This is probably one of the best youtube videos both for fitnes and "how to" tech that I have ever seen. No time is wasted; your illustrations of the exercises are perfectly edited to just the critical form and movement parts. You put a lot of effort into the video editing here and it shows!
I understand there was massive time invested by you to put this video together ...but 😉 it would be super nice to have a 2021 Pandemic Times update on this type of video. Focusing on gym workouts, strength workouts and what's new in Garmin world (if anything).
I've got the Forerunner 935 and have tried using the Strength and Cardio settings for my gym work. I tend to use the cardio setting, as it tracks HR and calories and then a good old pen/paper for my weights or I go into the Garmin Connect app and add it manually after my work out. As long as I can track my training time and stress to the body (HR), it fits in with my other Triathlon training and is easier to monitor. I use Cardio for both low intensity strength and conditioning session and higher intensity CrossFit style sessions. Great channel and super informative.
This is awesome! I was shaking my head looking at my same topic on a older video of mine with the rudimentary quality and came across this one of yours! Gotta love the old videos! So awesome to see how you’ve grown. Gives me hope for myself.
Great review! I think this is just the beginning of accurate strength training auto ID for Garmin. There is an option to buy the chest heart rate strap, I believe. You need 2 sensors to properly ID a more complex gym movement, for instance a pull up. i would love to suggest to Garmin to add another shoe sensor or something similar to work together with the wrist GPS to properly 'guess' the actual exercise; when wrists are not in motion; it does actually very well with current setup.
I did close press ups today and my Garmin Venu 2 read every single rep (I was blown away). 100% for bench dumbbell fly's but was not so good with rings press ups, almost reading double. So looking forward to using this watch for my workouts, definitely keeps me on track and avoids me wasting endless time looking at my phone when I should be training.
Love your reviews, getting my VivoActive 3 this week. Very thorough and I truly admire your workout routine. My quads hurt just viewing your leg day exercises!
Great video for those who wants to use their Garmin wearable in the Gym weight training. Clear illustrations and surely you are one of my favoured youtuber. VA3 seems fairly user friendly in this type of workout.
Works great on my Forerunner 945. For some exercises it miscounts reps, but it’s very easy to edit reps at the end of each set. My only complaint is some of the exercises I want to do are not in the Garmin Connect exercises library.
UPDATE: I’m not sure about the VivoActive, but the Fenix 5x now tracks my press-ups, and is usually very accurate. Within +/- 1 rep. Thanks for the video.
Is fenix 5x also with auto rep counting feature? I trade my Vivoactive 3 with instinct, unfortunately it didn't have auto rep counting like Vivoactive 3, maybe i'll try fenix 5x
Hi Des, a big shout from India. Thanks for the demo and please keep up the good work! Easily the best review. Absolutely saved me a some precious time as I also don’t have much patience with tech! I bought the Fenix 5x after your review and am in love with the cardio metrics it throws up when it comes to running, swimming or even cycling. Here’s a quick question; The weight (in the Add weight section) is set to 44 kilos for some strange reason and I don’t know how to change it. Would appreciate any help, thanks.
I have an Epix Pro but I juts disabled the rep counter and do all my strength training exercises for time instead of reps. e.g. 1 minutes of pull ups. followed by 2 minutes of push ups, followed by 1 minute of leg raises, followed by 1 minute of dips, followed by waiting for heartrate to go down to 100, repeat for 6 rounds.
Great Tutorial. The Only Issue I Have In the Fenix 6 Tutorials Is The Presenter Placing Their Fingers Simultaneously On Opposing Sides Of The Bezel Making It Difficult To Determine Which Of The Two Opposing Buttons Is Being Pushed.
Great video. You'd think they'd make use of any connected HRM Pro to help with the rep counting as the running dynamics sensors must be able to help when the watch itself isn't moving much.
Great Video! These are the most useful. Hope you do more of these giving examples on the pre-programmed exercises, and example custom ones like Crossfit or some other non-pre programmed one. Keep up the great work!!
Awesome video. Those reverse flys hurt to watch. You're putting your shoulders at risk by going through that much ROM with load. For strength training purposes, stop the movement at the moment your body makes a T shape.
I guess you'd be better off without any automatic Rep Counting and just stick to a traditional manual input in a dedicated Gym Tracking app. Garmin is the leader when it comes to Gym Workouts, but not even them can make this a completely automated process. It's just too much to ask for a Watch with some motion sensors in it. Just use the watch for the Heart Rate and SPO2 readings while working out. And leave the rep counting aside, or use another app for that as I mentioned. Thank you DesFit for this review! Seeing how much you struggled with the automatic rep counting here, I concluded that this should not be a decisive feature for a Fitness Tracker.
finally a video of what I was really looking for! I'll check out ur channel for more recent videos on the same topic. I'm looking for a fitness tracker that can can count reps properly while I'm in the gym.
I want this for lifting, but don't care about reps. If you start the activity for strength training and don't push any other buttons it will still track calories. Right? (With an added heart rate strap for accuracy of course)
Just got a Fenix 6 as a gift. Love the functionality by my God it's too much to fidget with if you are seriously training. I can barely close my hands after a set now I must fiddle with little buttons and add all sorts of metrics??? Makes it useless. May as well just go back to a written journal. Just need it to tell me where my heart rate is going.
I had to go with the Fenix 3 HR after that detailed long-term review you gave, and I found one on sale bundled with the HRM-Run strap for only $368 on Amazon. Such a deal, I definitely got lucky!
I don't know about your watch, but I have a fenix 5x and I create my strength workout in Garmin Connect. Once imported in my watch, when I select this training, my watch already knows what I'm doing and I only have to edit my reps. I hope this help :)
Hey Des. Thanks for pointing out about the weight edit. I thought it was ridiculous to press the plus key 150 times. I just noticed you can also use the tickle strip on the side of the watch to get higher numbers easier. Just FYI.
I had the Vivoactive 3 music for a bit, pretty alright at guessing the workout but it was like only 40% wrong. I recently bought a Fenix 5X and I was really surprised at how accurate it was at guessing the workouts I did, like around 70%.
Hi great video, I'm brazilian and just bought my vivoactive 3, I tried this for a Strength training. Do you know if we can create a exercise name? Because i did some exercises and aren't in the list. Sorry my English
Hey des, I'm considering a the vivoactive 3 ($209) or the amazefit stratos ($160) I do a lot of cardio workout (insanity videos) and strength training. Which one should I get? Thank you.
Great video. Thanks! Does the watch also store what you have done in weights and repetitions and show them in the next workout so you can try to do more?
Yeah, I'd like to know if you can plan a workout and just follow it and also what it does with the stats. Does it compare them with the last workout or anything?
For strength training it’ll just be a point of reference. However for other workouts such as running or cycling it will show details like your split time, cadence and it will even leave a little trophy 🏆 next to your best workouts. So your fastest mile/ 5k/ 10 k/ half marathon/ marathon or farthest runs: cycles (miles and time) etc etc will be marked with a symbol. That can be used as a way to compare
Hi @DesFit, great video. Is it possible to have the list of workouts and simply select on your Garmin which exercise you're going to do before you start each set?
Today I had my first strength training workout at the gym for the garmin forerunner 645 music. It was too much of editing here and there, that it made me rest too much. I ended up using my bodyspace app on my phone (good thing I brought my phone with me)... However, it did track my calories (I use a HR chest strap too). I don't think these watches are good for strength training. For running, cycling, and the like, perfect though.
Just tried the strength app today and it was very off. I was hoping for the same effectiveness as my moto 360 sport which uses google fit. The google fit app was way more accurate. I really wanted the V3m to do this well.
Great video. Would you know how to clear the recent menu when selecting the exercise? Also, is there a way to turn the word 'Body' off, or at least prevent it from overwriting the weight you recorded with the word body?
Hi, first of all thank you very much for all the informative and detailed reviews! Please allow me one question. I am doing strength training, treadmill running, swimming and sometimes biking or walking outdoors. I watched a ton of videos already but I am more than uncertain what kind of fitness watch best fits for that sports. based on your experience and expertise, can you please give me a hint what few models I could best look into? So far I did not use a fitness tracker at all but now want to get some more insights and improve. Any feedback would be higly appreciated! thanks and greetings from Austria
Des, I have heard that android wear 2.0 compatible watches also do a really good job with exercise detection using google fit workout. I think that would be an interesting video to see.

It's quite weird on my VA3. Once starting Strength training then press start/stop button, it will show "Paused" and only have "Done" at below screen. No "Edit", Once pressing button again, the time is running and show as Rest. No rep count, always show as rep.1.
Not a bad idea. I haven't necessarily found it to make much of a difference though at least with my latest testing in regards to rep counting or exercise identification.
Hi Des. Great video! I have a Fenix 5 Plus and have been trying the automatic rep counting quite successfully on upper body training. Since I have a Garmin foot pod, I was wondering if there is a way to use it for automatic rep counting for leg exercises. Any hope Garmin will enable this feature? It will give a good additional use for the foot pod. Maybe Ray Maker can ask Garmin to do it...
my question is: is there a way to disable set/rep counter? i just want to record my strenghth training in a freestyle mode. (using garmin instinct 2 btw)
This is probably one of the best youtube videos both for fitnes and "how to" tech that I have ever seen. No time is wasted; your illustrations of the exercises are perfectly edited to just the critical form and movement parts. You put a lot of effort into the video editing here and it shows!
Thanks David!
Your shoulder flexibility is wild
5:14 dude that is some alien-like range of motion O_O
I’ve heard that... 👽 👾😉
You’re definitely becoming one of my favourite fitness tech channels. Well done.
+Allan Van Den Berg Thanks so much! Appreciate it!
Lol those reverse flys that you do are incredible! I could never get my arms to go behind my back like that!
I understand there was massive time invested by you to put this video together ...but 😉 it would be super nice to have a 2021 Pandemic Times update on this type of video.

This is awesome! I was shaking my head looking at my same topic on a older video of mine with the rudimentary quality and came across this one of yours! Gotta love the old videos! So awesome to see how you’ve grown. Gives me hope for myself.
Yup, we definitely all grow and get better for sure! Looking forward to seeing more from you and where you go with it!
@@DesFit thanks so much! Lord I cringe so badly looking at my initial content. Soooooo bad. Keep up the great work.
This was perfect! Told me exactly what I needed to know before taking my Forerunner 945 into the gym. Love the quality of the video and audio as well.
Thanks!
I use 945 for strength work, it’s top drawer. I find I’d does found my push ups and pull ups also
Great review! I think this is just the beginning of accurate strength training auto ID for Garmin. There is an option to buy the chest heart rate strap, I believe. That intro sentence, MAN IM SO HYPED!
💪
DesFit on that note, would you actually use real time HR stats to determine if you should go harder on weights? Or just rep till failure?
Some people train this way but I don’t personally.
Another great video, you’re going to be big soon. Don’t change your style or thoroughness, you’re great!
+Charlie Hustle wow thanks so much! Appreciate it!
i've been hesitating about upgrading my fitbit charge 2 to a garmin vivoactive 3 and i think your video just convinced me
Bro wtf! Those reverse flys at 5:15 are some serious skill. My shoulders would def fall off going that far behind me
The intro really tested me
I’ve been watching your videos for a while now. Thank you for being so thorough.
Sure thing. Thanks!!
An update to this video, including the strength training profiles of other watches for comparison, would be amazing!!
👍
Love your reviews, getting my VivoActive 3 this week. Very thorough and I truly admire your workout routine. My quads hurt just viewing your leg day exercises!
+rydeaz Ha! Thanks so much! I’m actually going to be doing some videos on actual workouts as well so stay tuned!
Thanks for this video! I am about to get a Fenix 6X in the mail and was curious about strength training with it, as it is my primary form of exercise
Tried this in the gym work ok most of the time :)
Great video for those who wants to use their Garmin wearable in the Gym weight training. Clear illustrations and surely you are one of my favoured youtuber. VA3 seems fairly user friendly in this type of workout.

Very well explained in the video, Just an update, I use Foreunner 945 now and it counts the Pushups perfectly !!!
Nice!
was it relly count the push-up ?
Thanks for the video! Learnt quite a few things.

+Salvo Giuffrida sure thing.
Damn bro that ROM on them reverse flyes 🤣🤣
I’m quadruple jointed 😀
Thank you for this great review. answered my questions. I will be purchasing this watch now !

Have to agree - it's by far too complicated to try to have it be completely automated. I have to give them credit for trying though!
The strength app tracks my pushups and pull ups really well now. I think Garmin made some improvements since 2017
Outstanding! Your findings are very helpful.
Thanks!
Awesome review! Thanks!

no idea how you still alive after those reverse flyes in this video, not even kidding.

You can just use the cardio profile. The rep counter is just for people who want to track that info on the watch. 👍
Unbelievable detail as usual! Just what I expect from you now :) Thanks for keeping me informed on my new fenix HR!

garmin may use the dynamics pod to make exercise detection more accurate
Great video.. Just what I needed.. Got a. New vivoactive 3 and was pretty confused with the strength training app
+Srinivasan Ramanathan 👍
This is EXTREMELY helpful . i wish somebody did this on the galaxy watch. Question: is this the same software as the garmin marq watches?
Please update this for all the new capabilities on an EpixPro(Gen2)!
Thanks! Would love to hear if there's been an improvement to this as I know Garmin updates their software often and it's been 3 years.
Does it count burnt calories during strength training well?
please do one like this for the Apple Watch 3.
Great videos 👍🏼
+Kansokusha Kamui Thanks and will do!

Thank you so much!!! This video helped me making the decision of not buying
Best intro ever. Cracked me up.
+Tim Bennett haha Thanks!
Thank you
That rear delt fly at 5:19 huh... wow...
👍
I'd love to know which watch face that is on the fenix. It looks really nice. Good video BTW.
Great video. If the only feature I care is accurate rep counting, which model will you recommend? Thx.

Did you find one device to be more accurate than another like F5 being more accurate than the VA3 or vice versa?
This was a great video thanks :)
+Jay Thomas Thank you!
Great video. Thanks! Does the watch also store what you have done in weights and repetitions and show them in the next workout so you can try to do more?
Great detail but now needs to be updated for latest Vivoactive 3 watch.
Unfortunately no way to add information into a RUclips video :\
What do you do with the information once it tracked? How does it improve future workouts?
Yeah, I'd like to know if you can plan a workout and just follow it and also what it does with the stats. Does it compare them with the last workout or anything?
For strength training it’ll just be a point of reference. However for other workouts such as running or cycling it will show details like your split time, cadence and it will even leave a little trophy 🏆 next to your best workouts. So your fastest mile/ 5k/ 10 k/ half marathon/ marathon or farthest runs: cycles (miles and time) etc etc will be marked with a symbol.
That can be used as a way to compare
@@esotericjp well, that's disappointing. They should work on that. It'd be great if they could incorporate features of an app like Jefit onto a watch.
Hi @DesFit, great video. Is it possible to have the list of workouts and simply select on your Garmin which exercise you're going to do before you start each set?
Unfortunately not.
3:36 bro is that grips for pull ups in your room? What is that please do a video or give me the name or how you set that up
+1 I want those ceiling grips for pull ups!
It sometimes works for pushups with my Fenix 5.
Just tried the strength app today and it was very off. I was hoping for the same effectiveness as my moto 360 sport which uses google fit. The google fit app was way more accurate. I really wanted the V3m to do this well.
Can you set up your weight lifting plan BEFORE the work out??? In order to just follow it with your watch and be correct...
dimitris iliopoulos yes!
I am also looking for a fitness watch which could do better on strength training. Any suggestions?
Have the algorithms for strength weightlifting improved?
I did a review and it appears not.
Des, I have heard that android wear 2.0 compatible watches also do a really good job with exercise detection using google fit workout. I think that would be an interesting video to see.
Which ones are you interested in?
Any wear OS 2.0 compatible watch (I know you got the tic watch S already) + Google fit workout should do. It would be fun to see Google's version of exercise detection and rep counting given all their AI might vs Garmin's.
Thanks for making awesome videos!
as you have to push the button so often, does it wear out after a few years?
It's quite weird on my VA3. Once starting Strength training then press start/stop button, it will show "Paused" and only have "Done" at below screen. No "Edit", Once pressing button again, the time is running and show as Rest. No rep count, always show as rep.1.
Thanks a lot !
Have you noticed better accuracy today? Vs 2 years ago?
I just create a custom workout and send it to the watch, those reverse pec decs are just WOW btw
This app should have a 3 second countdown when you press start, so you can get into position first.
Not a bad idea. I haven't necessarily found it to make much of a difference though at least with my latest testing in regards to rep counting or exercise identification.
Great video. For this strenght training , rep counting ecc is better vivoactive 3 or 935?
Similar video for ionic?
I was thinking the same thing? Any solutions?
When you meant not accurate in that list, do you mean count is wrong or type of exercise is wrong? First one seems more important
Rep count was off from time to time but exercise recognition was not super accurate.
How does it know if watch is on left but use right to single shoulder press
my question is: is there a way to disable set/rep counter? i just want to record my strenghth training in a freestyle mode. (using garmin instinct 2 btw)
I can’t save any edit I’m doing to the activity movement when edit choose exercise
2:38 those flys man 😰
