    My husband makes great money as an owner operator in trucking. I tried to get him into IT. He said the money was too small for him. I guess it depends on what you're doing in trucking. He's hauling chemicals, and his contracts are very lucrative. We own two trucks.
    I have my real estate business and working in IT remotely. I take my IT money to buy more real estate. Being a veteran, I got almost all my certifications for free through various programs and bootcamps. Best decision ever.

      In the beginning it might be a paycut but in the long run it works out great especially for the family and physical health

      I feel him being a truck driver myself. Only thing is the pay cut getting into IT at entry level but IT is much more lucrative in the long run. You should tell him to try getting into it and just drive on his off time until he gets the experience to make the same money as he was driving. I mean unless he loves driving then that’s different

      I make great money driving trucks. My only complaint after 9 years is that you miss out on so much time with family. The money is good though and you can save money.

    The help desk is a great way to start our your IT career imo. Taught me a lot of things that school doesn’t teach and how to deal with users. I am a people person so I had no trouble in that area with talking. Ticketing and troubleshooting is the heart of the help desk too.

    Good stuff. My story is just about the same as your guest. I was driving trucks for 7 years and recently changed careers to the IT field. Was hard to do but got it done. Now Im a service desk analyst with 2 certs under my belt. Ready for the next position so I can learn more about the IT field.

    It seems that the grass isn't necessarily greener until we find our fit. Plenty of white collar guys who found their love in trucking and vice versa.

      @@HitNrun115 the biggest, most simple advice is just starting! Not saying the path itself will be easy but it seems like the biggest hurdle is just taking action. Ive been following any and everybody in the IT industry on all my social medias. Just google/RUclips some things in IT you’d be interested in because there are millions of things you can do. Look at some certifications for that lane that can help you just get your foot in the door and just start studying. I’ve honestly been procrastinating but I’ve been on LinkedIn and RUclips everyday reading/watching videos from different people in the field

    I can relate to this. Was an owner op and built my company to 11 trucks. Money was good until the economy shifted with the new administration. Trucks went from averaging $8-$10k a week to barely making $5k a week. Then the diesel prices skyrocketed along with insurance rates. At that point trucks barely made enough to cover expenses. Ended up closing the company due to overhead. Currently in tech sales and working towards becoming a Sales Engineer. Started meeting people making $300-$500k a year remote and realized I was missing out. I rather make that money and invest into other passive sources. Definitely beats the stress of running a trucking company of that size. I believe the sweet spot for Trucking is 3-4 trucks. Things where going well at that level. After that you need to have some serious systems in place and be extremely picky with hiring. 1 driver will ruin everything!

More people need to be exposed! A lot of our people have the ability to accomplish anything but we just lack the information!

    • @TechTualChatter
      @TechTualChatter  9 месяцев назад +3

      Depends on the helpdesk. Often times it’s a stepping stone based on what you get paid but skills you learn are invaluable for your career

    Yeah, I thought about trucking, but all of that driving would make me fall asleep behind the wheel. I have to do work that challenges me. Otherwise, I'll get bored quickly.
