TY for sharing this tutorial with us. This is a very beautiful painting, and, I hope mine turns out at least half as pretty as yours did. I appreciate your advice and instructions on achieving such a look.
So pleased to finally learn how to paint a sunset. You make it look so simple and I can’t wait to give it a try now! Thank you so much. I love your videos and I love painting with my acrylics! 😍
I easily followed how to use cool through to warm something I struggle with in most paintings. You are an extremely talented artist. Thank you so much,
I really enjoyed this tutorial with all the useful tips. I liked that you let us know all of the materials used such as paint and brushes. Beautiful painting.
brilliant mate, ive followed this tutorial (to the best of my limited ability) and completed my first ever painting , really chuffed thanks for the great tutorials.
Thanks heaps Sandy. Of course, the joy of watching it on youtube means you don't have to live with the smell. And of course, the editor cuts out all the really bad jokes. Cheers, Mark W.
thanks Mark, I needed a refresher of the sunset thing from the last workshop - I have still never finished that piece and think I must might just start from the beginning
Beautiful painting! I am in awe of your talent, you have such precision and technique with your brush strokes, a truly magnificent gift. Your video was extremely helpful, thank you.
Awesome tutorial. You are a great teacher and artist. Thanks for sharing! Just found your videos on RUclips. Love the way you paint water too. Learning a lot from you. Thanks very much.
I've never heard of the unlocking formula. It will really help me cause I'm not always able to work on my paintings quick enough to be able to blend my colors enough. I will hafta see if that product is available in my area. I appreciate your instructions and advice.
So helpful ! thank you for sharing freely….I do have your dvds and I'm stuck with practicing time or starting a new painting ..hence watching all your video today !
Can you do a water demonstration too, like beach’s or anything with water. Having a hard time looking real. Love the sunset, can’t wait to try it. Thank you sooo much.
Hi Linda, we have quite a lot of clips on this channel showing how to paint water. Check out the playlist ruclips.net/p/PLbRTq9lnYzEBjOhtrfefxQJaiAHzRO80M Cheers Mark W :)
Thank you Mark- I love this one! I have practiced gradients so maybe my sunsets will look amazing! I had your "recipes" on my other computer but it is not working. Neither is your link. Did you take it down?
Hi Helen, I'm not sure where it went! I'll get that fixed asap. In the meantime go to www.explore-acrylic-painting.com/color-mixing-recipes.html to download them again. Cheers :) Mark W.
Love your painting techniques! Would you be willing to post a video on how to paint clouds. All kinds of clouds. Day clouds, night clouds & even storm clouds. I'm currently in the process of painting a storm painting & the clouds are not coming out the way I want.
Hi Jay4891T, thanks for your positive comments. Here's another clip on clouds: ruclips.net/video/ItHUmFdpOZ0/видео.html and we also have a page on the website on clouds www.explore-acrylic-painting.com/how-to-paint-clouds.html There will definitely be more on RUclips on clouds in the future, but hope that helps for now. Cheers, Mark W :)
Hi Suzanne, for some reason it won't let me reply to any of your comments - but thanks for all of them! Yes, you can purchase from the UK, just go to our Shop page at www.explore-acrylic-painting.com for more info on our tutorial products. And yes, there is gesso on the canvas in most cases! Cheers, Mark W.
Hmmm, not really on RUclips. You could search under "sunset" on the channel if you like and see what you can find? Otherwise, we do have this downloadable tutorial in the shop which might suit you: www.explore-acrylic-painting.com/tropical-sunset-v-log.html
Well I've tried to paint this on and off over a few years... I always end up with a dry scratchy mess. I can mix the colours, no problems but I just can't get the colours to blend before drying even on a small area. I'm not using expensive paints could that be the problem? Many thanks in advance.
Your first step, then, is learn to draw. Your drawing is the "bones" of your painting. If the drawing isn't right the painting won't be right. So, get busy, take drawing lessons, and don't ever give up your dream!
Sure would. Just remember that the silhouette will be warmer closer to the light source. You may want to use Permanent Alizarin and Pthalo blue to get your dark colour and diminish the Pthalo Blue as you get closer to the sun. Maybe even add a touch of Cad yellow light. ( Warning. if it goes green then you have too much blue in the mix.)
Do you prep your canvas with anything? Also do you dampen your canvas to get the paint to spread without drying so fast? Arcylics Dry so fast .. thank you
Hi Trish, no not in general. And no, I don't dampen the canvas however you can if you like, particularly with a large painting, wet the back of the canvas before you do a large gradation. I use Atelier Interactive Artists Acrylics which IMO are superior acrylics to blend with. You can use a product called "Unlocking Formula" to keep the paint mobile however water will also do this. Cheers, Mark W.
Amazing work like always, and inspiring. Just wish I could find these paints here in South Africa. Never even heard of 'Interactive' acrylics, and open medium? The link to "color-mixing-recipes" does not work. Thanks!
Hi ZakZky007, thanks for your message. Try the link now, it should work - I removed the full stop at the end! I can contact Chroma HQ and see where your nearest stockist is if you like, or you can go to www.artscene.com.au for the full range of paints. OR, you can purchase the recipe pack from us (which includes the paints you need) using the color-mixing-recipes link for recipe packs. Thanks for your positive comments! Cheers, Mark W :)
Can we buy from the UK just love your teaching and its in English I love the beach and the waves and the sunset so I will be looking to buying some of your DVD 's
Hi Mark.... I'm new to the world of acrylic painting/art. I've been searching high and low for a video tutorial that shows an easy and awesome sunset gradient/blend. Yours is by far THE BEST! Thank you for posting. I do have a question... What is Permanent Alizarin.
Hi HGAviator - thanks for your kind comments! And, no problem. Permanent Alizarine is a "cool red" produced by Chroma Australia, the paint is called Atelier Interactive Artist Acrylic, Permanent Alizarine. Hope that helps! Cheers Mark W.
Hi Reynaldo, yes is the short answer. You would probably use mineral turpentine to thin your oil paint. However, there are lots and lots of products for thinning oil paints. Personally I'd like my first few coats to dry as fast as possible, so I'd be looking for products that accelerate the drying time of oils. Cheers, Mark W.
+maria christina diza Hi Maria, the colours used are shown at the beginning of the clip. They are Atelier Interactive Artists Acrylics Permanent Alizarine, Cadmium Yellow Light and Pthalo Blue (and Titanium White). Hope that helps, Cheers, Mark W.
Meteorite's sound Hi there, sure why not. But I would be checking with the people who manufacture the paint to see about how mixing them affects the conservation qualities. If you're just playing around, no problems. If you want to create a finished piece that someone may want to spend some money on, then I'd be very careful.
Wow you could actually toast bread on that sky , amazing painting thank you so much for sharing 😊
Thank you so much 😀
I always learn something new with your tutorials.
Glad to hear that!

What is “interactive” and you mentioned another product that makes it more blendable like oils?
Atelier Interactive artists acrylics by Chroma paints. You can add Unlocking Formula to keep the mobility of the paint extended :)
Liked and Subbed. Well done, man. Cheers
I want to paint this and was wondering is there a finished one? Im still learning & dont have the imagination enough to finish the bottom part ;)
