MY FAVORITE VOCAL COACH REACTING TO THE LEGENDARY BAND THAT INTRODUCED ME TO SYMPHONIC METAL AND CHANGED MY LIFE?? YES! There's the gothic/doom vibe from "Enter" 1997 and "The Dance" 1998, the celtic sound in "Mother Earth" 2000, the fantasy/fairy symphonic of "The Silent Force" 2004, the full epic bombastic symphony of "The Heart of Everything" 2007, the masterpiece concept album "The Unforgiving" 2011 (with a lot of that 80s sound that you love!), Hydra 2014 (which I read is considered their worst album but NO, there are beautiful songs in that album) and the more techno and electronic sounds of "Resist" 2019. @TenarTheKargish: I agree with everything you wrote, except on one thing that unfortunately for me is fundamental: yes! there has always been something catchy on their records (well, maybe not much in "Enter"), but no! disco electronics no! It is true they have always changed a lot since their beginnings, and I have always followed and loved them very much until "Hydra" which I liked but which contains the first big warning sign: "And We Run (feat. THIS SONG IS INSANELY AMAZING. Sharon's voice is unlike any I've ever heard. Check out their older original music, I recommend The Cross, All I Need, Angels, The Promise, Our Solemn Hour, and Deceiver of Fools, Mercy Mirror, and Memories. Notable, yet amazing cover of a modern song by Lana Del Rey, check out Within Temptation's cover of Summertime Sadness.
Nice reaction and deconstruction. I definitely recommend you to react to The Promise (Black Symphony), that´s a live video where you can hear the head voice from Sharon and the symphonic elements into Within Temptation music
Angels is her most typical airy-high voice. Live or the video-clip. "Our Solemn Hour" live from the same show that you did "Somewhere" from uses the full orchestra and choir to full effect.
I'm not sure about the nostalgia (I lived the 80s as well), but I definitely agree that this is a very catchy, approachable, accessible song (and I also mean that in a good way). I've been a WT fan for a really long time, and they continue to evolve and change their sound with every album, and I can totally understand why they do that. I imagine they'd get bored playing the same things over and over and over again. Personally, I'm really enjoying the heaviness and aggressiveness of their latest releases, "Entertain You" and "The Purge", and I think they blend in the electronic/techno elements beautifully. And Sharon sounds as amazing as ever.
Oh, oh, oh - thank you SO much - this is a breakthrough! Within Temptation wanted to incorporate the latest techno sounds into their metal mastery of tempo, rhythm guitar and Sharon's incomparable voice. The plaintive quality of her voice makes her a real standout, doesn't it? This is the latest iteration of a truly multi-faceted band. Sharon den Adel is into 'colors' and, leaving behind the monochromatic tones & rhythms of Gothic Metal, declares in 'Silver Moonlight': "I'm impatient but it's colors that I need; too many shades of grey, I cannot breathe..." Please keep researching them - you will not be disappointed - I promise! Next suggested stop? I recommend Hydra and/or The Unforgiving - as Tim below says, the older stuff is more symphonic.
The more old songs of WT are more symphonic and have even celtic sound ("Mother Earth" for example). But their new songs are more industrial and have more electronic sounds (wich I don't mind at all). Sharon's vocal has also been changed, she started to use more chest, mix voice and less head voice (oh I love her high head voice). Anyway, I still love them. So thank you for reaction.
Hi. I would recommend that you listen to Within Temptation from their beginnings in the late 90’s, and work your way to present. I believe that each album shows a step in their evolution, and maturity. Also, I once read that Sharon is a self taught singer. I’m not 100% sure if that is true, but I do recognize little characteristics from her, that I don’t hear from anyone else. Examples would be breath placement, how she cuts off certain words and some words/ vowels that she holds a note. I find these to be very charming about her voice (because it’s not “technically” perfect). I can’t wait to see what you choose next!
Hi Christi, I discovered Symphonic Metal about 10 years ago and for me the top of the list is Nightwish, EPICA, Within Temptation, Kamelot A lot of the singers from Symphonic bands regularly show up in the Ayreon projects, here is a piece from the latest Ayreon project featuring Simone Simons from Epica and Tommy Karevik from Kamelot, it's very musical theater, but also fantastic, I don't think you have reacted to Tommy yet, I think you'll be impressed: Ayreon - Daniel’s Descent into Transitus Medley (Official Video)
They changed their sound a lot throughout the years: Until 2007 it's actually gothic/doom/symphonic metal and especially the early work isn't as "accessible" :) From 2011 ("The Unforgiving") on they got more mainstream and rocky. Newest album "Resist" (2019) is heavily influenced by electronic elements and this trend goes on as it seems. For live performances you can choose anything from Elements or Black Symphony. Although i have to recommend these really old videos from the early 00s: ruclips.net/video/M4DW2-xDroU/видео.html ("Restless",2002) ruclips.net/video/wXQEjaVLxkk/видео.html ("The Promise", 2002) Video quality isn't the best but the sound is very good. Keep up your great work!
I'd only consider they're music from the 90s gothic metal, they already went mainstream in the early 00s. They were all over the radio in The Netherlands back then with songs like Ice Queen, Angles and Memories. I love those videos you've linked here, this version of The Promise is my favourite Within Temptation live performance. A couple other songs the performed really well around that time are The Dance and Enter.
I love so many of their songs that I don't even know what to recommend. Angels is what got me into their world, but I hold Somewhere close to my heart. I also love Fire and Ice, Paradise and Stand your ground. From their last album, Supernova has a very interesting synthwave touch.
Another wonderful reaction and analysis, Christi, thank you. I fell in love with Sharon and the band around 14 years ago, when they had already been in existence for 10 years or so. What is truly remarkable about Sharon's voice is that to my knowledge she never had formal training and is largely self taught. There is such a wealth of material to choose from when exploring what Sharon has done. Obviously the work with Within Temptation, but also her solo album 'My Indigo', the covers album Within Temptation did of various artists from Bruno Mars to Sia,Lana del Ray and other collaborations Sharon has performed.. She possesses a very pure, clear and versatile voice, with a warm and engaging personality to boot. Well worth exploring her back catalogue, Christi!! 😊😊❤
This band is a true gem. I’d highly recommend Candles (live) or anything from their The Heart of Everything album. Truly one of the greatest albums ever composed, in my opinion, with unforgettable tracks like Frozen, The Truth Beneath The Rose, and Hand of Sorrow that show the blend of their old sound and the new sound they were starting to find. Please react to more of this awesome band!!
My suggestion would be The Promise, but not the Black Symphony-version of 2008, but the Rock Werchter-version of 2002. Although the BS-version in it's entirety is better, the voice of Sharon is less sparkling (because of her being sick in the week before the concert). So to really enjoy her full voice i would recommend the RW-version. Hereby the link to it: ruclips.net/video/wXQEjaVLxkk/видео.html. PS. How much i miss the crowds
Your comment about there being something in the water reminded me... You still haven't heard Charlotte Wessels. She's the lead singer of Dutch symphonic metal band Delain, and is another Dutch vocal powerhouse who cuts through the music with incredible power and clarity. I think you would love their song _*Masters of Destiny*_. But it must be the official music video. She sings over herself for parts of the chorus, which can't really be done the same, live. In this song, Charlotte's vocals go from gentle and almost sweet, to immensely powerful. This one will really blow you away. It's epic, awesome, and yet still remains accessible. And the video itself is equally impressive! You really should check it out. (They also have collaborated with Marko from Nightwish for a couple of their songs. They sound fantastic together and have great chemistry. )
Love your reaction. I have been listening to this song for days. I can't stop. I love the sound, her singing, and the visual story. If you get a chance, on or off camera, check out the video for the song, "Memories" It is a beautiful symphonic rock song, but the story is so moving.
Check out Sharon's solo project, My Indigo! Notable songs, Someone Like You, Star Crossed Lovers, Where is The Love, Safe and Sound. But the whole album is great! Also her song with Armin Van Buren is one of the most viewed songs on RUclips!
There is a lot lof great songs from Within Temptation, like Angels, Our Solemn Hour, Memories, What Have You Done, and also collaborations with Tarja (Paradise) and Xzibit (And We Run). I would also recommend Sharon´s solo project My Indigo, I really love that album, and she did really something special and different in there. Great reaction as always. Keek the great job and the good vibes!
Within Temptation has evolved from death metal-influenced "gothic" symphonic metal to this modern sound with synths replacing the string section. Sharon's vocals matched that evolution, with her "home" register lowering over time. If you check their earlier hits like Ice Queen, Angels, What Have You Done, she spent a lot of time up high, whereas this song is representative of where she's been over the past decade. I personally like latter day Sharon, as I think there is a richer, more robust, more ripe quality to her voice that is just irresistible.
This is one of their more electronic-based albums but what I love so much about Within Temptation is their versatility. Every album sounds so unique! My favorite is The Heart of Everything which has more of that orchestral sound. The Howling is a great track! And Sharon is just...an ethereal singer. So much power, such an insane range-when she hits those high notes like in Somewhere, I swear she must have ingested a violin because there's no way a person should be able to have a voice that clear and laser-focused. I love your deconstruction! It's so thorough and it's nice that you give it a full listen through first before diving in. So much interesting commentary!
Please don't feel you have to apologize for your opinion, you're entitled to think and say what you want. The band has gone mainstream through the years, their earlier stuff was more gothic/atmospheric, but we love them enough to stick with them through their various evolutions. It is a catchy song and I'm loving the electronic influences in this one.
Sharon den Adel (in Dutch the A before a consonant followed by a vowel is open A (like Adel) , is pronounced as an open A, like the A-sound in 'why'- w-aaa-y) and the e in Adel is a muted e or uh (as in later), stress is on the A). Regarding Sharon's voice, perhaps interesting is a track called 'In and out of love', from Armin van Buuren, a few years in a row chosen as best dj in the world. The music is a bit house/techno, but Sharon's voice sounds clear and beautiful.
I would say, listen to any or ALL of Within Temptation songs because they are GOLD! My favorite of all times has always been Pearls of Light from their first album 'Enter' but you might want to listen to 'Edge of the world' from the album Hydra. I have seen Within Temptation live 8 times and they are always amazing and Sharon sings like an angel! She is even better live! Truly the best singer ever.
In fact the vocalist Sharon den Adel has stated in many interviews they get inspired by the 80s and 90s music. Great analysis. She loves Kate Bush & Tori Amos. Wish you could check out their live performances. The Promise live at Black Symphony.
So glad to see you reacting to Within Temptation. Talking about Within Temptation, The Heart of Everything is muy favourite álbum, so if you liked the softess of Somewhere I could suggest Forgiven, from the same concert, I also think The Truth Beneath the Rose is a good once from that concert, actually Black Symphony is muy favourite Live Vídeo Álbum, that era was when they where the most symphonic and sin that concertista there even was a full orchestra and a full chorous... You can't go wrong with any song really... They went from the metal sound to the most dark sound then more céltic an in the next álbum went symphonic and my favourite when they were most symphonic rock then they started to have more 80's sounds, wow, and now they are more electrónic... Not leaving behind their essence... I love how they embrace al this different parts
Sharon wanted to take some time off, and decide the future of the band with her Husband (Robert Westerholt, the bald guitarist), and this is the new direction. Love this song! Love this band!
Great to see a "real" person commenting with knowledge and without all that effect grabbing exaggerations. Just cool. (And great colour-style in your vid as well.)
Always love a Within Temptation reaction video. And starting your Within Temptation experience with The Purge is pretty... unique. Cuz WT started from a completly different corner of metal. Only after 2011 WT moved more and more into the power and electro metal direction. But originally, they started out as gothic metal band with their first album Enter ("Candles" and "Restless" are my favs of that album), then recorded three albums that are prototypical symphonic metal. The 2008 Black Symphony concert which was recorded with a full classic orchestra and choir was WT's peak. If you've been expecting a band in the Nightwish mold, checkout songs of that Black Symphony album such as The Promise, Mother Earth, or The Truth Beneath The Rose.
I totally understand what you mean when you said they-re accessible... Within Temptation is not a "show-off" band, their music isn't much calculated neither presumptuous.. They're essentially a sincere band, their music show their truth, always. Their atitude is more like "come and join us, lets have this experience together", and not "hey see what we can do", nor eventually doing it just because they can...
Hey, don't worry, you said nothing wrong haha I think we could say that within had some "phases" and it is a "problem" even between some fans, (not for me) because of the arguing about 'old within is better', 'new within is better'. I think they are amazing, I listen to the older and new songs and think both are amazing. Great reaction, can't stop listening to the purge. I always say, I don't understand why fans are always complaining about the changes, at the end of the day is a win-win cause we can listen to it all
I've been saying the same, they have something special in their tap water. Rumors have it that she's all self-tought singer. Hard to believe tho. I'd imagine she'd had at least some lessons and practice behind her.
You should really react to Marcela Bovio. She's another very great vocalist who was in some symphonic metal bands and some beautiful, more calm solo stuff.
Never heard this one and as a citizen of The Netherlands, I will check our drinking water 'right now'!

Within Temptation my favorite band! And Sharon has an amazing voice! 😍 And for the next song, I'd suggest something from Mother Earth album. There are great songs there. 😉
I have been a fan of Within Temptation for 18 years now. They have certainly evolved from this mythical and fantastical band to something a bit more cynical, but I still love them.
People labels WT as symphonic or gothic metal band, but they really bring on each album some different and new sound. However, for a more symphonic style, you should check The Promise. Thanks for the reaction, Chrissie!
Awesome commentary! Yeah WT continuously change, they're not really symphonic metal anymore and Sharon doesn't use head voice as much anymore as before but they keep making very cool stuff:-) And your 80's vibe probably partly come from Indiana Jones similarities of the vid;)
Congratulations Christi I like the song and I also like her lower register. Floor did her 2nd master class today. You should react to Morher Earth from them. She is really good especially since she is self taught. Anneke has a new single also came out yesterday. Be Safe. I think you're great.
it is funny you mention that it sounds nostalgoc cause that's exactly what Within temptation themselves said about the song. it's in their new style but with a touch of the past. and almost all the fans are saying the same actually. so yes it's very nostalgic and very beautiful
I would second Paradise with Tarja for a powerful combination. That album was one of the best concerts I've been to, although yes, Within Temptation have a more commercial sound than some other bands in that genre, which is why they are chart topping in Europe and should have been touting with Evanescence last year. Entertain You from the current album has a striking video.
The latest songs from Within are definitely more hard and techy. A few of my favorites from different albums are Mother Earth (name of the song and album, 2000), killer live versions of this song In the middle of the night (The Unforgiving, 2011) which also got nice live versions Covered by roses (Hydra, 2014). This album also got "What About Us" featuring Tarja Our solemn hour (Heart of Everything, 2007), also got nice live versions out there. See who i am (The Silent Force, 2004), this album also got "Somewhere", "Stand my Ground" and "Aquarius", which are all excellent. Restless (Enter, 1997, their debut studio album). Really really good song
Sharon did almost combust for real about 20 or so years ago when she got carried away headbanging near where the flames shoot up from the front of the stage. Luckily her then boyfriend (now husband) Robert Westerholt on rhythm guitar was alert and grabbed her by the arm pullung her out of the way a split second before the flames erupted.
Love your reaction🌼 But also this is a new song, there new sound is more digital. I CANT BREATH is a really good song undoubtably. They just released a album, then released this song after. Separately. So if you want to hear how they have evolved here’s a list of some older songs You will enjoy. -lost -Let Us burn -Stand my ground -memories -Mother Earth - ice queen -Fire and ice -shot in the dark - the heart of everything (my personal favorite😉)
You can also check out her solo Album "My Indigo" she did last year. Just great Artwork. For me personal i like _My Indigo_ and _Out of the Darkness_ the most.

This was a great and detailed review. Sharon den Adel has one of my favorite voices in any genre. Thank you for reviewing her.
Sharon’s voice so powerful, emotionnal and soft at the same time .ty for this reaction
Their live work is fantastic. The Promise or The Heart of Everything live are my favorites.
Sharon den Adel is into 'colors' and, leaving behind the monochromatic tones & rhythms of Gothic Metal, declares in 'Silver Moonlight': "I'm impatient but it's colors that I need; too many shades of grey, I cannot breathe..."
Please keep researching them - you will not be disappointed - I promise! Next suggested stop? I recommend Hydra and/or The Unforgiving - as Tim below says, the older stuff is more symphonic.
This was a great review 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I wish more people would recognize Sharon’s talent
Sharon's vocal range is 5 octaves, and she uses EVERY bit of her voice and has a raspy edge to it which really makes her voice stand out!
Please react to The Promise from their Black Symphony concert , i'd love to know what you'd think of it
Hi Christi, I discovered Symphonic Metal about 10 years ago and for me the top of the list is Nightwish, EPICA, Within Temptation, Kamelot
A lot of the singers from Symphonic bands regularly show up in the Ayreon projects, here is a piece from the latest Ayreon project featuring Simone Simons from Epica and Tommy Karevik from Kamelot, it's very musical theater, but also fantastic, I don't think you have reacted to Tommy yet, I think you'll be impressed:
Ayreon - Daniel’s Descent into Transitus Medley (Official Video)
Sharon is just a powerhouse of singer. She one of my favorite singer for sure .
They changed their sound a lot throughout the years:
Until 2007 it's actually gothic/doom/symphonic metal and especially the early work isn't as "accessible" :)
From 2011 ("The Unforgiving") on they got more mainstream and rocky.
Newest album "Resist" (2019) is heavily influenced by electronic elements and this trend goes on as it seems.
For live performances you can choose anything from Elements or Black Symphony.
Although i have to recommend these really old videos from the early 00s:
ruclips.net/video/M4DW2-xDroU/видео.html ("Restless",2002)
ruclips.net/video/wXQEjaVLxkk/видео.html ("The Promise", 2002)
Video quality isn't the best but the sound is very good.
@@Anonymous-sb9rr narrowminded stale static view.... it is not how bands exist or Thrive it is how they evolve
@@rickrack4812 I've got no idea what you're talking about. Is this supposed to be a reply to me?
I recommend to check out their live performance of The Promise from Black Symphony! You will be beyond amazed! :)
I love so many of their songs that I don't even know what to recommend. Angels is what got me into their world, but I hold Somewhere close to my heart. I also love Fire and Ice, Paradise and Stand your ground. From their last album, Supernova has a very interesting synthwave touch.
this track gives me huge 80's vibes 😍
Sharon is b beautiful woman with a strong, clear voice that she knows how to use .
They sound fantastic together and have great chemistry. )
Look back to one of the great hits in the past, called memories!
I really recommend the song *In Vain* . I just love it.
Love your reaction. I have been listening to this song for days. I can't stop. I love the sound, her singing, and the visual story. If you get a chance, on or off camera, check out the video for the song, "Memories"
It is a beautiful symphonic rock song, but the story is so moving.
I was enchanted by your comments, a detailed analysis of the parts perfectly described and understood even by a troglodyte like me. Thank you
Check out Sharon's solo project, My Indigo!
Some of their songs can reduce me to tears in a matter of seconds
Oh yea, it's gonna be amazing.
Yes - Sharon's voice is maturing and I like it. The emotion is the same as she reaches out to her audience's hearts.
React to "The Gathering - Travel" please!
STILL my favorite female vocalist. SHARON
We do have an advanced water filtration system in The Netherlands 😂😋..
Please react to "The Promise" from Black Symphony 😍😍
Sharon den Adel (in Dutch the A before a consonant followed by a vowel is open A (like Adel) , is pronounced as an open A, like the A-sound in 'why'- w-aaa-y) and the e in Adel is a muted e or uh (as in later), stress is on the A). Regarding Sharon's voice, perhaps interesting is a track called 'In and out of love', from Armin van Buuren, a few years in a row chosen as best dj in the world. The music is a bit house/techno, but Sharon's voice sounds clear and beautiful.
The ballads are the best way to enjoy the powerful and beautiful Sharon's voice
Best band ever 😍
Or shot in the dark. Another great song
So glad to see you reacting to Within Temptation.
My suggestions for the songs you may want to react to:
🔸"Forgiven"
🔸"Ice Queen"
🔸"Our Solemn Our"
🔸"Angels"
🔸"Memories"
🔸"Frozen"
🔸"What Have You Done" feat. Keith Caputo
🔸"Paradise (What About Us)" feat. Tarja Torunen
🔸"Dangerous" feat. Howard Jones
🔸"Shed My Skin" feat. Annisokay
🔸"And We Run" feat. Xzibit
🔸"Sinéad"
🔸"Faster"
Within Temptation - The Promise (live Elements) one of their best performances
Sharon has a great live voice
No autotune needed for her
Always love a Within Temptation reaction video.
I always say, I don't understand why fans are always complaining about the changes, at the end of the day is a win-win cause we can listen to it all
Within Temptation is really marvelous!!!
Angels, And We Run, Shot in the Dark, SuperNova, The Reckoning are some great songs to listen to by Within Temptation.
I've been saying the same, they have something special in their tap water.
Rumors have it that she's all self-tought singer. Hard to believe tho. I'd imagine she'd had at least some lessons and practice behind her.
Also check Dianne van Giersbergen out if you wanne hear all Dutchies ;o)
You should really react to Marcela Bovio. She's another very great vocalist who was in some symphonic metal bands and some beautiful, more calm solo stuff.
She has a new peoject called Dark Horse White Horse with a couple of songs out that are very heavy and great. Please react to one of them! :D
Never heard this one and as a citizen of The Netherlands, I will check our drinking water 'right now'!
Within Temptation my favorite band! And Sharon has an amazing voice! 😍
And for the next song, I'd suggest something from Mother Earth album. There are great songs there. 😉
My indigo by Sharon is awesome!!! 😲 🔥 😎
I have been a fan of Within Temptation for 18 years now. They have certainly evolved from this mythical and fantastical band to something a bit more cynical, but I still love them.
Anything from their "Black symphony" concert would be worth doing.
People labels WT as symphonic or gothic metal band, but they really bring on each album some different and new sound. However, for a more symphonic style, you should check The Promise. Thanks for the reaction, Chrissie!
An epic song and a great react! thank you.
Awesome commentary! Yeah WT continuously change, they're not really symphonic metal anymore and Sharon doesn't use head voice as much anymore as before but they keep making very cool stuff:-)
And your 80's vibe probably partly come from Indiana Jones similarities of the vid;)
Great reaction. 👍🏻 i recommend "Ice queen", "Angels" or "supernova"
Shed my skin within temptation 👌
Great reaction. Listen to Shed my skin
You need to hear Amaranthe. There are so many incredible songs that I don't even know where to start.
The latest songs from Within are definitely more hard and techy. A few of my favorites from different albums are
Mother Earth (name of the song and album, 2000), killer live versions of this song
In the middle of the night (The Unforgiving, 2011) which also got nice live versions
Covered by roses (Hydra, 2014). This album also got "What About Us" featuring Tarja
Our solemn hour (Heart of Everything, 2007), also got nice live versions out there.
You must listen to Raise Your Banner (watch the lyric video since that has the whole song) and Angels
If you really want to hear the real within temptation you can review "the howling" or "a demons fate" or "ice queen"
Love your reaction🌼 But also this is a new song, there new sound is more digital. I CANT BREATH is a really good song undoubtably. They just released a album, then released this song after. Separately.
So if you want to hear how they have evolved here’s a list of some older songs You will enjoy.
-lost
-Let Us burn
-Stand my ground
-memories
-Mother Earth
- ice queen
-Fire and ice
-shot in the dark
- the heart of everything (my personal favorite😉)
Wow! Wow Wow!
Please react to Within Temptation - Memories! That song is so beautiful. Liked your video and subscribed :)
Check out the promise live at black symphony you ll be amazed
You can also check out her solo Album "My Indigo" she did last year. Just great Artwork. For me personal i like _My Indigo_ and _Out of the Darkness_ the most.
Go listen to The Silent Force, then to The Heart of Everything. You will hear her voice mature. I just love this band.
Hi Christi, if you are open to a great melodic, catchy, symphonic metal music video, then you can't go wrong with this one, Simone is glorious as usual, this tune will be stuck in your head for days 😀
EPICA - Beyond The Matrix (OFFICIAL VIDEO)
I think the reckoning and ice queen would be some cool songs to analyse
React to Supernova please, i love Sharron's voice in that song too
Great reaction, thank you! I recommend you to try their song ''Frozen''. Beautiful song!
Please react to within temptation's supernova and faster videos
Paradise (What about us) featuring Tarja is REALLY good but the official video is better than the live
I really like the live Version from Hellfest
