      Their first 3 games they were down by like 6 points with minutes to go and were bailed out by the 1 and 1 free throw rule. They'd just foul and the other team would miss the first free throw every time.

      Back then the 1st round West Region late games started at 10:30 PM CT. Pepperdine vs NC State was the late Fri night game. I stuck with game in 2nd half even though it seemed like Pepperdine had game clinched. But late missed free throws due to Valvano's foul strategy and somehow NC State escaped in Double OT.

We were at his house watching this game and there was this other teenager there that I think was a neighbor or someone who worked for my Uncle and I can remember before the game started all the smack he was talking saying NCST didn't have a chance and that Houston was going to crush them, yada, yada. He got real quiet as the game went on and then that last second dunk by Lorenzo Charles shut his trap for good! lol...

    If I could pick one center for my team it would have to be Hakeem, Sorry Russ and Wilt. BUT he would have to get control of his emotions and temper first. It's very rare to have a center, or a player that could do all of the things he could do. The only thing he didn't do was bring the ball up. But with more experience he could probably have done that too!

    Still the biggest upset in men's NCAA basketball history. Someone I knew back then who handled a book said the mere 7.5 point spread to Houston's favor was manufactured because a true spread of closer to 12 or 14 would have had too much money being placed on NC State. They had to do something to balance out the wagering. But, I will agree with many who have said a shot clock back then would have worked heavily to the advantage of Houston. But, then again, you didn't have the 3 point shot which appears would have favored NC State, especially late in the second half. Just a great game!

I was pulling for the Orange that night (my freshman year in HS), but they were their own worst enemy! The charity stripe did them in just as it did Houston in '83! Valvano was a master planner - he knew Houston was the worst FT shooting team in the tournament field and once Houston slowed the tempo to gather themselves they played right into State's and Jimmy V's hands - Phi Slama Jama ended up missing their last six FT's down the stretch and it cost them more dearly than when they stopped running midway thru the second half

    I still can’t believe the choke job from Houston. Nevertheless it was Alonso who was Johnny on the spot!!

    There was 2 seconds left, why did they just end the game?

    • @GeorgeWolfeIV-ir6de
      @GeorgeWolfeIV-ir6de Год назад +1

      Because, the clock was running and Houston tried to call timeout before the clock hits zero, but it didn’t matter.

    Growing up in inner city Houston, I’d see these guys just hooping at the park. I was at almost every game at Hofheinz Pavilion that year. This still pisses me off. I’ve never gotten over this

    What’s ironic is that this team (that barely made the NCAA tournament) would be a #1 seed in 2022.

    With this being the 40th anniversary, who wants to bet the NCAA puts NC State in an 8-9 game in the same regional with Houston?
