BIRD wasn't fast, he was Quick, fast handed steals, quick elusive fakes, quickest to the rebounds, quick insane passing.

NOT ATHLETICK? He would run 2 to 5 miles a day, games not included. He was relentless.

I saw the game when Larry and Doc were battling back and the camera man showed Bird saying something to Dr.J that clearly upset Dr.J . The next time Larry tried to gard Dr.J.
The Doctor did a poster slam dunk on top of Larry's Bird head and face. Larry got upset said something back to Dr.J. And that was it Dr.J fired a heymaker blow directly to Larry Bird face.
Larry didn't say another word and avoid the Doctor.
Larry Bird is a great player although Dr.J is a straight up non trash talking good sportsmanship athlete. In perspective Bird behavior that game was if he was playing the Detroit Pistons.

You would have had to be there to understand how good Bird was, just like you had to be there to know Jordan is the greatest player ever. People never talk about Bird's actual skills. He took a last place Celtic team to first place in the division. The same team from the year previous, before McHale, before Parrish, before Dennis Johnson. In Bird's first 3 years he won Rookie of the year, MVP. and a Championship. In his next 4 years he won 2 more MVPs and 2 more Championships. In his first 3 years with the Celtics he led the team in scoring, rebounding, steals and finished 2nd in assists. In the next 3 years he led the Celtics in scoring, assists, steals, and finished 2nd in rebounds. And you want to compare this guy to Kevin Durant. I like Durant, but it is always a case of the new player is better. Someone tried to tell me Aaron Rodgers is better than Joe Montana. Whatever

I get so damn tired of hearing that Bird was not athletic!! Anyone who can get his spot on the floor against the great players he played against time and again was athletic. He certainly could jump. See highlights of his dunks or blocks. He only jumped when needed. How about jumping into the air spinning in the air to square up to the basket and draining his shot.

Larry Bird was a far better athlete than Byron Scott gives him credit. He was a 6-10 1/2 power forward who dribbled behind his back and moved on the court like a shooting guard. He would have had no trouble playing point guard on offense like Magic did. He certainly got his share of dunks and his vertical leap was actually better than Dennis Rodman. If you think Bird had no athletic ability, look at the film of him playing the Lakers in Los Angeles when Magic Johnson seems to be going for an uncontested layup and Bird runs him down from far behind and blocks his shot at the last second.

    • @olben1095
