Press the A button to place the scope in HOLD mode, then you can change the voltage scale and time base from the bottom menu and move left and right under the Horizontal tab in the main menu.

    hot soak after run hood closed in summer heat on restart often causes secondary winding breakdown of insulation in coils and other electronics.Old school trick on bikes and older motors was to pull plug wire half way off plug which would increase energy of spark at gap to clear fouled plugs Surprised you didn't do a cylinder efficiently test at idle in gear to rule out low cylinder compression. Good testing .

    Is there a way to pause or record the waveform to memory other than taking a BMP screenshot? A trigger record function would be nice when you were trying to capture the cranking waveform. Running from the driver seat back to the scope after cranking would be frustrating without a video camera to record the event. Seems a bit silly to run from the car to engine just to see a waveform for a few seconds before it is rewritten by the next screen.

    I've seen this video before some time way back and it's funny because I saw that waveform and immediately I saw signs of carbon tracking or spark jumping outside the cylinder when spark jumps around the 3kv it's normal but when it jumps early like around 6kv, it's definitely outside of the cylinder. In my opinion.

    my vehicle would miss when cold and till engine temperature reaches 90 degrees celcius, after that butter smooth. I changed plugs, checked injectors and cylinder compression. could there be something else I am missing ?

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  9 лет назад +2

      Yes, it could be an intake manifold gasket leak. Once the engine warms up the manifold and cylinder head expand and stops the leak. With the engine cold use a squirt gun filled with water and direct it at the manifold gasket area. I actually have a few videos where I show finding a vacuum leak with water.
      Another cause is early stages of headgasket failure. Are you adding coolant at all?

    Why does the U-scope not need some type of protection from the high KV? Where you use attenuators on other systems.

    • @jayelms2706
      @jayelms2706 4 года назад

      For this case, as long as you don't open a HV circuit there's no need for protection because all the U-Scope is reading comes from an induced pulse, a magnetic pulse coming out of the wire, I mean you are not unplugging any spark plug. If there's a leak through a defective wire (a crack for example) then you need to avoid any physical contact at that very point which at a darker hour could be seen as a little spark (electric arc).

    That's a neat scope. When I use my pico scope and I scroll back through the 32 frames from a captured coil waveform, some of the frames look great with a burn time showing relatively flat and a nice nose at the end, but other frames show the burn time sloping upward or sloping downward. Should all 32 frames of a capture show good characteristics or is it normal for some of them to show good and some of them to show not so good? Another example, on one of my tested coils, I've got 31 frames showing the burn line and 1 of the frames showing no burn line at all. I'm assuming that's a problem but I'm confused as to why I see so many good frames and then 1 bad frame on the same coil capture.

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  3 года назад +1

      normal characteristics of secondary waveforms my friend, but when you see no burn line on one frame, is that coupled with a misfire you can feel? Then I would believe it. If it is NOT misfiring, your most likely getting a poor signal with your pickup at times

      @@ScannerDanner Ah, good info, thanks. This '96 Grand Marquis has an intermittent misfire on different cylinders, and high stft under load on both banks. No CEL. Sounds like maybe I caught one of those intermittent misfires on that frame showing no burn line. One of these days I'm going to be as good as you at this stuff.....one day......👴

    Great video! However, can this test (or a similar one) be preformed on a ford C.O.P engine like the 5.4 V8?

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  9 лет назад +1

      +Kris Sondors absolutely, you just need a different adapter. It's called a paddle probe and comes with the uScope master kit.

    • @22lambo
      @22lambo 9 лет назад

      +ScannerDanner Awesome! Thank you for the response. Is the paddle probe the only way or is there another way if I don't have one? Thanks again!

      +Kris Sondors the paddle probe is one of many COP adapters that are used with a scope to acquire a secondary ignition waveform.
      The other units I have used are the following:

    +scannerdanner can u do some videos on ignition scooping using the verus pro, to also include your personal set up. I have purchased a verus pro about 1 year ago and I'm ready to start using ignition scooping. I trued it several times but got really funky wave forms. a lot different looking then the wave forms on your ebook and videos. so any video doing the different options with yoyt verus would be sio helpful. I've already spent sceral giurs googling and watching videos but no luck.

      +ScannerDanner yes I got a coupon for pay pal and used it on your channel like 7 months ago. I watched the verua series twice it was soo good. unfortunately money is tied up till the end of September. then im going to do year subscription. I think u have the one of the top 5 best automotive repair and information channels BTW. if I wasn't living in Alaska I'd take your classes personally rather then watch them. your ebook is very good, glad I purchased it. but like I said any more verus ignition scoope videos and some tutorials would be awsome and help soo much since I dont have a teacher or even a technical school that teaches how to use it(I checked so I know)

    Big fan first of all .... Is it possible to have a compression problem if motor runs flawless for 5-10 minutes and then goes left ... Idle seems steady on dial but big stumble felt in wheel at stop lights ( especially if it's a long light to wait. ) Power is 50% gone .. Puff puff out exhaust pipe ... Dash lights flicker but no changes under load (ac ,etc) crazy but car runs perfect cold ... I have no cats only straight pipes and tried to unplug o2 and ran worse ?? Could a faulty o2 rob all that power even at wot ? You would swear it still had clogged cats but I removed them ( shattered guts inside). I assume rich condition maybe killed o2 then killed my cats ? Would poor compression show up only warm temps ? That's all I'm super worried about , anything else like sensor related would be better news. Thanks

      +Kevin Duprey I don't think so, what are you working on? that would help.
      Also, are you absolutely positive that when you mash the pedal all the way to the floor that it does not improve. If you answer is no, then I agree, no reason to look at the O2 any further for this issue.
      Have you considered a faulty alternator diode? I have a video on this called "alternator diode testing".
      As a test, unplug the alternator (smaller connector, not bat wire) after it starts acting up and see if it improves

I'm positive if you mash the pedal it's acting like I'm pulling a semi and falls on its face ?? Again no cats on car , clear cat back flow .. I'm catching up watching your videos everyday and thanks for helping ...

    Dude I don't know what it is but every time that I have something that I am unsure of it seems like you make a video of it within a few days lol. I am working on a 08 Subaru impreza 2.5I that has a constant misfire on 2 cylinders @ idle and hi rpm and the waveform has a downward slope just like yours I thought it was a secondary misfire but wasn't positive, anyhow I told him to put a coil on it because he already did plugs and wires. It still got the misfires. I am going to do a relative compression test this week. Any suggestions? If I cant figure it out can I bring it to the school?
    Awsum video I don't do a lot of ignition scoping and this video helped me a lot!!

    Hi Paul,It's a really nice video.I am an Automotive engineer working in Saudi Arabia and I have being in the filed 25 years ago.
    in the last video for ignition coil . you said,at 8:17" that the spark plugs would be wet and it needs a minute to dry". I am working in Toyota disturber in Saudi Arabia. in Toyota, there is a signal feedback will be sent from secondary coil to computer to confirm that the spark differently is be generated. if the computer is not received this signal from a particular cylinder ,the computer would cut the fuel in this cylinder ......this is following to emission regulations which are be applicable in USA. I do not know if your Honda is the same or no. in addition, I would like to communicate with you about my Technical Articles which can be consider as On-Job-Training. if you want , I will send it . thanks again for your Video.

    Will the Uscope show a cylinder with low compression? In other words, can I hook this up to my F150 and determine which cylinder has low compression?

    • @ScannerDanner
      @ScannerDanner  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, you can do a relative compression test with the uScope. But you will not be able to determine by the scope alone which cylinder is which because it is only one channel.
