I mean this is just pure participation and creating within the certain tradition or culture, not caring about arbitral "if it belongs to my culture". you know, what I'm trying to say is that maybe the real traditionalism and participating in culture is inherently tied to constant evolution and creating there something that's your own and new.

What impresses me the most is that this is LIVE (atleast from what i get), and i'm not someone who is complaining there isn't good Music these days anymore in the West, but it's like such an discrepency when you hear the edited radio/spotify Version and then you hear them Live... it sounds so off and sometimes a bit bad, and feels like a lot of the "greatness" of this songs is carried by modern technology.
This hits different, sure i bet the edited radio/spotify one is smoothed out as well... live-performance is simply more raw that's nothing you can do about it, but she can geniunly sing.

I'm almost sure the shakuhachi flute guy is just dancing and pretending to play a pre-recorded track. There's no way - i play a little shakuhachi and the flute has to be positioned perfectly against the lip to get any sound at all, the way he's waving his head and flute all over the place would definitely cause him to miss some notes even if he wasn't dancing and jumping all over the place. I've watched this dozens of times, and it finally audibly clicked with me how damn well the koto and shamisen slot in with the modern rock instruments. They just have a unique sound and percussion to them that is neither overwhelming nor is overwhelmed when all the instruments are playing. One can imagine any number of bands of a variety of styles where adding this sound would just...work. It's such a treat when something new and interesting comes together like this.

The lead guitarist is all over those harmonics, I love it. But the shamisen is INCREDIBLE. I could listen to that girl solo for an hour -- the tune she lays down is gorgeous and the speed of her picking in that little bit before she hands off at 2:43 is especially insane. Maybe the most impressive thing, though, is how many moving pieces they've got and yet they make it all work, and work *well*. They have got a LOT going on, but it all fits together with the precision of an orchestra. Crazy!
