And an update for any new viewers: this farm still works well. But, since Sunken Sea update, there' been no need for growing the shared backbone. Just as long as every root stump is able to grow in two places (columns either side of it) that's as fast as it can go, now. Makes it a bit easier.
I did this, but it only grows to the right side of the first seed and 1 growth to the left , i waited 2 hours and nothing, but only grows full to the right side.

Torches, floors, boosting crafting skill, tools need it, chests too. A lot of benches etc etc. :p
im always running out of wood lol
