Home Gym: Best Mats for MMA or BJJ, How to Hang a Heavy Bag and DIY Pull-up Bar

- The "Ultimate Home Gym" is really subjective and can be any place where you are able to focus. MMA or BJJ mats are probably the only area where you can't get away with something cheap. I have always been happy with the Dollamur Flexi-roll mats. Below are links (affiliate) to all the recommendations in the video.

Question for Viewers: Do you work out at home? If so, what kind of training do you do? If not... dude...
Kettle belt training, dumbbells, stretching, shadowboxing and when my heavy bag arrives bag drills.
Body weight exercises, cardio, ( i also have bench and curl bar), shadowboxing, footwork drills, hitting bag, sparring w my dad, listening to music on max volume... I actually got used to this quarantine shit! I got a lot better during last few months of home training than last year in kickboxing and mma. Sometimes you need to train smart and analyze ur style and work on specific things u need to fix. Even tho coach is supposed to take care of that i think no one knows better whats good for me than myself if i have enough experience to know how fighting mechanics work... I actually had a lot of fun but i can't wait to go back to gym :)
I do shadow boxing, pushups and stretching. Lately I go for walks, but my waistline doesn't show it.
Have gotten the Centr Fit app 6-week free sub. I like it lots, lots of good routines geared toward the lock down and lack of equip. I also use the Brute Force sandbag along with kettlebells. Thats about all the equip I have space for. I try and keep my workouts focused. May not be the best optimal sorts of stuff, but it works for me and I like it.
I don't
And the dude is entirely warranted
I think one of the neat thing about martial arts compared to other sports is that all of the equipment and gadgets we use to train are really ancillary: As long as you have the floor and enough space to at least fit a bed into, you can train in some capacity. Sure, pushups and situps and shadowboxing might not be fancy or flashy or the most effective, but you're still fundamentally working all of the same areas. There's really no excuse not to train, even with everything that's going on.
Those boring same old exercises are the BEST exercises.
In my 2 bedroom apartment, the other room is covered in puzzle pieces. Ive got a bench, two stands, adjustable dumbells that connect to form a barbell, a free standing bad, and a double eneded bag i made using a bungee cord and a tennis ball( thanks mike) and all those purchases were under 100 dollars individually. Almost everything folds up. But honestly I'd trade it all to just have someone to hold pads with or just spar.
Dude this is the most poetic and sad post...
Seriously !!! My set up is similar too but it would be more dope if I could get my sibling to join in on it
@@wallybautista697 Lol same here bros! My little brothers who are bigger than me won't train with me at all (their 18 and 21 I'm 23...), but I am lucky to have brothers who are physically able to train ya know? And one of my brothers is going to train with me like 2-4 days a week which is great with me lol. He just wants like 15 bucks each hour which is great with me lol
@James O'Malley put up a request on facebook marketplace for people who might need the same training as you or you can pay them for it (Like $10-$30 bucks for 30min- 1hour depending on you alls requirements and such...). Or just ask a friend to train, but If you don't have friends who care to train with you I really recommend facebook marketplace as theres tons of people who would help you for free (I would lol).
I don't use Facebook but I did find a guy who owns an mma gym on craigslist. He comes to my place on a weekly basis and it's been great. Kind of a blessing in disguise. I feel good knowing I'm helping him since his gym is shutdown too
I don't even fight I'm here because this dude is so funny and entertaining
I appreciate you guys so much. Hopefully while we are laughing and having a good time maybe you kinda sorta a little bit sometimes get halfway inspired to train a tiny bit harder or slightly more often.
Yes, entertaining and useful. Thanks from Belgium
@@hard2hurt Can you post a link to that particular shade of green paint? Otherwise I just can't get motivated to train too hard. Boom son!
I fight / box but if I didn’t i probs would still watch him cause he is funny af
I also don’t currently train, but would like to. And I also keep coming Because he also always cracks me up. Snarky humor with insults but still very respectful. And yeah Mike you fuckin inspire to train me for sure. Next time I’m in Myrtle Beach I’m coming to see you.
I actually made your DIY double end bag (without wrapping a rope around the ball) and it works very well. Thanks a ton.
That's awesome to hear.
I love your home gym. Looks clean and have all the essential equipment for combat and also weight training.
terrific vid Mike. I am attempting to make a second bedroom into a home gym. Its in a condo so I cant hang anything from the ceiling so I am trying creatively to come up with heavy bag stands. I am getting back into shape and doing what I did 31 years ago which was train in complementary styles. I will be training at a BJJ and Muy thai facility 4 days a week but I will be trainging off days and weekends at home. I think one of the most valuable services you seem to deliver is that you don't mince words or give phony praise to anyone. That is a rare commodity in a trainer these days in these times of dojos and schools handing out belts like candy.
I love you icy mike, literally my favourite combat sport/ self defence go to guy!
I friggin love this channel
This channel loves you.
He went full Mr. Rodgers at the end! Respect! Welcome to your neighborhood!
Everyone needs a starting point, and I love this!
"Just remeber kids, not all pool noodles are created equal"
You convinced me,although I live in a nearly diminute flat, Im going to try and make space for a home gym
This is hands down the best home gym video I've ever seen. Thank you for sharing your tips. Trying to decide on a heavy bag...any opinions of the Title Fighting Fresh heavy bag (great angles on it)?
That’s a dope set up!
Great video! From a ghetto fabulous miser, who is cheap af, this is a great and very true video. It has to be your thing, that YOU enjoy, you don't need to spend a lot of money on it, make it fancy etc, you just have to DO IT. Absolutely, if all you can afford or have is two concrete filled buckets with a bar between them, that's weight. It will totally do what any other weight will do. A great place to pick up cheap weights, is used. Go to a Salvation Army store or a second hand store and get those cheapy dumbbells and bench weights, that are plastic shell gold/tan in colour usually and low and behold, weighted/filled with concrete, lol.
Pool noodles are AWESOME bumpers, yeah. Used them on the edges of my canoe for that reason and they turned out to be good for two reasons. They were originally installed on it as a typical boat side bumper for approaching docks etc. but they turned out to be the absolute cheapest padding for strapping said canoe to roof of car. The minimum, for an actual set of rubber roof bumpers was no less than $50. Fat pool noodles, $4 each, lol. They worked fine too, as good as any rubber roof canoe cushions.
Coach one day man, I'd love to come train at your studio once society reboots lol. One of the realest dudes in the game. Maybe you can hold a seminar for your RUclips fans.
Definitely. Hope we get to train together soon.
Great video man
I've got an old school vertical leg press, a chin up frame, an incline and flat bench, hyperextention bench and about 300lb of weights and dumbbells, my sons use it now and i occasionally come in and bench heavier than them just to show them whose boss still ;)
Lol and then you're sore for a week?
@@IcyMikeP i usually jack my shoulder up taking them on but i never tell them that
Best part of video. The church is not a building!! Love it. !!!!
Bad ass video… got some great ideas…. 👍🏼
God I was just wondering what kind of mats I should get. I was looking at we sell mats, and some other guys, and then I saw this thumb nail. I thought excellent, timing couldn’t be better, Then I realized I was 37 hours early
(Hint: try the description)
I would recommend the 3/4 inch puzzle mats from Walmart. I bought 196 sq ft for like $120
“ITS JUST A BOX” 😂😂 So true, people dropping hundreds for a name on a box
TheGentlemanDrummer I wish I had a box. Unfortunately but it’s first world problems. Keep up the good work. New to channel. 1 week in. 👍👊
They're mostly paying for storing and shipping that thing.
@@shiftylad9938 welcome to the squad homie.
I have a nice home gym that I used for weight lifting for years. everything a weight lifter needs. last year I started changing things around in there to accommodate Muay thai training. a Thai style heavy bag station with the nice Thai style floor mats. one of them swing and dodge sand bag things. and a lot of muay thai equipment. including my most recent purchase, a pair of used Title MMA training pads for 50 bucks. now just to find time to practice.
Hey Man here from Sean C. livestream on Facebook. Love the channel keep crushing it!
Hey Zenna! Glad you found your way over! Looking forward to checking out your upcoming videos.
thank you,, I have the 5 x 10 role out mats from the judo studio before it bought it's own building and put down a permanent sprung floor. And yes I need to set out a time for training.
So... where are we at on that?
@@IcyMikeP getting a little better. Only issue is I get quite the work out at work. Not the best cardio but it does leave with not much energy in the evening. But I'm finding a light work out a 4 AM, is a good way to get the body ready for the day. Good thing my work outs are more about my mental well being than prepping for combat sports
Thanks Mike
It's funny cause my garage gym is like yours lol. Cept more horse stall mats. I just attach the rings to the rack tho and also use that for my pull up bar. I have also created a tricep pulldown/kickback system with pulleys, steel cable wrapped in vinyl and a weight pin.
Nice video, awesome home gym setup. Do you do anything to keep it cool in the summer? Fan, AC, or just open the doors and embrace the suffering?
He is just a real life Johhny Lawrence it’s so cool hahahaha
Good for you men I have been looking a place to rent and all of them very expensive it is hard to find a place in order to open a martial art school
Thank you for the quality content you put out. Please, can you tell me if you prefer the dollumar smooth or tatami surface and the velcro option or not? I want to practice stand up without slipping, jujitsu without rug burns, and training without mats moving. Again, thank you.
Wow these kettlebells look awesome !
Yes they do
@@hard2hurt where did you buy them?
Has anything changed in the 2 years since you posted this? If so , I would definitely like to see an updated home gym video!
I moved my home gym from the nice warm basement to my detached garage right before winter (put a movie theater in it's place) and now I'm sad. It's a huge garage and a great space for a gym/dojo but when it's 40 below outside in Wisconsin, it's 40 below inside the gym, and that's just too damn cold. Something to consider if you live in colder climates because I'm going to have to spend some serious coin to make it 4 seasons ready (garage is worth it at least).
I had to sell about 90% of my garage gym stuff, I had jerk blocks 1,000lbs of bumper plates 3 bars concept 2 rower I had kettlebells 35,45,55,72 I had a yoke and a GHD. So now I have one bar 160lbs of bumpers I made a Bulgarian sand bag to replace kettlebells
Home gym. Yeah yeah yeah. MORE TACTICAL WHIP VIDEOS!!!
I feel like a waitress who just got slapped on the ass.
Im Contented with that Gym you have
i can lift weights like squats ,bench press and MMA Gears and Equipment🙏😊
Well you can't have this one you have to make your own.
Thanks for this video... For all the wanna-be/would-be's excuses don't excuse anyone. I've been without a proper gym for years now. As of today, my gym is a mat on the ground beneath a tree. The tree is my heavy bag/makiwara board. I'm building a lean-to for my future heavy bag and workout equipment. No excuses, just get at it!
For plyo box there's instructions on RUclips how to make them without any tools beside a drill. You can get home Depot to do the cuts. They will do couple cuts for free and 50 cents for additional
Best Icy Mike quote "No, you don't want any of this smoke on X-Men vs Street Fighter"
I have an Everlast Power Core that I killed. I did a spinning heel hook and tore it off the bag stand. It's supported by thin nylon straps, not the usual D-rings and Chains. It's now just like yours, laying on it's side. It gets used for some ground and pound stuff now. Mike you forgot to tell us about the Archery target.
Dude... The day after I shot this the strap on mine ripped.
@@IcyMikeP jinx? Sorry.
He looked like an aggressive mr Rogers at the end when he put his shoes on
Me and you duking it out on street fighter Mike?
Only way i would stand a chance.
Anyway, I really appreciate this video, it actually helped me out a lot with motivation.
Yo Mike, I finally talked my parents into letting me turn my garage into a little home gym. If I do the same thing you did with the 2x10 across my ceiling joists (I live in a one story) will that 2x10 support weight in different spots if I wanted to hang multiple bags?
I am thinking about putting the Dolomar Flexi roll mat or something like it on top of my 4 x 6 horse stall mats.
Man when able I would love to get a workout in with you/training anywhere
I was looking at the arcade game at the very moment he goes "Hey! You're looking at this?"......spooky almost......😂
Do you have a recommendation for a Thai bag? Looking to finish my garage and build a little home training area with a Thai bag, pull up bar and maybe some TRX straps or a band set up.
My ultimate home gym: pull up bar, dip bars, parallettes, gymnastic rings, kettle bells, wobble board, Swiss ball, skipping rope, yoga blocks and mats. Thoughts please.
The water heater is very cool! Works well? Which brand is it?🤔🌊
lol gptt?
New hero
Fucking love this dude. Keeping things real
About to buy some tatami judo mats that are 6.5ft x 9.5ft but im gonna be using it as a bed aswell because i have no space and nowhere to do my mma training.
Already have the weights but im gonna get a rack 2.
Just missing a banana bag
i just got a cheap puzzle like floor 60 cm x 60 cm, it's 4 pieces of it. It's enough for my room, i put them down when i train, i put them out in the sun when i'm done while i take the shower then i bring them back in
Ummmm can we also comment on the street fighter arcade in the background! I definitely like that with the home gym!
Can you show what kind of workouts you do on the rings?
search hard2hurt olympic rings I did a video a LONG time ago on some of the things you can do with them.
When are you going to do a video with Fight Tips?
My home workout started as $50 of weights and a rusty bar found in my shop. Now its $150 of weights and a rusty bar i found in my shop. Oh and a piece of plywood for punching practice.
Bro what paint and color is that green on the walls? Been looking for a similar color just like it for my garage too
I see you have short pool noodles next to other boxing gear. Head movement drilling I assume? Saw that one on fight tips myself
Can you do a review on the zap came? Ive been curious about it because I wanted to take up bartitsu (also worth looking into) and wanted something nonlethal to use with it because I live in a shady area
lol sounds fun
Whats the square footage of the gym? What would you do diffrent with less space ore with more space?
What kind of power rack do you have? How much did you pay for it and how tall is the pull up bar height?
Nice to see Bill burr working out.
what is the squat and bench thingy in the back
Mike is 100% right about the plates are plates thing. Go to craigslist or marketplace, find some cheapo weights, and bring a scale to make sure the weight is close to what it says. Don't wanna be buying a 45 pound plate that weights 42 pound cause it'll fuck with your progression.
That's kinda the opposite of what I said. I am saying it doesn't matter if your 45 pound plate weighs 42 pounds because you'll add your 2.5 pound plates that might way 2.67 pound plates next week, and so on and so forth. It doesn't matter what they weigh as long as you are adding more. Now if you work out in different places maybe then it matters.
Can I order the horse stall matt? Everywhere I look it's out of order. Any recommendations?
What is a good size punching bag for beginners
what dimensions would you say the gym and mma area takes up? 20x10? 16x10? I want to replicate pretty much the same setup as you but for boxing
My home was built in the mid 50's and I've done renovations to it. I'm not comfortable hanging a heavy bag on the ceilings in my house. Would a heavy bag and stand suffice?
Hey icymike let's go hard2hurt xmen vs sf match bro I think your fans would want that smoke with you lol great show and channel brother
You can get 270 square feet of 1/2-inch thick carpet padding from Home Depot for $100. If you do the monkey math, you can cut up that carpet padding into THREE 9.5ft x 9.5ft pads, which you can stack on top of each other to create one large 90 square foot base mat 1.5" thick. That's $100 and you have an impact base layer under your roll-out mats for Judo throws.
Perhaps you could include your other channel in your "CHANNELS" tab.
its icy mike i think
Good call.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I saw a bow target in there. who's the archer in the family?
My home gym is a mud patch under a tree that I've hung a heavy bag and pullup bar from. Sucks in the rain.
That sounds awesome.
How do you know where the floor joists are....?
I wanna hang a heavy bag but I am completely uneducated on this kind of stuff.... and I’m afraid to fuck up my ceiling
You don't even need to be bald to cut your head on a sharp corner like that. I did that in a strip mall dojo and got a picture of me bleeding from the top of my dome to commemorate the fact I couldn't keep training that day. Also that spring is only how much? Snapping one of them up asap.
My home gym is starting to get a bit crowded. Grampy had to move in with us and that meant we salvaged a bunch of his stuff which ended up in the same area I play in. My workout area is fine but the entertainment section where I keep the computer and the stand up arcade machine filled up a bit. I did get the mini fridge on the frame of an old grill though so I can roll that around whereever, and it's still in the fun zone and not in the work zone. I should do something with that foam that got sent up there as well, probably cannibalize it for my own bed by cutting it down to size so I can sleep super comfy. After that, I gotta fix my pull up bar and the treadmill (yes, I actually used the treadmill and not just as an anchor) and I should be fully operational once again.
What's funny is all I do is Bas Rutten workout routines. Usually the boxing ones as well. I really need to stretch my legs regularly again.
No bs home gym, not the best but will get the job done. My same concept
Nice floor mats.
It's good to avoid those interlocking rubber mats. Absolute toe destroyers. And too bloody hard on you in takedowns.
The puzzle ones?
Yeah those suck.
What do I do when the ceiling in my house is not able to support a heavy bag?
Hang it from a tree.
What would you recommend for some one who has really high ceilings in the garage and mounting it at the top is not feasible?
Get some sort of metal structure or pole mounted on the walls so that its low enough for a punching bag, the mma gym I used to go to had that. They seemed to have no problems whatsoever, with even 4 or 5 bags hanging on. They used to have it mounted on the walls, as well as two evenly spaced poles into the floor between the bags. Not as good as this guys, but still pretty good.
I live in an apartment and I am not allowed to mount things on the roof at all, so I have a stand. It doesn't give me 360 degrees of freedom, but the legs are wide enough to give me greater than 180 degrees
My last setup (stayed with the house when it sold) was a 4x4 wooden frame. I made it 6 feet on a side with a bag station on each side. I also have a really high ceiling at my new place and may go the same route again (perhaps 8 feet on a side with 4x6 uppers instead)
Hey Mike! How do I get my power level over 9000?
lol I dunno man. When I figure it out I'll make a video on it.
Yo Mike! Have you ever rested your maxes in the deadlift, squat and bench?
•

Too bad retailers are price gouging fitness equipment.
Yeah I did a livestream a couple weeks ago going through all the stuff that was still available and not gouged.
