In this era it was about the competition and beating your opponent and gaining his respect with your play. It wasn't a love fest like it is today. They wanted to prove to that other man on that other team you and your team was gonna bring it, so you better be ready for a dog fight. Vernon Maxwell epitomized this attitude. I loved the NBA game back then. There were teams that stayed together for years and actually came together and became contenders without jumping from team to team . Different era , different mind set back then.
Vernon is the kind of player that would Punk JJ Redick if he played in that era..he always criticizes the era but he wouldn't get on the floor against these type of physical 2's. Spreewell, Starks, Mitch Richmond the list goes on.
Actually I've seen MAXWELL in real time hold his own against prime Sprewell and John Starks on both ends of the floor. . VERNON just look like he tapped out after the mid 90s after he got that ring in1994.
You're an ignorant casual if you think someone who played over 10 years in the league is getting scared or pulled by anyone. You have no idea what it took for someone like jj to not only make the league but stay in the league.
Mad Max was literally called the Jordan stopped but he would be afraid of Mitch stinking Richmond bro? The same Mad Max who demanded the coach treat Petrovic like MJ and make sure he goes up to scoring table to sub back in with Petrovic, RIP, who was one of the greatest scorers the league has forgotten.
Vernon was a player that could step up and make the most clutch shots. He could also lose his cool and make a bad foul or something. I was so upset when he walked from the team but all and all I am glad Vernon was on my favorite team. Thanks for doing this on him.
I highly recommend watching the 1988 NBA All Star Game, that is legendary, they played like it was a Finals game. Glad I grew up watching ball in the late 80s and 90s, so damn good.
@@CinHalCedHerChanceI can't watch today's game because there are 10 SG/SF on the damn floor. No post game at all. It just so different. Thank God for YTube because I love watching all the old games from 1985-1998. That to me is the golden era. There were five positions and everyone had a role to play from 1-12 on the roster. Every team had scorers and rebounders and the fearsome enforcers like Mahorn and Oakley. Cats like Terry Cummings who were all damn 3😂. Man those were the great years in the league to me.
He helped bring us a title and then quit on the team, but we still repeated. But we love Vernon for what he did. He was the attitude that guys like Dream, Thorpe, Horry didn't bring. Him and Cassell. Every team needs an emotional guy that gets people fired up. Mad Max was that guy for us. He came up clutch when we needed him (except for quitting on the team).
Yea Max was wiry strong and fast in the open court. Definitely could've been a 1 time allstar in the early 90s when he was averaging close to 18ppg for 2seasons .
Max, Stackhouse, Steve Blake... I could watch an hour vid focused on those guys that would fight whoever's on the court. I'm not that guy, so maybe it's why I'm interested.
I've always thought Vernon Maxwell was a descent shooter playmaker and fighsty defender when he was focused .While being a decent scorer from outside as well as going to the basket. He was similar to John Starks far as being fiery, ( erratic)wiry strong and shooting them long contested 3pointers . Starks overall looked more athletic/had more hops but Maxwell looked faster off the dribble and his quick 1st step stood out in the open court.
@laz0rama 💯 absolutely, also Maxwell had more experience playing point guard early in career with the Spurs before he went to the 2spot in Houston. Starks was a straight spark plug always on 10 more offensive aggressive than Max.
I remember in 94 he hit that 3 going out of bounds to preserve their long winning streak, that we all went outside and practiced that shot over and over again in the dark
Vernon Maxwell played defense in a somewhat different way than a typical NBA defender. He was a prior Mr. Football in Florida. Joe Dumars was also from a football background. Both men had success against Michael Jordan. You had to play physical against Michael Jordan and you have to be a master of zone defense. It's the only way to have success against Jordan or Kobe for that matter. You won't completely stop Jordan or Kobe. But, you can contain them at times. Maxwell and Dumars could get turnovers from balls intended for Jordan, disrupt plays meant for Jordan. Thus, Jordan's teammates had to account for either Maxwell or Dumars before passing the ball. The triangle was slowed down as a result
@@FuShengAlex Vernon was not as effective without Dream, no question. But, he did bother Jordan at times. The zone by nature requires great team dynamics and, careful timing. When run correctly with disguised coverages, it can cause any offensive player headaches.
I was gonna tell you that you can make episodes on players that were average players in the 80S-90S. there is a channel its called forgotten player profiles and they do a good job on this topic maybe you can do similar. Vernon is a good start 👍
I may need to re-watch...but I never saw Jordan say he was insane. I heard Smith say Jordan say he wasn't right...is that what equates to MJ calling him crazy? If I missed it...apologies; if you are taking liberties with what was said, I do not. Great video!

I think that is one of the teams that could of beaten the bulls with MJ, call me crazy. The Dream is the best center period. Tell me 1 center that is all around better.
People always say how mad max shut down Jordan and he could. Max was physically and equal in talent with jordan but just like drexler he didnt have the mental kill mode that Jordan had. Players go out to play ball. Jordan went out to destroy 🤔
Is he that guy Vernon Maxwell? Verrry
Not underrated at all
💯💯💯
My pops say Mad Max was a shooter & he’ll rock your jaw
He might not have been a top ten 2 guard while he was playing...maybe. He was a beast though. Hard as nails with a 3 ball
Mad Max interviews are hilarious.
Maxwell was a beast
They called him Mad Max for a reason 😂
Unoriginal comments suck

Loved Vernon Maxwell, hope he's doing well these days. Go Rockets!
Actually Vernon was a damn good ball player. Could score defend pass shoot and dribble
He is still the prototype for the perfect combo guard and those traits are rarely all found in one player.
Those Rockets teams had heart
Very little teams have that now
This channel ought to have way more subscribers. Absolutely amazing content.
Xavier McDaniel and Mad Max were something else.

The Legend of Madd Maxx !!
He said:
