this make me excited for the duo 3. finally seems to be polished to the point on par with other android phone
I agree! Hopinig Microsoft with update the hardware and then count me in - this is much more polished looking now.
I hope this ROM will be ported on more devices by the community, it's probably the first Android 12 UI that I genuinely like
I have a dream in which this is ported to Lumia devices, converting them to something similar to a "Surface Phone"
@ Won't be possible as Android 12 and onwards needs ARMv8 and most Lumia devices only have older ARMv4 to v7. Also same reason why the underground community building Windows 11 for older Lumia devices is at the end of road.
@@KannexMedia it is possible, there is lineage os 19 android 12L for the galaxy s3 which also has armv7 and is even older than the lumia 950.
@@robertm20 There was the Android4Lumia project back in the days but not sure what happened to it.
@@KannexMedia well. The Surface Duo ROM can be based entirely on Lineage OS's open source software.
Definitely looks more clean, and more excited if they continue with this line. Hopefully they don't abandon it
*sad Windows Phone noise*
@@SirFaceFone Windows 10 Mobile and WP8.1 reached end of life in 2018 (after doing basic security updates 2016-2018). No need to cry further and just move on like the rest of us.
They probably will abandon it but it’s got some more time before then I’d bet.
@@KannexMedia I know, but mine still works lol
@@LittleByrdEee
Yeah that's what they are going to do abandon it
Looks the way it was intended since the beginning. Smooth, Polished and Ready for Launch.
This build quality is what needs to be released to appeal to the masses but I get why they did when they did it.
lags after lags.
I don’t own a Surface Duo but I think, using Segoe UI font family in Microsoft’s Android rendition can greatly improve the UI and UX as well.
Yep, Roboto looks dated. Even Google is using their own font.
They could probably redone the blur effects too, windows acrylic and mica looks much better than regular blurring
agreed.
Love my Duo 2 and now I love it even more! Great job UI Team!
I am glad Microsoft is focusing a lot on the operating system. By the time they release a Surface Duo 3 it will prob be far more polished than the first two Duos. This is the next step that Microsoft seems to be taking attempting to replicate their early success with the Microsoft Surface lineup.
You don't own an OG Duo, correct. So you have no idea what you are talking about...
@@msp5138 I have been wanting to own one. Duo 2 is a substantive improvement to the Duo 1. Duo 1 is still excellent and great. I remember the Surface series did not see much success until the Pro 3. Were the Pro 1 and Pro 2 terribly flawed? Of course not, I remember the Pro 2 was very comfortable and easy to use having owned one myself. But the Pro 3 really optimized a lot of features like the kickstand, the Surface Pen, and the Type Cover.
@@Awesome_Aasim The OG Duo is great and the Duo 2 is not a substantial improvement worth the extra $1,000 when you can get the OG Duo for $410...
@@msp5138 Considering the features that the Duo 2 has (NFC, upgraded camera, updated processor, 5G) that the Duo 1 lacked, I would certainly say that yeah the Duo 2 is an upgrade. In terms of the form factor, both the Duo and Duo 2 are worth it, but the problems that plagued Surface Duo at the start (but not as much now) are problems that even Samsung had to deal with in their foldable lineup.
Running good on my surface duo 2, great improvements.
I like what they have done with the UI, the settings app looks fantastic!
Thank you very much for this video. I've learned more here about my device than I did from Microsoft's own website.
This feels so much nicer!
This is perfection. Microsoft, well done. Kudos to everyone who worked on this. Chef's kiss. I like this almost as much as Pixel UI, if not more.
love the fact you are rocking electric callboy
I already have the Fold 4 but I got an unlocked brand new duo for $250 and I just couldn't pass it up. I have to admit I like it more than I thought I would. The numerous updates have made a big difference from when it first came out. I'm using it as my daily driver for now and it's actually running just fine. Now that I already have t he fold I'd probably choose it but if I had bought this before I probably would have never bought the fold.
I always wanted a Duo, but this really has me intrigued
Bloody hell Microsoft, two years - TWO YEARS - and you have finally nailed it. So, I've just ordered one. Fingers crossed for me!
So I went and got a Surface Duo 1 after watching this video and a couple of others. Arrived this morning. Android 12L has made this a great device.
What an incredible second device. This is the way that Microsoft needs to focus the product. Don't bother trying to be a phone replacement but an incredible second device with 5G/4G connectivity.
So great software, great screens and connectivity. But cameras, don't need them and treat this more like a tablet than a phone.
I would have gone for Surface Duo 2, but this device is better due to the lack of camera bump and a nicer design.
This is now go-to device for work email.
Pity it took Microsoft 2 years to get there. Hopefully Surface Duo 3 perfects this form factor.
How did you get android 12 L rom?
This looks great! Kindest regards, Richard U.K
God this is amazing, made me want one.
yo that lockscreen animation is hot 🥵they should implement it too with win11
It's the native Android 12 lockscreen animation. I don't think they can port that to Windows. But I do agree, it's really a nice animation. I always admire it in my Pixel phone.
beautiful
I'm glad that with this update many bugs related to landscape apps are fixed (upside down, aspect ratio, can't unspan).
I can confirm that is working on Duo 1 as well. It looking great like Windows 11.
So Windows 11 design language are on Duos and now lets wait for Xbox Series X|S dashboard update to match that design.
Who's your provider? I'm on the AT&T Surface Duo 1. My phone is still buggy. Has it improved usability?
@@JGLCSW Im from Europe. I don't have AT&T, just unlocked. Buggy? For me is working great
@@HauTam3ki sorry, meant to say I'm not on Android 12L and my phone is very buggy still. Hopefully Android 12L improves usability. Thank you for your response.
What service are you actually on? Mine is unlocked that is how I bought it all with Amazon but I have a T-Mobile SIM SIM card and maybe I should take it out and see if it will update without the SIM card end
@@master2uall88 my Surface Duo is also unlocked, but it was originally an att variant. I'm presently on T Mobile.
I liked the Windows 11 aesthetic but it need to be polished further e.g Wallpaper and Style as Personalization, sub menus UI and UX in settings, etc
Microsoft also need to bring there windows apps to android space as well like dialer, messenger, calculator and other.
Love it. 💕
Those new icons in the Settings app looks amazing! Hope if anyone remake those icons.
Yey. Downloaded in my SD2.
THAT LOCKSCREEN ANIMATION IS AWESOME. Looks cleaner and seems like its smoother now!
Hmmm maybe worth my time to get another one of these, owned one for a few months 2 years ago and it was OK but buggy but seems pretty good now ❤
Android 12L for Surface duo LOVE it.
Looks good! Hopefully there will be a surface phone
I'm the kind of guy who wouldn't mind form factor of duo over galaxy fold, i don't even mind the specs. I believe there is a niche for foldables like this. I wish this device was accessible and priced more aggressively. Hope Microsoft puts in more effort on its next generation duo rather than abandoning it.
It's about $350
Looks nice. RIP missing launcher features.
Quick question, did they implement the 3D Fluent Emoji as well? Aside from the UI and UX, Windows's emojis are waaay superior to both Android's and iOS' emojis
Really seems that the Duo 3 might finally be on par with other flagships and a true option for many of us.
That's fine if they also make a sub $500 dual screen Duo 3. The Duo 2 pricing was far beyond the reach of many like me.
at 330 US on Amazon, I was tempted. But only one more year of security support.
Interestingly this makes me want to seriously consider the Duo 2.
But the pricing for the duo 2 is like 3x more than this one right now
Thanks 🙏
Looks good
A major UI/UX improvement over Android 10 & 11. Just wondering if this is the last OS version for the original Duo - and if so, how many years of security updates for 12L can be expected.
This is so cool! Some more upgrades for this little booklet! Hell, it looks like a phone running some sort of W11 lol
This is what I've always wanted the Duo to be. An extension of Windows running Android rather than just a Microsoft phone with a regular Android skin. Hopefully, Microsoft will make slab phones too
Just bought one for 329 euro. Its a amazing device for that price and now even android 12
The buttons on my Slim Pen Slim stopped working after the 12L update. Still works with my wife's Surface Duo on Android 11.
I still like this Surface Duo. Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to finally get one.
I bought duo 1 for $300 new 1 month ago.
Nice
Why don't they change the Battery icon and others in the status bar to be like Windows 11?
It's not out for my duo.
Nice for year 2015
Man that thing looks freaking smooth and fluid. Wow! Surface Duo is really tempting
i wish other android UIs looked like this, im really upset that not many of them use window blurs since it's already supported by android itself
One UI does
I'd love to see one screen windows surface phone
which is really nice .... nice
l really excited
pretty fancy
other fancy stuff
pretty awesome
pretty cool
Can you show the Google Messages app spanned? I'm hoping they fixed it to look like Outlook spanned.
I was the one who requested this
Will part of this update also arrive on Microsoft Launcher on the Play Store?
I hope so, for a long time MS Launcher was the best in play store
Microsoft should just use Segoe UI Variant to replace Roboto
i just realised Zac lives about 15 minutes away from where I used to live, huh
should I buy a surface duo 2 or wait for the 3?
I have been eyeballing to get a surface duo to use as a digital planner, but can’t find any info on if its possible to use the pen in the calendar app to jolt down appointments etc? Seems like this has been completely overlooked?
Can we just appreciate he likes Electric Callboy (Eskimo Callboy)
Does it change how apps act when spanned?
I hope Microsoft will release a full windows flagship.
Do non-MS apps still get confused by the middle area?
Ok. But no desktop mode? Or free or cheaper access to Windows in cloud with a laptdock or monitor??
Looks like Microsoft went with a hybrid of both the Fluent and Material You design languages.
Talk of ageing like wine
Now, what feels like years later, the SD1 has finally become a daily driver device. and then it unfortunately already reaches its EOL status this year. what a pity. hopefully MS will think about it again about the update period. It would be a real shame about the great device, which only now seems really good and finished. it doesn't have to die in a few months!
I hope they continue embracing their new smartphone designs for further evolutionary products and not repeat history with their windows phone running on 8. Even that one was ahead of its time in its software management.
Still limited to 4 rows/columns.... such a waste of bloody space
You listen to Electric Callboy? I see you're a man of culture as well.
Really sad Microsoft left out the 12L taskbar
Android 12L on the surface duo to me is basically Windows phone 11 but on Android
welcome to Windows 12
This update appears to be 12 not 12L. Setting >about. Says 12. One main difference between 12 & 12L is on 12L you get 2 columns in the notification shade. This just appears to be Android 12 for smartphones.
If you use a Galaxy Fold 4, which also ships with Android 12L, it too only says "Android 12," so ... no. "One main difference between 12 & 12L is on 12L you get 2 columns in the notification shade." that's IF the OEM chooses that. Fold 4 also doesn't have a dual-column notification shade. MS even calls it 12L on the announcement page: blogs.windows.com/devices/2022/10/24/surface-duo-update-brings-familiarity-with-windows-11-and-android-12l-improvements/
I'm disappointed the launcher is still bear bones. It's the stripped down version of the Microsoft launcher customized for Duo. But two years later you'd expect that some of the features would be brought over. I'm talking easy stuff like replacing the swipe down gesture from opening search to a customized action.
Why don’t they use the Windows 11 font and system tray icons? Strange.
No taskbar like Fold 4 :(
that unlock animation is so so so smooth and pretty
Right!
That's one of the most basic unlock animations lmao
its the stock A12 animation. Good that they didnt fiddle with it.
Hi! Zac. Would you recommend Surface Duo 2 now, after Android 12L update, when Surface Duo 3 is already due for next year? I'm considering to buy it during Black Friday sale. 🙂 Should I buy this now or wait for Surface Duo 3?
I'm considering pulling the trigger on the Duo 1 once I see someone review it running 12L until Duo 3 comes out. It'll save me money and be a secondary device to my one Plus 10 Pro until Duo 3 arrives
It's polished and quite amazing that I have started recommending it to those that were interested a few months ago. Even providing links to local Canadian stores for them to check out
Worth it for around $300 in 2022?
This is the Duo 2 phone being used, not the Duo I own the OG and I hope 12 is coming to it.
How do you come to the conclusion that the UI matches fluent design? It only shares few elements with Microsoft’s fluent design philosophy. In fact it resembles the new Material design much closer. Except in the settings app they don’t even use their fluent apps icon.
I‘m really puzzled. They said they tried to make it look like an extension of windows, but it seems they scraped that plan.
It is more inspired now to Fluent Design V2, but yeah it's not a straight up similar to Wimdows. Things like sliders are still Android 12 design, only made some slight changes like added shadows. At least it's not bad, but it surely needs more polished. The title header for example sits way towards the left.
WTH? My SD1 keeps telling me that no updates are available. I guess I'm in for a MS Surface support chat session. They're good, but I'd much rather it update without the hassle.
How do you take a screenshot on 12L the volume down and power no longer working for me
Still no support for custom icon packs....
Still waiting for them to animate the overflow menu in W11. I mean yeah it's not that important but it's one of the few things that exist directly within the windows taskbar. It should absolutely be animated like everything else there and them not doing so just comes off as lazy.
Peek mode notification doesn't seem to work now. Is there a fix for this?
8.3" unfolded. I need 11.5" at least.
So is this a launcher or more just a duo thing?
Does it actually list as 12L under the version settings? My duo is just showing 12 with no more updates
Wonder how the UI from the nokia windows phone would look on this device...
Has the file explorer entirely disappeared?
Are the icons customisable?
Where can I find that wallpaper?
hopping a phone like this but smaller
Can we download this Win11-flavored for non-Duo phones too? Say, a Pixel phone?
👍
👍
I have duo 1st one but no update so far, how can I get it?
My battery life is terrible now after the update. Anybody else experience that? Is there a fix?
How do I use the browser side by side??? Ugh
