I feel like a lot of these reviewers are forgetting that Egon’s ghost was leading Phoebe the whole way. That’s why she knew how to use the old tech and knew where to find stuff.

Also they failed the first few times they actually tried to catch a ghost. The original ghost busters caught Slimer without any practice at all, but these kids actually had to chase the Muncher multiple times to make a catch. So they didnt just write the new characters to be perfect.

Especially here on this channel they tend to do that a lot. They had a severe case of amnesia with Last Night in Soho, The Eternals and now this one. Those details they forget paint such an unfair representation of what is. It’s kind of annoying at this point how often it’s happening. Almost every review.

If ghost sightings had died down for years, I could see a possibility that the other Ghostbusters might doubt Egon. And if Egon was convinced he had to abandon his family to save the world and protect them, I totally believe he would make that decision.

Also to be fair, we don't really know whether or not Egon didn't quote on quote "go nuts" in some form, sure he was ultimately right about the town, but they did established that with Ray that Egon "believed" something was going to happen and took off, he only gave Ray a call like 10 years later trying to get him on board, meaning that he most likely discovered the pit and the countdown years after running off. Sure it's convenient that they set it up to make it so Ray at that point wouldn't believe him anymore but hey shit happens sometimes in life.

I watched Ghostbusters Afterlife a couple hours ago. It was my first time in a theatre since the start of the pandemic. I have to say . . . director Jason Reitman and his team did a pretty good job. Watching this film, you can tell that a lot of effort, care, love, and emotion went into creating it. I liked how it covered what happened from the 1980s until now. The film never really touched on the 2nd film (Ghostbusters 2) though. That was kinda odd. In a nutshell: Ghostbusters Afterlife is a fun, cool, and warm-hearted, gift to real Ghostbusters fans such as myself. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

This movie for me was a blast. It gave the vibe of an 80s adventure movie for the first 2/3. None of the characters were annoying or bad. They wrote this film to lay against the campiness and silliness of the originals without going to far. This was a great way to explore the events of the first movie and tell a new one without ruining anything. This felt just as much as a return to form and I am excited for a sequel that could explore more of this world of Ghostbusters. I agree with Alex that the film was good with the build up. I enjoyed the ending and big battle, but it’s true that they could’ve explored the original villain more.
Besides the kids not really feeling like a team or ghostbusters, Besides Spangler, nothing was to horrendous or bad. The Keymaster seen was pretty weird to begin with in the original and they went full crazy here. The original ending upon rewatch felt very rushed as well but done a lot better, so it doesn’t bother me that it ended quickly. Few nitpick things if you want to look at it critically. As someone who loves the original movie, this was a fun adventure. This is a great movie 8/10 movie for me. Surely will add to the collection and give more than 1 rewatch.
(Extra) Egons separation actually makes sense. The others were enjoying it as it made money. Once the money and business stopped they went on to have families and different jobs. They believe they beat the villain. It caused riffs between the group and they wrote him off as crazy and that he was just to into the job that wasn’t profitable anymore. Egon made the choice to put himself away to protect the ones he loved and to figure out how to end this impending doom. He didn’t know the villain was going to be the same, just that something was happening.

@@Bound4Earthreturn to form in the sense of bringing back the original cast and continuing a true ghostbusters legacy story. Instead of abandoning everything like the 2016 crapfest. And even though this movie is clearly more family friendly. It still satisfies ghostbusters fans and audiences. Ghostbusters has always been one of the more family friendly 80s classics. Just as Goonies is watched by a lot of kids but some of the material and jokes in the movie are catered towards adults.

I fully expected more at the police station with the cops reacting to this. Saw it last night, really enjoyed it. The film both advanced the story and enhanced the lore from the previous films, I thought the new characters were charming enough, I do think there were a little too many "dad" jokes which hurt the comedy for me, and the plot was a bit too formulaic/predictable but that didn't necessarily hurt the film overall. The ending scene was awesome and did make me feel something in my eye.
I do wish the teenagers a couple rows behind me would've kept quiet during the film.

Yes. This was a perfect film. It didn't force the kids on us. It gradually had them learn about the ghosts and Ghostbusters and had the original cast come in when there was a good reason to. Plus ever since Harold passed away I always said they can still make a third movie but make Egon a ghost and have him help them and when I first saw this and they had him come out and help them, I just came out of my seat and said, "yes!!!". My idea was actually made and I am so grateful. Plus I couldn't help but cry. Harold is such a genius writer. I love this movie. Best third movie in a trilogy.

I just got back from seeing it. Would probably give it an 8 or 9. A reboot done right.
    Spoilers:
It was very respectful to the original film.
Great characters. Paul Rudd was superb as a comic lead. The kids were great, though the sheriff's daughter could have been fleshed out a bit more, and I loved the mom. As a 42 year old parent, I found her relatable in a way that isn't often done well in films.
As for the ending, not going to lie, I nearly cried. Easily the most respectful and justified use of CGI of a deceased actor I've ever seen. I particularly got the impression that Jason Reitman told the actors "just say what you'd want to say to Harold if he were here". Just beautiful. Especially the line "I wish I'd picked up the phone. I miss you man" sounds more like something Ernie Hudson would have said to Harold Ramis, rather than something relevent to the script/characters. Just beautiful.
Yes, the recreation of some scenes (especially the Gozer temple) were just rehashes of the original, but for some reason this didn't feel as cheap or forced to me as it did on other films.
As someone who has been a lifelong Ghostbusters fan (and who went into the 2016 film thinking of take any addition to the franchise as welcome, then thoroughly disappointed in the unfunny car crash that turned out to be), I can't recommend it enough.

Phoebes character really made the movie for me, and just the way she connected with her grandfather and understood him/connected with him even though he wasn’t there. I do agree that the final act needed to be longer, easily add another 30 minutes and I wouldn’t have complained lol Podcast was fun, Paul Rudd always delivers, the other characters were just not fleshed out enough.
I hope we get another one with the old cast having a more prominent role, and I wouldn’t mind the new cast being in it as well (-:

Regarding the "character is in the right place at the right time" thing: I feel like that is sometimes important and the right call you make, if you bring it to the viewer's attention. What if the family hadn't moved to Summerville? What if the kids weren't nerds and didn't figure these things out? What if the characters weren't at the right place at the right time? The world would have ended. Utter annihilation by a god of the dead, nobody able to stop it, no heroes to save the day. Just rusty equipment in some dead guy's house, a scattered old crew that would've been picked off one by one (probably), and so forth. To stop the ultimate evil, you need the ultimate good to play its cards right. That means setting things in motion that will culminate with evil being stopped just barely, in one last clutch confrontation. While it is trite and cliché, that is how these things are written a lot of the time. It's hard to write a complex narrative with an actual back and forth between good and evil... and almost impossible to fit into a single film without making big sacrifices. So while I do agree with AJ's point, I am quite willing to suspent my disbelief and just think that something was at work to make these things happen.

    • @Rocket1377
      @Rocket1377 2 года назад +2

The same criticism can be applied to the first film. A group of scientists just happen to develop ghost catching technology, right when a large manifestation of ghosts are hitting the city. The Ghostbusters are in the right place, at the right time, with exactly the right equipment to deal with the problem, just when a demigod tries to destroy the world.
Sometimes coincidences have to happen in order for a story to work. Without them, there would be no story.
