  • When Shantae Johnson and Arthur Shavers embarked on their “Mudbone Grown” enterprise in 2015, they were doing more than building a farm from scratch: they were changing the narrative of what it means to be a Black farmer in Oregon, where exclusion was literally written into the state constitution.
Each Tuesday is harvest and distribution day for the elders of Portland's Life Change Church. We follow this food from farm-to-table as it nourishes deep roots of faith and community.

Excellent story. Thank you! Everybody should grow their own food or get it from folks like Shantae and Arthur.

Great story! It’s incredible how they went after a dream, thrived, and shared with their community at a time of need. Black agrarianism is beautiful to see in action this way.

Organizing that effectively, resourcefully and compassionately for such a real impact in black communities in need? I am awestruck and moved to tears at the work these amazing people are doing reclaiming the joys of being connected to the earth for the direct benefit of their communities. This segment was particularly poignant when considering the traumas of historically forced field labor and the resulting generational effects caused by the exclusion of black people from access to fundamental wealth building mechanisms and institutions - not least of which the flat out denial of land ownership. More black farmers! This is beautiful.

Reparations should begin with rectifying the past and present bans and restrictions on black real estate acquisition. From still-current de facto redlining to black servicemen not being able to participate in the GI Bill, among other racist schemes, the ability to build wealth through property has been denied because of ignorant prejudice.

Reparations should begin and end with a one-way ticket.

Actually Reparations should begin with CASH Payments then everything else. And Black people should not wait around for white ppl to finally "get it". That is counterproductive. So glad this family is doing it and passing it on. B1

Now you need to start accumulating acres and selling acres Ace familyand if it has trees on it they can use the trees to make their house then they can plant the ground raise the the crops to pay for the ground they do that for the next person and then there's people do it for the next Persian then you have God's plan only will the crops grow but you will see God's love grow as well it just keeps getting bigger a whole lot better God bless you on your quest it's obviously he has in your heart love ❤️💗

Farming is hard work. It’s easier to be a narcissistic TikTok star. I respect these folks doing what they are doing. I don’t agree with the fact that they only care about helping black veterans. I’m a veteran and race was never a factor among our fellow soldiers. Having said that, I wish these farmers all the best life can bring them. 👍🏻👍🏿
