My first ever car was a 2001 Nissan Maxima GLE my sophmore year of high school. Currently am a college sophmore and its still driving well with 303k miles. Will definitely upgrade to a newer model in the future.
I grew up riding snowmobiles which use a system very similar to a cvt. They sure do not bother me as long as the performance is good. A lot of the hate for them is unfounded IMO.
hate kinda stems from some of them needing to replaced but they've gotten a lot better, and in hypotheticals they are potentially way more powerful then automatic having to shift vs sitting at max rpm / HP / Torque
just bought platinum I wasn't a max fan but I must say this fucking. car is fast and nice don't sleep on this car a lot of people might get their feelings hurt thinking they gonna just come up and blow the doors off this car.
The CVT in this car doesn't bother me, because I have one in my daily driver Altima. Nissan completely knocked it out of the park with this car, and if I could afford it, I'd be going to a dealership today.
First for the people that are complaining that he cursed grow up, you all are acting like you don't live in a world where we are surrounded by swear words or use swear words yourself. Second for those that are complaining about the CVT and the front wheel drive oin this car guess what you don't have to buy it, so with that said live your life and stop coomplaing about a car that are never going to buy or probably afford. Thank you.
Buy them used. They do not hold their value at all. You can get the top of the line platinum one year old low miles about 8 grand cheaper than buying it new
I love this car, I went camping in my Maxima SL. The drive up and down those mountains was amazing and effortless, I got 34 mph coming down and 30 going up.
Great Job! Car gets a ton of compliments and always gets a premium parking spot when parking Valet next to cars that cost 2 and 3 times as much. Job Well done Nissan!
I have to say, I really like the styling of this new Maxima. I haven't been impressed with the direction Nissan has been going lately... The previous Maxima, the pre 2016 Altima, and that 2007+ Sentra to name a few. I think this Maxima looks great! I never thought I'd say that again about the Maxima after the 2003 was changed. Impressive.
I most definitely agree AWD option will make it quite a good buy considering its price. That's one thing that also struvk me when I stepped into the Maxima "did Nissan reuse the interior design scrapped by Infiniti?". I actually prefer the Maxima's interior over that of the Q50, but the Infiniti obviously has the advantage of a stronger RWD powertrain.
My dad test drove a bread new 2017 Nissan Maxima Platinum very nice car. And the Platinum gives you two sun roofs one in the front and one little one in the back. I loved and was enjoying listening to the very nice sound of that VQ 3.5 300 HP V6.
I traded in a 2012 Bmw 335i for the 2016 maxima I got the pearl black and tinted my windows!! I'm in love I've been a Bmw owner for the past 6 years but love the design of the maxima!
+thuglifezeem716 that's your opinion... not really I've had multiple issues with both bmws I have had and it's time for me to try something new since I can afford it why not
That CVT drone is like finger nails going across a gotdam chalk board. Maybe I'm just old school or nostalgic but I prefer a traditional type of automatic transmission.
When in pairing mode the touch screen doesn't work until pairing is done. But you can get out of that by pressing any of the buttons on the left and it will still pair in the back ground. The head unit itself is very responsive compared to other cars I have driven.
It was trying to connect with a phone that's why it stalled like that it does that in all touch screens. It is faster than most touch screens that I've used once everything is connected.
+pedrof830 true but Nissan labels the Maxima as a "4 door sports car", which doesn't make sense if it's a FWD car with a CVT.. I think that's the point that was trying to be made.
They done f’d up when they keep putting CVTs on all their cars even ones that don’t need it. Like the previous Pathfinder, why tf would you put a CVT in that car and the platform mate the QX60??? Huge SUVs that need traditional automatics.
Excellent Review Sofyan! I'm extremely impressed of what Nissan has done to both the exterior and interior of the new Maxima. Not to mention that the car also reminded of me of your first impression of it at the New York Auto Show last year, which was unexpectedly hilarious :D Speaking of the New York Auto Show, are you looking forward to going back again this year? - Michael
this is the first nissan to make me question my choice on my first vehicle purchase. I was so sure i wanted a Chevrolet Impala. but this Maxima has me questioning all sorts of things...
RS1 yeah, can someone confirm whether or not the newer Nissan CVTs are reliable for the long term??? Because I've kept hearing nonstop the earliest models with the CVTs were ATROCIOUS...
I would take a CVT then a DSH anyday. I had a 2010 Mark 6 GTI with a DSG and it was horrible, slammed into gear then sometimes wouldn't shift when it was time to and drove me nuts. CVT are a little winny but you have exactly the tension you need from the engine to efficiently move forward.
I just got a 2016 platinun with 40,000 miles. this car is amazing! It has everything and more. 100% recomend to anybody. Very very fast too, specially if you put it in sport mode!
It's a nice looking interior... No LED high beams or rear turn signals... No sunroof in the SR trim and that CVT. I can't wait until they start to put automatics into their cars.
I wish u guys would go back to reviewing cars from 2000-2010 Era. I understand that you guys do receive review cars but make it a special or a once in a while video. I find those much more entertaining.
god dammit nissan. i want to like this car so badly, but the CVT is just a deal breaker for me. for 38k, you aren't that far off a infiniti q50 with the new 3.0t v6
A general question: As the definition of sport car is having a rear-wheel drive and a manual transmission, I was confused why cars such as Honda Civic SI or Type R, or Audi TT (with no quattro) can be qualified as sport car since they are front wheel drive and didn't fall into the rear wheel drive "requirement"; If (and only if, because it probably won't happen because of marketing reason) the Maxima do return to a traditional automatic, or even offer a manual, can it be qualify as a sport car just like it applied to the SI and TT? Or rephasing the question: As long as there's a CVT, whatever the car is a front wheel drive or a rear wheel drive, it will not qualify as a sport car? If so, then a sport car is actually not limited to be a rear-wheel drive right? Just try to clearify, doesn't mean to defend CVT or anything. :-) Thanks!
The whole "A sports car has to have RWD and manual" is a stereotype started by a lot of "hard core" motor heads. There is more to it than RWD and manual. The car's handling is considered too. As a driver of a 2016 maxima today, I can say the drive is fairly sporty and stable. I have outran some standard chargers, challengers, and even an older BMW M class. It is NOT a Lamborghini class sports car. But it can hold its own in main line sports cars. Also, one thing he does not tall about in this review is Nissan's intelligent corner breaking that is in this car, especially in sports mode, for easier handling in turns and curves
considering purchasing a used certified '16 SL trim. im seeing them between $25k-29k with 12k-19k- miles (in the chicagoland area if it means anything). any thoughts on this value? bad buy? good buy?
His whole tone is generally positive in this review, but was generally ho hum during the Fusion Sport review. Interesting, considering the Fusion Sport is faster, handles better, is quieter, and rides better. Asian car bias?
I like this Maxima a lot :O Of course, the only Nissan car that my family has driven (and it was a rental car) was the 2017 Nissan Rogue. And that was a really good SUV, from what my dad thought, and I agree. But this Maxima looks to be a great Nissan sedan~
Hi Sofyan! I know you're not the biggest Toyota fan, but I'm interested in hearing your opinions/review on the new Prius! Hopefully you'll be able to review that if you get the chance :)
Depends if torque and horsepower are what you want. Both are very sleek, but with the price points, you get the HP and torque you pay for. Optima is quit less, and varies by model. I love that no matter whether you get the S Max or an SR, you still get the same torque and HP. I didn't want leather, so the S was perfect and price was great.
If I were a Nissan product manager, I'd leave the Altima as the sporty mid-size, and position the Maxima as a "luxury" sedan. Make the Max quiet, smooth, and larger. Why have 2 products so close in proportions? FWD? CVT? Why is the Altima still available with v6? The Max must reek in profits.
When did you shoot this? Looks like right around the time of the Blizzard of 2016. I was up there then and realized the value of our brand new Subaru Forester. :-)
12:21 - Wow, that trunk matt looks just like the one in my 2003 Maxima. And when he slams the trunk, it sounds like the trunk it breaking/rattling. My 2003 did the same thing. Always had to warn people to just lightly shut it, for some reason most people think you gotta slam trunks to close them properly. I was always annoyed at the rattle of the trunk when it was closed. Fast forward 13 years, still sounds the same. The engine idle also sounds very similar to the 3.5 L of the past. I had the 255 HP 3.5 and that thing would pull hard when you put yer foot into. Torque steer and it would burns the tires off at from a dead start. 300 HP would feel pretty good I imagine. The 5.0 L mustangs of the late 80's and 90's has less hp. Back in 2003 Maxima still came standard with Xenon HID head lights. You still gotta pay up for those on Mercedes, BWM's. Maxima is Great car. Lots of standard options you would pay extra for in many other luxury sedans.
"it's fucking nice" he said that so happily

Jesse Sacchetti Exactly I saw a SR for 24K with 12k miles at a local dealership.
Tyrone Long got em over here in FL 28k miles 17k-18k
Benito Louis really ?
Looking at a 2016 SR with 22K miles for less than $21K at one of my local dealerships. Definitely better to buy the Maxima slightly used.
I LOVE how you mention what features are come in the different models

I have to say, I really like the styling of this new Maxima. I haven't been impressed with the direction Nissan has been going lately... Yeah just the layout of the maxima is better plus the center console just looks more German to me. I wish this was in the q50.
slim b I personally like the q50's interior. I like the Max's too but to me it falls short but that's to be expected.
Justin Brown I like the q50 interior to I just wish they would have made the center consloe more like the lexus gs style or more German

Alim Felix HATTER??
Nissan should have used their 7-speed auto instead of the CVT.
Would have been to much like the Q50 at that time.
+rnorred1986 they cant for FWD transverse mounted engine, 7 speed is for RWD/AWD cars
+rnorred1986 The 7 speed isn't much better. Nissan has never been good at transmissions.
+bokkey45 It actually is if Nissan transmissions do suck than mine must be lucky still running in my 20 year old hardbody

"Sport" and CVT should never be in the same sentence.
What's the problem with the CVT trans? I apologize for my ignorance..
I know right!? Fwd with a cvt.. good job nissan on your "sport" vehicle lol
Matthew Bailey
Honda Accord also has a "Sport" version, with a CVT as well
+pedrof830 at least the accord has a manual and isn't almost 40k
+pedrof830 true but Nissan labels the Maxima as a "4 door sports car", which doesn't make sense if it's a FWD car with a CVT.. I think that's the point that was trying to be made.
Nissan done fucked up when they decided to install a damn CVT on an advertised "sporty" sedan
They done f’d up when they keep putting CVTs on all their cars even ones that don’t need it. Like the previous Pathfinder, why tf would you put a CVT in that car and the platform mate the QX60??? Huge SUVs that need traditional automatics.
I'm currently renting a 2016 Maxima SV and I swear it has gears. or is the cvt tricking me? like I can feel it, or is it going through the ratios?
The CVT has shift points to make
It feel like a geared transmission

Still hav the max?

Nope, just recently changed cars.
Had mine 4 years now (midnight sr) usually bore of cars by this time, still love it tho!
How is your experience with the CVT? Have you had any problems?
one of the best review.. but if possible pack it up in 10min even better. a car review for 20+ min!!
thanks.
Just bought one of these. CVT is only an issue if you don't play with the manual mode and are afraid of high RPM.
What is new for the 2016 model?
Cant wait for these to go into the used market for which they usually go for far less. Will make the Maximas quite a bargain.
