The title is incredibly misleading because one assumes the the country of Australia has the death penalty.
Yes it does they killed millions of aborigines to rob the land
Avez Sheikh I am not condoning the atrocities of the past but that was hundreds of years ago, Australia today is one of the greatest countries in the world with the most liveable cities and some of the highest standards of living. Dwelling on the past and not looking towards the future is going to get nobody anywhere. Like I said I do not condone the atrocities of the past but I think it is reasonable to say that Australia has become a far better country than it ever was back then. You can't hold the British Empire hundreds of years ago up to 21st century standards. History is full of horrible things and I am afraid you just have to get over them, The Commonwealth of Australia is not going any where because of something that happened hundreds of years ago.

But you do get to check out and leave. Just not on your own.
You do get to leave, but not alive...full of bullet holes
you get to leave with several bullet holes in your chest. Congratulation.
Can I just view it from a distance?
@ Stephen Eringey: Something like The Hotel California. You can check out anytime but you can never leave.
Australia used to be a prison island itself hahah
So did America and Canada among other places around the world.
"The British used colonial North America as a penal colony through a system of indentured servitude. Merchants would transport the convicts and auction them off (for example) to plantation owners upon arrival in the colonies. It is estimated that some 50,000 British convicts were sent to colonial America and the majority landed in the Chesapeake colonies of Maryland and Virginia. Transported convicts represented perhaps one-quarter of all British emigrants during the 18th century."

Exactly. At some stage theyve signed to say they have read and understand the particular countries rules of entry and exit, and their laws regarding the big things like kill someone - go to jail or get executed, smuggle drugs or give it to a child - see sentence above, walk up to and punch a cop in the face - jail - depends if cop lives or if you give him a king hit and he lands wrong and its permanent lights out - well.... execution.... accidentally run over someone cos you hired a dodgy vespa = not so harsh on you perhaps but vespa owner might need to do some repairs, you might have yyo pay some hospital bills.
Australian PM revolted at prospect of legal capital punishment? He didn’t say he was revolted at prospect of millions of destroyed lives, overdose deaths, broken families, or tax dollars spent combating drugs. There is no moral high ground in the drug trade.
People seem to be overlooking the fact that the Australian Federal Police informed the Indonesian authorities that nine Australian citizens were planning to smuggle drugs out of Indonesia. The AFP did not stop the couriers from leaving Australia on this mission, nor did they await the couriers (possible) return to Australia where they would have been arrested on drug importation charges. They dobbed their own citizens to the authority of a country that has the death penalty for drug smuggling.
Well done Aussie Federal Police.

Never forget that those drug smugglers have killed millions of lives through addiction ; not to mention the ordeal that the families of the drug abusers have to go through.
Drug smugglers are not forcing drugs down anyone throats. Obviously drugs get smuggled because there is already a demand.

Good thing that Indonesia does not give into Australia's demand. Australia feels that its more powerful than Indonesia and its citizens are first class. Not only Australians, Europeans and America as well. Australian police really fucked up on this one by informing Indonesia about the crime. They could have waited for them and arrested them on the airport.

So you feel remorse for these drug smugglers. Imagine how many people their drugs have killed and the victims it has affected. The AFP did an excellent job, they knew their country's justice is flawed and unjust to the the hardworking honest living Aussie. This was the right move. The overall message we should take from all of this is that if each government body stood on the pledge to, "say what you mean and mean what you say," through the creation and administration of their own laws, the gamble and/or thrill in breaking the law would be guaranteed to extract a much higher price. I suspect that far fewer people would be willing to take that chance...
"Support for the ‘zero tolerance’ approach is partly based on the idea that Indonesia’s laws promote deterrence. However the data tell a different story.
Since the most recent execution of a convicted drug offender in April 2016, prosecution for drug trafficking in Indonesia has kept rising.
This suggests that the movement of drugs into Indonesia hasn’t slowed, despite a long and concentrated effort from authorities.
This failure has many culprits: corrupt bureaucracy within law enforcement, cultural issues within the legal field (such as tolerance of bribery), and socio-economic factors that see the poor, marginalised and victims of other crimes over-represented in the drug trade."
That's from the Jarkata Post.
In fact harsher penalties from the government especially concerning things like drugs, often backfires, galvanizing the people putting aside differences fighting as a single unit.
