And there was much rejoicing."
it's kinda funny to me how many pokemon survive in OU exclusively because so many of the good ou mons have speed as a dump stat. so all the swords dancers, victreebel, poliwrath, etc all manage to carve out a niche off of 60-80 being just enough to outrun eggy and maybe cloyster and then you go down a tier and they absolutely cannot cut it where the opponent isn't likely to have 3 mons with a speed stat below 60
"Gansta SpongeBob" and RBY PU were not two phrases I'd ever expect would make sense together in a million years, yet here we are. Good Vid as always man.
Ok I gotta do an algorithm for this because those tiny sprite changes you do to the Pokemon as you talk about them give me fucking life. It adds so much life to each scene! Just seeing Clefable reacting to Wigglytuff is hilarious.
Victreebel falling to nu and doing poorly is a great example of how I sort of address people complaining about things in gen 9 dropping to a tier. If a mon in a lower tier can do well in a higher tier, the reverse can happen. For me it was funny when ttar dropped to ru for a few months and people were like "how could this happen" meanwhile everything in uu and ou had some tech to beat tyrantitar
I sort of dislike usage based tiers to an extent as there's lots of things in gen 9 like, rby that can do things in higher tiers but because they're lower tiered you get a lot of flac for using them
Yeah I see a lot of people parroting this shock factor thing where it's like "Can you BELIEVE this pokemon dropped a tier/rose to ubers!?! Ugh balance is out the window nowadays" when that's willingly misreading the situation entirely.
As the guy who got the RBY community invested in lower tiers during Pokemon Perfect's prime, I'm so happy that the RBY lower tiers continue seeing active play and development to this day. These tiers are awesome and I love seeing it! They're naturally much more dynamic than OU in how they develop and it's super exciting to see it evolve and what these metas are like now.
When you say "as the guy who got the RBY community invested in lower tiers", are you talking about big yellow? If you're talking about yourself, it sounds like you got a bit of an ego.
i gotta say, the editing in these videos is some of the best ever imo. The jokes are actually very funny and unobtrusive on top of being perfectly paced; shit like 12 falling over with the nsmb dry bones noise is so silly and charming and CREATIVE, rather than a lot of video essays that just put the latest vine tiktok skibidi rizz boom meme of the week over everything. Genuinely makes me enjoy these videos even more. Also you're slaying as always but we been knew
Just discovered Big Yellow last night and have been straight BINGING this ish -- awesome content, Big Yellow is super knowledgeable and explains interesting concepts in an accessible way! ...Also just landed on this video and the GLOW UP IS FABULOUS!!
It is like these games are that influential that they are still being played in some form even till this day. Imagine if stadium had online multiplayer or a whole remake of stadium 1 that had it and modern visuals. It would be the definitive way to play it. I was wanting to make a stadium 3 (based on colosseum/xd or gen 3's mechanics) that it can be a part of. Like a side mode if combined. Also anything with raichu in it is an instant like for me.
the ad fakeout hit me good. it gets me every time. i go "no way big yellow is doing a sponsorship" and then i get slapped in the face for even assuming it could happen
Me and my hyperautism noticing how you use some sprites from the 1997 gold and silver prototype for the little sprite edits sometimes. They're almost never talked about because the unused gen 2 mons overshadow them, but I find it so interesting how there's so many previously undiscovered official gen 1 styled sprites in that prototype
This is genuinely an extremely cool subject, and I love that as with the NU-BL tier list, your videos serve as important archival information about this game and prevent the development of these communities from becoming lost media!
Another absolute banger from the patron saint of "RUclipsrs I watch while I eat". Got 2 awesome meals + dessert out of this one and it was KINO. Can't wait for the upcoming OU video, keep up the amazing work, Big Yellow!
In the intro BigYellow mentions developing metas in old games and it made me think of Starcraft Broodwar. No balance patch since 2001 and the meta is still shifting! Builds are getting typically greedier over time. Protoss and Terran wall in and take a very early expansion which is making Zerg wanna sprinkle in early attack builds. And in PvT P expands to a 4th and 5th very quickly which is bringing down T's 4th expand timing from 12 to 10 mins to compensate for the extra greed. All very fun stuff.
Victreebel is just the incarnation of the “its over we are so back its so ever we are so back” meme cuz that thing is currently OU once again despite falling to NU.
Something I absolutely love about your videos that I feel people don't talk about enough is how amazing your editing is, specifically with your editing the Pokemon sprites to give them expressions. Any time I watch one of your old videos I STILL laugh at "kinda downcast Ivysaur", and that's no exception here. Absolutely love it.
Blanket statement for any/all of your RBY videos really, but I am mad jealous of how strong your nickname game is, like dang why can't I be that clever
Okay, so I used Clefable pretty extensively during the RoA spotlight earlier this year and managed to climb to top 50 on the ladder. You're very much right, Clefable is kinda like Dragonite. The first thing to note is that Dragonite's Attack stat of 366 sounds good, but Clefable's Attack stat while using Normal moves is effectively 357 thanks to STAB. Dragonite doesn't learn any non-Normal physical attacks in RBY, so its sky-high Attack stat in practice leaves it outmatched by Raticate. What makes Clefable most interesting is the fact that the only options it doesn't learn that it would want to are partial trapping, recovery, boom, offensive boosting moves, and the physical coverage of Earthquake and Rock Slide. Basically everything else is on the table. Because its standard set only really needs two moves, Body Slam and Thunder Wave, with Hyper Beam being recommended but non-essential, Clefable is a great glue pokemon because it can use its remaining moves to mess up anything that your team might be scared of facing. The sheer variety of Clefable's options can't be understated. It's honestly enough to make a video out of by itself. Thunderbolt, Thunder, Blizzard, Fire Blast, Psychic, Counter, Reflect, Light Screen, Rest, Mega Kick, Sing, Double-Edge, Bubble Beam, and Ice Beam. If you have a stupid idea for a set in RBY, UU Clefable is your best bet to make it work. It will still be a decent bulky paralysis spreader if you're not in a position to use these moves, and it's not a centralising gamepiece that you can't really afford to experiment with like it was in NU or the Mews are in Ubers. Some of my favourites include Light Screen/Fire Blast, which inverts the usually unfavourable Articuno matchup, and Thunderbolt/Psychic, which provides very strong coverage and prevents the tier's bulky Waters from Rest-looping it. I haven't tried Counter/Sing, but it sounds pretty delightful too. Clefable is just a really good earlygame Pokemon that can also carry some very stupid silver bullets. Sure, it's easily revenge-killed once it has low health or its moveset is revealed, and it's pretty passive and slow, but it's so funny and versatile. It's probably my favourite pokemon in any RBY metagame. I don't really have qualifications to cite in my support, I'm far from a veteran or expert in RBY, but I'd like to believe that I played at least a very small part in it rising to UU, because I did beat some fairly accomplished players on the ladder by making use of Clefable.
I really do like the edits of the RBY sprites, those facial expresions are such a nice little extra. Pidgeots loyal subject entering the frame gave me a good laugh.

Also your editing and animating of the sprites continues to improve o_o for example the Gyarados at 8:26 bro's whole mouth closes (this in combination with their sprite bobbing slightly or rotating or some other thing to add to the animation and personality, as well as just help people notice when their sprite changes is a really nice touch!)

2:23 the addition of Lifeweaver as the 152nd Pokemon retroactively was an interesting move, but one that I'm sure will bring unique and interesting changes to the metagame
this is a masterpiece of thumbnail design. It makes JUST enough sense to drag you in, but gets more confusing on a second glance, requiring a click
00:30 The funniest thing of this is that the poor bastard arguably isn't even a bug anymore once it evolves, just a mushroom-puppeteered corpse that could have been Grass/Ghost. (Great vid as always.)
The fake out sponsorship caught me as off guard as a Hoopa-unbound being hit by an Iron Treads Megahorn lol. I was just ready to skip over it, but after skipping 20 sec i realized you were still talking about pokemon, so I came back to it to hear the worlds shortest sponsorship segment just to get hit with the "No TF you don't". Truly outstanding, Gargantuan Yellow
Oh boy another Big Yellow video to rewatch like 8 times over the next month
Somehow RUclips has not recommended me a video of yours in about a year, but I have to say you are absolutely slaying these days
Gotta love how deep the memery goes with a name like Mike Haunt
Mike Haunt is multi layered istg
i love how you make the silliest mons sound so personable with the way you describe them & especially the editing. i havent thought about omanyte for more than 2 seconds of my life but now i would find genuine happiness if theyre allowed to be a little goofball and drop into ZU
Big Yellow 14:4-5:
"And lo the wise one Gangsta Spongebob said "Yo, Golbat, cut that shit out right now, I'm unilaterally banning Confuse Ray, we're done with that crap," and thus was it that Confuse Ray was banned and all who heard his words saw his wisdom and said that it was good that Confuse Ray was banned. And there was much rejoicing."
Yeah ...
🗣️🗣️🗣️
it's kinda funny to me how many pokemon survive in OU exclusively because so many of the good ou mons have speed as a dump stat. so all the swords dancers, victreebel, poliwrath, etc all manage to carve out a niche off of 60-80 being just enough to outrun eggy and maybe cloyster and then you go down a tier and they absolutely cannot cut it where the opponent isn't likely to have 3 mons with a speed stat below 60
"Gansta SpongeBob" and RBY PU were not two phrases I'd ever expect would make sense together in a million years, yet here we are. Good Vid as always man.
I can't believe Gangsta Spongebob called a wholeass hit on Confuse Ray in 7U
The words “rest tauros” elate me so
Rest Tauros?
@@bettyunicorn6132Tauros using the move rest
I sort of dislike usage based tiers to an extent as there's lots of things in gen 9 like, rby that can do things in higher tiers but because they're lower tiered you get a lot of flac for using them
Ngl I’m kinda sad TTar rose back to UU because it was honestly awesome to use in RU
Yeah I see a lot of people parroting this shock factor thing where it's like "Can you BELIEVE this pokemon dropped a tier/rose to ubers!?! Ugh balance is out the window nowadays" when that's willingly misreading the situation entirely.
@@greyscaleadaven yup like literally you can explain why something is in a tier by looking at the tier above
Alright Big Yell O., RBY is all well and good- Lego is a grand old time. But when, oh when, are you dropping that HAIR tutorial?!
Actually fabulous locks
it's SO fluffy
My day improved so much when I got a notification that Big Yellow uploaded. Your passion for RBY is great.
i gotta say, the editing in these videos is some of the best ever imo.
Straight? In this economy?
You have a virtuosic talent for editing RBY sprites to look miffed.
Also anything with raichu in it is an instant like for me.
your sprite edits are on POINT this video oh my god
I didn't think I needed sleep-deprived Haunter but I've seen it now & I have you to thank for it
the ad fakeout hit me good. it gets me every time. i go "no way big yellow is doing a sponsorship" and then i get slapped in the face for even assuming it could happen
"That is a bug!"
No, that is a fungus.
Oh my god i love the haunter holding the coffee cup and slowly falling asleep once you start talking about sleep being unbanned
12:44 - I can't believe you're telling Electrode to slow down! Next we'll be telling Alakazam to bulk up.
yooo new big yellow vid! can i just say, ive been enjoying your channel so much the past few months, and your overall glowup is unreal, gratz
also your editing is just so fuckin funny like it appeals directly to me
Another great video from Reverend's friend
I know i'm probably supposed to be thinking about the video
BUT HOLY SHIT YOU'RE SO PRETTY AND ADORABLE
The best part about a big yellow video (aside from the nails and hair) is all the silly sprite work
My boy Golem is slowly climbing back up to OU
This is Cinema folks
truly
hi there jimothy
Something I absolutely love about your videos that I feel people don't talk about enough is how amazing your editing is, specifically with your editing the Pokemon sprites to give them expressions. Any time I watch one of your old videos I STILL laugh at "kinda downcast Ivysaur", and that's no exception here. Absolutely love it.
The editing on these videos have gotten insane! The little animations add so much personality
Blanket statement for any/all of your RBY videos really, but I am mad jealous of how strong your nickname game is, like dang why can't I be that clever
The sheer enthusiasm, energy, and showmanship in this video is infectiously delightful
Excellent work as always, Big Yellow!
"It was banned cuz gangster SpongeBob said so" is a sentence i never thought I'd hear in my entire life
Okay, so I used Clefable pretty extensively during the RoA spotlight earlier this year and managed to climb to top 50 on the ladder.
I consider this channel the foremost authority on anything RBY
This might be my favorite video of yours when it comes to jokes. Overall a top 3 Big Yellow video for sure
maybe even... a big 3
@@BigYellowSillyTRUE!!
I really do like the edits of the RBY sprites, those facial expresions are such a nice little extra.
Pidgeots loyal subject entering the frame gave me a good laugh.
you talking about how new tech in unpatched games being so fun is probably why I enjoy following older mario kart’s competitively so much. the amount of technique in those which has been discovered ober the years is crazy. PRBs, Ultra Shorcuts, SSMTS, firehopping etc
FURTHER UPDATES: PUBD ended, and a suspect for Arcanine and Fearow were held. Neither received the banhammer however, as such they remain in PU
Omg. First it’s my friend’s birthday, then I get to play as aba, and then Soundsmith uploads, and I get to end the night with some primo yellow content!? Thank you so much oomfie you’ve made my day!!!! :D
Haunter.... WINNER!?!?!? LET'S GOOOOOO!!!!! (B1 -> A1 I'LL TAKE IT!)
I've always loved that Poliwrath sprite at 15:50, it's like they're a mon on a mission and they're the only one able to do it.
I'm 2 days late I feel like I'm scrambling into a theater trying to get seated before the show starts
I loved looking back through the 7u thread about this:
- Can we remove the sample teams with confuse ray since it's banned?
-Confuse ray isn't banned. Also Gangster Spongebob is in charge now, i'm busy and don't play.
"Confuse Ray is banned"
I'm loving these looks at lower tiers of rby! Excited for shifts in OU video!
You look really nice today btw :)
Fun fact: Sandslash is PU in gen 9 and ZU in gen 1. It's actually on the rise.
and on the 8th day, the lord said: fuck confuse ray
