- - Kolyada (Коляда), One of the most important annual holidays of the Slavs is the winter sun holiday Kolyada. Or - in a different way - solstice. Having originated in pre-Christian times, it is one of the few that has survived to this day, although it was eventually written in a different context and turned out to be timed to coincide with a new holiday - this is how carols appeared (that is, a kind of folk Christmas festivities). But even through the centuries and through the prism of other semantic layers, its ancient original essence still clearly emerges - the greeting of the new growing Sun and the key turning point of the year.

I found those times when, during the time of Kolyada, it was customary in the evenings to go around every house in the village and praise the owners, sing them songs with wishes. Our ancestors believed that during the time of Kolyada, the boundary between the worlds becomes thinner than usual. It was believed that the deceased ancestors came to the houses in the form of carolers. Their goal is to bring happiness to the families of their descendants. Therefore, people gathered, sewed themselves various costumes of various entities from Slavic mythology and walked in these costumes from one house to another. On this day, the housewives baked unleavened pies and sweets and distributed them all to carolers. There were also funny cases when the days of the kolyada ended, and the carolers continued their adventures, they were put on a sled and rolled into the river to the ice hole))
The kids went from house to house in the late evening)))

I will not get political as my opinion is less than the worth of my spit. Good on you all for celebrating the people around you, whoever they are. Also, good on you for memorializing the lives lost in the "Special" thing. No parent deserves to lose a child. East, west, US, Ukraine, Russian, Congolese, etc. It is necessary, but nothing to celebrate.

Lars, I am very curious as to, how you care for your animals, in such cold conditions? Here in the States we are in the deep freeze, but you deal with it every day it seems. How do you get water to your chickens and keep them warm enough, ours are really suffering, it is a struggle for sure. I think it would be a great video for you to touch on, just a thought! Love all your stuff! What a wonderful world it could be, we are all brothers, if we could just be left alone by our leaders!

Good video Lars, it is good your children learn the local cultural events, even in the winter weather. For us in Ontario winter hasn't really happened, light snow that melts in a few days, the resort operators on the ski hills are not happy, and of course happy new year.

Wow, I didn't expect to see my teacher from Moscow region in your area! He's a real expert in traditional culture, but he lacks marketing skills, unfortunately. Today it is colder here in Missouri than it is in Moscow Russia or Fairbanks Alaska. I was a little surprised, since Fairbanks is usually colder. Moscow gets colder, and winter is a lot longer, but in the dead of winter here is fairly comparable apart from the fact that we don't get much snow. 1⁰ F is supposed to be our high today. -17⁰ C

I can begin to relate to your winter videos! We will have lows down around 20F (-7C) all week next week, with highs only around freezing, here in Birmingham Alabama USA. This is the longest hard freeze we've had in DECADES! Thankfully, there doesn't seem to be a risk of ice.

@@SurvivalRussia Very much so! Over the last few decades, we have rarely had temps down to -3C, and that only for a day or two. Even without icy conditions, I expect some people will be struggling. Thankfully, I have a lot of cold weather gear.
