I disagree, the additional capital costs of a sustainable BEV warrants a nicer overall car that will last longer. This includes having a high quality interior and high tech.
@@GeorgeHaneyPMP Oh Yes, China is shipping tons an tons of them, far more than the U.S. by number of units sold. The Chinese also heavily subsidize the cost of the BEVs. For a car like the BAIC EC-series, they cover nearly 2/3s of the cost. Nearly all the Chinese are pretty crappy though. They start with poor battery life (10s of kWh) and then the battery capacity tanks after a few years. They are making disposable BEVs not sustainable BEVs. I would question if they are even environmentally positive, I would have to look into it further.
This was Elon's intended acronym. He wanted the 3 to be the Model E, but Ford has a Model E and threatened to sue him if he used it, hence the 3, and yes he intended "S3XY" to be the model line-up from the start.
That won't work very well. A Tesla Model Y, assuming it has a 75kWh battery can travel 4 miles per kWh. If you were to cover every surface of the vehicle with solar cells(this excludes windows), you could get, under absolutely perfect conditions, 1kW of peak power output from the solar array, most likely you would only get 500W of continuous solar output. If you leave your car parked for 8 hours per day, the car will receive 4kWh of energy. That is enough to drive 16 miles. Under best-case conditions, you will receive only enough energy to travel 16 miles. Alternatively, it could take a decent bite out of air-conditioner load on a hot summer day, or be used to cool the battery, but otherwise, it won't help very much. Maybe, with high-efficiency cells, a solar roof might benefit a old Nissan Leaf, since the battery is so small, that power could be used to cool down the car on a hot day(just constantly running the fans when parked could cool down the interior by 60f... And, it would take a good chunk out of the air-conditioner power usage, extending the range by not using as much battery power, but that's only on a car old enough to have a 24kWh battery.
@The Catmother A massive solar farm in space? The economics of that has been explored at length before. As of right now, even if it was technically feasible ATM, it would cost many times more than a similar array on Earth. And we can transmit power wirelessly, at 65% efficiency, using microwave magentrons and rectennas. It works, the principal is well-known, but it would have the side-effect of roasting anything underneath it.
@@GeorgeHaneyPMP 9x more energy you say? Existing high-efficiency solar panels can convert 22.5% of the sunlight that hits them into electricity. 9x more energy would mean they are converted to 202% of the sunlight that hits them, this is not possible and never will be because ot violates the laws of physics. The highest conversion efficiency that ever will be possible is 86%.

Keep telling Elon no and he will keep showing us how. Don't give up Elon, we need your vision, determination, guts and brains to show the way forward. So lucky to have you in the USA!
The thing I like about this guy is that he accomplished the impossible and he’s not one of those corporate jargon babbling overrated CEOs that get nothing done but show up and state the obvious. He’s smarter than a lot of them put together. A lot of those type of people thought they were so smart 10 years ago doubting what he could do but he proved them wrong and is still going. Creative people are way more valuable to our society than some privileged Ivy League educated ideologue who doesn’t have an innovative bone in his/her body. They may speak well but that’s all most of them can do. Those aren’t the people who move our world forward, it’s the Tesla’s and Musk types who do. Now they are seeking to destroy Musk and I kinda knew that was coming.
Elon Musk is no doubt the coolest man on the planet... I think part of his success comes from how sincere he is. This guy truly cares about the planet and the people that live on it...
Fabulous man. Fabulous story. Elon is transforming the world today as Henry Ford did it in the past by vastly improving transportation and the human condition through the success of his company which only came about by his own very hard work.
Problem is none of those companies' bikes have access to something like Superchargers. Zero has some pretty cool bikes, but who wants to wait for hours while your bike charges on longer trips?
Daniel Conescu Maybe the reason is the lack of over-the-top enthusiasm! It’s the moon landing all over again! Everyone went bonkers when we first went to the moon. Then the subsequent missions fell flat, with the exception of Apollo 13 of course... Elon did the impossible. Now this is the trend of many manufacturers. Ho-hum...
Robert Carter I’m sure that is very comforting to people that have model 3s with roof leaks, and those that accumulate dirt, panel gaps, etc on a 50k car.

I am very, very impressed with this company / range of cars / man. He stated a long time ago that his goal was to be a catalyst for change to electric in transport. Whether he/Tesla alone have been that, I could not say, but he/it surely must be a massive contributor to the changes now taking place. I would love one of these, but someone like me could only afford the smallest/least expensive one at best - and only on finance. I saw an actual Tesla car (as opposed to video or pictures) on my way to work a few days ago here in Central Japan. I am guessing it was the model S. I did not know what it was to begin with, so I rode closer and thought about overtaking it. Without a sound (the driver must have thought it amusing), it left my bike behind like a fighter plane leaving a bi-plane behind. Involuntarily I made a 'whoop-whoop' sort of sound. Now I want a Tesla car (or perhaps Honda's small electric car due to be released in 2019 if romours are to be believed).
I'm critical of the sloping back end. I like crossovers that have a hatch or wagon like door on the back. This gives it a ton of utility when loading things inside.
A standard wagon hatch is really bad aero and you don't use that extra space very often. The Model S and X have similar designs and swallow lots of cargo.
He accomplished all this becuase he wasnt scared...of the government...of the other car companies....of the time ....he set out to make a car and put it on the road and that was it...he had a purpose and delivered. He should get a Nobel prize.
LOVE IT !!! ... GREAT job and THANKS to ALL the Tesla's Team for changing the world mentality one car at a time, making it more sustainable... Cheers from Portugal 🇵🇹

Juicy Hops why would you want it? (not hating, just asking) There are cars that are a lot better and a lot cheaper (and more ecological, a gasoline car is better for the climate until 700000km driven with it, from that point the electric car is better, but almost no car has that distance driven, its because the production of electric cars is really harmful for the environment(batteries))
@@Charles-fc9gi I'm not a big eco humanist or anything. Where do you come up with that ecological number though? I used to think the same albeit not to that extent. Since then I've read reports that Elon pushed to get practically all Cobalt out of his lithium giga factory (very minimal levels compared to other/previous lithium ion tech). Cobalt is the main argument in that stat iirc. To answer your question: I don't wanna pay for service (as much); I want free charge (it's all over around here); I want 0-60 3.5s instant power in a family car that sits 7 (yaaaaas!); also I like the assist driver features, screen and updates. Sucks this Y doesn't rls in fall 2020.
Juicy Hops the 700000km i heard a lot, if you look it up you might find studies that show this, but they a bit hard to find because governments and car companies dont like these studies, they both want to go electric in the future, so they are really not a fan it, also mediacompanies like to follow the people opinions and dont want to get a bad reputation, so there arent many that promote it. And yea, i think production will get better in the future, its just that these battery companies dont have a lot of competition with other companies, so they can keep prices high and dont care if they pollute. And yea if i was you, i would probably do the same, i would just worry that the tesla wont survive more than 5-7 years in good condition, because it a bit unknown for a young company. If you live in the us, i think tesla is not so bad yes, but i live in europe and tesla is here really expensive, but German cars are much cheaper and look a lot nicer, american taste is probably that tesla is nicer i think. btw, what car do you have right now?

Elon is a mad genius completely changing the world as we know it. The best cars ever made, bar none!
If you think about it theres a Model S,3,X, and now Y. Which means that Teslas cars are S3XY 👌🏼😱
This was Elon's intended acronym. He wanted the 3 to be the Model E, but Ford has a Model E and threatened to sue him if he used it, hence the 3, and yes he intended "S3XY" to be the model line-up from the start.
Now my dream is fulfilled! I have my own Tesla Model Y! After 12 years of hard work, it’s finally mine.
Same. I bought one about a month ago and man I love it.
@@LynelSeawood Have a great time with the beast! Just a small tip-be careful with the dashboard. It can get scratched easily.
@@ilianvasiliev ok. Thanks for the tip
He should take advantage of solar power and create a self charging Tesla vehicle. ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
I always think about this...
You should look up the Lightyear One. They're doing just that :)

The Real Life Stark.
Releasing their patents to competitors, forward thinking and potentially make a big difference to the environment, with smaller players able to catch up and ignite the future of electric motoring. Doffs one's cap.
Keep telling Elon no and he will keep showing us how.
Don't give up Elon, we need your vision, determination, guts and brains to show the way forward. So lucky to have you in the USA!
This man just did more for our planet then any one man. Brilliant and gives away his truck for the world to use. Amazing!!
The future 4 models after the Y will be named: model M, model O, model F and finally the model O!
or how about MOJO
Maybe "A" for Affordable. "F" for Flying. "P" for Pickup. "V" for Van.
FOMO would work, too.
Elon Musk is no doubt the coolest man on the planet... I think part of his success comes from how sincere he is. This guy truly cares about the planet and the people that live on it...
Elon, you’ve done it again. 👏🏽
Thank you for making the cars more affordable for ordinary people and not just for rich people to afford!!!!!
Fabulous man. Fabulous story. Elon is transforming the world today as Henry Ford did it in the past by vastly improving transportation and the human condition through the success of his company which only came about by his own very hard work.
So bad ass that they open sourced their patents. Respect.
just waiting on an electric motorcycle
Joel --> Zero already has motorcycles out. www.zeromotorcycles.com/
have a look at the futuristic Johammer, made in Austria!
Harley Davidson already has the, 'Livewire' out on the market. 100% Electric.
A few people have already mentioned a few above. There are quite a few companies making electric motorcycles now.
Problem is none of those companies' bikes have access to something like Superchargers. Zero has some pretty cool bikes, but who wants to wait for hours while your bike charges on longer trips?
Thank you for posting this. I'm not sure why Tesla hasn't posted this on their own YT channel yet...
Ho-hum...
After owning a Kia Sorento & a Kia Soul the model Y will be perfect.
Robert Carter probably better reliability in the Kia
@@Rothbardo Na, Tesla solves all issues with their cars if there are any.
Robert Carter I’m sure that is very comforting to people that have model 3s with roof leaks, and those that accumulate dirt, panel gaps, etc on a 50k car.

He truly got the ball rolling, unfortunately he needs to enhance build quality so the cars compete.

I was glad to get to see the first Tesla roaster mockup at Burning Man 2007. That was significant.
its really amazing what Tesla has done, to "fuel" the need for Electric cars by big manufacturers like Toyota and Mercedes...
Wow. This is amazing. Please don't leave out Africa. Elon please start in South Africa.
I expected a Tesla Pick Up truck. Anyway, thanks for the upload.

Thanks for the upload!
LOVE IT !!!

To answer your question:
I don't wanna pay for service (as much); I want free charge (it's all over around here); I want 0-60 3.5s instant power in a family car that sits 7 (yaaaaas!); also I like the assist driver features, screen and updates. The prospects are great and wifey doesn't drive so well so it's encouraging for her.
It's quite an amazing feat.
I'm really excited on getting rid of Bimmer at 80k mi.
Can we all come to the agreement that he dance move in the beginning made this whole video 🙂☺️

*It's very simple. If Elon wrapped the Planet at the Equator with a "Plug-In" seamless Power Bus and Solar Panels. The Solar Panels on the "Lit" side, would power the Night Side with seamless power distribution. Then add 2 more "Wraps" on either side of the Equator, just north and south of the tropics.*
Nice thought but you have no idea how much energy we lose in the transmission of electricity! It's not worth to transmit electricity across oceans.

Isn't he simply AMAZING? It's amazing the way he was turned down for a job at Netscape because of apparent personality problems.
