WHEN IT RAINS IT POURS | LURE FISHING FOR BASS IN WINTER | MEGABASS ZONK GATARIDE 120
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 окт 2024
- This session was from a day back in December, just before Christmas. I headed down to a mark in the pouring rain to do some lure fishing for bass. The lure of choice for that session would be the Megabass Zonk Gataride 120 in Pearl. This lure would be great for the conditions as the water was a little murky and the lure vibrates erratically on the retrieve.
I'd be into a fish on the first cast and the action didn’t stop there. Tune in to the video to see how many bass I managed to catch that day and don’t forget to hit the 'LIKE' button if this is your kind of thing!
Thanks for watching and see you on the next one 🎣

Firstly sorry to hear you have a personal issue that brings you sadness, secondly I too have had some bad news as being diagnosed with 2 rare terminal blood cancers that have stopped me fishing so this is a huge thank you for your videos as they allow me to still enjoy what i love to do buddy, I have just brought myself some new lure fishing rods and reels set up to keep my positivity that I will fight this and get some quality of life back to allow me to fish again. I just have to now get some lures and would kindly ask what you would recommend please. I live in the south of the uk, I hope you life worries get sorted Cal as you seem a great guy and deserve it .
best wishes John.
Hope you’re back at it soon Johnno 👍
@@MetalDetectingTheUK thank you so much me too :)
Wow.. Thank you for your concern mate! I'm so sorry to hear about your illness.. I can’t imagine what you’re going through right now and I truly hope you can get out and do what you love to do sometime soon! I'm glad something as little as this video can give you a bit of enjoyment for a few minutes and get you thinking about fishing.
I'm obviously not familiar with your part of coastline but I'd recommend just getting the basics and going from there. Maybe some savage gear sand eels as they're relatively cheap and they work very well. There are so many lures it’s hard to suggest just a couple! Look on mrfishjersey.com and have a browse through the website. Mick, the guy who runs it really knows his stuff and gives a bit of detail on each lure. You can always message him on facebook, he's always happy to give advice if you're not too sure about something. There are plenty of lures on his site and I'm sure you'll find something that suits your budget.
If you ever need any advice or just a chat then please feel free to message me on instagram @ fishing_with_cal
All the best buddy, I hope you can hook into some bass again soon!
Sorry to hear it's been a rough ride recently, I hope the New Year brings you better times, great to see you out fishing again, what a session. Which version of the Gataride do you use? I believe there is two ( Hi Pitch & Yoro-Yoro). I don't have a Zonk but was recommended the standard version over the Gataride as apparently the Folding lip is quite fragile and far more prone to breaking. Is there any truth in this? All the best
Hi mate and thanks a lot. Yes there’s truth in that. The lip is fragile so you do need to take a bit of care when using it. If it breaks then it's game over for the lure as it wont swim properly anymore. I have the High Pitch version yeah. I prefer the gataride because you can use it in very shallow water whereas the other version swims a bit deeper. Still a great lure, however, I use the gataride from the shore and the yoro from the boat.
Great video as always. Love your work man. Remember, the bad days always pass and the good ones are ahead👍
Thanks mate, much appreciated. That's true yeah 👌🏻
Cracking video mate 🔥🔥
Cheers mate! About to catch up on your recent vids too 🔥
Hi Cal!
Where is this location?
Thank you!
It’s in Guernsey in the Channel Islands.
Amazing how much difference you can see between the beginning and the end of this video. Amazing how much happiness a cracking fishing day can give us😂
Tight lines pal 👌👍
Great video mate some lovely bass there the zonk kills for bass eh 👍👍🎣🔥
9 hooks = a high potential for damage. Just use a single barbless.
Yeah that's true and I do plan on ordering some singles to replace the trebles. They're a nightmare!
Uk bass fishing brings out the worse in some people.
I have a neighbour who bragged about his 'secret spot' takes his 6, 8, and 12 year old kids down with him and claims that it is legitimate to take 8 bass home with him.
Clocked him couple years ago on his driveway manically cleaning a pile of 16+ bass with a stack of roe next to him and when I mentioned it was a shame to take so many actively reproductive fish he claimed he was helping a friend who had a commercial license. BS
Last year I caught my first bass on a lure walking distance from my seaside home and he was desperate to know which groyne I fished from. When I asked about his secret spot what a huge surprise it was a blank all summer. 🤢🤮
Hope you enjoyed the holidays and your Birthday Cal, and things have brightened up for you mate! Another awesome video, fantastic camera work, brilliantly narrated and edited and spot on editing. It always almost feels I'm pulling in the fish myself!! Not much bass this time of year southern Ireland so great to see some action in your vids. Just class
Thanks a lot, I appreciate your comment 👍🏼 There’s only so much you can do with a couple of GoPros on your own but it gets the job done. I’m glad you liked the video. Cheers mate!
I’m trying to get into fishing just to for mental health. Wouldn’t you recommend it?
3 hameçons triples pour 1 poisson ??? Rien de mieux pour massacrer la nature ! 👎🏼... No-Kill ? Lol !
What a session,Perfect conditions for fishing but what a awesome spot to fish ... boy they were queing up for that lure happy days.
Thanks for sharing.
Haha, right place right time I think. Gotta love those days!
Hi Cal, where can you purchase these fabled zonks?
Same birthday as me mate👊🏽 keep them coming pal🎣🎣
Cheers Cal what a session man it must be awesome to have fishing like that I your doorstep ... Hope all is well with you mate, keep doing what you enjoy and take care 👍🎣🎣
Thanks mate. Yeah it’s definitely nice to be so close to different spots. Especially when the fish are there! 👍🏼🎣
Nothing like a bit of fishing to take your mind off all the crap life throws at you. Keep it up buddy, you're doing fantastic 🎣👍
Very well said! 👍🏼👍🏼🎣
Salut tres Jolie video bravo 👍👌

What an incredible session ... and in the middle of winter! Well done mate! Then there was that weather! Proper indeed you are! Always enjoy your episodes - please keep the great content coming 🍿 - Happy new year, mate! Cheers - SMITHY 😉🤙🎣🐟
Thanks Smithy! It was a fun little session while the bass were there. Hopefully it continues through the year. Cheers mate, tight lines! 🎣🎣
Just my opinion (relatively new to fishing), and first time watching any of your videos, but 9 hooks seems really excessive - I was told if a bass bleeds then there's a high chance it dies back in the water?
Very jealous of you having that kind of fishing in December though! 👍
I’ve just changed the trebles on my hard lures to singles. Do you need 3 trebles on one lure.. No.
Sometimes they do cause unnecessary damage to the fish yeah.
If a bass is bleeding from the gills then yes, that’s serious damage and the chance of survival is slim.
Singles are far better for causing less damage for sure but you will miss more fish.
hi mate, where are you fishing ? are you in the UK or no
hope your birthday went well nice vid
Always look forward to your videos Cal and this was so good👍🎣💪 keep up the good work and here’s to your next video…well done xx
Thanks Angela, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Much appreciated 🎣
Sorry to hear you've had some problem's Cal, but if this session was anything to go by, the New Year looks bright🎣👍
Thanks 🤙🏼🎣
I thought you cought a ufo (unidentified fish on).
Great video again Cal,wonderful session! Happy New Year to you and high expectations for the 2023 season 🤞
Cheers mate. Happy new year 🎣
Just want to say thanks for your vids bud . Guernsey is the place I would love to fish . Could you suggest any reasonable bnb near by for my wife and I as my wife said that guernsey is somewhere she would like to go for a short break. By the way I watch all your stuff .better still love to catch up with you if we did holiday in beautiful guernsey.
Hi mate, thanks a lot for watching the videos I appreciate it! I'm not too sure as far as BnB's go, I think you’d be best to just google them and see whats available. I know the hotels are pretty expensive, Guernsey in general is quite an expensive place to visit. I'm sure you’d be able to find something suitable if you did plan a short break here. Remember to bring your rod! 🎣
Great Fishing channel. I watch all your videos and learn too much. The techniques of bass fishing is very similiar to Turkey. I want to ask you that what is the exact model of your rod, there are too many differen shimano aernos in 9 foot here. Also what is the water degree in there at video fishing date. Thanks
Thanks mate. The rod is the 9ft 7-35g version. It’s a nice rod to use, especially for topwater lures and divers. The water temp is 10 degrees now. Cheers 👍🏼
Nothing like a bit if fishing therapy.Hope I dont seem like a knob but would you consider using single barbless hooks on that lure? as Im sure if you were a fish you would prefer that.
Hi mate, I've actually ordered some singles to replace the trebles on a few of my hard lures. I agree, a lot less damage and also a lot easier to unhook the fish. Cheers.
Love your videos mate, something quite therapeutic about fishing in the rain.
Which coast are you on if you don’t mind me asking? I fish the east of England and there’s next to no bass 😔
Thanks a lot mate. Yeah fishing in the rain can be quite relaxing as long as the wind isn’t howling. I'm in Guernsey in the Channel Islands.
Brilliant video and fishes . !!! Thanks for the release all :) I just wonder and want to ask that what is the retain limit for bass for a day for UK . ? Thanks in advance .
Thanks mate. Uk regulations are minimum 42cm and I believe it’s 2 per day except for between December 1st and March 1st (I think!?) I’m not in the Uk, I’m in guernsey so we have separate rules. There aren’t any regulations from the shore over here apart from the minimum 42cm size.
I'm surprised by the field similar to Japan
this fish is Blackfin Sea Perch?
They’re Seabass 👍🏼
Good on ya Cal, great session!
Hope the personal issues sort themselves out my friend, all the very best to you Sir!
Thank you mate, times a healer and all that. The fishing helps! 🎣
Happy belated birthday hope your problems are getting sorted ….great session think I might get out …even tho it’s January

Thanks mate, it was worth getting wet for 🎣
It's 11 pm. I live near the beaches of Alabama and only know nearshore and offshore fishing, know nothing about the UK or jetty fishing, but I know this guy's hardcore and knows what he's doing and I'm here for it
wIL BE NICE TO SHARE SPOT TO
Fantastic video mate, thoroughly enjoyable. Tight lines and plenty more Bass in 2023
Hi Cal. I've just watched your video and really enjoyed it. Some brilliant bass there. Well done. I've just started getting a collection of bass lures and shads. I've been fishing for nearly 60 years but not done much bass fishing. So I'm looking forward to my fishing trip in June. Hopefully ill catch some Bass after watching your video and getting a few tips. Sorry you have been having a few problems and hope everything ok now. All the best and tight lines.
Hi mate. Thanks for checking out the video! Lure collecting for bass fishing is never ending I’m afraid 🤣 You can never have too many haha. Good luck on the bass, I hope you manage to find a few. Cheers 👍🏼
@@FISHINGWITHCAL Thanks Cal. Yes it's addictive I've spent a few quid on bass lures and Shads and hopefully I find the Bass. Like you I'm all for catch and release. I'm in the UK and visit Brixham Devon 3 or 4 times a year. Thank you for sharing your videos and taking the time to put them together. Top man 👍👍 I've subscribed to your channel take care Mate. 👍👍🎣🎣🎣
Beautiful video. I am a lake/river fisherman in Quebec. Will be in France this summer for 2 months and planning to fish the Med. I only have 10 or 15 lb braid on 2 different reels ( both 3000 size ). I use 16lb Fluoro leader. I did buy a new rod that is 8 ft 9 inches Med Light ( ordered from Japan )
Is this setup ok ?
That set up would be ideal for bass fishing in my opinion. I tend to use at least 20lb braid but that to suit the terrain I’m fishing over here. An 8 or 9ft rod will be ideal. Best of luck mate! 🎣
@@FISHINGWITHCAL thanks! do you ever use scent on your jigs?
Great video. I'm new to your channel and nearly half way through. You have a nice personality buddy.
Just looked at your lure, bit too expensive for me at £25 quid. I'll be scared to lose it lol. I usually get £10 quid of lug for a session on flappers. Where I live (Southend-on-Sea/Thames estuary) the fishing isn't great but we do have schoolies in the summer and sometimes larger bass.
I have tried lures here but no joy. Unfortunately it's very flat and the tide goes out very far.
Hi mate, thanks for watching the videos! Yeah the Megabass lures are pretty pricey but they’re really nice lures to have in your box, you just have to know where to fish them to prevent losing them. Do you fish the big low tides where you are then? Would be an idea to fish the tide up with some lures and target any areas where there are gullies and reefs etc. Cheers 👍🏼
@@FISHINGWITHCAL thanks for the reply. I may get one to see how they go haha. I've been sporadically buying fishing gear over winter 😂 where I live is the Thames estuary really. It's Southend-on-Sea which isn't known for good fishing. The tide goes out over half a mile and unfortunately we don't have proper gullies or reefs here. Fishing isn't great but I enjoy getting out there because it just feels good :)
I sometimes go to Kent for seafishing which is better. Planning a trip to Brighton this summer.
Hi Carl, great video can l ask what part of the world do you live thanks?
Hi mate, I’m in Guernsey in the Channel Islands 👍🏼
Where is this place please?
p.arabens companheiro muitas felicidades.stay strong.abraço.
brilliant session Cal well done
Hi cal just subbed to your channel🙋♀️ love the content a do a lot of bait fishing meself and am looking to get stuck in to the lure/spinning fishing over the summer can you put me in the right direction on what rod reel like a decent setup ect....... like size rod and reel size braid few lures to start out be a lot of help thanks keep up the good work see ya in the next 1 🦾🎣
Hi mate. It's really hard to recommend rods and reels because it all depends on what you want it for, plus your budget etc.. I'd say an 8-9ft rod will be ideal, anything with a casting weight of anything between 10-50g. Pair that with a 3000-4000 size reel and you should be good to go. As far as braid, I use Daiwa J Braid in 26lb (moss green). You could use any braid from 15lb to 30lb though. Get yourself some soft plastic lures, like savage gear eels or something, you'll lose a few if you’re just getting started so these are fairly cheap. Take a look on Veals or MrFish for some lures and see what you like. 👍🏼
Thanks very much cal appreciate the help cant wait to get stuck in 😎🎣👍🏻
happy B day, could not returned fish, great sportsman
Incredible session! 🔥 Cracking Bass fishing brother! 🎣🤘
Great video Cal and some awesome bass caught. I have the same reel as yours only issue is I seem to get a few wind knots when casting, what weight lures do you use? As I was wondering if my lures are too light.
Hi mate. I use lures from 15g to 35g with that rod and reel. It could be the line lay on your reel or maybe you’ve under-filled or overfilled it?
Cheers mate, my local tackle shop put the line on for me when I bought the rod and reel. May be the lures are too light
👌
Hi Cal , the Samson shad lure you were using what weight was it , as would like to try one but need to get the right weight cheers 👍 great fish and video
Hi mate. I use the 25g and 30g versions of the shads mostly. They’re ideal for the kind of set up I use for bass fishing so they cast far and can be worked either very shallow or a bit deeper. 👍🏼
@@FISHINGWITHCAL thank you for the info very much appreciated keep the vids coming 👍
Enjoyed 👍
👍🐟
Starting watching you a month ago and went fishing on Southend on sea pier.. Which area do you go fishing?
Thanks for checking out some of the videos mate. I'm based in Guernsey in the Channel Islands.
Ahh quite far from me. I'm in milton keynes but hopefully next summer I'll be travelling a lot more
Hi Cal how are you mate you haven't posted anything in a while are you ok mate..
Thanks for the concern mate. I've been better, but I'm ok. Just taking a bit of time out, plus the weather has been horrible. I'll have another video up later this week. Cheers 👍🏼
@FISHINGWITHCAL always here mate if you wanna chat,
That was a good session, beautiful looking fish, are they good eating?
Thanks. Yeah bass are lovely to eat 👌🏼
@@FISHINGWITHCAL thanks Cal, I've been enjoying your videos 👍
You get more takes in a session than l do in a year!
Just awesome, hope things have settled down for you? Great to see you are able to get in to some Bass fishing in December....Tight lines fella.
Thank you mate. Yeah winter over here is a great time for bass fishing. Have to make the most of it as it tends to go quiet by March time.
What a catch, nearly every cast a Bass. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too Cal.
Perfect video. Where were you mate?
This is in Guernsey in the Channel Islands mate.
Another great video Cal … nice lot of bass … hope your personal life gets sorted .. time is a healer … where did you get your pliers ?
Thanks a lot mate! The pliers are Berkeley ones, they’re just from my local tackle shop. Pretty sure veals stock them too.
Awesome video mate , watching from Ireland. I know how you feel going thru hard times ,been there myself many times.chin up mate.tight lines .new subscriber..
Thanks a lot mate and thanks for subscribing, I appreciate it! Just gotta take it day by day hey. Cheers 👍🏼
Awesome session, thanks for sharing. Ive hooked squid with that megabass zonk in white, great lure.Keep them coming Cal,happy New Year👍🤙🐟🎣
Haha that's cool 🎣 Yeah they're great lures, they send a real rattle through the rod tip!
That's some excellent winter bass fishing. What's the temperature around Guernsey at that time?
Sea temp? Sea temp is 10 degrees now.
Really nice video Cal, you bring pleasure and inspiration on a stormy, grey afternoon in Holland. Gonna catch some Bass this year! Keep up the good Spirit, You deserve It ;-)
(And Happy Birthday haha)
Thanks mate. We're getting used to these stormy grey days over here too, it's never ending! Cheers 👍🏼🎣
Good evening CAL great session mate 👍🏻, are you fishing down on the south Devon coast?
Hi mate. No, this is in Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Cheers.
Liked and shared. Happy new year Cal. 🎣🎣🎣 . Totally agree about white lures as half of my bass last year caught on white savage gear seeker.
Thanks David 👍🏼 Yeah white is one of my favourite colours to use in any lure 🎣
Excellent vid and fish Cal. Happy birthday, Merry Xmas and New year etc. I also fish for my mental health - always happier by the sea. Look forward to more content in 2023. Tight lines!
Thanks man. Yeah true, just being out can put you in a better place even if you aren’t catching fish! 👍🏼🎣
Fantastic Cal, sorry to hear personal stuff not great, time's a healer. What a start to 2023 brilliant fishing, best wishes Cornish Chris 🎣👍🍻
Thanks a lot mate! Yeah let's hope it continues 🎣🎣
Great advert for the Mega Bass lure. I’m sure this session perked you up. Wishing you well.
Thanks mate. Yeah it was a fun little session!
Good stuff is the zonk worth it?
Yes mate, I would definitely say it's worth having a zonk in your box. You can fish them in very shallow water too, although I personally wouldn’t go any less then a foot and a half.
Happy new year Cal ,fantastic video I don't often post but I watch every one keep it up Fair wind's, Tom..
Happy new year to you too mate and thanks for watching the videos! All the best 👍🏼
Just realised you're in Guernsey.
Some session there lad , you know what your doing , you put the time in sometimes you hit the jackpot , well fished , also hope that all your private stuff works out for you 🙏
Yeah it's nice when that happens haha. Thanks mate 👍🏼
What a great watch, very jealous…got a long wait before we see Bass on the south coast. Hastings UK.
Cheers! It’ll be spring before you know it. Hope you have a good season ahead 👍🏼🎣
Nice xmas presents for you well done
Hi Cal , I have only recently started lure fishing and I have to say , you sir are an absolute joy !! Your enthusiasm is so inspiring and you come across as such a nice guy! The content you put out is what keeps me and I’m sure many other newbie’s like me inspired when we are struggling with low catch rates.
Keep up the good work kind regards
Larry
Ah thanks very much Larry, I really appreciate that. We all go through spells of not catching, that's the nature of the beast 😂 The sessions you have when you’ve caught a few fish always make up for it though don’t they. Thanks a lot!
Get in cal look forward to 2023 videos an hope everything works out in your personal life buy 👍 🎣
Thanks mate, appreciate it!
Where is this? Location?
Lovely video Cal i fish the south of ireland just wondering about your vass jacket how do you rate it best regards and happy new year.
Cheers. I'd love to go fishing in Ireland some time! The vass jacket is good. Mine is the lightweight version, it's not the thicker thermal one. A good jacket to have during some light rain. I've been caught in some heavy down pours whilst wearing it and have been soaked through!
@@FISHINGWITHCAL thanks for that Cal I’ve been using my Simms jacket for last 10 years still good reproof it once cheers
@@romanomorelli2831 That's a good innings! I'll check them out cheers 👍🏼
Bannow bay is good
Nice one Cal! Interesting comments regarding Bass fishing rules on Guernsey.
Thanks. Yeah, I expect Guernsey to follow suit with the UK at some point however I could be wrong.
All the best for the new year mate.
I like that Laura I’m going to give it a go.
will it be any good in the surf
Thanks mate, you too. Yeah the Zonks are great in the surf. The lip of the lure really digs in to the water so it holds well in the surf!
Brilliant video very informative and thanks for sharing all your tips.
Thank you!
Крута.
Cool Video to Start the Weekend.
Happy new year and tight lines for You
Thanks, you too 👍🏼🎣
Great video cal 👍 and thanks for explaining about the regulations regarding the bass I’ve asked others before and never got an answer 👍 hope the rest of your year goes well 🎣🎣🎣
Cheers mate. At some point I actually expect guernsey to follow the same guidelines as the Uk & Ireland etc but for now there is nothing in place. Like many other places, sea fisheries over here are rubbish. There are many things they can do to improve fish stocks but never seem to care. Inshore netting is a big problem here, amongst many other things. Cheers for watching! 👍🏼
Fabulous video! Fishing is our therapy! Thanks for all the great videos in 2022! Tight lines for 2023!
It is indeed 🎣 Thanks for watching the videos! 👍🏼
Chin up cal, hope what your going through you keep smiling, great vid as always my man
Much appreciated mate, thanks a lot!
Great video but do you think I’d catch anything on the west coast of Scotland at this time if the year ?
Thanks mate. I'll be honest with you and say that I wouldn’t know mate. I've never fished in Scotland, I'd imagine it would be tough work bass fishing over there this time of year. Ask some of the locals and I'm sure they’ll be able to help you out.
@@FISHINGWITHCAL that’s the only issue there isn’t any locals that fish here I live in a town called Troon and it’s only ever visitors that come down to fish the only things I’ve caught were 4 small pollock at August time
@@Scottish_sniper69 Oh right ok. Are there any youtube videos filmed around your area? It's always worth a try though, fish the shallower areas with lots of structure and avoid the deeper marks. Surely some of the bait guys fish for bass over there.
@@FISHINGWITHCAL there is videos but it’s just people using feathers but I mean all I can do is go out and fish because if the lure isn’t in the water you won’t catch anything
Your so lucky to be able lure fish for bass all year round and congratulations on your catches, well earned, hope your issues resolve themselves, all the best for a peaceful and fishy 2023
Thank you mate, much appreciated. Yeah we are very lucky to have good bass fishing year round. It can be tough sometimes but you're always in with a shout 🎣
What a cracking session on the bass btw where did you get measuring mat from?
Cheers buddy. I actually got it from amazon. I'd been looking on fishing sites for ages and none of them had any in stock which I liked. I ended up getting that Berkeley one from amazon for about a 10er 👍🏼
Great video mate, some nice fish. I think regarding keeping bass is limited in the UK to 2 fish per angler per day apart from December 1st through to March 1st is catch and release only. 👍
Yeah that's right. Over here, from the shore, It's just the size limit of 42cm. There's no bag limit per angler per day. That's all year round too. Some of the older bass anglers complain there aren’t many big bass around yet a lot of them have photos of them loading up on 8lbers from years ago 😂 There are usually plenty of bass over here however, finding the bigger ones is never easy.
@@FISHINGWITHCAL Where is it that you are doing your bass fishing??
Brill m8 keep it going.
What was the water temp?
10 degrees
Loved it as always Cal!!
Be out there in that weather so fair play to you and hope you had a good birthday.
Really hope that your personal stuff works out mate!!

well said you, totally agree,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Awesome video, jealous of your year round bass!! Keep up the good work! 🎣🐟
Thanks mate. We have our tough times too though. It's usually hard work this time of year 🎣
Great to see you out doing what you do m8, everyone has hard times but keep doing what makes you happy m8 and you will get through it.
