  • The business secretary faced repeated criticism from Tory MPs in the Commons over fracking, particularly over what was meant by Liz Truss's promise that drilling would only go ahead with approval from local communities.

Rees-Mogg refused to promise that residents would get to vote on whether projects should go ahead. Instead he repeatedly said it would be up to fracking companies to come up with plans that would be welcomed by residents. He said these should involve people being compensated financially for the inconvenience they would face.

Recently, you just need to look at his predictions prior to Brexit and linked to that about the NI protocol and also freedom of movement. No queues at Dover, if I remember correctly. He is normally wrong on every major prediction and policy. Why people continue to support him is totally beyond me. @@daz97 An emotive argument; But there is _No_ evidence to support your claim that _fracking_ is the answer to the problem of high gas prices. A British Geological Survey peer-reviewed paper (released in 2019) said that it would take 3 years to produce less than 1% of UK demand if fracking was resumed. On top of that, any gas produced would not reduce gas prices for the consumer because the price for gas is set by the international market price and UK shale gas would largely be for export.
The Government has delayed publication of a 2022 review by the British Geological Survey (carried out for the Government) into the scientific evidence around fracking for shale gas......I wonder why? Could it be that it shows fracking is not the answer?
I don't want anyone to freeze to death, including my own family as I am not wealthy either. Here's some practical advice to help you save some money, change a couple of settings on your mum's boiler to reduce the heating “flow temperature” and turn off hot water “pre-heating”, this will save her at least £250 a year. And the Government need to set a more affordable price cap for this winter, paid for by extra tax from oil and gas companies, not a loan to us that we will have to pay back with higher bills.
In the long term, insulating homes across the UK and investing sustainable energy has far more potential to provide more energy at lower cost for the the future, than the geologically unstable practice of fracking that will only increase profits for gas companies.
