Wow, thank you so much Boris for taking the time to write/share this. Guys like you are WHY I make these videos and share. Their is a free hunter 30. In merit island. I went to look at it yesterday but some guy in a dingy was giving his all 8hp. Lol. Oh its beached dragged anchor. Whole point was I thought of you. What would diy do?
Hi Sean, oh man , sounds like a not so easy boat to get :/ While I definitely have brainstormed a bit with all sorts of boats/sailboats…. Not many would be worth it to me to try and salvage in that situation. Especially not a 30’ hunter. So what would I do… nothing. 😬. I’d look for another project. What would I do if I need a home/ liveaboard and that was an option? Probably still nothing to be honest. There’s too many free or close to free sailboats littering the Florida waterways. With this boat Once a boat is beached ( assuming it’s in Oceanside?) salvage can be costly or quite involved if you go about it yourself. That’s not a small boat nor shallow draft. If it’s on a sand bar in the river that another story , hopefully it isn’t taking in water and your best bet is good weather , empty as much weight as possible and a full moon tide to get it off with some pulling with another vessel. Lastly, what would I do with it if it were magically brought to me on a trailer and dropped in my yard? How would I build it? Still, probably nothing. Not to say the boat doesn’t have value and a great purpose for others, but for me, it just doesn’t speak to me nor make me daydream about what it “could be “, it’s a big heavy boat that would require a TON of effort / a truck/ tools/ things on a larger scale then I’m used to and for me the end result ( a 30’ cruiser would offer me not much more then a lightweight 23-25’ sailboat hull that I can pull with my Honda and power with a 9.9 hp. Hope that all makes sense! My simple rule and what keeps me in check…. If a Honda civic can’t tow it… I don’t want it. By nature this means a lighter, simpler , less Hp and overall cheaper boat to build and own. :) Cheers and thanks for sharing!
Outstanding approachable project. Love it. What year is the OMC? Did you do much work to it? I have a 1983-25 and 1978-35. Also, can you give a few details on the deck. Plywood thinkness and in general how you prepped it. Thanks for much for the channel. Always inspiring.
Hi Michael , I’ll check to see if I can figure out the year. It was a combo of parts from different motors which I’ll break down in more detail in the next video. Included in part 2 is also more insight and details on the deck :) I think you’ll like it! Cool you run these motors as well! They’re such great motors in general and I’ve found to be easy to work on/ reliable and little power houses! Thanks for sharing! Cheers!
Hi Mitch , that’s a pretty good estimate and generally what I burn lightly loaded , maybe less if I’m not zooming around. But in waves/ loaded / high rpm I burn closer to 3 at times. The 35 hp carb likes to be fed! Haha. Cheers buddy!
@@diywaterworld So I am very familiar with the 20 to 35 hp rudes & jhonson motors. The 30 and 35 hp older 80,s and early 90,s should have a 10x13 10 x 15 prop or the 10 x 17 prop from the manufacturer. They stopped making the 17 pitch props because kids were flying and making sharp turns and getting hurt so the 17 pitch is hard to find. So a prop shop can make it happen. As an example On a old 700 pound Grumman aluminum 1754 17 ft 54 wide at the water line semi vee with a 1986 30hp evinrude with an aluminum stock 10x15 pitch prop the boat did 34 MPH , 1 person. 2 people 32 to 33 and with 3 people 31 to 32 etc with a michagan wheel ballistic 10x15p staniless race prop with hub kit HXS 118 we borrowed boat did 36 to 38 MPH with 1 person depending on current and steady 34 to 35 mph with 1 to 4 people and it did not go less then 34. . Solos and michagan wheel sell a aluminum $78 or $90 dollar 10x15 prop that I would definitely buy for that motor and boat combo you have. Keep the prop you have for when you are taking 3 or more people out. But for you and 1 person amd some gear the 10x15p will move that boat allot better. May even do fine with a load and more people. And if you get a stainless prop it will be more efficient and faster in the same pitch 10x15p as there is no flex like there is with aluminum. We had ended up getting for that 30hp motor the solas 10x15 stainless steel prop and that was the sweet spot as it was more affordable then the ballistic stainless steel prop and stronger then the stock aluminum prop with a perfect pitch for that boat. What a good idea is for your 50 MPH skiff build and any skiff you put a motor on is get one of those cheap RPM digital gauges off Amazon, you wrap a single wire from the gauge around 1 spark plug wire. And set it for a 2 stroke. It will give you the rpm reading. Then find whatever the motor you have its max RPM and always be sure the motor hits that max rpm or 200 to 600 rpm below. No less then that otherwise your lugging the motor..Your max size prop is usually 200 rpm below max rpm to right on the money, also no higher then max rpm never is not good with stock internals those meters you can take off easy and go from boat to boat engine to engine. When you up the prop size, check the rpm. If it hits max rpm go up one more size etc and keep going till you find one to big and the motor lugs. Then take one step down or back and thats the max prop for that motor with 1 person fuel for that boat etc. Remember every boats weight is different so a different prop may be needed with the same motor on a different boat.. Also Always keep a prop 2 to 3 sizes lower then your max rpm biggest prop. This will allow you to swap props when you have guests and or know you will be hauling a heavy load etc as the smaller prop will help you plain quicker with loads.. The max RPM for that 35hp you have is 5200 to 5800 RPM manufacturers specs. Same as the 30hp So you see the 200 to 600 rpm none lugging difference below max rpm. Anyway I hope my advice helps in your future builds. Love the content.
@@diywaterworld Also I just looked up the 80,s 35hp it should have came with a 10x15p that 12 pitch could be over revving the 35 as it sounds kinda small. But if the boats very heavy it may be perfect. Only way to find out is a cheap RPM hour meter from amazon or cabelas and a 10x15p prop
Loved the part where you're hauling ass and the tiller isn't working for crap. Haulin ass with no control. You keep smiling and grab the motor and steer like that. Totally dedicated to the youtube video.
Hahaha. I appreciate it ! Most folks don’t notice that. And it’s actually pretty easy to steer that way when it’s trimmed proper and running the right hight believe it or not. Cheers!.
Hahaha. Experience / and loosing my hat countless times off a boat. Lol. There’s an art to it, just gotta keep your head below a certain angle and it’ll stay on 😎😉 cheers
Well a displacement hull such as a sailboat does not plane but pushes water and an old 2 stroke motor will burn twice what a merc I/O say a 130 will burn so you are saving money on your boat cost but fuel is twice or more .
Fun video but watching you steer by hand (no functional tiller no kill switch no pfd) while wide open was pretty scary. We all get lucky until we don’t.
I can find cheap boats locally but don't have a title and Missouri requires title for boat and outboard this boat would be great to have on the Mississippi and Missouri rivers we do alot of catfishing fish off the back of the boat but damn any kind of boat aluminum wood and glass are sky high on price I'm tired of bank fishing thought about getting a kayak but they are expensive too and I can't take anyone with me to fish my 10 year old little girl probly but that's it just wish Missouri wasn't a pain in the butt to get titles for vessels or I will be out this weekend
Ha, zip ties on the tiller handle ! What could possibly go wrong 🤣 , well bro I’m just bought my project boat ! I’m building a nano skiff ! Or mini flats boat or a little pain in my azz, I got the 11’ ft ,I think it’s a 1965 Cacci craft they were made in Tampa fl, and a trailer for $250 bucks it’s the typical 3 seat fishing boat , front and back seats are hollow air bladder flotation mid seat has a hatch opening, kinda dry storage, I wanna do a front casting platform in the bow, and maybe an aft deck over the rear seat area with a poling platform, I’d like to find a 9.9 or 15 horse motor for it ( cheap ) 👈🏼 had to laugh, you started the vid showing how strong the boat is like a half inch thick in the bow then you say you didn’t want the boat to be heavy 🤣 I can pick up the front of my skiff with one hand 😄, I’m guessing it weighs about 220 , I went to Fiberglass coatings and got all my stuff for the boat I’m lucky it’s like a mile from my house , I’m just “ itching “ to get started , later 👊🏼👍

20gal tank in front PARTY IN THE BACK!!
awesome
What length is that skiff?
Loved the part where you're hauling ass and the tiller isn't working for crap. Haulin ass with no control. You keep smiling and grab the motor and steer like that. Totally dedicated to the youtube video.
Hahaha. I appreciate it ! Most folks don’t notice that. And it’s actually pretty easy to steer that way when it’s trimmed proper and running the right hight believe it or not. Cheers!.
Long tiller stand up w/original console.
That’s a damn good idea Howie!
How N D heck did your hat stay on?
Hahaha. Experience / and loosing my hat countless times off a boat. Lol. There’s an art to it, just gotta keep your head below a certain angle and it’ll stay on 😎😉 cheers
That thing needs a center console, I know what your concept is, but would be sick if that thing have center console controls on it...
Did you sell it yet
👍👍
Thanks Shawn!
12ft. Carolina build that thing!
Hahaha. Yes!!! The thought DID cross my mind. Lol.
@@diywaterworld You said you would like to try one in 14', practically a verbal contract.

🤘
And you need to fix the steering handle 😝😂😂
I can find cheap boats locally but don't have a title and Missouri requires title for boat and outboard this boat would be great to have on the Mississippi and Missouri rivers we do alot of catfishing fish off the back of the boat but damn any kind of boat aluminum wood and glass are sky high on price I'm tired of bank fishing thought about getting a kayak but they are expensive too and I can't take anyone with me to fish my 10 year old little girl probly but that's it just wish Missouri wasn't a pain in the butt to get titles for vessels or I will be out this weekend
Easy flip 🤑$$$
I love your videos. Made me start looking for a junker to start fixing up with my kid. Thank you
Nice!
Thank you!
