I'd say James has made the right call - hopefully he'll inspect more carefully next time as discussing all of the damage at the time is far better to de-escalate than highlighting it when you notice it

Have a standard cost in your head to repair slight kerbing and bad kerbing . Quote them that cost and if they aren't happy invite them to go and get the wheels restored themselves.
I would have charged a bit more - £150 instead of £200 and explained the "cost" of the time taken to fix the wheels. The £50 would have demonstrated your "reasonableness" here.
Had a 65 BMW similar to that one James and lower mileage . It was mint condition with over £4200 of factory options. Made the mistake of selling it to a dealer who sold it within 24 hours. It wasn't immaculate it was pristine condition. Dealer never even needed to clean it as it was detailed with a ceramic coat and new Brembo brakes all around.
Not quite the same as I sold an R53 Cooper S privately after running out of time to attend to it. Buyer arrives, spends 45 minutes inspecting the car, then goes with me on a 30 minute test drive and goes home to think about it. An hour later, I get a call to say he'll take it. So far so good. Bear in mind this is a 20 year old car in overall good condition, but with the odd shrunken seal and attendant weepage. Buyer tells me he's a mechanic and will be maintaining the car himself. Sounds fine to me. Ho Ho and all that. Car sold as seen and as is, subsequent to his poring over it. A week later, I get a call with him complaining that the 2nd key does not work any more. And that the brake lines have surface corrosion (he was under the car for 15+ minutes when inspecting), and there is a slight exhaust leak at the entry to the silencer, and some bent gills on the radiator (see inspection observations). Oh, and what was I going to do about it? "Well mate, I am not a dealer, you claimed to have expert knowledge of all things mechanical and to be a mechanic by trade ... and would have seen all of this in your inspection. In fact, I pointed out some of the items to you at the time and you shrugged them off. Much as I appreciate you are having buyer's remorse, you are somewhat taking the Michael here. I am afraid I am not taking the car back." Bless him, he persistred foir nearly a year until throwing in the towel. Also snapped a wheel bolt some after a few months (over-torqued) and sent me a photo in high dudgeon demanding to know what sort of pup I had sold him, and yes, asking what I was going to do about it. And it went on. On checking up a little, I discover he was (is?) a tyre fitter and most likely had in mind a new car for the price of a 20 year old semi-performance vehicle. I shudder to think what he'd have tried on some poor dealer somewhere! Ah forgot to mention I went all "Chops" 🙂 and let him have 150 back apropos the 2nd key to cover purchase and coding of a replacement because I was a nice guy (aka an idiot). No doubt that was the catalyst for him to try it on with the rest!
@@ChopsGarage yeah, it was a little cheeky of him. I have a fairly soft heart and am more than willing to help out/make allowances even when I am not obliged to. I really don't know how you keep your cool dealing with " customers" that get buyers remorse, so use the warrenty to give cars they damage back to you.
I’ve driven for 20 years. In that time I’ve genuinely managed to curb an alloy twice. Once meeting a lorry on a ridiculously tight hill as the M62 was shut and having to maneuver out the way - did it slowly I just misjudge it. My fault though. Second time a similar situation where a van flew round the corner into a single lane street as I was trying to emerge and had to take emergency evasive action and slightly scraped against the curb. Probably less my fault but still I could have avoided it. In 20 years driving and 5 of those I lived on a cobbled street with high pavements and very restrictive parking. How is someone curbing two wheels on a car in a week? I don’t think I’m a great parker or driver in fact I’d say I’m bang average. But how can someone do that twice in a week?
I returned my 22 plate Peugeot after 2 years. They charged me £65 per kerbed alloy. They did say it would be more depending on how bad it was. There definately should have been a charge.
As the saying goes this job would be alright without the customers. I worked all my life in consumer electronics and have had my share of customers that try it on, and ones that will never be happy.. The problem is that word gets around that you are soft with them, but the moment you stand your ground you are all the names they can think of.
I admire how much you try to keep customers happy. However you are a business. You can't keep letting people off even when it's costing you. Or maybe you can afford to cover it all. I don't know.

Have you considered registering as a charity? The other thing you didn't mention is that this transaction adds another registered owner and that might affect the price you can get when re-marketing the Peugeot.

I am afraid I am not taking the car back."
Bless him, he persistred foir nearly a year until throwing in the towel.
Bloody hell mate what a cheek
@@ChopsGarage yeah, it was a little cheeky of him. I have a fairly soft heart and am more than willing to help out/make allowances even when I am not obliged to. Just seems reasonable to do so (the old one of treating people as you'd like them to treat you). Has bitten me a few times though, sadly.
And as said, this was on an 'open eyes' private sale! Tell you what though, I'd deal with you any time!
Car dealers need a patron saint, I'm putting you forward for it bud. Saint James.
Lol
If the cost to return it has been higher, maybe she would have kept it. Buyers remorse.
I would have probably done the same, move on and keep the piece. It’s a small world and she only has to make a negative comment here or there that can have a significant impact on a reputation. I had something similar with a Mazda!
At because you are a excellent dealer and I for one would buy a car from you if you was in my area
Like those Peugeot cars but the damn alloy design are a pain, so so easy to scuff !
any over garage if you returned a car with damage they would fob you off or put there foot down and say we charging you for the damages you have put on the car also if you put your foot down with the damage i bet she would of changed her mind and kept the car
Maybe
What's going on with audio balance? Anybody else getting full volume in the left channel and barely anthing in the right?
You're a good en James.... nice to see you're bribing Pete with Jaffa Cakes ;)
He brings them lol
@@ChopsGarage Poor Lad haha
James. Your time is worth a lot money you got to take this into consideration. I would say you where in your rights to change an admin fee
James you are a good man to do business with. But you really must for the sake of your sanity and business toughen up a bit and deal with your customers in the same way that they deal with you.
Will do
I really don't know how you keep your cool dealing with " customers" that get buyers remorse, so use the warrenty to give cars they damage back to you.
There definately should have been a charge.
you returned a car after 2 years? for what reason
As the saying goes this job would be alright without the customers.
I worked all my life in consumer electronics and have had my share of customers
that try it on, and ones that will never be happy..
The problem is that word gets around that you are soft with them, but the moment
you stand your ground you are all the names they can think of.
Very true
I admire how much you try to keep customers happy. However you are a business. You can't keep letting people off even when it's costing you. Or maybe you can afford to cover it all. I don't know.
Not really
Minute saw she lived on a terraced street the alloys weren’t going to survive. Best car for her a ‘12 Panda 169 with the 155/80 tyres on 13’ steel wheels. Preferably hammerited with wheel trims off.
The fact the customer rejected the car should be more of a concern than the fact you did not inspect all the wheels for any damage.
? I did
Your content just keep improving. Seriously impressive!
There’s a place I know well in Hertfordshire that will skim and refurbished a diamond cut wheel for £120 or £100 cash . £200 sounds a bit steep
Quite common when only one doing it
Even i'm starting to think you are going to soft on these people
That happened to our 2009 vw golf is worse than that love the video's James I bet it be an i10 James is been a long time since you had one in and I have watched the video of the red I 10 😁
James your too soft on the lady returning the Peugeot.
On the positive side James, ' Peugeot Lady ' will be someone else's problem from now on. Having said that you'll always have ' Mokka Man '!! 😉
I remember Jason at tyre Kickers having a mil light on a Peugeot the next day after he sold it, they wanted a refund but he insisted he fixed it, they weren't getting it their way (!)
Oh yes I recall
@ChopsGarage he was the total opposite to you bud, I'm a bit in between tbh.
I reckon someone told her about Puretech engines, and tha'ts why she wanted shot of it.
Possibly
just wanted to point out, I think you have a suspension issue on the White ST Fiesta - O/S/F as the wheel is sitting quite a way back - which is usually lower track control arm/wishbone has taken a whack - noticed as you where going over the 308 - my pleasure LOL. - 1:20 / 13:55
WHY is the sound all in the left speaker???
Not sure
If I returned a car it’s my choice and I would imagine the dealer would want it back how they prepared it if it was not I would expect deductions, some dealers charge or deduct £500 for restocking fee .GET TOUGH MATE .
Did you return her Bible to her with a couple of extra oil stains and a scuffed cover?
She should be charged for any damage plus miles driven this is basic stuff
As Victor would say, I don't believe it, you would sort out the car for her and she still doesn't want it,
You to good James, but maybe in future all good will come back hopely not to bit you in back 😆
She'll probably have other reasons why she doesn't want it.
I think the correct term is " Mates Rates". Problem is the customers
are not your mates.
Whats the story with the Ital you have?
Have you considered registering as a charity? The other thing you didn't mention is that this transaction adds another registered owner and that might affect the price you can get when re-marketing the Peugeot.
True
The general public all car dealers are crooks and will always rip you off and tell all their friends you are a dodgy dealer. I'm glad I've retired and out of it.
so if she cant afford future work on a car then you cant afford a car and if she wants a car where you less likely to spend money get a new car or nearly new car model so clearly this women deluded
This is the only YT channel I have consistant sound issues.
These people probably pull the same moves on every business they deal with, personally id tell her to jog on
The woman is returning the car, therefore she is no longer a customer so you don't need to keep her happy! Charge for the repairs!
True
