To anyone reading this, make sure you dry the ear pads for literally days to be 100% dry, like dryer than to the touch. More dry than you've ever thought of something as dry. You can't really tell but if there's _any_ moisture in there, it can condense inside the cups and cause issues with the microphone or other circuitry which manifests as a high pitched buzzing sound. Probably the active noise cancelling stuff being extra sensitive.
Thanks I will use a hair fruire then as I did soak mine in water
Use a hair dryer or put them in the sun for a bit... dont just soak them wipe them and put them back on instantly....
I soaked these bitches in soap and water
Yeah it freaked me out thinking the AirPods were damaged with the horrible buzzing noises but luckily once they dried out fully after a few days they went back to normal… phew!!!
Thanks for the tip it helped me prevent it in advance. I think this issue might be the result of not wringing out the moisture in the cloth enough. As long as it's slightly damp when both cleaning and rinsing it shouldn't require day(s) to dry. 24 hours should be enough after laying it on a lint free cloth to dry imo.
I bought the silver ones. They look incredible. For a week.
literally!!! you won't believe how brown and disgusting mine turned
Thanks for reviewing this. I got the black ones and I know my ears can get sweaty sometimes and I just feel I wanna clean them even-though you can’t see dirty. I’ll do it at weekends because I use em everyday for work ✌🏾😁
I got the green ones. So far I've cleaned them two times. For the ear pads I have this brush that I got with a shoe cleaning kit and I scrubbed them with regular water and soap.
For the mesh on the headband I used a pure white towel (no colors/dye), clear washing detergent (no colors or scent), bleach, and baking soda and got it back to white. It was getting noticeably dingie.
The mesh on the headband is actually pretty sturdy, but I still wouldn't be rough on it. Just a gentle scrubbing should do the trick.
Then I just put it under my fan and to dry.
Also with the ear pads, make sure to use a towel and squeeze the excess water out.
Another thing I do with the ear pads is use frabric freshener (like febreezs or something) a light spray should do the job to keep them from having a stinky scent from sweat.
New subscriber. Your videos are great. Informative and humorous, and you just happen to be an incredibly handsome man. So, well done ;) ANYWAY, you are a natural presenter so I hope you go far!
Hi Dayo, I did indeed get the silver Airpods Max and thank you so much for this video, it really helped get mine clean, and saved me from buying a replacement.
No problem. A replacement would've costed you an arm and a leg lol.
I advice you not to smell your earcushens, because trust me color doesn't matter after that :) I've heard of people putting them in socks and in the laundromat. on 30 degrees for 30 minutes (15 if your machine has the option) Obviously I don't know how this works for the longrun, because there might be glue in it...
Honestly, if you can afford it, it’s a good idea to get 1st party spares to switch out to if needed. You could always get 3rd party ones if you don't want to spend the $75 plus tax.
@@QuantaSolace why when you can clean them?
Thanks a lot, i've the space grey ones, they look dirty but they were super smelly fell asleep a few times with them and the sweating etc.
Worst part is these mesh earcups will begin to smell like shit with accumulated sweat. The only solution is to get a 2nd pair of earcups, put the others in the wash & dryer (softest silk settings). Also, condensation can form inside the cups e.g. when moving from warm outdoors to an air conditioned room: this broke my Maxes in Florida but thanks Apple Care+ for replacing them. Thanks for the post, Dayo.
Anytime my man
I’m so surprised there’s not more discussion around this issue. Mine smell like my high school football helmet.
I orders some non mesh knock offs (protein leather) and seems to be a good solution.
Also, I just ran my original mesh ones in the dishwasher. They’re drying still but appear to be clean and smell free. I’ve tried cleaning by hand and did nothing. So hoping this is the trick.
@@ABCGE100 updates?
They literally broke (stopped working) bcs of that!!? Whaat
I’m so glad I got the black ones even though they look good but after awhile they smell from sweating…need to be clean too!
I have the blue. They looked soiled. Followed your direction. Clean again. 👍🏾👍🏾
Let’s goooo
I have been using my airpod maxs at the gym for over a year, and for about 6 hours a day every day. The cushions stink so bad so thanks for the vid I really need to get the cleaned 🤢😭
i’m surprised they didn’t mess up since they aren’t sweat or water resistant
Blue Max and I wear mine ALL the time and yes dirty and smelly. Dirty is not so evident at a glance but I can tell and that’s what is important!
Thanks!
just cover them in honey it does the trick
Thanks for the explanation. I have silver white ones. And they needed cleaning. I actually ended up soaking the pads in warm water to with I added soap and a drop of Vanish for white garments. So far so good. I just couldn’t get them cleaned well just by rubbing a damp cloth. So soaking truly got rid of the dirt as there is no electrics I went ahead. The issue maybe the glue if any is used to keep the fabric in place around the hard plastic components?
I wish I would have gotten the black ones but the grey ones were the only ones in stock. Glad there is a video on how to clean it
TIp for drying the cushions: once you have cleaned them and they are wet, put them in a pillow case and chuck them into the tumble dryer for 45 mins and they will be completely dry!
Or you could put them in the microwave
@@datasleek7950 thats a terrible idea they have metal in them
@@chestcavity_ I was being sarcastic.
@@datasleek7950 come on we’re all friends…
@@datasleek7950 i think its a great idea
I have been putting mine in my trousers pocket and washing them weekly in the washing machine. Smell great and look new every time and dry in less than a day
Im wondering why can we not just dip them in soapy water??? There is no reason not to I think tbh
Just bought some used air pods max and immediately clicked on this vid; rly helped me out and it cleaned the black earmuffs p well; tyy 🙏🏻
Nice job on cleaning them. I’ve got both the green and grey ones. They are still clean, but I don’t use them every day. Mostly on the couch, so that makes a difference. I see that they are pretty easy to clean.
Keep up the nice work with your RUclips movies. You’re indeed a natural easy speaking youtuber. Always a pleasure to see your movies
Thanks for the video. Just an fyi - tsp is a teaspoon which is 5mL. A tablespoon is 15mL - three times as much as apple suggests.
Thank you for sharing. I was looking for a tutorial on how to properly clean my AirPods Max ear pads. I have the blue ones and believe me they get visibly dirty and will carry an odor, if you are using them when working out due to perspiration transfer.
Thanks for the video! I just got the grey ones and was starting to regret it! I’m glad to see that they are easy to clean!
Great video, i have the black ones and use them at the gym. Obviously I cant see how dirty mine are but they do smell… gonna try this out!
Got makeup powder foundation exactly!😢 I’ll see if this method works thank you
Bro that wood backsplash is fire
I green ones look a little gnarly from makeup. Planning to clean them this week!!
was looking for this and you came in clutch.
Always good to see you JJJ
@@DayoAworunse made my day. Great to see ya man.
Does the damp cloth get all of the detergent off of them? Does it leave a soapy film? My child has autism and is real sensitive to smells and textures, that is why I am worried.
No residue is left after using the damp cloth, but I recommend scrubbing twice with the damp cloth instead of the 30 seconds apple says. I also think with the 24 hour drying session it should be normal with the smell gone
@@DayoAworunse thank you
they do get dirty in white, cleaning mine today and my nephew used them, i didnt think until after he was eating cheese balls, thus orange on his hands=touching case, ear buds and outside, i bought plastic covers off amazon and they made this easy, so just inside needed a clean as rest was a wipe off. I love these headphones, i have Bose and chose these over them every time, i travel a lot and they are just superior for me. Yes they need more charging but the noise cancellation is just amazing, I cant hear my wife manning or kids trying to wind me up, and they know it thus tap me on shoulder to talk to me, but when i want to hear as normal=transparent and hey presto normal ambient sound but still hearing the Laptop or iPad pro i am using etc. Will always buy these as they evolve now. Just to good.
This worked like a charm... thank you!
Glad it worked
Cheers ! super helpful - if you could do the headband video it would be great
I have the silver ones and i got makeuo stains on them now so thank you so much for this video❤️
anytime
Tide stain remover works great if you want to skip the mixing detergent with water step or alcohol wipes(dries super fast)
Wow!!! I didn’t know there were instructions, I just used, Dawn Foaming Dish Soap and then a damp microfiber cloth and placed them in front of a Fan, lol, 👊🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
I was wondering if that worked, lol, that's what I was going to use eventually. I mean if it's good enough (and safe enough!) for cleaning crude oil off of wildlife...... 🤷♀
hey man, can you do a test for cleaning it in the washing machine ? all these wiping and drying are annoying
Washing machine sounds too harsh and might rip the fabric.
But I can always try.
@@DayoAworunse thanks man , I am using green color and after 1 year of usage the darkened color is noticable
@@DayoAworunse I almost did it yesterday by putting the two ear cup in a mesh laundry bag , but then I was worried about the washing process will ruin the acoustically engineered memory foam
I dropped mine around my neck today and kept getting a funky smell. Yep it was the pads. I got the space grey so they looked fine but a bit smelly. Obviously it’s from sweat so that being said how important is it to have them bone dry after cleaning? Thanks for the video.
Great walkthrough 👍
You would be surprised how dirty the blue ones get. I cleaned mine using your video thank you for sharing.
Really appreciate the vid man & was very simple & helpful
Thanks
Quick Question - Can you do a video cleaning the headband piece?
You did a lovely job! Your AirPod Maxes looks awesome!
I got these in November but as it got closer to June… yeah the sweat builds up fast lol I clean them last week
I got the space grey but ordered the blue earcups. And those get dirty as well.
Thanks for the helpful tip, it worked 👍🏽
I don't think 24hrs is necessary for everyone. Maybe in the winter in the north but if you live in a temperate climate, outside in the sun for an hour will make them crispy dry...
Very helpful thanks
I can’t with the “gray microfiber is rubbing off “😂
Do you usually run in them? Trying to buy a pair but I wanna workout with them. I don’t to heavy cardio or sweat heavy… what’s your thoughts?
I use AirPods Pro for running. These are cloth so I don't want them to soak up the sweat
I have the orange and it does need a cleaning once in a while
very informative and straight to the point
I like the way you talk.
I let mine sit in laundry detergent soap /water for 25 mins..then rinsed & let dry them air dry out. It got rid of the smell because of sweat and look brand new. ( I have the space gray).
I definitely need to clean my space gray ones. They’re starting to smell, haha.
Bruh same lol
i buy a new pair of cups every 2 days
7 months later and this comment has happened to me lol.
I have the same problem, did as Dayo in the video but the they're still smelling
Surely you can stick them in a pillow case inside the washing machine?
Got some space grey ones and they dirty pretty quick too :(
I really want the silver. How often do you clean these? Once a month? Less? More?
just replace the cups once a day or once a week if ur poor
@@australianpatriot 💀
@@australianpatriot 💀 wasting hella bread
I washed my space gray pair today and it did the trick. My main worry is moisture build up within the headphones. Spring is already here in the south, and it's gonna start getting real humid.
Just wondering how many weeks or months of dirt was your Ear Cups before they were cleaned for this video?
4 months or whenever they first released.
Got black and it definitely need cleaning!! Plus I think all of them should be clean you know sweating and all that bacteria
5:22 Nope. blue gets super dirty too
I got space gray. They are dirty and itch. It is taking multiple cleanings.
proper kitchen mate. love it!
Next due a video on organizing my spice cabinet.
got mine today, thank you so much for for this video
Thank you for the honest review bro. Keep up the good work!
I have the blue pair they stay pretty clean
I would just use baking soda and vinegar and a extra soft toothbrush to really clean off the grime and dirt. That cloth is not going to do it. I had to do the same thing for my apple braided watch bands.
Thank you!

I get dirt on them bc my bags always got pencils etc I’m an artist and the cushions do get dirty bc the case doesn’t cover properly - makes me feel gross and has ruined the clean feeling I used to have with them
How about the over the head piece? Can that be cleaned?
It can, there are instructions on apple website as well for the headband
I went to Apple to get new ear pads and they ended up just giving me new ones I guess under warranty replacement or something like that!
Hiii, is your headband still white? No signs of yellowing?
Still white. Other than the make-up stain my sisters on one spot, its pristine white.
During the pandemic, how do I disinfect my AirPods Max? No sources say
Would it be a bad idea to soak them
I got the black ones
You said 1 tablespoon but what you put on the video was 1 teaspoon. Big difference there:)
Completely missed that, but it still turned out great
I had to clean my blue ones. They were looking pretty rough.
Mine were fine then my wife started using it and they started getting weird. 😂 Thanks for sharing!
Definitely have blue and mine are as dirty as yours. Thanks for saving me a bit of reading lol
I appreciated this video AND how neat your place is! Sheesh!
Thank you
Thanks for your help! Great video
Anytime!
Can you clean Airpod Pro 2 make a video please
Thank you ❤
nice kitchen 🤌🏽
The kitchen will soon be no more
Except it says 1 teaspoon and not a tablespoon.
I should’ve watch this first I literally soaked the whole in liquid detergent
I tried speeding up the process and blow-drying them. It burned the mesh 😭😭
Blow dryer or heat gun?
@@DayoAworunse it doubled as both. But it worked out for the best. I sold those for $275. Then some rich chick was selling an open box pair (Opened June 2024) with 2 years apple care+ for $170. Fate is on your side sometimes 🥹
I appreciate you bro ‼️
awesome thanks!
Very helpful.. thanks man
green and silver get pretty dirty
How do they smell? I don't sweat much with them on but they do smell funny.
i have the blue ones and mine got dirty since i used them during my 30min break at my job where im a welder and get dirty pretty easily lol havent used them after work no more only when clean but with the darker color u can still see the grime lmao
I wear mines to workout & the smell from sweating is crazy
Mix some baking soda and essential oil with the soap.
Tbh Apple sells the ear cups for a reason, if they get super dirty it’s probably better to just buy a new pair and throw the old ones out since the stains most likely wount completely come out
yeah just spend 40 dollars when you can clean them for free
I’m not going to lie I was going to buy some new cushions. Lol. I’m glad I looked this up.
I have the blue…it’s the same thing. Needs cleaning.
This guy is great 👍
You’re great
I have the rose gold and they looked horrible from my fiancé wearing them to work in a factory. I can’t wait to make him clean them now 😂
I wouldn’t pick the silver ones, never again.
Blue you have yo clean
