      Hey Melissa. I learned this in class the other day. I wanted to ask you a quick question.
      My teacher taught me that the atomic number is protons and electrons while the bottom number is protons and neutrons. Am I missing something and is is possible that I misheard this? Or misunderstood? Hopefully you can explain this to me. Thanks in advance!

    • @pulkithanda833
      @pulkithanda833 3 года назад +1

      @@0797cjm Atomic no is only equal to no protons but if you see in a neutral atom the protons and electrons are equal so only in a neutral atom the atomic no is equal to no of protons and electrons. And the bottom no itself is atomic number. So your teacher told this for neutral atom only.

  • @xLOVExGODx
    @xLOVExGODx 4 года назад

    I've researched the information provided to us at 6:12 and the number of electrons is actually 8. Also, by following your example whenever using the periodic table. Unless I'm missing something but the charge according to a notable website has indicated that is ( -1 ), which would give us the equation of 9 - ( -1) = 8 for the total of electrons.

    • @melissamaribel
      @melissamaribel  4 года назад +1

      When Fluorine is in its ion form meaning it shows a F- then yes this is true but that isn’t the question. This question is showing F in its neutral state this is why the number of protons and electrons would be the same since there is no charge shown.

    • @xLOVExGODx
      @xLOVExGODx 4 года назад

      Melissa Maribel awesome! I greatly appreciate that you took the time to explain that to me because I was following the steps provided and didn’t have the same answer. 🙂
      Now, would you please explain the number of electrons for Oxygen and how you came to that conclusion? I’m having difficulty with that particular question at the moment. I’m simply doing this as practice on my own based on the set of rules that you’ve provided.

    How do we know if an element is neutral
    before finding the protons, neutrons, and electrons? In finding these for iron for example, I automatically subtracted protons from the charge but since it is neutral, the protons and electrons are equal.

    for 5:18 I got 10 for electron because the charge for "F" on my periodic table is -1. So I did ELECTRON = PROTON which is 9 - (-1) = 10
