it is today with four networks (CBS, TBS, TNT, and TruTV).
yes because who wants to choose between four games when there is only one. dope
SocialAssasin lol. Nice.......

He was treated just as underminingly lousy as Jim Valvano was at NC State!

Mike Francesca?!? LOL?
They laid out the starting line up.go rebels 😮😎😎
Ohio St end up giving them all they could handle ...to much STACY Augmon in the 2nd half
Ohio state turned the ball over every damn possession
Ohio State gave them a game

1 seed vs 8 seed
Dave Rice was a Jerry Tarkanian wannabe was not even half the UNLV Head Coach that Tarkanian was
