Review: Can The 2018 Nissan Maxima Platinum Be a Luxury Sports Sedan?

  • The Nissan Maxima can potentially play the role of luxury car, sports car, family sedan, or all three....depending on what you like. This particular 2018 Nissan Maxima Platinum Edition comes fully loaded and has a 300 HP engine with good driving dynamics. My least favorite thing was the CVT because it takes away some fun from the car but the "sport" button helped by enhancing the engine note and making it more responsive. Overall, this 2018 Maxima was very comfortable, quiet, aggressive looking, and pretty much exactly what most sedan buyers would want. It's so close in size to the Altima which makes it unique and much smaller than competitors like the Chevy Impala, Toyota Avalon, and more. If ou really want something sport, go with the Maxima SR Midnight model because it's got a sportier suspension and looks great. Stick around till the end to watch the Maxima test drive and let me know what you think!

    I've had one of each generation maxima. This gen by far is the best. This car is a beast and will put a grin on your face each time you rip it. Ice even taken mine to a local road course and joined the track club. Almost a 3 mile track with lots of turns left and right ,a long straight away and i managed to keep my Max right up the rear end of a vette, believe he said it was a 2018 vette. The guy could not believe a Max held on to a vette. Kinda surprised me some as well, but made me smile. Gotta love this car. And for the money, omg

    Some people dismiss this car because it has a CVT. I have a 2017.5 Maxima. I have about 10,000 miles on it so far. Absolutely NO complaints with performance at all. In the past I have owned a Mustang GT and SVT Cobra, BMW 323ci, all with manual tranny. My auto tranny’s have been Jaguar XJ12, Corvette, Cadillac CTS, and several SUVs. This is a very fun daily driver, and when I give it the beans it flies. If you drive in Sport mode and weren’t aware that the car is a CVT, you wouldn’t know. The only thing I’ve done besides tinting the windows is a muffler delete. It gives it a nice rumble at idle and under acceleration but is very quiet when cruising. For the price, it is just an awesome car. I’ve been averaging 27mpg in equal mixed driving. I do believe it would be better if I would keep my highway speeds below 75mph. My best mpg ever is 34.1mpg on 87 octane.

      Mr. C 2014 maxima and bought two years ago with 9k on it. Almost 60k now and have done NOTHING to this thing. Other than a brake flush and tire rotation and oil changes; NOTHING. Tires still have quite a bit of tread left too. Best mpg I’ve gotten was 29.9 on regular 87 octane and that’s even driving it hard on occasion. I have even hit pot holes with these 19s and thought for sure something would happen but this car still drives straight as an arrow.

    • @lucastherexcat
      @lucastherexcat 6 лет назад +1

      I am sure that it is a good car. Yet no one buys it. I wonder if a lack of a manual transmission or standard automatic might have something to do with that. I wonder if maybe front wheel drive might have something to do with that. I wonder if the lack of 4 wheel drive might have something to do with that. Well all that wondering has a answer and that answer is provided buy Nissan itself. Nissan's understanding of these muses of mine is the Q70.

    • @mr.c1136
      @mr.c1136 6 лет назад +1

      I live in the Northeast, where we have a higher percentage of leases vs purchase. But I believe their pricing on purchase and lease is definitely competitive with the vehicles they claim are direct competitors: Chevy Impala and Toyota Avalon.

    • @Capecodkiller
      @Capecodkiller 6 лет назад +5

      I think part of the problem with "No one buying it" is it's exclusive to the USA. So most of the time there is not a lot of hype. But for a $35-40k car new or $25-28 one year old they are worth the money for what you get. If they add an all wheel drive and a little more HP I'm buying another one! I may even still because it is such a good car.

    I purchased the 2018 SL and installed OEM rear spoiler and tinted all windows = 1 sharp looking car. I am happy with it and you don't see a lot of these cars on the road. Where the trim is located, in the dark, light illuminates from under the trim which is pretty awesome. I don't have wood trim (which I don't like in this vehicle), electric steering wheel adjustment (mine is manual), no Reverse tilt mirrors (that I am aware because never gave it a thought but will check it out), no rear auto shade, no SOS button (which I like not having this tracker), I have heated seats not cold/hot, and my seat stitching is not quilted but is sporty and beautiful nonetheless. I made a good choice in purchasing this vehicle and even after driving it off the lot it held its value because of the good deal I negotiated. BTW - never reve the engine unless its under load. LOL! Compared to my previous vehicle, the tork steer is easy, no jumping around at all. Good review.

    Love this car. I’ve leased Maxima since 1999 so I’ve had every body style at least once and the last one 09, 12, and 14. I was happy with 2p1r till I saw the 2017 Platinum. It has everything I think I’ll ever need, mirrors, warning tones, intelligent cruise control, Apple Car Play so I made the commitment to buy. 2018 doesn’t look to have made any changes. Seats are so comfortable, driving is a dream. My favorite car ever!

    I had this as a rental and I loved it to the point where I almost bought it as my next car but I couldn't wrap my head around the higher price tag. I ended up going with a 2018 Honda Accord EX which ended up being almost 6K less than the comparable Maxima trim and I found the Accord to have more features.

    This is my 7th Maxima since ‘99, 2017 Platinum black and this is the best body style yet, but not as roomy as past models. Seats are so comfortable I literally drove from Queens,NYC to Dover Delaware without a stop and I hardly moved.
    One alarming problem has arisen: the Check Engine light keeps coming on. We’ve brought it in twice to Koeppel Nissan for two weeks at a time and they still aren’t sure what was wrong. 🤞🏽it won’t happen again. Other than that it’s perfect.

    I wouldn't mind having an 8th Gen maxima as a new daily, but the Maxima hasn't been a 4DSC since 2003. No manual option, super bloaty, and heavy. You can't call the Maxima a 4DSC when it other cars would run circles around this.
    For the next gen Maxima, I'd like to see:
    AWD (if they don't add it, I'll be surprised considering the new Altima has it)
    High HP output (The 3.5 V6 should be capable of 350+ HP)
    6 SP manual for SR trim
    traditional 10 speed automatic or DCT
    less weight
    Keep the aggressive styling but ditch the floating roof
    Keep the layout of the interior and infotainment releatively the same

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 лет назад +1

      I liked your other comment about CVT/10 speed as well. I agree with you and definitely hope they add the AWD. Maybe they will get back into the 4DSC mentality again...that’d be nice. Especially since they have the Altima right below it in a lot of ways. Anyways thanks for the input and for watching!

    hint, wait till there is only one Maxima left on the lot, May to July of the next year is best, you get the best deal on the last ones. 2018 SV was $28,990 and it was on the lot for 11 months one week. Normal prices about $5K higher than that. I had two dealerships say "can't touch that price"

  • @ErwinSchrodinger64
    @ErwinSchrodinger64 6 лет назад +4

    The CVT transmission is what stopped me from purchasing this car. Instead, I went with a Honda Accord V6 6-speed manual coupe and beefed up the suspension, rims/tires, and brake system. If Nissan, at least, offered the 7-speed automatic that they offer in their Infiniti line would be a serious game changer. I'm wondering whether Nissan will eventually offer the 3.0L twin turbo that's in their arsenal. Even the lower variant of that engine offers 300 horsepower and nearly 300 ft/lbs of torque.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  6 лет назад +5

      CVT stands for a continuously variable transmission. It doesn’t have actual step gears like 1st, 2nd etc. it’s a pulley like system that has pros and cons. It’s generally more efficient, helps keep the engine at good RPMs when you need power, but negatively it usually isn’t as fun to drive, can groan or feel weird at times. Gotta Drive one to know really. Lot of people won’t care or pay any attention but some hate it

    • @IReahpZz
